Bernard's story is incredible, after working in impact investment for various financial institutions here in Europe, he bought a coffee farm in Honduras and moved there 2 years later, and is now selling his coffee through CrowdFarming!Bernard's project is so much more than just coffee, to start, his coffee is called “Melipona bee coffee”, Melipona is the name of a family of stingless bees native to the tropics. As an organic coffee farmer, Bernard has always had in mind to plant plants to attract pollinators, among them the melipona bee. It is a kind of bee that hardly anyone knows about (although it is mentioned in the podcast bee happy) which is why Bernard is a big promoter! He is a “meliponiculturist” which means he also produces honey from these bees! On top of this, his farm also runs social projects, trainings with his staff and more. If you want to know more about the farming and production process of coffee and also discover Bernard's wonderful and inspiring story, you will love this episode. Listen now on all streaming platforms.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/crowd_farming/ Blog: https://www.crowdfarming.com/blog/en/

Fred is the general manager of the Kauai Coffee Company in Hawaii.  It is the largest coffee producing farm in the United States and is also known as the 'Disneyland of Coffee'.  Fred explains why he told his team they were going to 'stop growing coffee and start growing soil'. They also discuss why volcanic soil is so good for coffee growing and the role that both microbiology and water play in soil health.   KEY TAKEAWAYS Coffee plants need about 17 different nutrients for optimal growth. Coffee plant grow optimally at a pH of between 4.9 and 5.6. Healthy microbiology is essential - without it the plants cannot utilize the nutrients in the soil. Water is simply a carrier for the nutrients. Root vegetables play a vital role in revitalizing soil for coffee. Find out why in the episode. So much of the health of a tree depends on what happens underground. The waste products from producing the beans (like pulp and chaff), when combined, make a compost that coffee trees love.   BEST MOMENTS ‘The principles we talk about today apply to anything you grow. ´ ‘Optimal soil leads to an optimal cherry, bean and, ultimately, coffee!' ‘There are more microorganisms in a tablespoon of soil than there are humans on earth!'   EPISODE RESOURCES Kauai Coffee on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/kauaicoffeeco/ Visit the Kauai Coffee estate: https://kauaicoffee.com/visit-the-kauai-coffee-estate/ Jayber Crow By Wendell Berry - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Jayber-Crow-Novel-Port-William-ebook/dp/B003SNIZV2/ The World-Ending Fire: The Essential Wendell Berry - https://www.amazon.co.uk/World-Ending-Fire-Essential-Wendell-Berry/dp/0141984139/ VALUABLE RESOURCES Award-winning single-origin specialty coffee:https://umblecoffee.com/ You're disciplined and high achieving. In this episode, Kenneth sits down with Stefan Tribble and Steph Parsons to continue their discussion about how the way the beans are grown affects the taste. Today, they are talking about the impact elevation has on the coffee we drink. They delve into how elevation impacts the rate of growth, the density of the bean, and the taste profile. Importantly, you will also learn about some simple tricks you can use to quickly pick out the best-tasting coffees - tips you can use whether you are buying beans or a cup of coffee.   KEY TAKEAWAYS  Just like humans, coffee beans are impacted by the fact the air is thinner at high altitudes. The higher it grows, the denser the bean is, which has a positive impact on the taste. The variety that is grown and which country it grows in also plays into the elevation/taste equation. There are exceptions to the rule. Some coffees that are grown at low elevations still have superior taste profiles. Examples are shared in the episode. Coffee farms near the coast and on islands also have the potential to produce high-quality beans. Coffees grown in mountainous areas near the equator typically have the highest potential for giving you that perfect cup. The coffee cherry matures slower at higher elveations, which contributes positively to the flavor.   