This is the English version of a Middle Kingdom story preserved in Papyrus No. 1115 from the Hermitage Museum. In the Colophon, the scribe wrote that he copied the text from the manuscript of another scribe "with skilled fingers", ImenAa son of Imeny. The protagonists' names are unknown, because the Tale of the Shipwrecked Sailor isn't a true story, but it's a tale within a tale, perhaps an allegory.Music:TafiMaradiby Kevin MacLeod | https://incompetech.com/Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Creative Commons CC BY 3.0 https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/A Really Dark alley by LoyalityFreak Music, Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/African Moon by John Bartmann,Music promoted by https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/Sound Effects: http: //bigsoundbank.com by Joseph Sardin;http: //freesound.orgBibliography:M. BIBLE IN TEN

Tuesday, 22 August 2023   Then some of the officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him pleading that he would not venture into the theater. Acts 19:31   To be more precise, the words read, “And also some of the Asiarchs, being his friends, having sent to him, were imploring not to venture himself into the theater” (CG).     In the previous verse, it noted that Paul wanted to go to the people in the theater but that the disciples would not allow him. That continues now, saying, “And also some of the Asiarchs.” It is a word found only here in Scripture. Vincent's Word Studies says of them, “These were persons chosen from the province of Asia, on account of their influence and wealth, to preside at the public games and to defray their expenses.”   Charles Ellicott adds to this, saying, “The office was an annual one. They were ten in number, and the proconsul nominated one of them as president. Their duties led them now to one city, now to another, according as games or festivals were held, now at Ephesus, now at Colophon, or Smyrna. As connected both with the theatre and with the worship of Artemis, they were probably officially informed of the occasion of the tumult.”   Concerning these Asiarchs, Luke next records, “being his friends.” How he became connected to these men isn't stated. Likewise, it is unknown if they were believers or not. Regardless, Ellicott seems to be correct when he says, “There is something significant in the fact that the Asiarchs were St. Paul's friends. The manliness, tact, and courtesy which tempered his zeal and boldness, seem always to have gained for him the respect of men in authority: Sergius Paulus (Acts 13:7), Gallio (Acts 18:14-17), Festus and Agrippa (Acts 25:9; Acts 26:28; Acts 26:32), the centurion Julius (Acts 27:3; Acts 27:43).”   Paul was obviously bold and firm in his speaking. Therefore, whether he obtained converts of others or not, the men respected him for his character. Because they are noted as his friends, Luke continues with, “having sent to him.”   Whether they were in the theater and saw the riotous nature of the crowd, or whether they were elsewhere in the city and knew of what was occurring, they sent a messenger to Paul and “were imploring not to venture himself into the theater.”   These men were aware of Paul's character. They knew that if he went into the theater he would immediately go to where he could be heard and begin to speak up about the gospel. Having dealt with him in the past, they were certain this would be the case. They also knew that the fracas was because of him and his supposed undermining of Artemis.   All of this is either explicit or it can be deduced from the surrounding text. Knowing this, they begged him to refrain from entering, knowing that the outcome would result in certain harm to him.   Life application: As noted above, it is apparent that Paul was known to highly prominent men, not just in Asia but wherever he traveled. Even if they were not converts, he gained their respect as a person. His words and demeanor may have been totally directed to the sharing of the gospel. However, he did it in a manner that was bold and firm but not confrontational.   At times, one may come across a street preacher who yells out his message. He may stand and condemn everyone around him to hell for not accepting Jesus. These things may be true, but there is no reason for this type of conduct. To tell people that they need Jesus in order to be saved implies that they are not saved. If they are not saved, the implication is that they are already separated from God. People get this without being yelled at that they are sinners and are going to hell.   And the whole yelling thing. Yeah, right. If someone comes to your business and you start yelling at him, well, that won't go over well.   [Shouted loudly] “If you don't buy this extra insurance for your new appliance, you are an idiot!”   You will not sell many insurance policies that way. The same is true with selling hot dogs, promoting your plumbing business, etc. There is a way to convey the gospel message without yelling and/or accusation. Reading the evangelistic words of Paul in Acts will help you see how he conveyed the message. Even if his words were rejected, he was received as an honorable man.   The strong words of accusation by Paul (and by Jesus) were saved for those who claimed to be followers of the true God but who were not living according to their proclamation. For the unsaved, they were treated boldly in the message, but respectfully regardless of its acceptance or rejection. Follow this path and you will find that even if you meet with initial failure, you may later have success with those same people.   Heavenly Father, may we be wise and discerning in how we present the gospel to others. It is the message that saves. If we don't present it with respect and care, it will not only be rejected at first, but the encounter will be remembered by those who were offended by our presentation. Our goal should be to exalt You and this saving message, not to demean and condemn those who hear our words. Help us in this, O God. Amen.

