Best Pick with John Dorney, Jessica Regan and Tom Salinsky Episode 317. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Released 30 April 2025 Today we watched two contrasting episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. We kicked off with an episode from the fifth season, the celebratory romp Trials and Tribble-ations in which the 24th century crew revisits the action of the classic original series episode The Trouble with Tribbles. Pretty much all the senior writing staff had a go at this one. The story is credited to Ira Steven Behr, Hans Beimler and Robert Hewitt Wolfe and the teleplay to Ronald D Moore and René Echevarria. It was directed by Jonathan West, and it was first shown on 4 November 1996. We followed this up with In the Pale Moonlight from towards the end of the sixth season, airing on 15 April 1998. The story is by Peter Allan Fields and the screenplay is credited to Michael Taylor, although Ronald D Moore heavily rewrote it. It was directed by Victor Lobl and it earned the full five stars from me (in fact, both episodes did). The US's transformational upgrade of its drainage, power and road networks is a long-term investment opportunity hiding in plain sight. In this podcast, Michael Taylor reveals some of the outstanding companies involved and makes the case that the markets have yet to fully appreciate the advantages working in their favour. Background: Michael Taylor is an investment manager in Baillie Gifford's US Alpha strategy. In this Disruption Week briefing, he explains why years of neglect coupled with the destructive consequences of wild weather and our insatiable appetite for data-processing power have led the US to embark on a massive renewal of its physical infrastructure.  Taylor suggests that many of the companies creating long-term value benefit from supply advantages, which help them defend their commoditised products' prices. These range from ownership of gravel quarries, which are difficult to get planning permission for, to the use of a gigantic, portable plastic drain-making machine. In addition, Taylor discusses what a second Trump presidency might mean for the sector and why finding standout companies involves travelling off the beaten track. Resources: Disruption WeekBuilding back: the great US infrastructure opportunitySpotting the winners from the great US infrastructure renaissance Companies mentioned include: Advanced Drainage SystemsEatonComfort Systems USAMartin MariettaNVIDIAStella-Jones Timecodes:00:00 Introduction1:35    Exceptional businesses confronting an exceptional problem3:20   The US v global infrastructure opportunity4:35   Donald Trump's second presidency6:40   The benefits of patience7:35   Wild weather8:45   Investing in Advanced Drainage Systems11:05  Labour shortages12:15  Stella-Jones's wooden telegraph poles14:05  Tree-spotter specialists16:15  Martin Marietta's supply-side advantage18:55  Recycled aggregates' limitations20:15  Finding US infrastructure investments21:45  Comfort Systems USA and keeping datacentres cool24:20  “Massive in terms of magnitude of spend and duration”

Returning to the podcast filmmaker Julia Loktev ("The Loneliest Planet", "Day Night Day Night") and the editor Michael Taylor. The two have a new documentary project called "My Undesirable Friends: Part 1 — Last Air in Moscow" which is broken into 5 episodes and is screening as part of the New York Film Festival's main slate. This from the New York Film Festival website: American filmmaker Loktev, born in the Soviet Union, returned to Moscow in 2021 to make a documentary on the persistence of independent journalism in Putin's Russia—just months, as it turned out, before the country's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. With her friend Anna Nemzer, a talk show journalist for TV Rain, Russia's last remaining independent news channel, Loktev ends up immersing herself with a group of young women fighting to ensure the vocalization of dissent and outspoken criticism of the country—even as they are branded by the government as “foreign agents,” their careers and lives increasingly at risk as the country creeps toward war. Structured in five chapters, Loktev's film, the climactic days of which were filmed in Moscow during the first week of the invasion, when most independent journalists fled the country, is an extraordinary vérité document of a moment of immense change and anxiety, as well as a vital depiction of the eternal hope that so many in Russia hold for living in a democratic state. Screening in two parts: Chapters 1–3 (198m), Chapters 4–5 (124m).

Science was corrupted, people were manipulated on a global scale, and misleading numbers, along with statistical trickery, were used to misinform and control public perception. I've been deeply moved by the messages from my dedicated supporters, who represent diverse backgrounds from all over the world. I've received remarkable emails, spoken with brilliant individuals, and connected with many inspiring souls, learning so much in the process. Now, I want to give these people a voice. Everyone has a story worth sharing, and through the Supporter Stories podcast series, I aim to highlight their experiences. The first of the two guests is Dr Michael Taylor, who describes himself as a sceptical scientist with expertise in polymers. In this conversation with Michael, topics range from politics and Brexit to personal awakenings, education flaws, and the impact of COVID-19 and taxation on the self-employed. They discuss the disappointment with Brexit, the divisive nature of politics, the need for critical thinking, and the importance of transparency and honesty. The conversation also touches on community groups, financial struggles, health, and concludes with advice on listening, avoiding judgment, and living truthfully for a fulfilling life. My second guest is Deborah Holden, a small business owner. She owns a cafe and shop and rents two-holiday homes in the beautiful South Downs. In this chat, I share with Deborah my experience of starting a podcast and the challenges of learning new skills. I talk about how gratitude and forgiveness have played a big role in my life. Deborah jumps in with her perspective on feminism and young men's struggles today. Together, we discuss the power of humour and how important it is to balance the darker moments with light and positivity. We also discuss the importance of self-belief and discovering one's unique talent. The conversation wraps up with Deborah's words of wisdom: "Stay in the light. Be the light. Bring the light to others." I hope you enjoy the episode. It's time for our summer tradition at Here's the Thing, where staff members choose their favorite conversations from the archives in our Summer Staff Picks series. This week, we revisit Alec Baldwin's 2023 interview with documentary filmmaker James Jones, who tells the unbelievable story of CEO-turned-fugitive Carlos Ghosn in “Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn.” In 2018, the former auto executive of Nissan and Renault was arrested in Japan on charges of financial misconduct. He escaped prosecution by being smuggled out of the country…in a box. Jones, director of the BAFTA-winning “Chernobyl: The Last Tapes,” explores questions surrounding CEO excess and a potential corporate takedown in this 2023 Apple TV+ series. Alec Baldwin speaks with Jones about getting Ghosn to be interviewed for the series, the people who suffered collateral damage and if Ghosn, now residing in Lebanon, will ever be held accountable.  And in an additional recent interview, Alec speaks with Michael Taylor, the Green Beret who coordinated Ghosn's escape, about how he became involved in the plot, what it was like for him serving time in a Japanese prison for his role in the affair and if he and Ghosn ever crossed paths following his release. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, Greg Jenner is joined in nineteenth-century England by Dr Michael Taylor and comedian Sara Pascoe to learn all about pioneering palaeontologist Mary Anning. Born to a cabinet-maker father who collected and sold fossils to make extra money, Anning went fossil hunting from a young age. Over the course of her life, she discovered complete ichthyosaur, plesiosaur and pterosaur skeletons, and made great contributions to the emerging discipline of palaeontology. But she was also shut out by the largely male scientific establishment. This episode charts her extraordinary life story, exploring the significance of her discoveries against the background of nineteenth-century debates about religion and science and controversies around the age of the earth.
