Continuing the path of destruction and erasure of the OG creators of D&D, Wizards of the Coast has announced that the new DND 5.5/OneDND starter set will include a new version of B2: Keep on the Borderlands, but "updated for modern audiences." Why are they intentionally scrubbing or rewriting classic content that has no need for revision? Then, after the news which includes even MORE reimaginings, the gang talks about how you can build layers of intrigue, mystery, and engagement as a Dungeon Master for the players at your table! ----more---- The News: ...not just "Keep" Diablo IV borrowing from D2! Well, Wizards of the Coast (with lots of Hasbro fingerprints) has stuck it to fans again -- this time, their 5e base. WotC has chosen to force the shift to OneDND and will auto convert all materials in D&D Beyond to the new platform, once again breaking their word about backwards compatibility. The SparkleTroll crowd is NOT happy. Can we utilize this move to save one or more 5e darlings and bolster our corner of the hobby? Continuing the 2-part show from last week, Grim Jim joins RD and Bert to talk about the discussion in the mainstream TTRPG/DnD hobby for the "need" for game designers to insert and address political themes, social justice, and "wrongs" of society in their games. Why is this a "need?" Answer: It is not. Plus, we begin the show laughing at some insanity in the pop media with the news and a trip to our favorite inmates-running-the-asylum online cesspool, Reddit. ----more---- The News: Pop it! Milk it! Surprise, surprise: Wizards of the Coast continues to "re-imagine" Dungeons & Dragons... potentially into the grave. Wizards of the Coast has dropped a bunch of the "New" Dungeons & Dragons art... and it is just as hideous, woke, and racist as you could hope for. Birthed from last week's "Session Zero" descriptions, we have TWO topics this week that make the show -- and our heads spin: Backstories... and Encounter Balance. Are they needed? The gang digs into NPCs this week! Talking about how to make effective and memorable characters, what to avoid in NPC creation, and how to sidestep tropes and the "predictable" nature of this important piece of the TTRPG/DnD puzzle. Hey guys! This week I'm trying something brand new on the podcast. I created an "audiobook" edition of some of my favorite hedge fund letters. This week, I read the Q4 letters from the following funds: Greenhaven Road Capital Laughing Water Capital Greenlight Capital There is one other podcast that does this (Capital Literature), but I thought having a more human voice would make it easier to listen to, hopefully you agree. Also, I thought now would be a great time to try this as I'm traveling to FL for my bachelor party. I look forward to resuming the usual person-to-person interview style you've come to appreciate on the podcast. Finally, a big thanks to the following sponsors for making the podcast a reality. Erik and I catch up with our friend from the old Greenhaven neighborhood (where we grew up as kids) Chris Barthol. One of the best boot hockey goalies I've ever played with, Chris talks about how he got into music and his progression as a musician. We also talk about the mischief we caused in the neighborhood as kids (Chris and Erik were usually the culprits). We end this one with a music/sports trivia game between Chris and Erik.

Kristin Olsen is a member of the Stanislaus County Board of Supervisors and the former leader of the Republican caucus in the California State Assembly. Her recent column "GOP is dead in California. A new way must rise" made waves for its incisive analysis of the maladies of the GOP in California. Olsen argues that the old GOP brand of opportunity for all - regardless of creed or color - has given way to extremist rhetoric, racial resentment, and a toxic national brand associated with President Trump. Join us as we talk about the increasingly polarized two party system, how moderates in the middle - of both parties - often feel left out, and together, we reflect on governance, the California Legislature, and how to craft a new path forward. Tom Armstrong is the author of Sacramento Homeless Blog. He has spent over 10 years living, as he refers to it, in "homeless world" of Sacramento. Previously a freelance writer, Tom Armstrong provides a lucid and insightful view of the goings-on in Sacramento's "homeless world." We talk how folks end up on the streets, mental health, drug abuse, panhandling, and patient dumping by Sacramento hospitals. Tom also offers his candid views on service providers that purport to help. This is one of my favorite episodes to date. Many thanks to Tom for coming on the show.
