The issue of colourism was highlighted in a recent BBC news report about a Nigerian woman who bleached the skin of her six young children leaving them with discoloured skin, burns and scars. It is a form of racism where light skin is more highly valued than dark skin amongst people of the same ethnic group. In our conversations, we hear from women who share experiences of colourism in India including Chandana who has faced colourism from an early age: “I was six or seven years old when I would first hear these conversations of my relatives saying that she's a dark-skinned girl and you will have to pay a lot more dowry to get married and it will be such a struggle to find a husband for her.”We also bring together two black women who work in the fashion and beauty industry, where appearance is everything. Beauty journalist, Ateh, shares her experiences of colourism with Nyakim, a Sudanese American model known as Queen of the Dark after her naturally dark skin tone. Was passiert im Gehirn, was passiert im Körper, in der Muskulatur, was Zeit braucht? Made with 16 lakhs he suffered 4-5 lakhs loss on the movie but won Best Debut Director. It took him 3 years to start looking for opportunities again Then he started thinking about his next film. He wrote a script and made about 25-30 people listen to it. Gram phone tirguthundi, Manasuna mallela maalaloogene is playing and Andam ayina ammayi baita vaana ani Katha cheppadam modhiletadu. But nobody showed interest. Anish Kuruvulla told him stop with the gram phone and Sekhar asked everybody he met to read one page of the script but they didnt want to. Finally he decided to self produce  Budget was going to be 80 lakhs and despite funding from friends, Sekhar coudln't afford it. Sekhar wrote the story keeping Pawan Kalyan in mind, and he tried as well but it didnt happen. Casting sangathi, they went for Raja who had done a bunch of movies most notably Arjun at that time but didnt get a solid break. He had done acting course in Florida. He is also a method actor. We cast all non-established actors as character artists in Anand. The process took 3 months. Casting heroine was very tough task. We went to Mumbai and Bangalore and could not get the appropriate one. Since the story revolves around her they tried for popular heroines like Asia and Sara but didnt happen. Finally they watched a Ayush shampoo AD on TV and in that there was a Bengali girl named Kamalinee Mukherjee. She had done theater arts and was doing modeling. She was acting in Phir Milenge Salman Khan movie at the time and didnt have any interest in South movies.  KM Radhakrishna was selected as the music director 2nd Telugu movie for him and he composed the songs in Necklace Road and in college campus, cinematographer and editor Vijay C Kumar rand Marthamd K Venkatesh who worked for Dollar Dreams were selected again. Sekhar loved Veturi's lyrics and all the songs were written by him.  Since no buyers came forward, Sekhar tied up with a distribution company and went for own release everywhere. And it clashed with the biggest movie of the year Shankar Dada MBBS. Talk of the industry was Sekhar's guts to go up against Megastar of all people.  Movie started with limited release with just 5 prints in Hyderabad, Warangal, Vijaywada, and Vizag lo release ayyindi. Seeing first week collections Sekhar had no hopes but then something happened, suddenly the talk picked up and ee manchi coffee lanti cinema janalni aakatukundi. The fresh feel, simple and natural dialogues and melodies songs spun magic on the audience. Prints were increased to 23 and then with hit talk buyers came forward. Sekhar kept Nizam rights and sold the rest  Ran for 130 days in Hyderabad and then on January 28th, 2005 movie completed 100 days and had a function. Dasari Narayana Rao was chief guest and Bapu garu also complimented Sekhar.  Overall it was a success at the box office and made Sekhar Kammula a notable director. Breakthrough for the entire cast and crew except Anish Kuruvilla who would have to wait 12 years more to get a break in Pellichoopulu. He also directed a film called Avakai Biryani in 2008 starring Kamal Kamaraju and Bindhu Madhavi which did not work at the box office. He also directed Ko Ante Koti starring Shawanand and Srihari

Products that claim to lighten skin are often physically harmful, often containing toxic chemicals and dangerous ingredients. In today's episode of business daily, we'll look at why skin lightening products still exist, speak to people affected by their messaging, and find out why stopping sales is not as simple as it might seem. We'll hear from Professor Mire, Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Carleton in Ottawa, Canada. She suggests that terms like "glow" and "brightening," which are increasingly used by cosmetics firms as substitutes, are as steeped in colonial and racial narratives as the words they're replacing. She believes the branding of these products continues to exploit historic and racialized associations between skin tone and status. Chandana from Mumbai tells us what it was like to live in a society where she was pressured to have lighter skin, and Professor Adbi from the Singapore Business Schools explains why he believes that companies are promoting beauty ideals linked to lighter skin, and fuelling demand that could indirectly put people's health at risk. Over the last several years, a handful of states have passed legislation authorizing physicians to provide medical aid in dying for terminally ill adults. This typically comes in the form of a prescription to relieve discomfort and promote a peaceful death. According to our guest today, medical aid in dying should not only be legal everywhere, but this compassionate option should be made more accessible. For example, Dr. Chandana Banerjee, a palliative care specialist at the City of Hope Cancer Center, says that extended waiting periods before patients can avail themselves of this option should be eliminated. Dr. Banerjee also discusses her poetry books in today's episode!

