Super eclectic guest mix from DJ Maiya out of our hometown Richmond, VA, kicking off the 2024 mix series proper! Hope yall enjoy- Growing up in a Gujarati household with a very musical family, I was exposed to music from around the world constantly. So much of the joy I experience in DJing comes from finding rhythms that represent larger diasporic communities and that translate the universal language of groove right on the dancefloor. In putting this mix together, I was inspired by the duality of wintertime to create a mix that allows you to chill yet travel the world, rest yet dance at the same time. While this mix centers on downtempo house and techno, you'll also hear R&B, reggae, drum and bass, classical Indian, and Afro-Latin flavors sprinkled throughout it. - DJ MAIYA Tracklist: Heyahin - Yusuf Lemone, Shooresh Fezoni, Marco Tegui (2018, Germany) Bangalore Whipsers - Andi Otto, MD Pallavi (2016, Germany, India) Dameek Majeb - Ahmed Ben Ali (2008, Libya) Youm Wara Youm - Samira Saeed feat. BLACK & WHITE 1968. Bowie, Cohen, Phil Collins, Sheena Easton, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, George Michael, Joni Mitchell, Chris Rea, Linda Ronstadt, Sting, Barbara Streisand, Tears For Fears.

Graduated from Berklee College of Music were he studied under Prof. Ed Kaspik and Prof. Rob Kaufman. Born 1975 in Borås, a small town on the west coast of Sweden, Michael started taking lessons at the public school of music at the age of 8 were he studied for Julian Kursawa and Per Nordebring. Growing up in Borås were the music scene was somewhat small but still flourishing he joined several different bands as well as the academic ensembles that was offered at the public school. At the age of 16 he would record his first solo album "Mystery Island" at the Swedish Radio with producer and engineer Per Mossling. Michael and Per would join forces again and this time for the solo album "Black Spot". Both albums were experimental and bold and put forth by the Swedish Radio. At this time Michael was endorsed by Yamaha Scandinavia and Zildjian Cymbals. 1995 and at the age of 18 Michael joined the "Central Band of the Royal Swedish Army" were he studied drums and percussion with Capt. Extensive touring with this band throughout Europe with artists such as Leo Sayer, Patricia Kaas, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Cheb Mami, Fools Garden.

I had the honor of DJ'ing and coordinating music online for Out Magazine's 20th anniversary celebration, which took place on October 9th, 2012 at the W Hotel in Hollywood and the experience was an absolute blast.  For anyone who wasn't able to attend, I am posting my live set right here on podomatic. This first half, which took place before the night's speeches, covers the music that defined our LGBT lives from Out's inaugural year, 1992, all the way through 2001. This was a great era for music and I had a blast listening back at the music from these years. This playlist isn't completely chronological, but I think it does a great job of generally capturing the sound of that 10-year period. For more, check out my musical picks from each year on Out Magazine's special 20th anniversary section, HERE: http://www.out.com/out-exclusives/out-20 The playlist, below:  "Moving On Up" (Rui Tome 2012 Private Mix), M People"Ain't No Need To Hide" (Deep Dish Mix), Sandy B"Where Love Lives" (12" Classic Mix), Alison Limerick"The Lover That You Are" (Classic Club Mix), Pulse feat. Epic, momentous, ostentatious are just some of the words used to best describe a majority of the productions coming out in 2000. And why not? After all, it was the new millennium, the beginning of another 100 years. With all the predictions that it was going to be the end of days and that January 1st would be the day that time stood still, what better reason could you have for making it the grandest party of all time? As DJs began to really make a name for themselves, each one tried to topple the other with the biggest, fattest and longest mix as possible. After his "momentous" remix of Jennifer Lopez's "Waiting For Tonight" the year before, Hex Hector was leading the charge with Thunderpuss 2000 not far behind. That's not to say there weren't any other massive tunes of the year, because there were. DJ Tiesto quite possibly churned out a career-defining remix for Delerium's "Silence" featuring Sarah McLachlan; that is until a few years later when he posted another massive tune on his mantle by The Roc Project's "Never (Past Tense)" featuring Tina Arena, but that's for another post. Even Victor Calderone turned Sting into a dancefloor sensation with his unlikely rework of "Desert Rose" featuring Cheb Mami. Nevertheless, it was all about Hex Hector! From 1999 forward, you could pretty much count on Hex to whip up the seasonal classic that would have everybody shaking their ass and pestering the DJ to play that song, over and over. This year's winner was from the former Spice Girl, Melanie C. whose "I Turn To You" was an instant classic. Hypnotic, catchy as friggin' hell with a deep trance-like thumping beat you just couldn't escape from. No doubt, the guy was at the top of his game. You couldn't even walk into a club without hearing one of his big productions blasting from the speakers. Whoever said everything should be in moderation was dead wrong! In this case, EXCESS is definitely BEST! Enjoy! Album : Year-End Edition 2000 | volume 3 Genre : Circuit, Mainstream, House, Classics Year : 2008 Total Time : 1:38:41:00 1.