In the interpretation of Parmenides of Elea, there is a certain vulgate, one widely represented in general histories of philosophy and indeed assumed by philosophers broadly. The metaphysical tenor and thrust of the philosophy of Parmenides, according to this vulgate, is holistic monism: "all things are one," in Greek, hen to pan. As it may be recalled, Parmenides reached his metaphysical conclusions by initially reflecting on the language of to mē on or to ouk on (either of which may be translated as "what is not," or "non-being," or "not being"). Famously, or notoriously, he did rule that there is something conceptually and logically unacceptable in speaking or thinking of "not being." Ascribing that initial philosophical move to Parmenides is certainly beyond dispute. The vulgate, however, adds that he must also have reflected on the language of "different" (heteron) and "other" (allo); and then he proceeded to draw powerful metaphysical inferences in the following way: If, with respect to some A and some B, we are to hold that A is "different from" (or "other than") B, or vice versa, then we are committed to holding that "A is not B" and "B is not A." But if grasping "not-being" is inherently impossible, it should likewise count impossible that we should conceive more narrowly of "A's not being B," or of "B's not being A." Once distinctions of any sort are logically disallowed, the metaphysical conclusion seems inevitable: hen to pan, "all things are one." The epistemological corollary of holistic monism is that the world humans experience, fraught as it is with plurality and pervasively splintered by distinctions, is ultimately and fundamentally an illusion. Alexander P. D. Mourelatos is Professor Emeritus in Philosophy and in Classics at The University of Texas at Austin, where in 1967 he founded and for twenty years directed, the Joint Classics-Philosophy Graduate Program in Ancient Philosophy. He is the author of The Route of Parmenides (1970; 2nd edn., 2008), and editor of The Pre-Socratics: A Collection of Critical Essays 1974; 2nd edn., 1993). Scholarly articles of his have appeared in journals in: philosophy; classics; ; history of science; and linguistics. On more than 170 occasions, he has delivered invited lectures at academic venues in North and South America, Europe, and Australasia. He received all his academic degrees from Yale University (Ph.D., 1964), and has been awarded two honorary doctorates in his native Greece (University of Athens, 1994; University of Crete, 2017). Students of his and colleagues have presanted him with two collections in his honor: in 2002, Presocratic Philosophy—Essays in Honour of Alexander Mourelatos; and in 2019, a special double issue of the periodical Philosophical Inquiry. He has held research appointments at: the University of Wisconsin, Madison; the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, NJ); the Center for Hellenic Studies (Washington, DC, Harvard University); Cambridge University; and the Australian National University. This podcast is an audio recording of Dr Mourelatos's talk - "Parmenides of Elea and Xenophanes of Colophon: the Conceptually Deeper Connections" - at the Aristotelian Society on 23rd May 2022. I have a calling; a book to deliver, “PaRDeSism ~ Human Science 101”; and a job to perform, PaRDeS Universal ReConstitution for World Repair. Title: “PaRDeSism ~ Human Science 101” Subtitle: (PaRDeS primevalism ~ treeseeding our original common-sense on the Bible’s Creation Story 1:1-2:3; World ReConstitution, from Crisis City to PaRaDiSe Earth) Author: Ricardo Turullols-Bonilla. Where: At Amazon Formats: In paperback and digital, in English and Spanish translation. As we are creative, here and now, the universe reconstitutes. 003_Catalonia, Iberia, New EU, by PaRDeS ReConstitution Dear World-Wide University Faculty, Students, and Alumni: Hi, I’m Ricardo Turullols-Bonilla, remote paternal ancestry Catalan and maternal Castilian, crypto Latino Jew, originally from Mexico, and UT, University of Texas at Austin Physics ’70, IC, Imperial College London, UNAM, National Autonomous University of Mexico, and UIA, Iberian American University, Mexico City. This makes me 5-way stakeholder in Catalonia’s Independence bid from Spain. My request is that we install a forum to dialogue University world-wide this issue ASAP. The end result has to be a win-win-win-win situation to all concerned, namely, Catalonia, Spain, Europe, and by extension, world-wide. We shouldn’t let a good crisis go to waste. In this singularity, unique state of affairs, it happens to be the case that the topic is the issue. What we have before us is a crisis of the mainstay of the West, what we understand by democracy. But here again, it’s not democracy alone that is at stake, rather, democracy might be the topic, but the issue is understanding. Let me first explain what I mean by saying that the topic of Catalonia’s independence bid from Spain, actually showcases the issue facing modernity moving forward. For too long we have been living out a stalemate situation of a prolonged crisis of Western civilization. The initial impulse given to the West by Israel, Greece, and Rome, has long since vanished into the gray background. What is now needed is a grassroots renewal, not more of the same top-down rancid Continental and Anglophone philosophies of postmodernity that miss the point to a considerable degree, if not entirely. Enough vitality has already been shed in useless struggles in the far and near past, that we surely need creativity to step up to the plate. Necessity is verily the mother of resourcefulness, and there’s nothing like a good crisis to put the stressed system to the test. The question is, will the globalized world of East-&-West deliver this time around? The understanding democracy theme is actually the issue of the primeval, the original common-sense, the ultimate source of reason. For reason is at the cornerstone of all learning, what universities do for a living, such that updating it