When many of us think about animal rescue, we think about abandoned pets looking for a new home. But Carol Mithers chronicles the work of one woman in Los Angeles who challenges us all to understand that animal and human suffering are connected. Mithers is writer whose work has appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post, L.A. Weekly, Smithsonian, O, the Oprah Magazine, Architectural Digest, Ladies' Home Journal, Glamour, The Nation, Los Angeles, Salon, The Daily Beast and many other outlets. Her Village Voice cover story, “My Life as a Man,” was syndicated internationally and made into an NBC movie of the week. Mithers is also the author of four books including “Mighty Be Our Powers,” written with Nobel Peace Prize laureate Leymah Gbowee. Her fourth book, “Rethinking Rescue: Dog Lady and the Story of America's Forgotten People and Pets,” tells the story of Lori Weise, known in Los Angeles as the Dog Lady, who's spent decades caring for people in poverty and the animals that love them. Carol Mithers talks about her book "Rethinking Rescue: Dog Lady and the Story of America's Forgotten People and Pets." The 'Dog Lady' referenced in the subtitle is Lori Weise, who for decades has done dog rescue in some of L.A.'s poorest neighborhoods. What has set her work apart from that of others engaged in pet rescue is that she has tried to help struggling dog owners as much as the dogs they own - and Weise's hope has always been that pets and owners might remain together or be reunited someday.
Los Angeles author Carol Mithers discusses her new book, "Rethinking Rescue," which explores a groundbreaking approach to animal welfare pioneered by Lori Weise, the founder of L.A.'s Downtown Dog Rescue. Known as the "Dog Lady," Weiss focuses on preventing pets from entering shelters by addressing the root causes of surrender, particularly in underserved communities. Mithers highlights the complex interplay between poverty, pet ownership, and animal welfare, challenging traditional rescue paradigms and emphasizing community support and education to keep pets with their loving owners.
Today's episode features two books that advocate for new approaches to big problems: urban planning, poverty, and dog rescue. First, Here & Now's Scott Tong speaks with Carlos Moreno about The 15-Minute City, his proposal for interconnected communities where schools, grocery stores and offices are all a short walk or bike ride away from each other. Then, Here & Now's Peter O'Dowd speaks with Carol Mithers about Rethinking Rescue, which profiles Lori Weise, aka the Dog Lady, and examines her belief that animal welfare and efforts to help people going through economic instability should go hand in hand.To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

You Found Her! In this intro episode, The Crazy Dog Lady explains her history with dogs and how her obsession started.
Toby's story is incredible, certainly unique, and ultimately super inspiring, as she embodies the importance of perspective and the ability to recreate your life no matter how badly it has fallen apart. At 46, Toby founded the Safe Harbor Prison Dog program at Lansing Correctional Facility in Kansas. Nearly two years later, Toby abandoned herself and her life after falling in love with a handsome younger man who was doing life for murder. Together, on the run after a sensational prison escape, their honeymoon ended with a crash at a hundred miles per hour, chased into a tree by a large ensemble of law enforcement. Toby's dive took her to the penal side of prison bars where she found the time and liberation to begin a transformation. A decade later, Toby has achieved two master's degrees, completed her memoir, acquired literary agency, and sold the movie rights to her story. Publication is expected soon. Her story has been covered by America's Most Wanted, the Wall Street Journal, Anderson Cooper, and more. Toby, better known as the Dog Lady of Lansing Prison, inspires women to break free. In this episode, we discuss: · How busyness affects our ability to gauge our true happiness. · How difficult it is to stand up for and do the things in life that we want to. · The importance of a having victor mindset over a victim mindset when bad things happen. · How rock bottom can be a lifechanging blessing. · The power of journaling to overcome guilt and shame. · Letting go of a love gone wrong. Brian used his powers for good this time, inviting our most intriguing guest to date to join us for a special 2 part episode. Toby Dorr started a prison dog rescue program at Lansing Prison in 2004 and the ride she went on after that will leave you breathless. Make sure to stick around next week for the exciting conclusion of her story.
Get ready for a wild ride. This week, we sat down with Toby Dorr, who made international headlines in 2006 when she helped an inmate escape from Lansing Federal Prison. Back then, her name was Toby Young, and she had what seemed like a normal life. She was married. She had two kids. She had a demanding corporate job. But the truth was that Toby felt isolated and unhappy. Following a layoff and a battle with cancer, Toby wanted to live a more meaningful life. So she created the Safe Harbor Prison Dog program, where she brought dogs in to be trained by inmates at the Lansing Correctional Facility. But while she was there, she fell in love with an inmate named John Manard. John was serving a life sentence for felony murder (https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/resources/felony-murder.htm) , due to his role in a fatal carjacking. Despite their differences, Toby felt a bond with John that she didn’t feel in her marriage. So on February 12, 2006, she helped John escape prison in a dog crate. Toby and John were on the run for 12 days before they were caught, thanks to a high speed chase. Toby was sentenced to 27 months in prison for her role in the escape. In the years since then, Toby has worked on herself. She doesn’t let the escape define her. She doesn’t downplay what she did, or shift the blame toward John. Instead, she tells her story in the hope that it will help other women. Let us be the first to tell you… if you’ve read a few headlines and thought, “how the hell could anyone do that?!?” Give this episode a listen. Toby’s story is worth hearing. If you’d like to learn more about Toby Dorr, check out her website at tobydorr.com. Be on the lookout for her forthcoming memoir, Unleashed.

