Heavy rain and high tides are set to tear through the East Coast, and locals have been warned to take cover. States of local emergency continue for the Wairoa District and the Hastings Heretaunga Ward, after torrential rain has closed roads across Hawke's Bay and Tairawhiti. Wairoa looks to have fared the worst, with 100 homes flooded and 130 people evacuated, and warnings of heavy weather will still apply until 11pm. Wairoa mayor Craig Little says locals need to stay vigilant.  "Our high tide comes back at 9pm tonight, and then if the rain doesn't stop and it all comes together - we could have the same effect of what happened this morning." Hastings mayor Sandra Hazlehurst says 140 families have been asked to leave their home. "I know there's an inconvenience of being with friends and family for another night, but we are concerned about high tides." State Highway 2 has reopened between Napier and Wairoa. So when the Class Dismissed Podcast learned that a science teacher was developing a scuba diving curriculum for her students at Hazlehurst High School, we had to learn more. A while back, Veronica Wylie got the idea to earn a scuba diving certification to complete research with Diving With A Purpose, a nonprofit that partners with the National Association of Black Scuba Divers to protect, document, and interpret African slave trade shipwrecks. The Challenge This idea is ambitious for any teacher, even those that live nearby the sea. But Hazlehurst has one swimming pool and is nearly a three-hour drive to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. And it's even further from the more transparent waters the Florida panhandle offers. Veronica says that her ultimate goal is to "give students a chance to experience science, rather than just memorize it." For most of her students, this curriculum will be the first time they have traveled outside of the state of Mississippi. She'll create coursework inspired by her students' dives, including a lab manual and discovery activities that will guide student-research efforts and encourage them to think critically both inside the classroom and out. But Veronica says she's also driven by something else. "I'm always a fan of breaking stereotypes, and there's that big stereotype that black people don't swim. And further, that black woman don't swim," says Veronica. "The more of us that go out and try to break these [stereotypes]. We can kind of change the narrative for the people that come behind us." So how is Veronica going to pull off this ambitious project? Well, she has some help from Funds For Teachers and a lot of determination. She shares the details in Episode 202 of the Class Dismissed. John Epperson aka Lypsinka Part 2 "Don't Let Fear Stop You"

Musician, playwright, and performer John Epperson, (lypsinka.com)(IG:@lypsinka)(TW:@lypsinka) who is better known as his lip-synching female alter-ego Lypsinka, was born April 24, 1955, in Hazlehurst, Mississippi. In 1978, after training in classical piano from a young age and attending Belhaven University (at that time Belhaven College) in Jackson, Epperson moved to New York City, where he took a job playing piano for the American Ballet Theatre and began performing in drag. Epperson’s character Lypsinka is a renowned drag artist who lip-syncs to the songs and dialogue of iconic screen sirens and to more obscure audio clips (such as a makeup application recording from the 1950s). Epperson has been praised for the pastiches of dialogue he creates, as Lypsinka’s shows bring new meaning to the lines she ventriloquizes through juxtaposition and gender reversal. One critic estimated that thousands of audio pieces are culled together for each Lypsinka show, calling them “expressionistic and hallucinatory one-act audio wonders.” By 1991 Epperson was able to pursue a career as Lypsinka full time, taking her shows around the country and receiving glowing reviews even from serious theater critics. Lypsinka’s blend of drag humor and performance art—in addition to her skill as a comedian—resulted in unique shows that appeal to fans of drag and comedy, as well as theater and performance art.   Lypsinka’s takes on Joan Crawford, Gloria Swanson, Bette Davis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Lauren Bacall have earned praise from critics and a fervent fan base. Her performances are complex and schizophrenic as she careens between emotional extremes cued by intense lighting changes and the sound of a ringing telephone. In shows like “As I Lay Lip-Syncing” and “The Passion of the Crawford,” Epperson creates a new narrative out of sound clips. Some of these pieces of audio are meant to be recognized by the audience, and some of them are not. Part of Lypsinka’s appeal is her ability to bring elements of drag humor and camp to her performances without disrespecting the figures she emulates—often the screen queens of Old Hollywood. Epperson refuses to bring sexist humor into Lypsinka’s shows, saying, “It’s so easy to do misogynistic drag humor” but he “deliberately trie[s] to avoid that.”   