Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! In case you hadn't noticed, we love a good cover version! This episode, we're looking at covers - staples, covers from strange sources, and some songs that have had a LOT of covers, including a bunch of covers of Bowie's “Heroes”. Our Album You Must Hear before You Die is “Is This It?” by The Strokes. This punk/Britpop-influenced album got rave reviews on release in 2001 from Rolling Stone, The Village Voice, and New Musical Express. We're not convinced. In Knockin' on Heaven's Door, we mourn the loss of Wayne Osmond (of the Osmond Brothers), Chad Morgan, the Aussie country great, and Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul and Mary. We hope they get to sing a rousing chorus of “Puff the Magic Dragon together. As usual, there's heaps of fun. Enjoy!! Natalie Oliver-Atherton, Ms. Senior America 2024/2025, Mrs. Centennial 2023 & Mrs. Colorado American 2023, boasts an illustrious career spanning over two decades as the Music Director & Conductor of the internationally acclaimed vocal ensemble, S.T.A.R.S. (Singers Taking Action Reaching Souls). Her journey has taken her across the globe, captivating audiences with her extraordinary talents. Natalie's passion for music was evident from a young age. Remarkably, she could sing before she could articulate coherent sentences.By the tender age of thirteen, she had already assumed the role of choral director and conductor, a role she initially embraced at her childhood church. Her professional journey commenced at age 17 when she graced the stage as a soloist at the iconic Carnegie Hall. It reached a pinnacle years later as she performed in the enchanting setting of the French Riviera for the late Prince Rainier of Monaco. As a singer and actress, Natalie has left an indelible mark in the world of entertainment. Her impressive credits include the role of the Gypsy Acid Queen in two international tours of “The Who's Tommy” (Germany/Canada), Constance in David Merrick's “Oh, Kay!,” Andrea Devereaux in “Once on This Island,” and the thought-provoking “A Brief History of White Music.”Her talents have also graced the silver screen, with notable appearances in feature films such as “Mississippi Masala” (opposite Oscar winner Denzel Washington) and “Amazing Grace & Chuck” (alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and Gregory Peck). On the regional stage, Natalie's versatility shines through. She has portrayed Mary Magdalene in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” Ronnette in “Little Shop of Horrors,” Annie in “Porgy & Bess,” and Mayme in “Intimate Apparel,” earning her a well-deserved Denver Post Ovation Award nomination for best supporting actress in a musical. Most recently, she enthralled audiences as Tryshia in “The Last Session” at Town Hall Arts Center and starred in the new musical “Trav'lin” alongside Broadway veteran Milton Craig Nealy at Arvada Center before the COVID pandemic. Natalie's vocal prowess extends to prestigious orchestral performances, including appearances as the soprano soloist with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, where she delivered captivating renditions of Duke Ellington's “Sacred Concert” and “Too Hot to Handel.” She has also graced the stages of the Florida Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, and Sinfonia Gulfcoast with her mesmerizing vocals. Her journey also led her to headline at the former Stardust Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas in their original production, “Enter the Night,” and opened for the esteemed poet laureate, Dr. Maya Angelou. Natalie's dynamic range and versatility were on full display as she embodied the role of Mother Wisdom in a new opera about the life of Mary Magdalene titled “Woman of Light,” earning her a second Denver Post Ovation Award nomination as best supporting actress in a musical. As Mrs Colorado American 2023 she has lent her services to collect toys for our military children at Ft. Carson, raised $18,000 to benefit Lifespark, Alzheimer's Foundation, Colorectal Cancer, Global Down Syndrome, the Sock It To Em Sock Campaign, as an ambassador for the homeless and underserved communities and is currently a nominee to fund raise for the Leukemia, Lymphoma Society, competing to be their largest fundraiser who will be named Visionary of the Year 2024. Beyond her remarkable career and community activism, Natalie finds fulfillment in her family life. She resides just outside Denver, Colorado, with her husband of 28 years, Jeffrey, and takes immense pride in being the mother of three beautiful children: Justin (32) Rachael (27) and Serea (23). Together with her husband, she serves as an instructor and coach at their private vocal and acting studio, the Namasté Works Vocal & Acting Studio. Furthermore, she holds the esteemed position of Executive Director at The Namaste Works Foundation, operating under the moniker The Namasté Works Arts Alliance. This nonprofit is dedicated to identifying and nurturing the talents of young adult performing artists, guiding them toward the next stage of their development, and inspiring them to become Ambassadors for Humanity who generously share their gifts, talents, and abilities with the world.

