Wally and Juanita Nelson were civil rights activists, peace activists, war tax refusers, subsistence farmers, and advocates for simple living. They were members of groups such as CORE (Congress on Racial Equality), FOR (Fellowship of Reconciliation), and Peacemakers. In western Massachusetts they were founding members of the Greenfield Farmers' Market, the Free Harvest Supper, the Valley Community Land Trust, and Winter Fare. They were recipients of numerous awards during their lifetime, including the Courage of Conscience Award from the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Mass., the Sacco and Vanzetti Award from Community Church in Boston, and the Local Hero Award from CISA (Community Involved in Sustaining Agriculture) for championing local food and agriculture. (Excerpted from https://www.nelsonhomestead.org) As folklorists, gatherers of oral testimonials and audio producers, we Klines, along with production assistant Nicholas Boyer, produced an hour-long audio tapestry. This is an interweaving of many of the 25 voices we've recorded near and far under the guidance of the Nelson Legacy Project Archival Committee. Each interview averages 90 minutes. We excerpt short portions in order to weave a conversation on the themes of the Nelsons' lives—race, or the one human race, nonviolence, war tax refusal, joy, dance, land trusts and the action around the Kehler-Corner home seizure in Colrain by the IRS, the local food movement and simple living. Most all of our documentaries have music woven throughout. We created a short piece on the Nelsons called You Don't Gotta. You can hear it on the Project website where you can also enjoy a great many other audiovisual pieces and writings featuring the Nelsons.

Many of us hope that our presence will help make the world a better place than we found it. The way we go about this is deeply rooted in personal choice. One of the most profound and impactful choices I made was to switch my diet and lifestyle to a plant based one. I turned vegetarian in 2008 and vegan a couple of years after. Or, to be more precise, AVAP, as my philosophy is, the acronym standing for As Vegan As Possible. I found that everything I cared most about was connected to the food choices I make. With plant based food I choose animal and planetary welfare, fairer food systems and more social justice and, as far as my own welfare is concerned, better mental, physical and spiritual health. Plant based foods help me support systems and philosophies that align with my principles. The way we eat can truly be revolutionary and evolutionary. That is why I live a plant fueled life. And today's guest is a leading mind and heart of the vegan movement.Dr. Will Tuttle is a visionary author, spiritual activist, educator, and inspirational speaker. He has been vegan for over 40 years and wrote the acclaimed Amazon #1 best-seller The World Peace Diet: Eating For Spiritual Health And Social Harmony, published in 15 languages. SPECIAL EPISODE!!! Live Talk Art!!! Robert Diament meets legendary artist Ai Weiwei (*1957, Beijing) recorded at Kite Festival, Oxfordshire on 12th June 2022. Ai Weiwei lives and works in multiple locations, including Beijing (China), Berlin (Germany), Cambridge (UK) and Lisbon (Portugal). He is a multimedia artist who also works in film, writing and social media. Special thanks to Tortoise Media, Tom Macklin and the wonderful team at Kite Festival."Expressing oneself is a part of being human. To be deprived of a voice is to be told you are not a participant in society; ultimately it is a denial of humanity." www.aiweiwei.comAi Weiwei is renowned for making strong aesthetic statements that resonate with timely phenomena across today's geopolitical world. From architecture to installations, social media to documentaries, Ai uses a wide range of mediums as expressions of new ways for his audiences to examine society and its values. Recent exhibitions include: Ai Weiwei: Resetting Memories at MARCO in Monterrey, Ai Weiwei: Bare Life at the Mildred Lane Kemper Museum in St. Louis, Ai Weiwei at the K20/K21 in Dusseldorf, and Good Fences Make Good Neighbors with the Public Art Fund in New York City.Ai was born in Beijing in 1957 and currently resides and works in Berlin. Ai is the recipient of the 2015 Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International and the 2012 Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent from the Human Rights Foundation.A global citizen, artist and thinker, Ai Weiwei moves between modes of production and investigation, subject to the direction and outcome of his research, whether into the Chinese earthquake of 2008 (for works such as Straight, 2008-12 and Remembering, 2009) or the worldwide plight of refugees and forced migrants (for Law of the Journey and his feature-length documentary, Human Flow, both 2017). From early iconoclastic positions in regards to authority and history, which included Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn and a series of middle-finger salutes to sites of power, Study of Perspective (both 1995), Ai's production expanded to encompass architecture, public