After Craig Newmark moved to San Franciso in 1995, he had a simple idea: a mailing list to share local events with friends. It wasn't fancy and certainly wasn't meant to change the world. However, as the list grew, people began calling it “Craigslist,” unknowingly naming what would become a billion-dollar digital marketplace. In this episode, Craig joins Ilana to share his journey, from creating Craigslist without VC funding to stepping down as CEO to focus on customer service. He also discusses how his moral compass continues to shape his work, including his mission in cybersecurity and his support for veterans and military families. Craig Newmark is an internet entrepreneur, philanthropist, and the founder of Craigslist, the online classified ads platform that transformed how people buy, sell, and connect. As a philanthropist, he supports causes related to veterans, journalism, tech ethics, and cybersecurity. OK lets kick off 2024 with some small project car talk. We're pumped for the Rolex 24 hour race. We discuss how the same amount of time has passed between 1980 and 1917 as 1980 to 2023, which is wrong, it's actually 1937 to 1980. With assumable mortgages, you can snag a three percent interest rate even in 2023's high-interest environment. These loans exist everywhere around you—you could be sitting on an assumable loan without even knowing it! So, if there's a way to pick up properties at all-time low-interest rates, why isn't everyone taking advantage of assumable mortgages? We brought Craig O'Boyle from Assumption Solutions on to the show to explain. Assumable mortgages aren't new, but most real estate agents, loan brokers, and homebuyers have no idea what they are. In practice, an assumable mortgage allows a homebuyer to “assume” a seller's loan with the same interest rate, contingencies, and principal paydown as the seller. This means you can walk into a home with significant equity, a low-interest rate, and the same fix-rated loan you'd be picking up from a bank. But, if you want an assumable mortgage, you'll need to know where to find one. Craig walks us through the ins and outs of assumable mortgages, where investors can find one, why most mortgage lenders and brokers don't know about them, and one BIG caveat you'll need to hear before you chase down this better financing. Want a lower rate and monthly payment with higher cash flow? Stick around; we'll give you everything you need to know to find a low-interest assumable loan in your area! In This Episode We Cover Assumable mortgages explained and why a bank would allow a buyer to assume a loan Assumable loans vs. subject to and how one strategy is far riskier than the other Fees you can expect to pay when purchasing a property with an assumable mortgage House hacking and using assumable loans to profit off your primary residence The three types of loans that can be assumable (and others that WON'T work) The “assumption gap” and money you'll need at closing to get the deal done And So Much More! Welcome! Good morning, everybody. I was on with Mr. Jim Polito this morning and as you know today is Primary Day in New Hampshire it is the Big Day for our State Sport - Politics. That means it is the day to address voter manipulation, voter fraud, low tech solutions and why apps are not the answer. So, here we go with Mr. Polito. For more tech tips, news, and updates visit - CraigPeterson.com --- Automated Machine Generated Transcript: Craig You've got this free little cute little game, isn't this fun to play? Well, that game is tracking you everywhere you're going. They sell that information to Marketers. Now the Department of Homeland Security is even buying that data of where you are which apps you're using. Just because you have these apps installed on your phone. Craig Good morning, Craig Peterson, here. That's me with Danny, and it was pretty much all about voting technologies, the new stuff that's coming out the problems we have right now. And my predictions for not just this election, but frankly for the next two or three presidential cycles. Danny Yes, it is Tuesday. 840 You know what time that is? It is time for tech talk guru Craig Peterson. Hi Craig. Craig Hey, good morning, Danny. Craig I've got a little clarification about info from one of your former guests this morning. An earlier guest, I should say this morning. He was talking quite rightly by the about all of these apps and what's been in the news, in fact, just this week about apps and how dangerous they can be how they've been tracking, Google just removed a whole bunch of extensions from the Google Chrome Store. I want to go into slightly more detail if you want it to be secure. Don't download an app you don't need. Another thing I've said forever, Danny, is that you should go through your phone, at least every month, and delete apps you're not using. You know, most of us have a lot of apps. I think the last stat I SAW said that about 95% of the apps that we've downloaded only get used once. It's like we're never using them. Delete them off of your phone, off of your tablet, whatever it is you have. I want to add one more thing from a safety standpoint. Even if you are using an app fairly regularly, go ahead and delete it anyway, and then reinstall it. When you reinstall it now, it's going to ask for permission. You're going to be able to have a closer look at that app that again. It may be one you use every day like Google Maps. Believe that when you reinstall it and pay close attention to the permissions that it wants to access. By the way, just because it doesn't ask for permission to share some of your information doesn't mean it's not going to, all right. But as a general rule, those permissions are correct. It's more confusing on Android than it is iOS. Android kind of pushes you on to you the decision about whether or not you should be installing that app. On the iOS side, it's a lot more straightforward than Apple's a little bit better about it. He had some super points. But I go one step further. Just delete the silly things, mainly if you're not using them, as you mentioned, bringing up the app and permitting it. Danny So what kind of permission should people be looking for Craig to allow it not to? Craig Yeah, there you go. Well, let's have a look at the most costly divorce in history, which we talked about a couple of weeks ago. Right. So you have Bezos. Yeah, exactly. Billions