The issue of colourism was highlighted in a recent BBC news report about a Nigerian woman who bleached the skin of her six young children leaving them with discoloured skin, burns and scars. It is a form of racism where light skin is more highly valued than dark skin amongst people of the same ethnic group. In our conversations, we hear from women who share experiences of colourism in India including Chandana who has faced colourism from an early age: “I was six or seven years old when I would first hear these conversations of my relatives saying that she's a dark-skinned girl and you will have to pay a lot more dowry to get married and it will be such a struggle to find a husband for her.”We also bring together two black women who work in the fashion and beauty industry, where appearance is everything. Beauty journalist, Ateh, shares her experiences of colourism with Nyakim, a Sudanese American model known as Queen of the Dark after her naturally dark skin tone. Was passiert im Gehirn, was passiert im Körper, in der Muskulatur, was Zeit braucht? Chandana started her exploration of Yoga in the year 2000. At first, it was all about asanas, until 2009, when she decided to quit her corporate job in banking and insurance, to delve deeper into her yoga studies. She completed her Yoga and Philosophy Course from The Yoga Institute, Mumbai, in 2010. It was in 2011 that she found her calling - Ashtanga Yoga. One class in a festival in Rishikesh was all it took to convince her to book her tickets for Mysore, to study with her Guruji Shri R Sharath Jois. She has been studying under his guidance ever since, and received her Level II Authorization in 2016. Until she moved to Barcelona at the start of this year (2023), seh used to run her own Mysore program in Pune, and regularly travel and teach in Mysore rooms and workshops in other Shalas. Since she lives in Barcelona, she has been focusing on learning spanish and be able to soon start teaching in Spain too. Products that claim to lighten skin are often physically harmful, often containing toxic chemicals and dangerous ingredients. In today's episode of business daily, we'll look at why skin lightening products still exist, speak to people affected by their messaging, and find out why stopping sales is not as simple as it might seem. We'll hear from Professor Mire, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Carleton in Ottawa, Canada. She suggests that terms like "glow" and "brightening," which are increasingly used by cosmetics firms as substitutes, are as steeped in colonial and racial narratives as the words they're replacing. She believes the branding of these products continues to exploit historic and racialized associations between skin tone and status. Chandana from Mumbai tells us what it was like to live in a society where she was pressured to have lighter skin, and Professor Adbi from the Singapore Business Schools explains why he believes that companies are promoting beauty ideals linked to lighter skin, and fuelling demand that could indirectly put people's health at risk. Whooping cough, or pertussis was one of the most common childhood diseases and a major cause of childhood mortality in the United States in the last century. Before the availability of pertussis vaccine in the 1940s, more than 200,000 cases of pertussis were reported annually. Since widespread use of the vaccine began, incidence has decreased more than 75% compared with the prevaccine era. However, infections began to rise again in the late 1990s. So what is pertussis and why are rates on the rise again? Joining me to discuss pertussis is Chandana Bala, Chandana is the President of Global Insight Advisory Network and writes on the intersection of healthcare and technology. Over the last several years, a handful of states have passed legislation authorizing physicians to provide medical aid in dying for terminally ill adults. This typically comes in the form of a prescription to relieve discomfort and promote a peaceful death. According to our guest today, medical aid in dying should not only be legal everywhere, but this compassionate option should be made more accessible. For example, Dr. Chandana Banerjee, a palliative care specialist at the City of Hope Cancer Center, says that extended waiting periods before patients can avail themselves of this option should be eliminated. Do follow all nine episodes of Invisible Asia over the next two months on The Straits Times podcast channel on Apple podcasts, Spotify or Google podcasts. The Straits Times' India correspondent Rohini Mohan shines the spotlight on India's sewer cleaners. As many as a million Dalits - the lowest of the low in India's caste-ridden society - still ply the dangerous trade despite it having been outlawed for years. And they are powerless to escape it. In a country plagued with millions of choked toilets and drains, these indispensable workers go about their jobs daily without professional equipment, risking death from toxic fumes or drowning in liquid human waste, all to eke a living. Our series' narrator is Tan Jia Ning: Pedanna speaks of clearing out human waste in the streets, homes and offices, and of the abuse he faces daily for being a sewer cleaner (0:55) The Indian government's efforts to outlaw the dehumanising practice of manual scavenging has served only to force these workers underground (3:24) Few police complaints are ever filed when a sewer cleaner dies at work, and the workers are often powerless to fight for compensation (5:54) Senior sewer cleaner Munisamy shares how he copes with the daily disgust and humiliation he faces on the job (9:03) Munisamy's 17-year-old granddaughter Chandana is among a new generation of Dalits who refuse to be silenced (9:50) Read the full story by Rohini Mohan: https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/whats-worse-than-the-job-is-the-humiliation-we-face Produced by: Magdalene Fung, Tan Jia Ning, Sazali Abdul Aziz, Rohit Brijnath, Penelope Lee, Ernest Luis & Adam Azlee Edited by: Adam Azlee Discover Invisible Asia Podcast playlist: https://omny.fm/shows/st-bt/playlists/invisible-asia Discover Invisible Asia Video playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLnK3VE4BKduNKeEL19yhXFVHxGB8X315b Discover ST & BT podcasts: Channel: https://str.sg/JWVR Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2PwZCYU Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/2Lu4rPP Google podcasts: http://str.sg/googlestbt Websites: http://str.sg/stbtpodcasts https://bt.sg/moneyhacks Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg --- Discover more ST podcast series: Asian Insider Podcast: https://str.sg/JWa7 Green Pulse Podcast: https://str.sg/JWaf Health Check Podcast: https://str.sg/JWaN ST Sports Talk Podcast: https://str.sg/JWRE Life Weekend Picks Podcast: https://str.sg/JWa2 #PopVultures Podcast: https://str.sg/JWad Bookmark This! This episode is about "Algorithms to live by" - The computer science of human decisions by Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths. My guest for the episode Merl Chandana is a researcher of the Data, Algorithms, and Policy team at LIRNEasia, and surely one of the most interesting people I know.

This special series of The GamesIndustry.biz Podcast talks to developers about the titles that influenced their careers. This time, we have Chandana 'Eka' Ekanayake, co-founder of Falcon Age studio Outerloop Games, here to discuss how 1995 biker adventure game Full Throttle inspired him to join the games industry.. Ekanayake discusses how the film-like elements of the game spurred his interest in joining in the industry, and the ways in which the game's pacing and visual techniques are still examples of how games embrace and iterate on storytelling techniques used in movies. Game Developer's Playlist is an extension of a series we run on the site called Why I Love, in which developers explore their favorite games. You can find these articles here. Title music by Julian Villareal. The weekly news show will be back on Monday, and you can get more news, insight and analysis into the world behind video games at www.gamesindustry.biz.

It's not often we get to see Southeast Asia (Sri Lanka in this case) represented so proudly in gaming, and we dig into Eka's life growing up in Sri Lanka, then Maryland, and how his identity has shifted throughout adulthood.