Alison founded the nonprofit Isla Animals as a means of offering spay/neuter clinics, low-to-no cost veterinary services, owner education, and so much more to help the plight of these poor animals. Alison comes alive on the pages of The Dog Lady as Rose, whose dream of moving to a tropical island and working as a potter soon changes when she discovers her new island home is overrun with starving dogs and cats. That was 18 years ago, and in that time over 12,000 animals have been spayed or neutered, and thousands of neglected and starving dogs have been rescued off the streets. But Alison doesn't stop there; she finds new, loving homes for many of these dogs throughout the US, Mexico and Canada.
We are back in and ready to hit the streets with the dogs as we continue with the trend of remakes! This week we are tackling Disney's 2019 live action remake of Lady and the Tramp paired with New Belgian's Peach Kick. Much like the personality of Tramp this episode is sweet and sour. First Mike tells us about how BravoCon gave him serious FOMO he can't seem to shake. Then Harley asks the question, what is this I wrote? Both wonder why the dogcatcher in this film has no life? Can anyone tell us where and when this movie takes place?! So make yourself a plate of spaghetti and join us for this brand new episode. In this episode of The Woof Life Show the podcast for dog lovers, Lauren Farricker chats with Dawn Rudolph who is the dog mom and handler of Leader Dog Lady who won the 2019 Hero Guide Dog Award. Dawn Rudolph is legally blind and Leader Dog Lady is her guide dog. Dawn shares with The Woof Life show how much her world has changed so much since Lady came into her life. Leader Dogs are the eyes to support their handler and are trained like a Secret Service Agent to put their own life in danger before harm could come to their handler. Leader Dog Lady’s life started in a peculiar way, she lived for the first year of her life with an inmate in Iowa named Kevin. Kevin worked diligently to train her with other inmates as a part of the program through Leader Dogs for the Blind. Interestingly the long-term success rate of pups trained in prisons is better for placement as a lead dog as compared to other training programs. Since Lady came into Dawn’s life, her world has been vastly improved: they travel, they set goals, and conquer challenges like everyone else. Friends and family always ask them Leader Dog Lady what their upcoming adventures will be. They educate people about Leader Dogs for the Blind, go to Lions Club conventions to promote Leader Dogs for the Blind. We attend big events and fundraisers for this wonderful organization. July will be their four-year anniversary as a team. What a beautiful partnership and it’s so incredible to hear about the impact that a dog has on someone’s quality of life. The 9th Annual American Humane Hero Dog Awards® will premiere on the Hallmark Channel on October 21st at 8pm ET/ PT. The event was hosted by Beth Stern and James Denton and presenters included Kristin Chenoweth, Shannen Doherty, Trevor Donovan, Danielle Fishel, Vivica A. Fox, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jenna Johnson, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ally Maki, Larissa Wohl, Cameron Mathison, Debbie Matenopoulo, Kristoffer Polaha, Brandon McMillan, Barbara Niven, Roselyn Sanchez, Ariel Winter, Eric Winter, and Sofia Wylie.

An introduction to the Dog Lady's views on controversial topics in the dog world.
In Laura Citarella and Veronica Llinás's 2015 Argentine film "Dog Lady," a woman lives in the woods with no companionship except that of her dogs. This nameless woman lives outside of society, either by necessity or by choice or perhaps a little bit of both. The film provides little information about her and prefers to linger in silences and the sounds of nature. It's a slow, immersive cinematic experience that shows an unconventional way of life. In many ways, the film reminded me of other films that similarly portray women who are misfits and outcasts, like Mona in Agnes Varda's "Vagabond" (1985) or Janina in Agnieszka Holland's "Spoor" (2017) or even the title character of Barbara Loden's "Wanda" (1970). These are women who are, in a word, unruly and who are often marginalized because of their unruliness. They resist, subvert, transgress. They defy our attempts to categorize or make sense of them. They are flawed and excessive and different and strange. They are part of what I've coined a Cinema of the Unruly Woman, and I talk more about what that is and how I hope that it can be a starting point for looking at representations of women who are difficult, challenging, and elusive. I think we need these kinds of representations, these kinds of women, and I will continue to examine, explore, and champion a Cinema of the Unruly Woman. March 2016 sees me and my folk band The Young'uns touring Australia. It therefore becomes increasingly challenging to write, record and release daily blogs due to busy schedules, travel and patchy WIFI. But that isn't enough to stop me. Week 11 of this project brings tales of horsey hitch hikers, howling pissing dog ladies and a fictional meeting with the Queen.