of dollars in a divorce settlement. How did that all start? Well, that started because he was using WhatsApp, which is an app that is now part of Facebook's family. What WhatsApp had done here is accepted a video, and Jeff Bezos had allowed WhatsApp access to his photos and his videos. Even though you might think, oh, what's the harm and giving it access to my pictures or videos, maybe you're not going to get the virus the Jeff Besos got, but the app has access to your photos, your videos or other things. If there's a bug in the app, if there's something malicious going on, you're going to lose that data. What should you give an app permission to do? That? I think one of the worse things you can do is to permit access to know your location. That data is used and sold. You know, you've got this free little cute little game. Isn't this fun to play? And that game is tracking you everywhere you're going it's been sold to Marketers. Now the Department of Homeland Security is even buying that data of where you are which apps you're using, just because you have these apps installed on your phone. In answer directly to your question, do not give them access to your location unless you absolutely want to. I'm even reluctant to give Google Maps access to my location. Right? But slightly paranoid on that front. As far as photos and videos and things, again, just don't give them access. I think we're at the point now, where the bottom line is, you should only have a half a dozen apps on your phone on your tablet. And they should be apps from the big guys. You know Apple's apps, Microsoft apps, Google's apps, they are moderately trustworthy. And pretty much everything else. I think you shouldn't say bye-bye to them. ya know, Danny Ya know, that's kind of it sounds like a good plan. We are talking with Tech Talk Guru Craig Peterson, all about apps, and the security behind apps and then allowing permissions and them using your data to sell, and basically, you become the client. Correct. So these free apps not necessarily free, buddy. Craig No, they're not. And here's another trick, right? If you want to use something, and the app is available, most of the time, there's a website you can go to instead. So, for instance, you might download The let's use Iheart as an example. All right, so IHeart Radio has an app. I use it all the time, right? I'm, I listened to it to listen to my favorite radio shows listen to the gym in the morning. Iheart also has a website that you can visit. Okay, so rather than having the app, just use the browser that comes with your phone, use Safari, which is a good browser on iOS, use one of the Firefox browsers from Mozilla, those are all very good. If someone's twisting your arm with a gun to your head, use Google Chrome. Use the browser to get the data you want to you can stream music from your browser, you can listen to it hard from your browser, you can do all of the reading of news that you might want to do from your browser and avoid the cute apps. Aren't they wonderful? Aren't they fun? But you know what? There are so many Very few apps that can be classified as safe, that it's just not worth it. Danny Speaking of Google Chrome, speaking of extensions, speaking of people, basically using your uploading your private information, the Google Chrome extension, Craig. There were some issues there aren't there. Craig Yeah, absolutely. Now I've got some tutorials coming out starting next week, and about some extensions that you might want to use, and they will improve your browsing experience will improve your security, etc. What I think they're talking about here is a problem, Danny, where 500 Chrome extensions, Google Chrome extensions, were identified as secretly uploading people's data, millions of times. These things get downloaded. It's incredible what's happened, more than 1.7 million installations. So again, I still know people who are downloading browser bar extensions for Google Chrome for all of their different browsers, right. And it's a little browser bar extension that gives you a feature to search quickly or watch the stock market, etc. Those are the evilest things and prone to guys. Don't install, never install these little browser extensions that are just going to show you one or two things, because so many of them are sketchy. Many are fraudulent. Some of them are advertising as a service. Some of them will automatically, just from your browser, be clicking on ads on other websites you are not even visiting. Yes, they can click on an advertisement on a site you're not visiting just to increase their revenue. The estimate is that 40 to 60% of all paid advertising Non the internet pay per click advertising 20 60% of that is fraudulent. It's these. Yeah, these extensions, Danny, that we're installing that is supposedly giving us some sort of advantage or some neat little thing. Don't install those. Make sure if you're on my email list, you'll find out about this next week. But make sure you are on that list, which is just a Craig Peterson dot com. You can attend these tutorials for free. I'm not selling anything, right. It's all about the extensions that are going to make you safe. Not these 500 identified as making you less safe. You know what, Danny, some of them are even doing Bitcoin mining using your computer and slowing down your computer. They're making your browsing experience horrible because it's so slow. Things are happening in the background that you don't know are being done. They're using your electricity. We have some of the highest electric rates in the nation here in the northeast. And it's all for their benefit and gain and nothing for you. I'm glad you brought it up. Danny, don't install an extension unless you have to. It's kind of like the app thing. Danny Yeah, we try to keep yourself as safe as possible. But something you have to do is make sure it's something that isn't going to come and backfire on you ultimately. Because we are talking with our tech expert Craig Peterson. Craig, we only have a few minutes left. But the one story I did want to get into here, the mobile voting app. Who would have thought this is ever a good idea? Craig heard off and on about what's going to happen Saturday in Nevada with their caucuses. They paid I think it was $60,000 to the same company that completely messed up the Iowa caucuses and they're saying yeah, we're