The rigidness of expectation on male behavior from our culture is mirrored in the rigidness in the bodies of men. We internalize messages about how we're supposed to hold ourselves and act, and these messages literally shape our bodies. It can take a lifetime to assess and address the implications of this. When we are held back from expressing our authentic desires, we restrict the flow of our life's force. When we allow social expectations to limit our behavior, we stifle vital parts of ourselves. This episode identifies areas in which this commonly happens for men and outlines strategies for giving ourselves more freedom.--Follow Gentle Man on other platforms:https://www.instagram.com/gentlemanpodcast/https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCbQdEk0mgyXDsql7PPyqUQAhttps://www.tiktok.com/@gentlemanpodcasthttps://gentlemanpodcast.org/#boys #men #manhood #masculinity #feminism #maleviolence

Now we know that sounds like a big task and a huge ask, but we did it. I think we did it. OBAB:We did it. We finally made OBAB, Occlusion Basics and Beyond. And we've really, really worked our butts off to give you an occlusion course that is gonna be applicable to real world dentistry. So, what's included in this pre-launch deal? We've got five different things for you. First of all is the OBAB starter kit. We're gonna send you a starter kit so you can start implementing the concepts we're gonna teach you straight away on Monday. It's got a Huffman leaf gauge we imported from the US and this is our favorite leaf gauge. It's also got a pack of shim stock in it, so you don't have to use your fat fingers every time. We're gonna send you a pair of Miller forceps as well. The start kit is worth a hundred pounds and we'll start shipping it once the course access begins on 7th of April. I think really anyone interested in occlusion, whether you are at the beginning of your career in the middle, or even getting towards the end would learn a huge amount from this particular program. The second benefit of this pre-launch deal is we're gonna give you 500 pounds off of the cost of the course, and you can take our word for it, that we are never gonna price it this low ever again. And this course truly has an unbelievable return on investment. The third benefit of the pre-launch deal is that instead of getting 12 months of access, we're gonna extend that. So you get two whole years of oab and that's a no extra charge, and we're gonna be adding lots of new cases and content as we go. I felt like I finally understood topics that I just struggled to wrap my head around for years. And that's purely down to the way in which the content's delivered. The fourth benefit of this pre-launch deal is you'll get one fully mentored case with us incl...

Abstract: The endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is physically connected to the cell nucleus via junctions with the nuclear envelope (NE). These ER-NE junctions are essential for supplying the NE with lipids and transmembrane proteins that are synthesized in the ER. Despite the important role of ER-NE junctions, their biogenesis, architecture and maintenance across the cell cycle has remained elusive. In this study, by combining live cell imaging with quantitative three-dimensional electron microscopy, we systematically elucidated the ultrastructure of ER-NE junctions in mammalian cells. We discovered that ER-NE junctions exhibit a constricted hourglass shape that is different from the junctions within the ER. When ER-NE junctions are newly built during NE assembly at mitotic exit, their morphology resembles ER-ER junctions, but they become constricted starting in telophase. Altogether, our findings imply novel mechanisms that remodel ER-NE junctions and have functional implications for the lipid and protein traffic that are crucial for nuclear function. Confirmation bias 2. Complexity bias 3. Community bias 4. Comfort and compancency bias 5. Confidence bias 6. Conspiracy bias 7. Catastrophe/normalcy bias  8. Cash bias.  Books referenced in this episode:  “Do I Stay Christian?” By Brian McLaren 2. Origins of Power by D. I also unpack mercy and grace as critical components of a Christian worldview; grand examples and daily examples. Along the way I tell a couple stories about having worked at a Burger King as a young man. Come think and laugh with me.