art and performance. Beyond concerns of form or protest, Ai now measures our existence in relation to economic, political, natural and social forces, uniting craftsmanship with conceptual creativity. Universal symbols of humanity and community, such as bicycles, flowers and trees, as well as the perennial problems of borders and conflicts are given renewed potency though installations, sculptures, films and photographs, while Ai continues to speak out publicly on issues he believes important. He is one of the leading cultural figures of his generation and serves as an example for free expression both in China and internationally.Follow @aiww on Instagram and @aiww on Twitter. The video of our conversation is here on YouTube. We discuss: 00:00 Welcome 01:24 Ingrid's Intro - Building PETA, the world's largest animal advocacy organisation - Writing 14 books including "Free The Animals" about the Animal Liberation Front 03:39 What's Real? - "We are all creatures of our upbringing" - A strict, "victorian" father & a very kind mother - "I was shipped out to boarding school & raised by some disciplinarian nuns" - Nuns took out their bitterness on the "little rich girls" in their care - Rejecting the nuns' oppression helped motivate Ingrid to be rebellious, to fight for the powerless & seek justice - Earliest memory: Family dog "was like my brother" - Church on Sunday, but "it never really stuck with me" - Being lured into religiosity, but "it was a passing phase" - "I rejected what the nuns said because they were so ghastly" - Roman Catholicism. Praying at 6am every morning, "a lot of silence" - "We didn't respect the nuns... they were barbaric... even of the little kids... 5 & 6 year olds who would cry themselves to sleep" - A visiting Jesuit priest got one of the school-girls pregnant - "For a while I would cross the road if I saw a nun coming the other direction" - Later re-engaging with Christianity (bible, church)... "ultimately I completely rejected it... it made no sense at all... if there is a god it's... a cruel god or a powerless god" - Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster - "I'm not afraid to say I'm an atheist" - "Ricky Gervais & Bill Maher... are not kowtowing... are not intimidated" - The imperative to speak out (where others can't) - Being told to accept "mystery" on face value, "absurd" stories & blind faith - Lisa Kemmerer's views on religious compassion for non-human animals ...and much more. Curtis Sliwa is New York City's 2021 Republican Mayoral Candidate. The general election will be held on Tuesday November 2, 2021. Born in 1954 in Canarsie, Brooklyn, to a Catholic family of Polish and Italian descent, Curtis opened the first recycling center in Brooklyn when he was 14. Known as the teenage “neighborhood junk collector,” he collected empty cans, glass bottles, newspapers, and scrap metal, storing them in his basement after preparing them for recycling. At 15, while delivering newspapers, Curtis saved a family from their burning home. He made three trips into the burning building and saved six people's lives. For his heroism, he was named Newspaper Boy of the Year by the Daily News and was honored at the White House for his act by President Nixon. In the late 70's, while working as a night manager at a McDonalds in the Bronx, Curtis formed a group called the “Rock Brigade.” The goal was to clean up a neglected New York City. To make up for a scarcity of police patrols, Curtis retooled the focus of the volunteer effort to fill the void in crime fighting and the group took to the subway. The 13-member, multi-racial team of volunteers became known as “The Magnificent Thirteen.” The group agreed to ride the subways between the toughest stops, without weapons, to help put a stop to the crimes occurring to citizens riding the subway system. These courageous volunteers would look for gang members who had been mugging straphangers in the subway and detain them for the police to arrest. Many times, simply their presence would act as a deterrent to illegal activity. As word spread of "The Magnificent Thirteen" and their heroic deeds, more rushed to join the efforts. On February 13, 1979, Curtis created “The Guardian Angels.” Volunteers of all ages go through weeks-long rigorous training, in which they learn martial arts techniques in order to defend themselves, enforce discipline, and make legal citizens' arrests, all without the use of weapons. Men and women in "The Guardian Angels" are recognizable in their bright red berets and military-like bomber jackets. These unarmed volunteers patrol the streets and subways, often in groups, keeping a watchful eye over the city. Curtis began his media career in 1990, where he started as a radio broadcaster at WABC-AM. He hosted various radio programs on WABC, and in 2000, became the co-host of the long-running Curtis and Kuby in the morning. In 1992, Curtis received the prestigious Courage of Conscience Award from the Peace Abbey at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston for his work of establishing the Guardian Angels in major cities on every continent in the world. On