going to do it. No, we're not going to do it. You're going to do it with the latest I heard yesterday was there not going to do it again. But there is an app called a vote to VOA t z. And this is something that supposedly allows you to vote from home vote from overseas. They've been trying to sell this to the military, for our military personnel stationed overseas. And this is crazy. The election is promoting its use of blockchain technology, which is like a vast buzzword nowadays. And people associate blockchain technology with absolutely safe, nothing could go wrong. They ignore the man behind the curtain. It is not secure. There are four states right now that are still planning on using this votes app that is being used in West Virginia. And it has some of the most basic security flaws in it. It allows other people to Steve votes intercept votes change votes, as they're being transmitted from the mobile phones to the company's voting server. If you can This is absolutely crazy. MIT put together a research paper that was released last Thursday. We're not there yet. Don't use these things. You know, the only thing that's really safe is a pencil or maybe a felt tip pen. Because you can't hack, a felt tip pen and a piece of paper. Right, much harder to do, obviously, this imbalance studying before, but you can do it on a wholesale basis like you can with some of these voting apps. Danny Yeah, what's this one right here? Just say someone to be able just to change votes like that. It seems as though the security and some of the features and noted have a voting type app. They have far away from Craig. Craig Oh, yeah, end up partner of Homeland Security's warning against it New York Times, even covered on it. They were the first ones to report this research out of MIT. We're going to see a lot of problems of voting over the next few cycles, maybe ten plus years, frankly, as you know, You know, the idiocy tends to tie down in the money, right? Who owns the company, for instance, with the backhoe debacle that happened overnight Iowa, the disaster that was going to happen this weekend in Nevada and still may have been that company that made that software to tally the votes was owned and operated by Hillary Clinton staffers. Okay. So, yeah, accurately. And now the democratic Democratic Party says, Oh, it's great. We know you, Hey, buddy. Yeah, we're going to do it for you, right? Until we can get rid of this phony crony capitalism stuff, which exists all over the place, and we make real decisions. This voting stuff just isn't going to work. Right. And you know, Danny, I hold a zero trust. The government's going to be able to get this right. But you know, another five to 10 years, I think, maybe we will have a reasonably smooth roll road ahead of us. There's a $10 million funding project that came out of the Department of Defense to make an unhackable voting system. So I got my fingers crossed because I know these guys are on the right track. Danny Well, I'm sure when they come up with something, you'll have a forest Craig Craig is always some great stuff, unfortunately, to get to everything. If somebody wants to hear more, how do they do so? Craig Well, you can go to Craig Peterson, dot com or they can text Danny, to me at 855-385-5553. That's 855-385-5553. Danny As always, data rates do apply. Craig, thank you so much for the time. We'll talk to you next week. Craig Take care, Danny, bye-bye. Danny It's Craig, always with some great stuff can be scary. But Craig gets us through it. As he said, watch out for your extensions. Watch out for the app to clean up the apps, and yeah, what's the make you think that Hillary Clinton can get a voting app? Right? But yeah, our servers were secured in New York. Yeah, okay. Everyone believes that one. Anyways, I'll take one last time out. Well. Craig We've been working on this now for six weeks, eight weeks, we've got some fantastic free tutorials coming up. Frankly, these are going to improve your security posture. By what at least 90%. I'm serious about that when you are online, so it's going to help with security transformation plus a course and everything else. We shouldn't lie to the federal government we shouldn't lie to anybody, right? It's not what we were taught as kids. While a very interesting article from Mashable, I'll put it up on my screen for those people who are watching it on on replay or live here. But business email compromise and tax up by to 69%. We know that already. Right? What is one of the ways business email compromise attacks work? Well, they work by finding out information about you. So what better way to find out information about you then if they have compromised your account at some website? And they got answer to those questions that are for account recovery? What better way for the bad guys to be able to scam you? Now we're all using various types of password recovery me I use something on my iPhone, and it's called duo. I don't know if you've heard of this before. This is what we use for our customers. So what will happen is, I want to log into a website, it asks me for my username, my password, Vinod asks me to under my one time password. Now that's an interesting one, because what's the word time password? Well, that's what do Oh, and some of these others that are out there will give you. And that's why we've got so much information on passwords day, that 10 page, special report that you can grab by going to Craig Peterson calm, and sign up on the homepage, you'll get that password special report. Make sure By the way, I noticed quite a few people had forgotten to click on the confirmation email, because I don't want to spam anybody. And sometimes people sign up a million of the closest friends for newsletters just to annoy them. So I need you, once you've signed up to go to your email box right away, and click on that email link so that I can confirm it really is you. It's not somebody else trying to punk you as it were. So if you go to Craig Peterson calm you sign up, I'm going to give you this 10 page special piece of really password knowledge, right? I don't even know what to call it. We call it a special report around here. But it's going to give you a lot of good stuff. So what we're talking about right now, though, is password recovery. Now, if you are using one of these types of apps like duo that allow you to, to do these types of