Have you ever thought about intentionally designing your life? The beginning of our lives are usually shaped by external factors and people like our parents, teachers, communities, and culture. Once you reach a certain point, you might realize that you want to live with intention and design a life of your choosing. You don’t have to wait until your in your 50s to do this, but that’s what happened to my guest Kelley Connors. She reached a point in her life where she decided it was time to be brave and take charge of the second half of her life and live with the kind of impact that she wanted to make. She even became a coach, so that she can help others do the same. In this inspiring episode, we talk about choosing a pathway that works for you, practicing the power of positivity, the importance of slowing down, and how Kelley helps people navigate through awareness. Show Notes [04:47] When Kelley turned 50, she started thinking about the second half of her life. She thought it would be great if she could be more of a designer of her life and be more intentional instead of just living out habits. If she was more aware of what was possible in her life, would she create a different future for herself? [05:40] She decided to help other women do the same thing and learn from the experiences that she had. [06:59] Something may just stir in you, and you might realize that you want to live with more impact in your life. [08:23] You are worthy of a life where you can work well, live well, and thrive. [09:24] We've been shaped by parents, teachers, neighborhoods, and culture by the time we're in our early twenties. These are external factors that impact how we see our life. [09:51] Reshaping your life requires an understanding and belief that you can let go of those habits. [11:39] We evolve throughout our whole life with experiences, but we also have the ability to change our thoughts. [12:48] We are now more aware than ever because of communication and mindfulness. [14:24] The first steps are slowing down and pausing. Use the power of whole being. [15:24] Recognize that your body is connected to your head. Bring awareness to how you are feeling in your body. [18:06] Constricted energy points are fear, and bravery is an everyday opportunity to break through fear and feel vulnerable and connect with others. [19:37] Getting in touch with your gifts is finding what you can offer the world that makes you happy. [24:03] Coaching is different than consulting, because you have to inspire people with a promise of something better. [26:55] There's new research that says self-reflective people are more creative. Solitude improves your ability to be self-reflective and that improves your ability to be creative. [30:23] Energy is your superpower as you age. You have to be smarter with how you use energy. [31:28] You can generate life force with positive thoughts. [32:34] Kelley has learned by quieting down and being interested in others. She also reads a lot. She has been learning from other people, because she is writing a book about bravery. [35:49] Kelley is launching a Life Work Collaborative so others can reignite their life's work. [37:41] Social media actually disconnects us. [38:41] Kelley's mom was a key inspirational figure in her life, and she became that even more so after she had a stroke and became disabled. [39:39] If we knew more about others, we would be happier. [42:19] It's important to have a couple of good friends in your inner circle. [43:19] Spend some time every day and slow down and be quiet. Notice your breath and embrace positive thoughts. PatiencePatience is a virtue that is related to endurance. You don't have to have it when things are as you would like them to be. You need patience when, from a certain perspective, your situation is not tenable long-term. I say "from a certain perspective," because what it is really about is focus. If you focus on that which has not arrived yet, the pain of lack can be a source of unbearable suffering. You must intentionally focus on other things. Know that things will be alright again. Then you will exercise patience, and it will be less of a burden to you. Enduring lack is a matter of directing your attention to areas relatively untouched by the lack. There is a certain kind of discipline in this. Therefore, patience is a discipline. Some Notes on PatienceThis piece is agonizingly slow and constricted. I achieve this effect in a few different ways. Firstly, the piece, overall, and especially at the beginning is at a very slow tempo and contains chords that are very compressed, in terms of register. The piece is (generally) in a minor; a very gray, withdrawn key. When the melody does come out, it is in a high register; it tends to "dwell on" (that is, repeat) particular phrases, almost to the point of being an ostinato; but it does move - barely.Eventually, the "patience" of the melody is "rewarded" by some polyphonic integration, as a couple of melodic strands move with it, and integrate with it, and then the piece concludes on a hopeful note, but at the very end, the melody hangs on the seventh scale degree, and doesn't resolve. Within the compressed space of the piece, there is a significant amount of harmonic exploration, and even a couple of key changes, reflecting a complex stew of emotions with very slow and gradual forward movement.Copyright, Philip John Cornell, 2018, some rights reserved. Make sure you check out Part One ERP 095: How Your Beliefs Can Destroy Your Relationship, if you missed it. In this episode, you will learn why we can go from anticipating the best about our partners and relationship to anticipating the worst (as a form of protection). When we are triggered, we are more likely to react and jump to conclusions. Therefore, it is important to slow down. so that we can calm our nervous system and enable our higher level thinking. In turn, this will help us engage in a more progressive and productive process. (Please listen to the podcast episode or read the transcript to