Kevin and Peter sit down with Robby Chaney, who describes himself as a runner, hiker, and death marcher, and who has spent more time chasing cutoffs than almost anyone in the sport.Robby's first trail race was a 40K in 2018 that went so badly he wrote off trail running entirely. New shoes he'd never worn, a vest he'd never used, and temperatures over 100 degrees. Then a volunteer request for a race called Cocodona 250 landed in his inbox, and the number stuck in his head. Six years later he has four 200-mile finishes, a starring role in a film about the very thing he's spent his career outrunning, and a 2026 Grand Slam on the calendar. We get into what the back of the pack actually looks like from the inside: 100-plus hour races, aid stations where you turn around and walk straight back out, and the compounding physical, mental, and emotional cost of days on course. Robby also walks us through his 2025 Cocodona, where he made it to roughly mile 220 before his lungs quit on him in Walnut Canyon. Pulse ox in the low 80s, an IV, and a search and rescue extraction. (Peter, who also got to mile 220 and didn't finish, offers a competing explanation for his own DNF: he got tired.)The conversation closes somewhere we didn't expect. In 2002, Robby was stabbed by a stranger and left bleeding on the street. He woke up in the ICU and was told he'd probably never walk again. He used a cane for years. He turned 50 last month and is signed up for close to a thousand miles of racing. In this episode:(01:15) Aspirational ultrarunner: what "death march" actually means(02:26) What people get wrong about the back of the pack(05:41) From a miserable 40K to signing up for a 250(08:25) Coldwater Rumble 2024 and learning what a cutoff is mid-race(11:04) Respecting the cutoff without fearing it(13:37) DNFs as data points, and the trekking poles that cost him Mogollon Monster(16:27) Getting the email from Dylan and Emily, mid-race, on a ridgeline(19:40) What happened in Walnut Canyon(23:37) 2002, the ICU, and the twenty-year road backThe Cutoff is out from Aravaipa. Marathons turned into a 50-states goal, the pandemic turned that into her first 50-miler, and the company she kept did the rest. She talks about finding out mid-race that she'd be in a film (filmmaker Bradford caught her hugging her crew at the start and tracked her down at Crown King), and about only learning last week — from our episode with Jamil and Dylan — that the movie was really about the cutoff all along. Her first reaction was ego. Her second was admiration for how the crew handled it.We get into her 2025 Cocodona 250: roughly five hours of sleep across the whole race, no real dirt nap until past mile 200, hallucinations, a full head-to-toe clothing change in the downpour before Fain Ranch, and snow on Mingus that felt like home. (She did not bring rain pants. Who brings rain pants to the desert?)Jen also breaks down the Skydive Ultra — where the skydive itself counts against your cutoff — and previews her next big swing: the Iditarod Trail Invitational 150, starting days after this recording, with a kid's sled her nieces and nephew decorated and her grandmother sewed the zipper into.At 51, with a regular job and a regular life, her message is simple: if she can do it, so can a lot of other people. In this episode:Accidental ultrarunner: from mountaineering to a rainy-day half marathonAlaska running, sled pulling, and the Susitna 100The Skydive Ultra 100 — bacon, hallucinations, and losing two hours to the jumpGetting recruited into The Cutoff at mile 37The "observer effect" of running with a camera on youSleep deprivation, weather, and why the 2025 Cocodona was the hardest year yetWhy crew and pacers made the finish possibleEscalation, "normalizing Norman" friends, and what's actually being chasedWhat Jen hopes people take away from the film about the back of the pack

The debate about cutting off family members.
PSYCHO-THERAPISTS WANT YOUR KIDS TO CUT YOU OFF This week we walk through a culture that keeps handing the most intimate parts of life to somebody else. We start with the "CEO parents" spending a quarter million a year on nannies, chefs, and potty-training consultants so they never have to clip a toenail, then jump to the Big Law partner whose ten-second park-bench kiss with a younger associate cost him tens of millions after a stranger's phone did the rest. We dig into the therapists coaching grown adults to go no-contact with their parents and the researchers calling it a family-wrecking racket, we meet the burned-out singles letting a spreadsheet decide whether their date went well, and then we clear the palate with an Australian mom who beat one-in-fifteen-million odds to deliver healthy identical quadruplets. We close in our own backyard, where the Bloodstained Men brought their anti-circumcision protest to a Jefferson City street corner, and we lay out the whole fight — consent, medicine, religious liberty, and where persuasion ends and the state has no business going.