secure logins, there's others, there's like Google Authenticator, which is free, but does not provide all of the stuff you need as a real business, right? Where you have the groups of people, and it's tied into your Active Directory server, so that when people's email addresses change, it all changes, right? So Google Authenticator doesn't have that most of the others don't have that Microsoft has their own authenticator, of course, because they're Microsoft. And, and so it's all good stuff. But Craig Peterson, calm, make sure you sign up, you'll get that. So what this article from Mashable is talking about is why you should lie on your password recovery questions. Now, I do that all the time. All the time. And the idea behind the line, I think is is a little confusing to people, because we're not talking about out now lies. What we're talking about is when it asks you, What school did you go to? Don't tell it what school you went to. But I can hear you saying right now, Craig? Craig, how am I supposed to remember it if I'm lying about everything all the time, because my mother always told me, if you don't lie, you're never going to get caught up in a lie. And you don't have to remember everything that you told everybody. And the same thing is true here. Right? That does not make sense. That if you are lying on the application for every website, you're going to how are you going to remember all of us? Well, that's where the password managers come in again. So what I do is, when when I am signing up, and it asks me, what high school did you go to? Is that going to my password manager now I personally use one password. I love it. I love the group ability in it. We have to for my family, we have different teams at work. We have teams, for instance, that that have to have bars compliant, or I tars compliant, where they make stuff for the military, there's subcontractor, we have all kinds of these types of people. So how do we have that? What do we do? Well, obviously, we don't want people that don't need access, to have access to passwords, these passwords, right? It's a whole concept of limited access, minimal access, minimal privileges. And that's what I love about one password. So it's great for that last pass is another one, they have a free version that works pretty darn well. And they do have some group features, something you're going to have to decide. But open the notes section in one password. And right there in the notes. I can tell it, hey, I want to remember this fake pass this fake school I went to, etc. So I'm going to in fact, I'm going to do this right now if you're watching on the replay or you're watching live, I'm going to go back to this Mashable article. Because they've got a screen capture, I don't want to show you my my screen capture of my real one password, right? Because that would be giving away stuff that I don't really want to give away. So this is a note. And one password has the ability to do notes as well as last excuse me as last pass. And you can see here in the note it same bank account recovery question one where did you go to high school? bank account recovery answer one. So this is just stuff they've typed in. And it's got completely lately random characters about it looks like he did a palm smash on the keyboard almost. And it remembers it. And it'll remember all of your passwords this way. Well, your account recovery questions, as well as your passwords. I like the way one password does it better than I like the way it's been done here in last pass, but they are absolutely phenomenal. And there are many, many, many of these types of pieces of software out there password managers. And that's why I you know, I put together the password manager special report at Craig Peterson calm if you haven't got it already, make sure you sign up. So that's that you're looking at it right now. So that's what I try and take care of, and I that's how I do it, okay, I don't give the bank my real information. And don't feel bad about it, right? You're not trying to defraud the bank, you are trying to defraud the criminals that might steal the information from the bank, the mind, try and do it for a spear phishing attack that they can use for business email compromise. Now, it sounds really complicated, and in many ways that it can be. But it's simple if you're using a password manager. And that's the whole point here. That's what I want you guys to do. And that's going to help a lot in the future, because your accounts probably already been compromised. So you're going to go in the first thing with a password manager and create new passwords, you're going to use the one time password function that is in one password, or maybe the Google Authenticator one, you're going to tie it all together so that you can keep safe, you should be using a unique password for every single website you're on. And new recovery questions for every single website you're on. Because when one platform gets hacked, or what they end up doing is something called password stuffing. And they see all okay, well, we've got this password from the Reddit account. And they're going to try that password now on on Bank of America and you name it out there and see if that password works. So different passwords. Remember Google, Gmail, Twitter, Reddit, Spotify, Netflix, YouTube, everything. And that way they can't leverage and attack and this is the article talks about that includes Dunkin Donuts, right? You don't want the same type of passwords and recovery for Dunkin Donuts as you have for your bank account. So make sure you use unique passwords is kind of theme for today. And that's why we've put it up online at Craig Peterson calm. When you sign up. You're going to get that password special report and follow it we've got some step by step stuff in there. And we'll be right back. Stick around. Transcribed by https://otter.ai --- More stories and tech updates at: www.craigpeterson.com Don't miss an episode from Craig. Airing date: 05/20/2019 Ring Doorbells Can Save Lives - Microsoft Monster Security Bug - Amazon Expanding Freight Craig Peterson 0:00 Hey, good morning everybody. My computer died, you're not gonna believe this. Wow. Also was on with Jack Heath this morning Microsoft had big monster security bug, computer bug, Jeff Bezos, we talked about a little bit this morning. And these Ring doorbells and others are they