We discuss how culture shapes art, and especially, how the culture of the time affects the Bible. How do the cultural norms and assumptions affect the text? Can we give power to the powerless within the story? And what about our own cultural lenses? We touch on creating our own sacred texts and ask the crucial question: can we still watch Carry On Films? Episode 201 Details Hunting Survival, Colorado Wolf Debate, & Global Travel Fee Hikes: Key Updates Latest News: Hunting, Outdoors, Travel & Western Living ALASKA: HUNTER SURVIVES BEAR ATTACK & GUNSHOT WOUND Tyler Johnson, a 32-year-old hunter from Sterling, Alaska, survived a brutal brown bear attack and a self-inflicted gunshot wound while hunting on the Kenai Peninsula. Johnson was hunting black bears with his father, Chris, a former US Federal Wildlife Service officer, when they accidentally startled a sleeping brown bear in the dense grass. The bear charged Tyler, who struggled to draw his sidearm before being knocked down. Despite sustaining severe injuries from the bear's claws and a gunshot wound to his leg, Tyler managed to fire seven rounds into the brown bear, eventually incapacitating the animal. His father, Chris, helped finish off the bear and immediately began treating Tyler's injuries which included an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to Tyler's leg. Tyler Johnson always carries a trauma kit hunting that has QuikClot and a slingshot band which the men used on the gunshot wound. The two men worked quickly, applying a tourniquet and calling for help using a Garmin InReach. It took search and rescue over an hour to get to the hunters, Chris made his son tell him hunting stories in order to help keep him awake and mind off the pain. Tyler was airlifted to Alaska Medical Center, treated, and released the same evening. This incident marks the third bear attack in the U.S. this year. Essentials: Hunting & Hiking Trauma Kit Before hitting the trails during hunting season or out for a fall hike; carrying a trauma kit is absolutely necessary. The backcountry is treacherous, and must be taken seriously. First rule - Always notify someone of your hunting, hiking or camping plans, destination, and time expected to be gone. Second rule - Always fully understand how to use any of the items in your trauma kit. The field is for reaction, home is for learning, understanding and practice. Trauma Kit Must Haves Tourniquet, Elastic Bandage, Gauze, Trauma Dressing & Trauma Sheers. QuikClot / Blood Stopper Emergency Heat Blanket, Headlamp, Fire Starter, Battery Pack. GPS Satellite Communicator: Garmin InReach or AtlasTrax for example. Duct Tape, Paracord, Moleskin, Tweezers. Benadryl (antihistamine), Tylenol, Ibuprofen. The pack, introduced from Oregon, has been linked to the deaths of cattle and sheep in Grand County, Colorado. Despite repeated requests from ranchers for lethal removal, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) opted for relocation, stating that this decision does not set a precedent for future wolf-livestock conflicts. The relocation decision aims to balance the state's wolf restoration goals with the needs of affected ranchers. This action follows the denial of permits for lethal control, despite rising livestock losses. The Cattlemen's Association criticized CPW for prioritizing wolves over ranchers' rights, highlighting the significant impact of the wolves on local livestock. The agency's strategy faces scrutiny as it walks a fine line between wolf conservation and livestock protection, with the future location of the relocated wolves still uncertain. This fee, originally introduced in 2019, helps cover the environmental and infrastructure costs associated with international tourism, which brought in over $11 billion from March 2023 to March 2024. However, the Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) criticizes the hike, warning it could hurt New Zealand's global competitiveness as tourists may choose more affordable destinations like Canada or the UK. In addition to the IVL, tourist visa fees will also rise on October 1, from $131USD to $211USD, potentially leading to longer processing times. Despite concerns, similar "tourist taxes" are common in around 60 destinations globally, such as Venice and Bhutan, and studies suggest these fees don't deter tourists. Nick Landry had a thought 5 years ago: to run a 100-mile ultra event. We have Nick back on our show tonight because he has accomplished that goal. We discuss the training, the mental and physical stresses placed on the body, and the run itself. The highs and lows of such a grueling event can be overwhelming but Nick was up to the task. Doing much better than he even thought possible, Nick crushed the Capes 100 course. This is a very inspiring story and reminds us that the mind and body can do amazing things with the right mindset and proper training. Nick writes a wonderful blog about his run at Capes and it made me feel as if I was there. The link is below in the show notes and I would encourage everyone listening to this podcast to go read his blog post. We are back at it from our summer vacation and we have a treat for you this evening. This episode was recorded in August after I ran the Dark 50 event in Minto NB. I met on the course Jess Vickruck, we ran a few laps of the 10-lap race together and started chatting. This was the longest race she had ever attempted. We get to hear how Jess handled the event, the course at night, and what it is like running on trails in the dark. Jess tells us how she started running and what led her to choose the Dark 50 trail run. Jess had a couple of surprises at the end of her run, I will not share them here in the notes, but we believe you will love hearing about it. I want to add this was an event put on by Jos Eijkelestam, Dutch Viking Events. If you haven't checked out any Dutch Viking events, I suggest you try it.Motivate to Move Facebook page, come check us out:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041607699495Motivate to Move email, let us know who should be on our show:motivatetomove.podcast@gmail.comAs always, please give the gift of life and donate blood today.