hear more explanations, stories and examples.) HOW OUR BELIEFS AFFECT US The field of psychology teaches us that our thoughts, feelings, and physiology are all connected and interrelated. The beliefs we hold affect our thinking, feeling, body, as well as the way we behave and relate. Here is an example: Belief: “I am ugly” Thought: “No one will ever be interested in me.” Emotion: Feeling sad, alone, and depressed. Body: Bad posture, turned away, looking down. Action: Will not take care of appearance and will not actively engage with others. Result: Little positive social feedback, as people will not have much a chance to relate. POINTS OF CHANGE It is easier to change our thinking and physiology than it is to change our emotions. Deepen our breath to calm our nervous system or change our body posture to increase confidence. Reframe our thinking to get to a more balanced thought. OUR NEGATIVE VIEWS When we go through a difficult time, it is natural to try to make sense of the situation. However, if we let our fear, reactivity, and protection mechanisms run the show, then we are at great risk of pathologizing our partners, ourselves, or our relationships. Here are things we typically say: “If he would only communicate with me, we wouldn’t have any problems. He has issues.” “If she would just control her anger, we would be fine. She is the problem.” “Maybe I am not relationship material.” “Maybe I am not meant to be with anyone.” “Maybe we were never meant to be.” “Who were we kidding? We are such a joke.” A NEGATIVE BELIEF IN ACTION VS A BALANCED BELIEF IN ACTION Let’s look at one possibility of how a negative beliefs can impact our thinking, feeling, and behaving: Belief: “He can’t communicate. If he would only communicate with me, we wouldn’t have any problems.” Thinking: “He can’t give me what I need. He has issues. He doesn’t really want to be close. I should have picked someone different.” Emotion: Feel hurt. Feel wronged. Feel unhappy. Feel scared. Feel sad and upset. Feel angry. Feel hopeless. Body: Either slumped posture and looking down. Or arms crossed, hand on the hip, and piercing eyes. Actions: Ask questions with a negative tone of voice. Ask questions expecting there to be no quality reply. Ask leading questions or close-ended questions. Ask questions at inopportune times. Result: Further disconnect. Disagreements. Misunderstandings. Upset. Conflict. Negative patterns ensues. Let’s take the same concern and look at another possibility of what a more balanced belief might look like in action: Belief: “Communicating verbally isn’t as easy or natural for him.” Thinking: “I wonder what ways he likes to share his experience. When does he open more to me?” Emotion: Feeling curious. Feeling interested. Feeling hopeful. Feeling patient and trusting. Body: Alert. Leaning towards. Good eye contact. Open posture. Actions: Seeking to understand. Trying to help. Treading carefully. Genuinely curious and accepting Result: Better communication. More goodwill. Willing to work together. Feeling more connected. Understanding each other more. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A NEGATIVE BELIEF IN ACTION VS A BALANCED BELIEF IN ACTION Let’s look at a Listener’s question: What if my partner isn’t interested in or doesn’t have faith in the process? An example of a negative belief playing out: Belief: “This is stupid.” (working on the relationship…talking, therapy, or coaching) Thinking: “I am not going to get anything out of this. This will never work.” Emotion: Annoyed. Angry. Frustrated. Resentful. Body: Arms folded. Muscles tight. Defensive posture. Closed off. Shut down. Constricted breathing. Action: Ready to leave. Looking for an opportunity to get out of the conversation and disengage. Avoid. Blame. Not really listening, and not trying to understand. Result: No positive result. No progress. Separation. Divorce. An example of a balanced belief playing out: Belief: “I am not sure if this will work, but I am willing to try.” Thinking: “This is uncomfortable. I am not sure what I am suppose to do.” Emotion: Uncomfortable. Anxious. Excited. Hopeful. Scared. Vulnerable. Body: A little on edge. Working on trying to stay calm. Trying to take a few deep breaths. Posture alert and upright. Action: Keeping an open mind. Willing to try. Result: Likely, with some good guidance, they will begin to build safety and make progress together. HOW TO WORK WITH A NEGATIVE BELIEF Unpacking our beliefs, so that we can explore them, look at them, constructively work with them usually takes a process. If you are interested in getting support, please contact me. I would be happy to explore the option of coaching or a program with you. In the meantime, here are some reflection questions for you to consider (assuming you have calmed down enough, so that you can think and assess a little more clearly): Pay very close attention to your internal dialogue. Check out your thinking. What do you say to yourself? Is what I am thinking really true? What might this say about a belief you are holding? What are your feelings in this scenario? What does your body feel like within the situation? What are your behaviors? What action do you take? What is the outcome or result? How might I be seeing this from the lense of my old experience? We all know that music makes us feel good and that it can help us relax. We also know that chronic stress causes blood vessels to become rigid and the risk for arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) increases as we age. But did you know that music can affect our cardiovascular system? CNN posted an article recently about some research a cardiologist did with music. The story concludes that - Music, like laughter, opens up blood vessels and produces protective chemicals - Constricted vessels can lead to high blood pressure, increase heart attack risk - Hospitals across the country use music therapy to help patients heal This week I'll be discussing that article and talking about music therapy and cardiovascular health.