would have a refreshing overall effect on civilization. I wrote a book precisely on the above theme, entitled “PaRDeSism ~ Human Science 101”, same that can be found on the Internet, in paperback and eBook format, in English, and in its Spanish translation. If we want the social edifice to continue ever higher, scraping the skies, then we need to concurrently dig deeper, till we reach bedrock. Nothing less than this will do on the long run. This essay addresses Crisis City, covering worldviews, starting with modernity of Newton; of the School of Athens, Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; of the three schools of the preSocratics, Thales of Miletus, the Milesian, Xenophanes of Colophon and Parmenides of Elea, the Eleatic, and Pythagoras of Samos, the Pythagorean; and finally, Moses of the Pentateuch Chumash Five Books, of the Kabbalah. What I found was that there is an ultimate cornerstone to reason, a primeval,

Moving the News Industry From Clickbait to Community

According to our guest on this episode, much of the news industry is engaged in a battle they can’t win, a fight over eyeballs and ad revenue with companies like Google and Facebook, where the terms will get worse and worse as time goes by. The answer? Community. By building a community that values the work that they create, they can wrestle back some of the control over their audience and receive support directly from the people who consume and appreciate the product they are creating. Andrew Losowsky is the project lead of The Coral Project, a collaboration between Mozilla, The New York Times and The Washington Post, that is helping news organizations build better communities and more loyal readers through tools, research and strategy. Among our topics: Forcing a layer of community over traditional journalism vs. providing newsrooms with a cogent plan Why they are building Talk, an open source comments platform Are news organizations better served by hiring another reporter… or a community pro? Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes “[Forcing community on newsrooms] is saying to journalists that they have to spend time in the comments without actually giving them the tools or the training to be able to do so effectively. … It looks like saying, ‘You need to ask your readers for help’ or ‘You need to crowdsource this’ or ‘Why don’t you go and talk to people at this event or in these comments?,’ without actually giving any strategy or thought to it. What you end up with is journalists who are very resentful of having another task placed on top of them. A task where they don’t see the connection between their journalistic work and this community work that they’re being asked to do.” -@losowsky “If you don’t understand and have a real commitment to community as part of your journalistic mission, as part of the strategy of what you’re trying to achieve in the totality of the newsroom, not just within one corner of the it, then it will, ultimately, always fail. We’ve seen this repeatedly. For me, a little part of me dies when I see that happen because what we’re really missing is the kinds of connections that journalism needs, in order to survive.” -@losowsky “Community is not a choice. The choice is what you do with it.” -@patrickokeefe “Right now, so much of the news industry’s revenue model is based around advertising and creating clickbait in order to get the numbers that will then get enough eyeballs on the advertising. I think this is a really shortsighted strategy. … Over half, I think, of the online advertising money goes directly to Facebook and Google. This is not a battle that the news industry is going to win. The terms are going to get worse and worse as you move forward from that. It really is antithetical to community because what you’re saying is, ‘I want people to come here, and I don’t care where they come from.’ Versus trying to build a community who value what we’re doing and will pay for it.” -@losowsky “If somebody flags a thousand times, and you’ve only ever deleted two of the comments they’ve flagged, then the next time they flag, maybe you don’t bring it straight to the moderator’s attention until somebody, who is more reliable as a flagger, does flag it. Then on the other side of that, if somebody is really good at flagging, if they flag 100 times and 90% of the time they end up flagging something that you end up deleting, they’re as good as our moderators. If they flag something, maybe we should just pull it for the moderator to look at immediately and just not have it there in the stream.” -@losowsky “The [real name] issue really comes down to whether or not people will behave better because of real names or maybe they will behave worse. If a name sounds like the person might identify as a woman, that can really change and worsen peoples’ behavior towards them. If there’s no way of hiding, if there’s no way of being anonymous, then you could be encouraging a great homogeneity in your community as a result, or/and encouraging different kinds of harassment and abuse.” -@losowsky About Andrew Losowsky Andrew Losowsky is originally from the UK and, since the age of 18, has lived in Hong Kong, Spain and now the U.S. In 2003, he became the editorial director of an indie Spanish editorial startup that built communities around original content. Andrew co-ran a biannual festival of independent publishing in Luxembourg, bringing together magazine makers from around the world. He has also been a John S. Knight Fellow at Stanford University and worked on product and editorial at News Corp and The Huffington Post. He co-created a pop-up magazine (created by a community of people stranded by a volcano), a community museum on a street, a printed time capsule, a human-sized board game about city development and a card game about community management. Andrew used to run an indie magazine subscription service and has written several books about design, print, visualizations and doorbells. He is currently the project lead at The Coral Project.