Our series' narrator is Tan Jia Ning:  Pedanna speaks of clearing out human waste in the streets, homes and offices, and of the abuse he faces daily for being a sewer cleaner (0:55) The Indian government's efforts to outlaw the dehumanising practice of manual scavenging has served only to force these workers underground (3:24) Few police complaints are ever filed when a sewer cleaner dies at work, and the workers are often powerless to fight for compensation (5:54) Senior sewer cleaner Munisamy shares how he copes with the daily disgust and humiliation he faces on the job (9:03) Munisamy's 17-year-old granddaughter Chandana is among a new generation of Dalits who refuse to be silenced (9:50) Read the full story by Rohini Mohan: https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/whats-worse-than-the-job-is-the-humiliation-we-face Produced by: Magdalene Fung, Tan Jia Ning, Sazali Abdul Aziz, Rohit Brijnath, Penelope Lee, Ernest Luis & Adam Azlee Edited by: Adam Azlee Discover ST's Invisible Asia podcast series: Channel: https://str.sg/wuZn Apple Podcasts: https://str.sg/wu3s Spotify: https://str.sg/wuJH SPH Awedio app: https://www.awedio.sg/ Website: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Feedback to: podcast@sph.com.sg Invisible Asia Videos: https://str.sg/wuTU --- Discover ST's special edition podcasts: Singapore's War On Covid: https://str.sg/wuJa The Unsolved Mysteries of South-east Asia: https://str.sg/wuZ2 Stop Scams: https://str.sg/wuZB Invisible Asia: https://str.sg/wuZn --- Discover more ST podcast series: Asian Insider: https://str.sg/JWa7 Green Pulse: https://str.sg/JWaf Health Check: https://str.sg/JWaN In Your Opinion: https://str.sg/w7Qt Your Money & Career: https://str.sg/wB2m SG Extra: https://str.sg/wukR #PopVultures: https://str.sg/JWad ST Sports Talk: https://str.sg/JWRE Bookmark This!: https://str.sg/JWas Lunch With Sumiko: https://str.sg/J6hQ Discover ST Podcasts: http://str.sg/stpodcasts Discover BT Podcasts: https://bt.sg/pcPL Follow our shows then, if you like short, practical podcasts!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This special series of The GamesIndustry.biz Podcast talks to developers about the titles that influenced their careers. This time, we have Chandana 'Eka' Ekanayake, co-founder of Falcon Age studio Outerloop Games, here to discuss how 1995 biker adventure game Full Throttle inspired him to join the games industry.. Ekanayake discusses how the film-like elements of the game spurred his interest in joining in the industry, and the ways in which the game's pacing and visual techniques are still examples of how games embrace and iterate on storytelling techniques used in movies. Game Developer's Playlist is an extension of a series we run on the site called Why I Love, in which developers explore their favorite games. You can find these articles here.