BEST MOMENTS ‘The coffee farm has about a 50% impact on your cup.´ ‘With higher density, you´re gonna get a higher cup quality.' ‘With coffee, if you can grow it slower….., then you will have a higher quality.'   VALUABLE RESOURCES Award-winning single-origin specialty coffee:https://umblecoffee.com/ You're disciplined and high achieving. In this episode, Kenneth sits down with Rob Hoos of Iteration Coffee and Hoos Coffee Consulting. He is a coffee roasting consultant who has visited numerous coffee farms during his career. Today, he provides insight into what modern coffee farming is like. Rob speaks about the different coffee farming business models he has seen. Everything from harvesting coffee from wild bushes to running huge heavily mechanized farms. They also discuss some of the challenges the farmers face. Including dealing with diseases, and pests and gaining and maintaining organic certification. As well as talking about the challenge of making sure that those who work in the industry are not exploited by having to work long hours for little pay. KEY TAKEAWAYS Many coffee farmers still run small farms. Some even pick it from wild trees. In places, farmers take small batches of coffee to a central processing point or a co-operative facility. There are also large-scale, highly mechanized farms in every country. In many areas, people are still working for little pay. Specialty coffee is helping to change that. Fighting disease and pests is expensive and can negatively impact the quality of the product. Naturally dried coffee has a nicer flavor profile.   BEST MOMENTS ‘For example, harvesting coffee in Ethiopia where they don´t even necessarily own the trees. ´ ‘Specialty coffee …. saves coffee farmers by giving them better pricing.' ‘Coffee is actually more nuanced than wine.'   EPISODE RESOURCES Iteration Coffee: http://iteration.coffee/ Hoos Coffee: http://hoos.coffee/ Contact Rob of Hoos Coffee: rob@hoos.coffee Angel´s Cup Coffee: https://angelscup.com/   VALUABLE RESOURCES Award-winning single-origin specialty coffee:https://umblecoffee.com/   You're disciplined and high achieving. Hello friends,Today I want to share an interview with Sofia Handtke from Mapache Coffee in El Salvador. I recorded this last November at the end of my time with them. That was my second season working with them and designing fermentation lots at their mill. Over the last 2 harvest seasons we've done about 40 different batches combining 4 strains of yeast, 3 cultivars and various lengths (# of hours in the tank) in an effort to create additional flavor options.I wanted to interview Sofia and Jan Carlo together but they have a small mill team and a lot of responsibilities so I caught them when I could. In the interview with Jan Carlo we spoke about how Mapache is embracing vertical integration, how he believes this current generation is more open to sharing information, and some of his struggles like disease pressures and how climate change has impacted his farming philosophy. You can catch my conversation with him HERE.In this conversation I ask Sofia to share her Q Grader experience and talk about her background in coffee. She believes that getting coffee producers and buyers using the same standard language is very important but unfortunately it’s still out of reach for many producers in Central and South America—this is a topic that deserves it’s own episode and it's in the works. She shares what it was like growing up in a coffee farm and how she and Jan Carlo are engaging their two teenage children to inspire them to see the coffee industry as a career option, unlike her parent’s generation, many of which had to abandon the industry because it was no longer a viable way to make a living. She shares some fantastic insights about coffee branding and marketing and the coffee gear she takes when she travels.

I have a positive coffee story for you today. A drop of genius and hope in the dark ocean of bitterness. This is where transition always starts isn’t it? When I found out that with each cup of commercial - or fairtrade - coffee that we drink we perpetuate extreme poverty and child labour, I was ready to fall into denial . I was thinking about all of the cups of coffee I had in my life...