something you should use? Yeah, my computer, I have a Mac Pro that I've had the, you know, 2013 was the last time they really updated this thing. And mine's been just giving me nothing but problems lately. And you know, yeah, I went through all the normal stuff you try and reinstall, you reset the computer, you go back to default, you do all of the things you're trying to really see if maybe something else is going on because it's just kind of wacky and slow. So I decided i'd order another CPU this would be an upgraded one. So 12 core CPU, which is really kind of cool. And just upgraded I get about 50% boost because it's an eight core right now. So we took it all apart. Then you know we have all the tools to do it and the static control, stuff you need and everything. And we opened it up and right up, man I couldn't believe this, that the top of the chip of the main processor, of course it's right on a heatsink and it very cool heatsink. If you've never seen a Mac Pro, you gotta check this thing out. It kind of looks like a little trash can. But they did an amazing job with the cooling on this. So right at the top in the center. It is melted. Yeah, the copper from the heatsink is melted right onto the chip and the heatsink itself has a hole in it. It is absolutely astounding. I have not seen this sort of thing in decades, frankly, because Intel chips are pretty good about, at least it used to be, about slowing themselves down if they were overheating. They're not supposed to melt copper. And it was just absolutely amazing. So I took it down to the Apple Store. It's out of warranty right now. And hasn't been for probably a couple of years. And we took it down and told them about it first, called the business team at the store, they're always really helpful down there. And they set up an appointment for us. We brought it down, they had to look at it and they they had never seen anything like this before. And to me it's an obvious manufacturing problem. There was probably a contaminant in that goop that you put in the thermal heatsink goop between the CPU and the the basically the cooler, let's call it that, okay, the heatsink. And what probably happened is that's probably where the hole in the heatsink came from, is it did not have really good thermal coupling, and ended up melting. And of course subtle cause all kinds of weird ass problems with the computer. And that's probably what I've been experiencing now for a few years. So it was really kind of an eye opener. And now they're gonna charge me I found a new heatsinks for this computer. And remember, this is kind of a fancy computer. So the heatasinks I found were $400 for a new one online and refurbished on eBay bathes 120 bucks, which isn't too bad. So we were thinking about doing that before we took it down. But Apple said that if it would be 250 bucks, and they would do reattach the GPUs and get the CPU all set up properly. Now that's a really good deal, frankly, because whoever touches it last owns it right? So I didn't I would have had to have removed the GPUs these are the graphic processing units. Mine had two high end GPUs in it. Or I guess it does have right? Now past tense. And so they'll have to remove those, clean those off, put mount them properly with the right heatsink material on to that new heatsink. And I'm going to put them, I'm going to give them that brand new CPU and put it in the machine and then they will mount that up as well and then put the whole machine back together. So I should have a machine that's good for me for the next few years again, so knock on wood. I don't know how long it's going to take Apple to come up with the new Mac Pro. There's been some kind of artists renderings of what people would love to see. We really don't know what Apple's going to do yet. There's supposed to have been one last year now they're supposed to be one this year. Their rumors are in fact there's even a statement from Apple that'll probably be next year. But you know for now, if you need a real high end Mac get the iMac pro which is really a nice machine. But anyhow, so that's been my little, what do you want to call this journey over the last week? Very interesting to me anyways, okay, so here we go. Let's get into this morning's conversation with Mr. Jack Heath. Jack Heath 5:12 In terms of our on demand podcast, but joining us now on the Auto Fair listener lines, our regular contributor our Tech Talk guy Craig Peterson on this Monday morning. Good morning Craig Craig 5:21 Hey good morning. Boy this has been a busy week in tech everything from Jeff Bezos going and building his own airport starting last week, all the way through huge security problems this last week as well. Jack 5:36 You know, I'm going to come back to Bezos and Amazon but real quick, you know, this Fort Worth kidnapping story this morning. Michael Webb suspect extensive criminal history. That's a good thing but kidnapping an eight year old girl who was walking with her mother, you know, extensive criminal history of the suspect. But you know Craig these doorbell videos? Are you a fan of these? These? These of the right on the this? I don't know the company but you know the video right and right in your front door? Craig 6:02 Yeah, there's a few of those out there. And the biggest one right now has had major security problems. Turns out all of the videos that have ever been recorded, were available on the internet for anyone within the organization to watch it anytime. But yeah, there was more and more of that. And I think it's kind of good. Frankly. Jack 6:22 I was gonna ask you if you're a fan of them. Yeah. Because in this case, apparently, all these things sort of helped put the pieces together to get the suspect or at least figure out what happened. Craig 6:32 Yeah, well, these Ring doorbells are probably the ones you're thinking of, they're very common out there. And their video doorbells, you can get different models anywhere from 100 to $200. Some of them get even a little more expensive. And the whole idea behind them is they have a built in video camera, they also have a motion detector. So that when someone comes up to your door, you know that there's somebody there, or maybe they're dropping off a package rather than doing something else. Some of them record all of the time. And there's even a feature on it, so that you can link your doorbell in with other people