this episode, Curtis shares his one way ticket to the “Theatre of the Mind”. He also shares his mayoral platform and life with his wife Nancy and their 16 rescue cats in a 328 sq. ft. Upper West Side apartment. Curtis Sliwa is just one of the engaging personalities featured on The One Way Ticket Show, where Host Steven Shalowitz explores with his guests where they would go if given a one way ticket, no coming back. Their destinations may be in the past, present, future, real, imaginary or a state of mind. My guest today, Kumi Naidoo, is Secretary General of Amnesty International. He's a longtime activist and civil society leader who joined the anti-apartheid movement as a teenager and for many years lead Greenpeace. In September, ahead of the UN Climate Summit, Amnesty International conferred its highest honor, the Ambassador of Conscience Award, to Greta Thunberg and the Friday's for the Future Movement. In this conversation I sought to draw out Kumi Naidoo's perspective as a longtime activist on this burgeoning transnational youth climate movement. That is the focus of much of our conversation in this episode. We met in Amnesty's offices across the street from the United Nations, where days earlier hundreds of young people gathered for a Youth Climate Action summit. From a UN perspective, this was a pretty interesting and unique event. And Secretary General Antonio Guterres was very transparent that he sought this kind of youth engagement as a means to pressure government to take more meaningful action on climate change. We kick off discussing what impact he's seen from this youth movement around the UN and beyond. At times this conversation gets heavy. And I just want to thank Kumi Naidoo for both taking the time to speak during a very busy UNGA week and more importantly. https://www.patreon.com/GlobalDispatches

Russ takes Amnesty International to task for honoring Colin Kaepernick with its Ambassador of Conscience Award. Plus changes coming for college basketball....And the embarrassing situation at WFAN!!
On today's episode of The Daily Daily Caller Podcast, we talk about the outrage police demanding Shania Twain apologize for committing the biggest sin in the liberal world --- saying she would have voted for Donald Trump. The angry mob will never forgive anyone who commits this sin, no matter how much they apologize, and by apologizing they alienate half the country. But why Twain was asked the question in the first place in the real question. She's Canadian and a singer, why bother bringing it up? We explore. Former NFL kicker Jay Feely got the same treatment --- the demand for an apology --- because he posted a funny picture with his daughter and her prom date while he was holding a gun. Liberals are relentless. But one celebrity didn't apologize over the weekend, standing by his support for a conservative black woman and her free-thinking. Kanye West angered liberals with his support for independent thought, which tells you a lot about the modern left. Former NFL quarterback and current idiot Colin Kaepernick was in the news for being awarded the "Ambassador of Conscience Award" from Amnesty International for calling everyone and everything racist. That's all it takes these days. Kaepernick was, naturally, ignorant of reality when he said, "Racialized oppression and dehumanization is woven into the very fabric of our nation --- the effects of which can be seen in the lawful lynching of black and brown people by the police, and the mass incarceration of black and brown lives in the prison industrial complex." We correct the record. Finally, the ultimate victim has re-emerged to plant her flag atop Martyr Mountain. Hillary Clinton, in a new book, is quoted as saying, "They were never going to let me be president," upon hearing the news that she'd lost on election night. Who are the "they" and how did they prevent her from campaigning in Wisconsin? She doesn't say, and we mock her for it. The Daily Daily Caller Podcast is a daily look and mocking of the news from a conservative perspective. Hosted by Derek Hunter, it is available in audio form Monday-Thursday and will have a video option on Fridays. Derek Hunter is a columnist and contributing editor for The Daily Caller and author of “Outrage, INC: How the Liberal Mob Ruined Science, Journalism, and Hollywood” from HarperCollins, available June 19. Episode 6 of "That's What I'm Saying!" the podcast, finds Shaun and Ny extolling the beautiful black magic and “melanin poppin’” in Miami’s social scene. The conversation continues with a remembrance of Prince on the 2nd anniversary of his death (along with Shaun’s “heard-it-thru-the-grapevine” tidbit about the Purple Ones illustrious "peen hair"), how everybody around the Pied Piper, R. Kelly is jumping ship, Colin Kaepernick’s Ambassador of Conscience Award, and the story of Lakeith Smith, who was sentenced to 65 years in jail for the murder of his friend who was killed by police. The weekend D**k report answers a subscriber’s question about pursuing an old relationship. The episode ends with the ladies reminiscing over the DMX classic, “Ruff Ryders Anthem”.