The Origin Trip. A pinnacle moment for any barista and a regular part of business for roasters and importers. As "The Origin Trip" has become a more fashionable, marketable, and regular occurrence in specialty coffee there are questions and tensions come up. What is the true value of an trip to origin? How does it benefit the farmer? Is it worth the expense involved? Are we really advancing coffee? How can we approach the trip and make it mutually beneficial? To answer these questions and give us some solid insight on how to think about travel to origin we are joined by Kim-Elena Ionescu, Chief Sustainability Officer at the SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) I hope this episode gives you a better understanding of our part to play in the producer/retailer relationship and that if you find yourself going to origin you would be better equipped to make all around rewarding one.  Enjoy! Anyone would be surprised to learn that coffee is grown in Korea of all places, since coffee plants are known to grow in tropical regions like South America or Africa. Nonetheless, Goheung-gun County in southern Korea is home to roughly 20 coffee farms. This week's trip includes a visit to a coffee farm in Goheung and a sampling of locally produced coffee at the farm's coffee shop, as well as a barista-for-a-day program where visitors learn how to roast and hand-drip coffee.

Over the years, we’ve seen quite a few different styles of speaker presentations: those that share a particular experience or paradigm; those that ask provoking questions (some with potential solutions, some without); the presentation of finished research; those that offer a glimpse of new work, still in progress. Whilst each is valuable in their own right, there is something undeniably special about seeing new ideas put into practice without any certainty as to the outcome: these presentations offer us the opportunity to not only become a part of the speakers’ journey, but also—once the work has been completed—as a later snapshot of the learning that has taken place. This week’s release, “Soil Biology” by Tim Wendelboe, falls into this latter category of presentations: Tim shares with us his journey to understand and apply Dr. Elaine Ingham’s concepts of soil biology, biological farming, and thermal composting to his farm project, Finca El Suelo in Colombia. Regardless of how these concepts positively or negatively impact Finca El Suelo’s production in the coming years, it is inspiring to see a barista accepting responsibility in creating a plausible future for quality coffee: “I have a lot of crazy ideas that might or might not improve the coffee quality, but I am not willing to ask the farmers I buy from to risk their income and coffee in order to test and experiment for me” (Tim Wendelboe to Leif Haven, Eater.com).   -- During his eight years with Stockfleth’s in Oslo, Norway, Tim Wendelboe went from shop barista to manager, growing sales as well as the staff’s coffee knowledge at one of Stockfleth’s three shops, to their head of quality and training, running 6 stores together with his friend and colleague Alexander Scheen Jensen. It was during his time at Stockfleth’s that Tim, in 2004, after placing second in the World Barista Championship in both 2001 and 2002, was crowned World Barista Champion. He is also the 2005 World Cup Tasters Champion. In July 2007, Tim started his own espresso bar, training centre, and micro-roastery at Grünerløkka, in Oslo, called Tim Wendelboe, where he imports, roasts, and sells high quality coffee. The company aims to be among the best roasteries in the world. Although this is not measurable, Tim Wendelboe won the Nordic roaster competition in 2008, 2009 and in 2010. The company currently sells coffee to around 50 cafes and restaurants in Norway and also around the world. In 2009, Tim wrote and published a book in Norwegian based on his direct trade experience; “Coffee with Tim Wendelboe”, which gives the reader an introduction into how quality coffee is produced, roasted, and brewed, has since been translated into Korean, English, Mandarin and will be available in Japanese shortly. Tim also published the book ”Finca Tamana” in 2013 about his ongoing work and relationship with the coffee producer Elias Roa and his farm Finca Tamana.--Want to see more? Among the many places people gather in Downtown Spartanburg to grab a meal or a drink, Little River Coffee Bar is certainly one of the busiest. Serving up espresso drinks and coffee in the Grain Distirct alongside its sister shops Cakehead Bakeshop and Hub City Bookshop, there's hardly a morning at The Coffee Bar where you won't see a who's who of important local figures getting their caffeine fix. Little River isn't just any coffee shop though.   For starters, all of the coffee served at Little River Coffee Bar is roasted at Little River Roasting, fewer than two miles away. Much of that coffee also comes from farms that have a direct relationship with Little River, farms located in in far-flung reaches of the world like Cameroon, Costa Rica, and the country . Today on the podcast, we sit down with Geier to get some details of their trip and the unique relationship this great local business has with its suppliers.