Life is an adventure of choices and consequences.Choices and consequences.I believe that with all my heart. But I do not believe that wise choices will always yield the outcome you desired. The Book of Ecclesiastes is filled with the wisdom and insights of Solomon, who had this to say in chapter nine;“I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of skill; but Time and Chance happens to them all.”I agree with what Solomon wrote, so I dare not say that a wise choice will always produce the desired outcome. But I will say that in the absence of unlucky timing and plain old bad luck, good Choices usually lead to good Consequences.Vi Wickam, one of my Wizard of Ads partners, wrote 140 words last week that knocked my socks off.I am typing these words to you on a computer that sits on top of my desk. Below that desk are my bare feet.My socks are nowhere to be found. These are the 140 words that Vi Wickam wrote for American Business Secrets.Make a Decision. Many people talk about decisions, but few people understand what it really isto make a decision. Not every choice is a decision.Decide comes from the Latin words “de” – meaning OFF – and “caedere”, meaning to CUT.To decide is to Cut Off the other possibilities.Few things are as powerful as a true decision. To decide is to move in a direction and to cut off the others. To decide is to keep your focus, and to not look back.To decide is to face your fear of loss.Every decision comes with loss, and you must face it.When you face that fear, you will feel relief. You will breathe easier. To decide is to stop second guessing yourself. To decide is to move forward with clear vision, and clear purpose.Make a decision today. With American Business Secrets, I'm Vi Wickam.Do you often have to explain, justify, and defend your decisions?Me, too. These are the 3 key sentences in Vi's 140-word essay that jerked my eyes open and blew my socks away:Not every choice is a decision. To Decide is to Cut Off the other possibilities.Every decision comes with loss, and you must face it.Some people believe that if you delay long enough, a solution will arise that causes no discomfort, no inconvenience, and no awkward moments. You will find these people waiting for their luck to turn, waiting for their ship to come in, waiting for their big break, waiting to begin this long, awkward, funny, delightful and difficult Walk of Life.Roy H. They explore why these ruptures happen, how parents may unknowingly contribute to them, and how the gospel offers hope for healing and reconciliation. What happens when parents walk away from their own children? In this episode of Family Vision, Rob and Amy Rienow tackle a painful and increasingly common issue: parents who cut off relationships with their adult children. While much attention is often given to children who reject their parents, many families are also experiencing the heartbreak of parents withdrawing from their children and grandchildren. Drawing from their counseling ministry and personal conversations with families, Rob and Amy explore the warning signs that lead to relational breakdown, the dangers of unresolved bitterness and offense, and the biblical call to pursue forgiveness and reconciliation. They also discuss the proper role of boundaries and why healthy boundaries should always aim toward healing rather than permanent separation. If your family is experiencing strained relationships, this episode offers biblical encouragement, practical wisdom, and hope for restoration. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Something has shifted in the Nancy Guthrie investigation, and Sheriff Chris Nanos isn't pretending otherwise. He's confirmed he's no longer talking directly with Nancy's family — Savannah Guthrie, her siblings, none of them. Every family conversation now routes through the FBI.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer sits down with Tony Brueski to read this development the way only someone with 28 years inside the Bureau can. In a case that started with Sheriff Nanos texting and calling Nancy's daughter directly, the silence now coming from his office is its own kind of statement.Jennifer addresses the question nobody in the official statements wants to answer: who actually pulled the plug? Did the family stop responding to the sheriff? Did the sheriff voluntarily step back? Did the FBI gently push him out of the picture? Each scenario carries a very different implication for where this investigation actually stands. She also breaks down what these arrangements typically signal between local agencies and federal investigators — when they reflect a healthy hand-off, and when they reflect something more concerning. Sheriff Nanos has been operating under a documented cloud of criticism, sworn statement inconsistencies, and a unanimous no-confidence vote. This communication change doesn't exist in a vacuum. For the Guthrie family — still publicly cleared, still offering a $1 million reward, still doing the work of grieving without answers — losing direct access to the man running the investigation isn't a small thing. Jennifer talks about what it does to trust, what it does to cooperation, and whether there's any reason to believe Sheriff Nanos when he says the case is "getting closer."This is the read on what's actually happening that the press conferences are not giving you.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video?