When I posted my headlamp battle 3 months ago and ended up recommending the Peax Backcountry Duo I was immediately flooded with DM's that there was some controversy indication the Peax was really just a rebranded cheap overseas headlamp. I felt obligated to buy the other headlamp immediately and find a way to see if there was a significant difference between the two. Here are my results. Created by Mari Feher, Hosted by Ania WiktoroviczIn July of 2022 Jaden Stewart of Gallatin County Sheriff SAR in Montana, Karel Kaiser and their partner set out to summit Mt Rainier in the state of Washington via the Ptarmigan Ridge route. As they started out from their high camp in 30+ miles /hour wind, they noticed a lone headlamp from the party ahead of them giving off SOS signals. At this point, the team knew there would be no summit bid in their day as the terrain became increasingly dire with truck size boulders coming loose as they happened upon a climber with a crushed leg. The saga of their 24 plus hour rescue complete with a Chinook and aided by their Inreach and medical training is fascinating to say the least.

Daryl Steeves agreed to spend a little more time with us on our podcast this evening and we are so glad he did. Daryl was on our show in episode #95, link below, and we learn a great deal about Daryl but we never had a chance to really dig into one of his passions, Nordic walking. Tonight we discuss a number of things about Nordic walking and Power hiking and Daryl has a great gift of being able to explain things in such a way that a person can visualize the entire thing. We love this episode and we are sure you will too so sit back and pull up a chair and just think about enjoying some time outside Nordic walking.A few links to episode #95 where we get to know Daryl: Apple podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/.../motivate.../id1526185332...Spotify podcast https://open.spotify.com/show/0JZQpDeNKPk7XVRBUtllcJGoogle podcast https://www.google.com/podcasts...The link to our Facebook page, check us out: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041607699495in case you want to contact us: Diane Trites: dianetrites@gmail.com or John Leygraaf: jleygraaf@gmail.comPlease don't forget to book your appointment to donate blood, the gift of life.
Valentine gets real about a hike in the dark woods and we find out Jill was called "Julian" for a majority of her childhood.
