This week on The Joy of Cruising Podcast, I am delighted to welcome Donna K. Philips. I wrote about Donna in my new release The Joy of Cruising Again in a section called ‘The Fun ships,' where I featured Donna's dad, the cruise industry, and carnival cruise line food and beverage giant Everette Daniel Phillips, in a chapter titled ‘Hot, Hot, Hot: Donna K. Phillips Remembers Her Fun Ship Father.' In the introduction to The Fun Ships, I wrote: “Carnival Cruise Lines owned the brand, and the space in the fledgling cruise market, of The Fun Ships, essentially from its beginning with the launch of Mardi Gras in 1972 and Carnivale in 1975. In 1977, Joe Farcus was commissioned by Carnival to design its third ship, the Festivale, and stayed to design its next 30 or so ships. Today the retired Farcus is an internationally known icon of design. Shortly thereafter, food and beverage innovator, Everette Phillips, came to Carnival after stints with Morrisons Cafeteria, Eastern Steamship Line, Commodore Cruise Line (with its dancing waiters), and Chandris Cruises (now Celebrity Cruise Line), and stayed at Carnival until retirement. The late Phillips was recognized universally by the cruise industry as a food and beverage giant. No one did more to bring to life the motto ‘The Fun Ships,' than Joe Farcus and Everette Phillips.” Perhaps that bold assertion is subject to discussion. If so, perhaps we can talk about it on The Joy of Cruising Podcast! Joe Farcus was on The Joy of Cruising Podcast episode#30. Today through the words of Donna, who shared much of her dad's experiences from the time of her first cruise with him at 11 months old through his retirement from carnival in 1997, we get a sense of the other The Fun Ships pioneer, Mr. Phillips, as he was known as by the many people who worked with him and for him. I met Donna a couple of years ago. I was talking to a friend about the premise of The Joy of Cruising series, and she said, “You should speak with Donna Phillips; she's part of cruising royalty.” Of course, that piqued my curiosity, and I asked if she could facilitate an introduction to Donna. She stated that she would and then shortly after our call, forwarded me an article shedding light on “cruising royalty.” The article was “Carnival family mourns Food & Beverage giant Everette Phillips,” Seatrade cruise news, by Anne Kalosh, and quoted several former associates of Mr. Phillips, one of whom I was familiar with, John Heald. I knew I needed to research Phillips and meet Donna. Support the show

The 20-day test was conducted in partnership with GoodFuels, a leading producer and supplier of sustainable biofuels for the transportation industry, and Wärtsilä, a global leader in power and propulsion technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine market. The assessment was completed September 7. In the first five days of the test the ship used a mix of 30% biofuel and 70% marine gas oil (MGO) in one of its main auxiliary engines. For the final 15 days of testing, the ship used 100% biofuel. According to GoodFuels, there was a 78% decrease in lifecycle CO2 emissions during the final 15 days of trial compared to marine gas oil emissions.Dutch-flagged Volendam was selected for the test since it was located at the Port of Rotterdam, one of the global ports where GoodFuels operates the infrastructure necessary to provide biofuel waterside fueling services. There is no significant difference for the ship's team members in handling regular fuel oil versus biofuel. The use of a “drop-in” biofuel such as the one tested on Volendam requires no shipboard refitting or special equipment. What Are Biofuels? The advanced biofuel is derived from feedstocks that are certified as 100% waste or residue, with no land-use issues and no competition with food production or deforestation.Holland America Line's 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage Returns After a DecadeHolland America Line is continuing to bolster its longer voyages departing from a North America homeport, and the 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage is the newest addition. In 2018, Carnival Corporation purchased the remaining portion of the dome and dramatically expanded the facility with significant upgrades. The expansion more than doubled the size of the terminal to 146,000 square feetCarnival's first glimpse at Carnival CelebrationIn conjunction with the kickoff of the company's 50th birthday festivities, Carnival Cruise Line is giving guests a first look at Carnival Celebration, sister ship to the incredibly popular Mardi Gras, that will debut in Miami this November, revealing details on four of its six zones including Celebration Central. On a Carnival cruise, guests' vacations start in the atrium, and on Carnival Celebration, that is in Celebration Central. Spanning Decks 6, 7 and 8, Celebration Central is an update to the fabulous starboard side atrium that debuted on Mardi Gras, designed as the heart of the ship's celebratory spirit with a whole new look and the feeling of a festive party woven throughout.Celebration Central will also feature the awe-inspiring, three-deck-high atrium that guests are quickly getting to know and love, but with a ceiling that appears as a burst of a confetti canon made of approximately 1,400 color-changing lighting fixtures that will transform from day to night. Functional as it is eye-catching, the space will include 3,000-square-foot floor-to-ceiling windows on the side of the ship that will change into 16 individually controlled, six- by 14-foot LED screens to work hand in hand with the ever-changing entertainment options, including live music, special effects, aerial acrobatic performances, and high-energy shows.Introducing nods to Carnival's Fun Ship history, guests will spot pieces from former Carnival ships that will be repurposed to blend with the ship's modern decor throughout Celebration Central and beyond. For example, in the Aquaria Bar, ocean-themed glass murals from Carnival Victory by Italian artist Luciano Vistosi will be incorporated into a striking two-deck-high decorative wall behind the bar to create an aquarium-like effect, inspiring the name. And the Tropicale Bar is named after Carnival's first ship to sport the line's iconic funnel.Celebration Central will also include food and beverage options, such as JavaBlue Café, Bonsai Sushi and Bonsai Teppanyaki, and feel-good entertainment such as Piano Bar 88 and The Punchliner Comedy Club. The Ultimate PlaygroundAfter such an incredible response from guests on Mardi Gras, the