in your neighborhood, so that you can kind of track things. So if something like this does happen, whether it's someone who's grabbing packages from the porch, a porch pirate, you know, packages that don't belong to them, or heaven forbid something like this kidnapping, you can look at other people in your neighborhoods videos as well to try and figure out what might have happened. Jack 7:30 Alright, so getting back to Mr. Bezos, is it just me and who am I to say this, but you know, it just seems that some of these, I don't maybe they get bored running their own company. But you know, when you have Amazon, and it's, you know, the robotics and the you know, the way they're marketing, you know, what you say is like doing his own airport wants to do this or go to the moon, you know, or fly to Mars, what, at some point do the is that? Is that problematic for the company's future or not? I mean, that's speculation. It's a speculative question. Craig 8:00 Well, look at what's happening right now in New Hampshire with Amazon. We have now same day delivery in much of New Hampshire, certainly in the southern tier for some of the Amazon products. That's getting to the point where it will be same day delivery. So what Amazon needs is a way to deliver to our homes quickly and inexpensively. So they've already cut a lot of the contracts with the major carriers out there. They have a setup right now, where they are paying people who are working for Amazon currently, to go and start a delivery company for Amazon, you have all these individual contractors, so they're trying to keep costs under control. And now what they're doing is they're building right outside Cincinnati, a 3 million square foot airport. This thing's going to have a parking garage on this airport for 100 cargo jets. So the FedEx and UPS and these other companies that have been hauling for Amazon are no longer going to be hauling. Amazon is going to keep getting more and more of the costs under control. And we're going to end up with a two hour delivery which is already available from Amazon's Whole Foods division, you know the grocery store so you can in much again of New Hampshire, you can order something online, a food product and have it delivered within two hours. So that's what he's aiming at. These drone deliveries have not been working out too well yet. They're still really a few years away before it really starts happening. So you entering your question. Yeah, they are looking at a company like Amazon, they are trying to increase the deliverability of the goods, decrease the time, decrease the cost. But you have companies like Facebook, that are now into robotics are building new robots and tying them into AI and doing all kinds of weird things. At least Bezos seems to be sticking with selling and delivering. Jack 10:04 Far being from me to question him and the guy's been you know, seemingly brilliant and even survived his they say an expensive divorce. All right Craig, what else, before we let you go, a Tech Talk tip. Craig 10:16 Oh, this is an absolutely huge one, we found out Intel really messed up again. And pretty much any computer made since 2011, that uses Intel chips is vulnerable to this new, nasty nasty one of the worst hack, hackability problems out there. So Microsoft has 17 critical patches this month, including some patches that will fix some of these Intel problems. But in order to be completely secure here, Jack, you're going to lose 40% of your performance on your Intel chips. And this is something that is driving Apple leaving further away from Intel. So expect in within the next year or so to see Apple Computers probably switching away from Intel in maybe even entirely. Jack 11:05 Alright Craig, I appreciate all the Tech Talk. Thank you very much on this Monday morning and you have a great Memorial Day. Craig 11:11 Take care. You too, Jack. Craig 11:18 By the way, everybody this week's kind of a busy week, we are repositioning our websites looks like we're going to change the email provider and stuff. So things might be a little iffy here over the next few weeks. So you know, keep that in mind. Right? I might not be as regular a podcaster as I have been, or email or website updates, but we'll see how this all ends up going. So anyways, have a great week as we prepare for some amazing things that are coming your way we're going to have some little mini courses and other things to we're going to make available to people anyways. Have a great day and week I should be back tomorrow. We'll see. We'll see how things go. Hopefully I don't have another computer, bite the big one on me. Airing date: 04/24/2019 Samsung Fold Problem - How Much Your Tax Info Sells For - Matt's Bad Amazon Headphones Craig Peterson 0:00 Hey, everybody, we talked this morning about the Samsung fold problem, how much your tax and photos worth on the dark web and Matt bought some headphones online on Amazon based on the star ratings. And guess what? They aren't so good. So we talked about that as well. So here we go Craig Peterson with Ken and Matt in Maine, this morning. Matt Gagnon0:26 WGAN Wednesday morning, that time and that day means Craig Peterson, man about town and tech guru joins us as he does now. What's going on, Craig? Craig 0:37 Hey, good morning. Caribou still has snow on the ground. But that's a shocker. Ken Altshuler 0:45 Which is why we should annex it to Canada. It doesn't belong in America, get rid of it. So I didn't see this on your, we're not going, I'm sure you've talked about the Samson folding tablet fiasco. And since I love to talk about how Samsung sucks. Any comment on Samsung? Craig 1:09 You summed it up there in one word. Ken 1:11 Well, thank you for joining us. Matt 1:16 Oh, you fanboys. Ken 1:17 I haven't had that with my iPhone, Matt. Matt 1:19 At least they're trying to develop something new. Craig 1:22 It's a problem. And of course, we're talking about these folding things. With the Galaxy Fold. The screens are breaking and people are kind of getting upset. But it's a cool new technology. Matt's right for once, Ken. You know. Ken 1:37 Matt's never right. Ever. Craig 1:40 Ever? Oh, come on. I was trying to give you one Matt. So here's a problem. It's, how do I even explain this? Okay, here we go. I've got one Matt. The Apple MacBook Pro has a similar problem. And that is that when you're bending these things, sometimes those