In part two of our discussion with Blair Mann, we chat about what scares Blair while he is out in the woods running in the middle of nowhere. Blair talks about what he has seen while running at night and how he feels there is little to worry about in New Brunswick. Blair has a surefire way to get those pesky mosquitos away from you, an answer you will want to hear. We talk about the Resurgo marathon that Blair signed up for and how he likes to either support local runs or volunteer. Blair discusses how Mark and Sarah have worked hard at Saint John Trail Running and how he loves what they are doing. Blair has signed up for Mark's run, the Bootstrap Bogie and he can't wait to go in November. just listening to Blair makes anyone want to go do a trail run. We hope our listeners enjoy this episode as much as we did recording it. We do chat about my upcoming run starting October 1st. I have a fundraiser page for the Canadian Cancer Society and the link is here if you would like to donate. I would greatly appreciate it, thanks! https://fundraisemyway.cancer.ca/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.personalCampaign&participantID=1135&fbclid=IwAR0E72fvRcZWcK348i2uOjD2lUu6WUG_vFdlrdVo252gOOegP6FlLpgXwcoMoncton trail running Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/search/top?q=moncton%20trail%20running
This evening we welcome Blair Mann back to our podcast, someone we have wanted back for a long time. Why? Well, Blair is well known in the running community and just an all-around great guy. We ask Blair what he has been up to since last we chanted and we discover he has been very busy. First of all, helping to promote trail running in Moncton and the Maritimes. Plus a bunch of events that had been cancelled and were now back up, this has kept Blair very busy indeed. A founding member of Moncton Trail Running, helping to crew people on their big goals and giving some very helpful advice, you won't want to miss this episode. If anyone is wondering, Blair just got in a fresh order of Moncton Trail Running hats and they look great. Limited number available so inquire about yours today, link below. https://www.facebook.com/monctontrailrunning/posts/pfbid0XYx3nhybBwv9noMVu2AxULfJ8oM5hC8dvFkMmVFwJRRG2oVgyJaA1pETxM3fWKGylOver the past several weeks, I have been investing time in training for a 100-mile unsupported run in a few weeks. ( yes, you read that right... 100 miles!!) I have linked my run to a charity to support the Canadian Cancer Society. Please consider supporting this worthwhile cause. This disease has impacted all of us in one way or another. Click the link below to support my fundraising endeavour. 00:00 - Intro - Ten Funky Must-Have Tools for Your Next DIY ProjectIf you do any of your own maintenance, I assume you already have a decent set of common tools. But in this episode I am going to tell you about some of the more off-beat and funky tools that I have purchased over time that I just can't live without in my garage. Also, unless I mention a specific tool/brand, the links are simply provided to give you an example of the tool I'm talking about, not necessarily a recommendation to buy that particular brand or from that particular online retailer. If you find a decent one that is better/cheaper elsewhere, then buy it! 03:07 - Tool #1 - Height Adjustable Pneumatic Roller SeatNot really a tool, but a height adjustable pneumatic roller seat definitely makes your garage projects easier. The one I own has a handy tray in the bottom to hold actual tools... or a beer. This is definitely my favorite "tool", and cheap too. You can pick these up for less than $30 from Harbor Freight with a coupon. Harbor Freight Pneumatic Roller Seat https://bit.ly/3CbdIbi 04:38 - Tool #2 - Headlamp for Hands-Free LightThis seems like a no-brainer, but I'm always amused when my mechanic friends use a hand held flashlight to light up their work area when doing a two-handed job. To get around that, here are several hands-free lighting options I use that provide a decent amount of light for my automotive projects, including magnetic lights or free standing flat-panel LEDs, but these tend to be less than perfect due to the indirect lighting that casts annoying shadows. The best option by far that I have found is an LED head lamp that can direct light exactly where I need it. My current favorite is the Spot 350 from Black Diamond. I like its combination of quality, performance and price. Aziz! LIGHT!! Spot 350 Headlamp https://bit.ly/3IRq6jM The 5th Element Opening Scene https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBc-7pEtxgo06:55 - Tool #3 - Trim And Upholstery Tool SetPerfect for safely removing those plastic push pin connectors used to secure carpet, plastic interior panels, felt-liners in trunks, door panels, plastic panels in the engine compartment, wheel well liners and more. Available in metal or plastic versions, these tools are designed to remove fasteners without damaging surrounding painted or plastic surfaces. Trim and Upholstery Tool Set Example https://amzn.to/3MeDu3h08:00 - Tool #4 - 7-Piece Pick And Hook SetGreat for getting stuck things unstuck. I use the different tools in this set all the time, but one of the most common and effective uses I have found for the pick and hook set is removing old coolant hoses. Corrosion tends to build up where the hose connects to metal parts, so these pics come in handy to help you get in between the rubber and the metal or plastic flange the hose is attached to. There are many other potential