BLACK & WHITE 1968. Bowie, Cohen, Phil Collins, Sheena Easton, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, George Michael, Joni Mitchell, Chris Rea, Linda Ronstadt, Sting, Barbara Streisand, Tears For Fears.

Picture © Lou Dommett Young One of the many highlights of the 2022 XTC Convention in Swindon was an in-depth interview with producer John Leckie. Talking to co-organiser Darryl Bullock, he recalled his formative studio experience working with former members of the Beatles and the excitement of going into the studio with XTC for their first two albums. After that came the sonic experiments of Go+ and Take Away/The Lure of Salvage and, of course, 25 O'Clock and Psonic Psunspot for the Dukes of Stratosphear. Many thanks to Darryl for conducting the interview and sound engineer Paul Bullimore who made the audio possible – not just for this but the whole weekend. What Do You Call That Noise? This week we're discussing every album by XTC. Led by Andy Partridge, few bands have the creative journey that XTC did. They started out as blistering post-punk, grew into an accessible 80s pop act, went on to pioneer modern alternative, only to end up tossing in a bunch of orchestras, wasting all their money in the process. By the end of their journey, the band was whittled down to two members who hated each other. This is a good one, so strap in.Closing track: “I Am the Audience” from Go 2 (1978)Spotify playlist on XTChttps://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @motherpuncherMike's Picks:White Music (1978) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteWasp Star: Apple Venus Volume 2 (2000) — Worst Album, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Drums and Wires (1979) — Best AlbumWhite Music (1978) — Personal FavoriteThe Big Express (1984) — Worst AlbumWasp Star: Apple Venus Volume 2 (2000) — Least FavoriteAlbums we discussed this episode…White Music (1978)Go 2 (1978)Drums and Wires (1979)Black Sea (1980)English Settlement (1982)Mummer (1983)The Big Express (1984)Skylarking (1986)Oranges & Lemons (1989)Nonsuch (1992)Apple Venus Volume 1 (1999)Wasp Star: Apple Venus Volume 2 (2000)

How do you create big wins? Of course, you track all of the little wins and build a solid foundation. That's why we're excited to talk today to NASCAR star Corey LaJoie about themes from his new Stacking Pennies podcast. While he drives a car alone, he's a small part of a team of people who all have to do the little things right to achieve big success on the track. Plus, "Stacking Pennies"? You know why we had to talk to Corey. We don't want to alarm you, but in case you've been living in a bubble, inflation has been horrible on many items, like lumber, new and used cars, computer chips, and even chicken. While the small story is that this may not be the best time to buy a car or refinish your home, the bigger story is that inflation is the silent killer of "safe money" sitting in bank accounts. We'll talk through why you want to think differently about risk today. I wanted to talk about how loving music from artists who aren’t your race has been a point of contention for people. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/sivetoblake/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sivetoblake/support
Malcolm White became interested in the local music scene as a student at Booneville High School. In this episode, he remembers his early career booking bands and managing music venues in Hattiesburg and Jackson. In 1985, White opened Jackson’s largest music venue, Hal and Mal’s. He recalls the wide variety of bands that played there and how casinos affected their business. After Hurricane Katrina, White became involved in rebuilding the state’s cultural centers. He discusses becoming Executive Director of the Mississippi Arts Commission and the formation of the Culture Club. During his time with the MAC, White has worked to develop the state’s cultural economy. He explains how the Mississippi Blues Trail promotes cultural tourism. After nearly 15 years of public service to the state of Mississippi, Malcolm White will retire as executive director of the Mississippi Arts Commission on September 30, 2020.
White music teacher friends. This episode is all about my experience working in a school with a high demographic of black students. I talk about what I learned in the process and my hope is that you'll hear my words and will learn from them. If I can be honest, I've been stewing on whether or not to record this podcast episode for days now. I even told one of my best friends I have so much to say, but I don't want this to be about me or to offend anyone with my words at all. That is never and will never be my intention. But, with so much stewing in my heart, I knew I had to get my words down in the hopes of helping other white educators. After praying about it, I knew it was time. I pray those of you hearing this episode can see and hear my heart through my words. Because, that is the only way I'm coming at you is with a completely loving and open heart to learn and also share with you today. You can read the blog post that goes with this episode here. Register for the upcoming FREE 5 day "Start the School Year Off Right" challenge here I'd love for you to leave a rating and a review of the podcast on I-tunes, be sure to share the podcast with any music teacher friends who would find it helpful and be sure to tag me on Instagram or Facebook.