cables are, and the conductors are extremely, extremely small. And when you bend them a lot, of course you get mechanical breakdowns and that's what's happening right now with the galaxy fold and with the MacBook Pro, in fact, both companies are scrambling Apple's scrambling to get a new MacBook Pro out this September. And it looks like they're kind of pushing it up a little sooner than they had wanted to. Because of the two big problems with the MacBook Pro. One is the keyboard is still an issue for a lot of people. I just I don't like the feel of it. I don't. Ken, you like the feel your MacBook Pro keyboard right? Ken 2:42 I do. Well, I kind of like the raised a little better. I've got a use of this. But that when I was raised lettering, I liked it a little better. Craig 2:52 Yeah, I'd like to the old one little bit better. And then there's some problems with the cables in the screen there. And then the Galaxy Fold from Samsung is incredibly new technology. No one's really tried to do this quite this way before. And so it's it's kind of falling on its face. But also Samsung doesn't have the profit margin Apple does to invest in some of this stuff. So it's impressive what they did. But I'm not sure it'll ever be, well ever is a long time. Right. But anytime soon? Matt 3:22 I don't know, I guess I don't understand. And I'm a Samsung aficionado, if you will. So I don't get why you'd want it. I don't want to fold my phone. Is it just because you want to get a bigger screen? I guess. And so you can fold it that way? I don't care that much. Yeah, I mean, where is the demand for this? That I mean, I want to have a tablet, but I wanted the size of a phone. I really don't a tablet the size of my phone. Craig 3:47 Well, it's the phablet thing, right? But let's go back again to Apple as an example, Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs. Henry Ford, let's go way back to Henry Ford. He said if we had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses. And Steve Jobs said of you know, we came up with the with the iPod and then the iPhone. And it, nobody was asking for it. And then when they came up with these bigger ones, like the one I have sitting right in front of me right now, they came up with a bigger screens and displays people were not asking for that either. And yet, in all of those cases, they became very, very popular. So as a business person, I've got to say, you, you have to what's the word cannibalize your own business, even if you have a business model and your business is doing well, if you don't compete against yourself with some new innovations, someone else is going to compete against yourself with that same innovation that you didn't bother doing. So I've got to in this case, praise Samsung for trying it. And I also agree with both you guys, I don't really want one that big. I have an iPad, if I need it, you know something that's bigger, but you know, having it in my pocket is going to be is going to be problematic. So I think that's why. So good, good on them for trying something new. But they definitely did not pull it off. Matt 5:10 Talking to Craig Peterson our tech guru joins us at this time, every Wednesday to go over the world of technology. Craig, when I buy stuff on Amazon, I admit that I am one of the people that will you know, take like three different I actually, here's a good example, I just bought some wireless headphones, so that I could go running and not have the stupid wires in my face all the time. When I did that, I found like four or five different ones on Amazon and I checked out the reviews to see what people thought of them. And I, I will say I gave a couple extra points to the one that had better reviews. And I ended up buying it and I'm not terribly happy with it. Was I taken was was that were there a lot of phony reviews that are on these Amazon items and has this become a problem? Craig 5:53 Well, that's a really good point because there's an article I have up on my site this week. It's from The Hustle. But this one particular was headphones, his iPhone plug it has that little iPhone connector on it. And it was ranked five stars, almost it had almost 4000 5-star reviews. And yet when the guy order did, that connector came right off broke off for like almost the first time right in his iPhone when he was trying to use it. And it's it is a real problem in something that we've kind of known about for a while. But the reason that's happening I think is very interesting. We used to have a, we still do, a lot of people here in the US who are buying stuff in China or from someplace else. They're shipping it over here. And then they are selling it on Amazon, they're reselling. And what's been happening over the last two to three years is these Chinese companies that are making these things have figured out, well, maybe we can get rid of that middleman. And so they've been shipping directly to Amazon. We're not going to get into all of the details here of how that all works. But they ship their stuff over and then they sell it. So there are some things that are going on that are kind of bad. You know, there's 82% of Americans, both all probably all three of us, right? Who checked the reviews, who checked the stars in it. But it turns out that there are sellers in China, who are paying people here in the US, they have secret Facebook groups, they have all closed Facebook groups, and they have other ways of communicating. And they will have you buy their product, they'll reimburse you for having bought it from Amazon. And then they'll give you an extra 10 bucks if you give it a five star review online. And so this guy got into this, he started poking around, he was invited to be a reviewer of this nice little iPhone charger cable. And he found out that there is a big underbelly here there's a site you might want to check out called Fakespot, F-A-K-E-S-P-O-T. And people are looking at these five star reviews and Fakespot had a look at these. And found that in fact, there there there is star inflation going on. And they use some interesting ways to try and figure it out. But kind of on average, it's about a half a star inflation on some of these products. And when maybe as many as 30% of all of these reviews online are fake. And that is a real problem, Matt. Matt 8:46 So I have this to blame for my wireless headphones not working the way that I want them