Epperson also works in theater and film outside of performing as Lypsinka, and he has played male characters onstage and in film. He has appeared in several feature films, including Black Swan and Kinsey. He referenced his roots in his update of Euripides’ Greek tragedy Medea, which he adapted to a Jackson, Mississippi, setting. In Epperson’s campy Southern Gothic version, titled My Deah, the protagonist who kills her children to get revenge on her husband. The New York Times wrote, “Although Lypsinka herself is absent from the stage in My Deah, Mr. Epperson brings the same deconstructive and reconstructive skills he uses to showcase that grande dame to his Mad magazine rewrite of Euripides. [H]e has found clever Deep South analogues for the workings of fate that ruthlessly hem in our desperate heroine.”   While Epperson has described growing up in small-town Mississippi as stifling, saying that he “felt like an alien” among his family and experienced bullying from his peers, Mississippi’s culture and artists have clearly influenced some of his work, from My Deah to the title for “As I Lay Lip-Syncing.” A gay bar in Jackson, Mississippi, was the first place Epperson remembers seeing drag queens perform lip-syncing routines, an experience that deeply inspired him although he did not begin performing in drag until he moved to New York years later.   Lypsinka is now considered a foremother of today’s most popular drag artists. She continues to appear and perform at drag events and fashion shows regarded by fans as a legend who influenced contemporary drag performance. He tells our Desare Frazier he hopes the act can help bridge the gap between Mississippi's rural districts and their more affluent counterparts.Segment 2:The latest Millsaps College - Chism Strategies, State of the State Survey comes during a time of heightened public health concerns and economic anxiety. The coronavirus pandemic has set the legislative calendar back months, and a shortfall in revenue means lawmakers will have tough decisions to make when drafting the budget for the next fiscal year. Brannon Miller is the Director of Voter Targeting for Chism Strategies. He says voters are keeping an eye how taxpayer money is being prioritized, and a plurality of them want legislators to protect funding for education. Miller shares this and more results from the survey with our Michael Guidry.Segment 3:For the first time in three years, Mississippi's ranking in the annual Kids Count Data Book decreased - falling from 48th to 49th in 2020. The rank is according to new data released by the Annie E. Casey Foundation and Children's Foundation of Mississippi. The four domains used in the national rankings include health, education, economic well-being, and family and community. Linda Southward is the Executive Director of the Children's Foundation of Mississippi. She tells us, despite it's low ranking, Mississippi showed improvement in many of the study's indicators. Hazelhurst is a town in central Mississippi, 4,000 strong. In the 1870s the town began to boom. It had become a rail stop for the newly developed New Orleans, Jackson, and Great Northern Railroad. Its growth was so large in fact that it became the county seat of Copiah County in 1872 which up until that point had been the town, Gallatin. It was here that one of the most influential and mysterious Blues artists were born, Robert Johnson. In this episode, we celebrate the life of Glen Solomon as he talks about fishing for redbreast bream in the blackwater rivers of southeast Georgia, something that he was deeply passionate about. Sadly, Glen, 52, of Hazlehurst, passed away on Friday, Aug. 16 while on his way to Appling Health Care in Baxley with what he told his wife over the phone were chest pains. Glen’s relationship with GON began in November 2005, when he first met GON Editor Brad Gill at Chickasawhatchee WMA. Brad was featuring Glen and his public-land hog-hunting techniques. From that hunt, a work relationship flourished, and Glen began writing stories for GON in January 2007. His initial story was called, “60 Days of Extreme WMA Hog Hunting,” and the title certainly sums up Glen’s extreme passion for not only Georgia hunting and fishing but sharing it with a large fan base of readers. According to the Wainright-Parlor Funeral Home in Hazlehurst, Glen is preceded in death by his grandmother, “Ma” Jurell Solomon, mother, Patsy Anderson Solomon, and brother, Greg Solomon. Survivors include his wife, Cindy Floyd Solomon of Hazlehurst; daughter, Candace Daniels (Jeffery) of Alma; son, Corey Solomon (Erica) of Hazlehurst; father, Wayne Solomon of Douglas; Aunt Frances Vickers of Ambrose; half-sisters, Latrice Solomon of Chauncey and Michelle Carter of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; half-brother, Wade Pritchard of Douglas; three grandchildren, Landon Solomon, Paisley Solomon, Madison Daniels, nieces and nephews also survived.