centerpiece of Carnival Celebration's Ultimate Playground (Decks 18-20 Aft) will be BOLT, The Ultimate Sea Coaster, soon to be the second roller coaster at sea, recognized by Popular Science with a “Best of What's New” award. Guests can expect the thrills they've raved about as all-electric, motorcycle-inspired vehicles race along an 800-foot-long track 187 feet above the sea achieving speeds of up to 40 miles per hour.Reaching a very exciting milestone, Mauer Rides, the manufacturer of the groundbreaking top-deck attraction, has fully assembled BOLT on land and is currently conducting initial shoreside unmanned test runs in Munich, Germany. BOLT will soon be reassembled and installed aboard Carnival Celebration. Designed for fun for all-ages, the zone will also be home to the WaterWorks aqua park and SportSquare featuring a mini-golf course, full-court basketball and an exhilarating ropes course.Summer Landing and LidoCarnival Celebration's Summer Landing zone (Deck 8 Aft) will continue to serve as the greatest chill spot at sea with Guy's Pig & Anchor Smokehouse Brewhouse, offering smoked-on-board favorites created by Guy Fieri and an assortment of Carnival's ParchedPig craft beers brewed on site, in addition to pools and whirlpools, The Watering Hole poolside bar, and the Heroes Tribute Lounge honoring military personnel. And the poolside zone, Lido (Decks 16-17 Aft), will feature all of the delicious and fun experiences from Mardi Gras including the two-level RedFrog Tiki Bar designed to transport guests to a South Pacific paradise, Shaquille O'Neal's Big Chicken restaurant, guest-favorite Guy's Burger Joint, Seafood Shack, and BlueIguana Cantina, with offerings perfect for any tastebud, any time.Cunard announces Matt Moran to headline inaugural Great Australian Culinary VoyageAcclaimed Australian chef and restaurateur Matt Moran to spoil food afficionados on board luxurious Queen ElizabethCunard has announced legendary chef, restaurateur, TV host and author, Matt Moran will headline the talent program for its extraordinary five-day Great Australian Culinary Voyage departing Sydney on 28 January 2023.While on board, the Australian icon will create exclusive dishes for onboard diners and share his passion for Australian food and produce with Cunard guests through talks and interviews.Cunard's inaugural Great Australian Culinary Voyage will celebrate all aspects of Australia's unique food and wine offering on a five-day cruise from Sydney on 28 January 2023. While the RRS Sir David Attenborough is focused on science and the logistical support of British research stations, Le Commandant Charcot was purpose-built to take guests on voyages to high latitudes, whilst conducting scientific research along the way. When it was realised both ships would coincidentally meet in Carroll Inlet at 73°15 south, it offered the perfect opportunity to combine the capabilities of both ships to work in tandem.Le Commandant Charcot features a unique PC2 hull design, with the ability to sail in ‘double-acting mode', specifically enabling the ship to tackle thicker and more dense ice; she does this more quickly and efficiently by sailing backwards.Le Commandant Charcot opened a channel by sailing astern, with the RRS Sir David Attenborough following behind, working to widen the channel. This collaboration enabled a 3NM channel to be opened in just 3 hours. Despite creating a channel and getting close to the depot site, once Le Commandant Charcot had departed for her next destination, the sea ice conditions were against the ship, and the RRS Sir David Attenborough turned around. It is now seeking an alternative location nearby to depot cargo for Thwaites Glacier. There is a long-standing belief amongst polar professionals in collaboration and support where possible; and that we can achieve more by working together.Le Commandant Charcot is an LNG-electric hybrid vessel. She's the world's first PC2 Polar Class ship, making her the safest and most capable polar exploration passenger ship in the world, as well as one of the most luxurious. Le Commandant Charcot offers voyages to explore deep into the Antarctic and all the way to the North Pole, and simultaneously invites scientists from around the world to make use of her onboard laboratories to conduct research to further our understanding of these remote regions.Fred. It’s no surprise that CyberSeekers and urban explorers tend to run in the same circles. One explores the darkest corners of the virtual realm while the other explores decaying structures left abandoned in the physical world. That’s how we came across this latest recording. A group of urban explorers reached out to us after they discovered an arcade system board with the word “Polybius” etched into it during an 2009 exploration of the TSS Duke of Lancaster, a transport vessel which had previously been converted into a tourist attraction called “The Fun Ship” before being completely abandoned in 1983. The legend of the Polybius arcade cabinet is well-known in the gaming world, so we jumped at the chance to see what secrets lay hidden in those circuits. We got much more than we bargained for.

Episode 7 we talk with Troy Hayes about the importance of Branding in today’s e-commerce. Troy has over thirty years of experience in marketing and branding and has influenced many of you with his advertisements. You drank Bud Light because “Spuds Mackenzie” and ate Wheaties because Michael Jordan said “You Better Eat Your Wheaties” and cruised on Carnival because it became the “Fun Ship.” Troy was the creator of these iconic slogans and has helped many companies launch their new product or service. Troy defines Branding as “A relationship between the product and the consumer” and further defines Branding in three steps; who are you, what do you do and why should I care? Troy also states “make sure you know why you are better than the competition.” If you are having difficulty defining this, Troy can help you figure out what makes you better. I asked Troy who should call him? “Anyone who has a tough marketing issue.” states Troy. So if your company is small, mid-size or a larger company launching a new product or service, call Troy Hayes and his company to put you on the right path. Who knows, you could be the next Spuds! Troy’s tip for those who live here or moving here is this. Explore the history of Florida, “get off the main drag and hit the back roads” says Troy. Florida is steeped in history and many of these sites are fading fast. Mentioned in this Episode: Engine 29 Barrier Island
