Supreme Court Issues Ruling on ‘Ghost Guns' | Facts Matter

We dive deep into the shocking 7-2 Supreme Court ruling on ghost guns that has the Second Amendment community questioning everything. Gun rights advocates expected a victory but instead witnessed conservative justices side with the Biden administration in the Bondi v. Vanderstalk case. This week, we're taking a close look at the Supreme Court's ruling in Bondi v. VanDerStok. To do that, we have the Independence Institute's David Kopel on the show. Kopel has written extensively on gun policy and been cited repeatedly at the Supreme Court. So, there are few people better qualified to dissect what the VanDerStok ruling means. Kopel argued the decision upholding the ATF's "ghost gun" kit ban is relatively narrow, but still likely applies to more than just the Polymer80 "buy build shoot" kits discussed at length by the majority. He also explained why the majority decided the case as a facial challenge and why he, along with Justices Thomas and Alito, disagrees with the use of that standard. He said the Trump Administration could have tried to intervene in this case, but didn't move fast enough. However, he argued that it can still try to undo the rule despite the decision. Kopel also gave his view on where the balance of the court lies on gun issues and whether there's a reliable way to read what they might do with other pending gun cases. The Supreme Court decided in a 7-2 decision this week that ghost guns, the guns sold in pieces the consumer then puts together, are firearms and, therefore, required to have serial numbers and backround checks like any other gun. The Atlantic on Wednesday published more messages from the Signal group that included top U.S. officials, including Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote on social media platform X that “The Atlantic has conceded: these were NOT ‘war plans.'”Should taxpayer dollars be used to fund public media? That's the heart of the question of a hearing on Capitol Hill today. The Oversight committee's DOGE panel is probing the CEO's of NPR and PBS. Republicans accuse the outlets of reporting bias in favor of Democrats, while democrats say there are bigger issues at hand that should take priority.The Supreme Court upheld a regulation targeting largely untraceable "ghost guns" imposed by the previous administration in a crackdown on firearms whose use has proliferated in crimes nationwide, finding the measure to be consistent with a 1968 federal law.

Cox vetoes bill that would have changed the relationship between the judicial and the executive branches  Governor Spencer Cox has vetoed his second bill of 2025. Senate Bill 296 would have changed how the Chief Justice of the Utah Supreme Court is chosen. Currently, the other justices on the State Supreme Court choose the Chief Justice. The bill -- which Cox vetoed yesterday -- would have given the selection power to the Governor himself, with confirmation from the State Senate. The Supreme Court upheld Biden-era regulations on ghost guns. Those are firearms that can be put together at home with partially assembled kits, making them nearly impossible to trace. Sales of those guns exploded after they came onto the market and their use in gun crimes also rose significantly.