In 1994, Howard Zinn presented Barry Crimmins along with Maya Angelou "The Courage of Conscience Award" from Wellesley College and the Life Experience School at the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Massachusetts. Barry's friend Howard Zinn did the presenting that day. His work as an activist, journalist and performer has taken him everywhere from the American campaign trail to war zones in Central America to Camp Casey on the perimeter of the George W. Bush compound in Craw-Ford, Texas. On June 4, 2016, Barry shot an hour special in Lawrence, Kansas for Louis C.K.'s Pig Newton Productions. Barry is a true American comedy legend who never rests on his laurels, instead building each performance on a lifetime of remarkable experiences and a comic mind that has made him into the one-of-a-kind comic you really need to see.

Founder of NABFEME, the National Association of Black Female Executives in Music & Entertainment, Inc., and creator of the Women Who Jam! an all female artistic movement, Johnnie Walker holds the distinction of being named the first female Sr. Vice President of Promotion for the Island Def Jam Music Group and the only female to ever hold that position for the company. In 2005, Walker was honored with the Woman of Conscience Award from Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rainbow/PUSH. Ms Walker also received Delta Sigma Theta’s 2006 Osceola Award, the highest honor given to professionals in the arts. In 2009 Women’s eNews named Walker as one of New York's 21 Leaders for the 21st Century. In 2010, Memphis newspaper, the Tri State Defender, named Johnnie Walker a “Woman of Excellence.” Walker’s career began as a country music radio personality. She later segued to a Black music radio opportunity in Memphis, TN at KRNB. In 1989, Johnnie Walker's marketing zeal brought her to the attention of Russell Simmons at Def Jam Recordings, where he wooed her from a career in radio broadcasting to become one of the label’s regional marketing reps. Within one year she was promoted from Regional Promotions Manager, to National Director of Promotion. The Sr. National Director position soon followed and positioned Johnnie to be instrumental in launching the careers of Redman, Method Man, Onyx, Montell Jordan and Foxy Brown! In 1997, Johnnie continued her "WIN" philosophy with a move to New York City where she assumed the position of Vice President of Promotion for Def Jam Recordings, Inc. Two years later, she restructured the company’s promotions department, created their much sought after “R&B Radio Promotions Guide,” and hired the company’s first national promotions field staff. This was most significant because the staff was primarily comprised of young, inexperienced field reps that Johnnie molded into a "winning force." Together, this force successfully marketed the Def Comedy Jam, Phat Farm clothing and Russell Simmons' co-produced movies, "The Nutty Professor,” Jackie Chan’s “Rush Hour 1 and 2” plus several #1 Gold and Platinum albums from Public Enemy, Jay-Z, Sisqo, Kelly Price, Ashanti, Ja Rule, DMX, LL Cool J, Musiq Soulchild, Dru Hill and others. In 2004 after 15 years of tenure at Def Jam Recordings, Johnnie Walker moved to Los Angeles, CA and accepted the position of Head of Black Music for DreamWorks Records, handling the musical careers of The Isley Brothers, Floetry, Burt Bacharach, Jon B and many others.