to. Excellent. Craig 8:50 It might be. Matt 8:53 I really just want to blame someone, Craig. So I'm gonna go ahead and pick this and call it good. Craig 8:57 Call it good. When you get right down to it, read the reviews and see if they're all the same. I found reviews, I did a search online about this that said I haven't tried this product but and do a search for that. Go to Google and tell it to search Amazon for I haven't tried this product. And you will find reviews where people are giving a five star review and saying I haven't tried this product. So look for those, when you're looking at a product and then also look for people saying almost the exact same thing over and over again. And for me something that spooks me badly is very poor English. And that means that they aren't you know, they aren't people who can speak English well. So maybe they're legit. Maybe they're great people. But I get a little nervous about it. Ken 9:53 We are down with Craig Peterson. He's our tech guru. Matt 9:58 Peterson. Ken 9:59 Exactly what I said. He joins us, everyone Wednesday at 7:38. Sorry for the cough. Matt 10:06 We're now at 7:48. 10 minutes into the segment. Ken 10:09 I didn't. I know, but he joins us at 7:38. Matt 10:11 I'm just saying. Ken 10:12 I didn't know the dark web, I know dark web deals with a lot of bad, you know, kiddie porn, but I didn't know it looked at my taxes. Matt 10:23 Are you saying that you can Donald Trump's taxes on the dark web? Ken 10:26 Yeah. Can we go down and find out? Craig 10:29 You will if the congressional committee catch all of them. Here's what's going on, I want to give everyone a quick piece of advice here. And that is if you have filed an extension for your taxes, file them as soon as you possibly can. Because what's happening is the bad guys are doing a couple of things. We already know they've got your passwords, we already know they've got your accounts. And we already know that most Americans are still using one of 10 passwords, people. And because of that what they've done now is the bad guys are hijacking People's Bank Accounts unbeknownst to them. So you can still use your bank account, but the bad guys have access to it. And then they are filing fake tax returns. And they're filing those big tax returns. And then they're pulling the money, all of it, including your tax return out of your bank account. And so that's how they get the guys you say well, I don't get much money. Yeah, but you're looking forward to that $500 tax refund. Well so are the bad guys. And they are paying online, anywhere from $1 for up to $52 for W-2s, 1040s, your name, your social security number and your birthdate is worth as little as 19 cents on the dark web. But just think of that. It can take you 300 hours to recover your credit and name and it's only worth 19 cents. And you can if you want to become a bad guy, you can get a how to guide to cash in on a victim's tax return for only $70 on the dark web. So it's our money, our identity isn't worth much. But if it's worth more than 17 cents to you, maybe you should change your passwords and use a password manager like 1Password or Lastpass online because man this is a real problem. And the best way to deal with this particular the taxes is to file your return early before the bad guys file one on your behalf. --- More stories and tech updates at: www.craigpeterson.com Don't miss an episode from Craig. He also wants to know if there is something better/safer than steroids to take for erythema nodosum. ~ In my response to Craig, I recommend the dynamic stretching routine. I also mention the GAPS diet book. Audio Question from Tony: This summer Tony is going after an unsupported speed record on a long trail (272 miles). He is looking for light/portable food recommendations and also an approximate amount of calories he will need for 40 miles per day over 6+ days. He is 5'6" 135lbs. ~ In my response to Tony, I mentioned LivingFuel SuperGreens, CapraCleanse and Tian Chi. Audio Question from Frances: Frances wants to know if there is a connection between hormones, acne and exercise. Amy asks: Can you comment on this study regarding fasted exercise and weight loss: "Exercising fasting or fed to enhance fat loss? Influence of food intake on respiratory ratio and excess postexercise oxygen consumption after a bout of endurance training." Keely wrote: Ben recently posted a link entitled "carbs are killing you". This was pretty interesting and I am curious if you know where any of the information on this handout is coming from. The archive information only gives information about the website design. Is there any scientific evidence behind this, especially steps 1-8? Here is a copy of that link to make things easier. Maria asks: I recently purchased your Low Carbohydrate Diet for Triathletes book and I have a question about transitioning my diet. I'm a Crossfitter with a history of blood sugar crashes and bonking, so I'm quite apprehensive about doing a WOD during the first couple weeks of the diet. Do you recommend cutting my carbs gradually, going low intensity on my workouts for a couple of weeks while my body adapts, or just going all out and seeing what happens? Bruce asks: Hey Ben and Brock, what do you guys make of this article about popcorn having "more of the healthful antioxidant substances called polyphenols than fruits and vegetables"? Ralph asks: Mayo Clinic Health Letter, 3/2012, Risk of vitamin supplements: ...analysis of latest research, the Iowa Women's Health Study (38,000 women 55 & older for 20 yrs), "...indicated that the risk of premature death increased 3.6 percent in those taking magnesium,..." (www.HealthLetter.MayoClinic.com) I don't know the protocol of the study, not my area of expertise, so I thought I'd ask for your thoughts. Osa asks:What supplement would you recommend for reducing belly fat? Saffslim is the new belly fat supplement that I am using that has gained a lot of traction since it appeared on the Dr OZ show and Montel Williams raved about it. What do you think about it? Are there better supplements on the market for specifically reducing belly fat? I know your not mainstream like Dr OZ but if you could recommend one or more supplements specifically addressing belly fat, what would it be? Maybe once you open your mouth it will sell like hotcakes all over the United States like every supplement Dr. OZ recommends on his show.