Craig spotlights another criminally overlooked band in the vaults of Rock N Roll for today’s #TuesdayTriplePlay. XTC was like no other band around because no other band was capable of producing such a majestic sound, which is a result of the songwriting of Andy Partridge & Colin Moulding. Songs featured: “This is Pop” (Live in Concert, Hammersmith Palais, 22 December 1980) - from Transistor Blast: The Best of The BBC Sessions (1998)Originally released on White Music (1978)“Burning With Optimisms Flames” from Black Sea (1980)"I Remember The Sun" from The Big Express (1984)
Esta semana en "Islas de Robinson" nos movemos entre 1975 y 1980, en clave de "post -punk" y "new wave", con clásicos como XTC, Television o los Saints. Suenan: ROXY MUSIC - "COULD IT HAPPEN TO ME" ("SIREN", 1975) / TALKING HEADS - "WITH OUR LOVE" ("MORE SONGS ABOUT BUILDINGS AND FOOD", 1978) / THE MODERN LOVERS - "OLD WORLD" ("THE MODERN LOVERS", 1976) / THE SOFT BOYS - "(I WANT TO BE AN) ANGLEPOISE LAMP" (SINGLE, 1978 INCLUIDO EN "1976-81") / TELEVISION - "THE FIRE" ("ADVENTURE", 1978) / THE SAINTS - "CHURCH OF INDIFFERENCE" ("PREHISTORIC SOUNDS", 1978) / THE SPORTS - "STEP BY STEP" ("DON'T THROW STONES", 1979) / SPLIT ENZ - "SO THIS IS LOVE" ("THE ROOTIN TOOTIN LUTON TAPES", 1978/2007) / XTC - "SPINNING TOP" ("WHITE MUSIC", 1978) / SQUEEZE - "I THINK I'M GO GO" ("ARGYBARGY", 1980) / JULES AND THE POLAR BEARS - "SHADOWS BREAK" ("GOT NO BREEDING", 1978) / Escuchar audio
When the late 70s arrived, many musicians wanted to sweep away the “dinosaurs” of rock (imagine that in 2018). Punk was about to sweeping away the complexities (among other things) and getting back to raw honest energy. Many musos liked the rawness and energy of punk but felt they had stronger musical chops that they wanted to apply to that realm, as well as explore other stylistic avenues. 1977 saw the release of the debut album of one such band from Swindon, XTC. Welcome to episode 119 of Love That Album – the second episode for November 2018. Like The Beatles before them, the back catalogue of XTC shows a development where the band that released their final album scarcely sound like the band that released their first. By 1982, they were only five years into their recording career, but the album of that year, English Settlement bore little resemblance to White Music released only a few years prior. For this episode of the podcast, I welcome guitarist and first-time guest, Geoff Pearlman, as well as the return of Sydney guitarist Shane Pacey to focus on English Settlement as well as the development of the band that reached that point. The discussion is wide and varied covering the musicianship of the band and the different songwriting approaches of Andy Partridge and Colin Moulding. We also discuss how the songs on the album covered social issues like domestic violence, gun ownership, and the fragility of modern existence. We had a wonderful time and I thank Shane and Geoff for working their senses overtime for the show. I even found an excuse to do my Tom Waits impersonation. You can download the podcast from Spotify, iTunes (search for “Love That Album podcast”) or from the website at http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com. You can follow Shane at http://shanepaceytrio.com.au/ and https://bondicigars.com/ Geoff’s musical activities can be found at https://www.geoffpearlmanmusic.com/ Both can be found on the usual social media platforms (Facebook, twitter etc) Both of these gents make terrific music in their own right, so check them out and give them your support. Send the show feedback at rrrkitchen@yahoo.com.au (written or mp3 voicemail) or join the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/groups/lovethatalbum. If you’d consider writing an iTunes review or recommending the show to a friend, I’d be immensely grateful.

The Kominas get a lot of press for being Muslim and Hindu in a genre dominated by white artists. But they kinda just want to rock.
Music Month continues with singer-songwriter Sinéad White. She's performed at Knockanstockan, Longitude and Electric Picnic and has been described as 'a rising talent on the Irish music scene' by music blogger Nialler9. You can catch Sinéad live at Electric Picnic, where she'll perform at midnight on Saturday on the Oxfam stage in association with Abner Brown's Barbershop. Her debut album 'Finally' was released in May.