uses for these tools as well, so definitely worth having a set. 7-Piece Pick and Hook Set Example https://bit.ly/3eerqCn10:07 - Tool #5 - 24-Inch Flexible Cable Hose Clamp PliersThis is another tool that helps when removing coolant hoses, but instead of removing the hose, these pliers are designed to remove the factory spring clamps that hold the hose in place. These really come in handy when working in tight, confined spaces under the hood. 24-inch Flexible Cable Hose Clamp Pliers Example https://thd.co/3RMimmb11:55 - Tool #6 - Magnetic Pickup Tool + 24-Inch 2-In-1 Pickup ToolEverybody drops parts and tools down into the engine bay or under their car when they least expect it. Tonight we welcome someone back to our podcast, Sarah Lamos. Why is Sarah back you might ask and the reason is very easy to understand. Sarah recently completed a very gruelling 110 KM Ultra Trail race in Gaspesie Quebec. A very muddy and wet course with intermittent downpours at night but nothing would stop Sarah from achieving her goal of finishing. We talk extensively about what one needs to do to train for such an event. Plus we ask about her equipment, her diet and the friends she met along the way. How much her family and support group meant to Sarah at every checkpoint. Not many people can do this type of course with insane elevations in those conditions but Sarah did and she wasn't going to be stopped. If you have had any thoughts about trying any kind of Ultra you should take the time to listen to Sarah's story and see what it takes. Below we post Sarah's blog where she wrote about her epic journey. It's a great read and maybe it could help you achieve your goals. The link to Sarah's blog: https://sarah7106.wixsite.com/sarahsblog/blogOur Facebook link, check us out to see our interviews: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100041607699495A new link that we are adding, is a fundraiser link that I have started to raise money for my personal run of 161 Km this Fall for the Canadian Cancer Society. If you have the capacity to donate I would very much appreciate it, thank you: https://fundraisemyway.cancer.ca/index.cfm?fuseaction=donorDrive.personalCampaign&participantID=1135
In this "race report" Tom recounts his recent experience running his first "Backyard Ultra," running 4.167 miles every hour on the hour.
You've heard of the chip shortage that crippled automotive production. But you probably haven't heard about the critical shortage of headlamp engineers. And you also probably didn't know that thanks to consolidation in the industry, there aren't many headlamp manufacturers left, either. All automakers are struggling with this problem, but that's especially true for the EV startups. They can't get the lamps they need. Klaus Matauschek from Forvia HELLA, Wolfgang Huhn from Driving Vision News and Michael Pickholz from MagWerks Vision, talk about how the industry got into this mess.

Allison Tully, Co-Founder of Peak Performance Equipment and the InfinitiLoop explains the beginning of the product It was the summer of 2018. My running buddies and I yawned as we strapped on our daily o'dark:30 run when one of our friends threw her tangled reflective gear to the ground, shouting, "FORGET IT! I'll run without anything!" We stood staring at the $150 worth of equipment, one piece held together by duct tape, another tied with twisty ties to keep it snug (yet it still flew all over the place), when I thought, "There has to be a better way." After having colleagues, friends, friends of friends, and so along try out the belt and provide feedback of all sorts, Allison and her husband came out with the final version of the InfinitiLoop,w which I wear on my early morning and evening runs myself!Instead of looking like a Christmas Tree with all of the heavy gear and lights while you're out on your run, you can pick up the Peak Performance InfinitiLoop instead! The Loop illuminates the path ahead of you, making you visible to cars and other pedestrians around you, keeping you safe and away from the bad guys, and fits super lightly on your hips. It's super cute! What's the most common defect that leads to vehicle MOT failure? The steering? The tyres? The suspension? They all sound believable. But they're not even close. When we think about vehicles failing their MOTs, it's natural to think about the high-profile risks – the physical mechanics of how the vehicle moves on the road. But here's the truth: The number-one reason for a vehicle failing its MOT has nothing to do with the engine, the wheels, or the structure and strength of the vehicle itself: It's about the headlamps.
As Elis sat down to present this week's slightly shorter show he turned to his right to see an empty chair. It's the place where John Robins would usually sit himself down to broadcast to the nation, but today he was nowhere to be seen. Thankfully, all Elis had to do was turn his head 30 degrees to the left to look at his computer screen to see Johnny JR staring right back at him, ready to battle through 60 minutes of top quality radio. Yes, due to factors John was unable to be in the studio with Elis and Producer Dave for the show today; but thanks to the power of technology (and sheer will power) he was still able to join in the fun from home. The guys play a makeshift Made Up Game, a football-based law is debated in Petty Parliament, and Dave answers the call of duty… by sharing his emergency scripted intro.

In this episode, Diane and I interview each other with 2 specific purposes. We chat about my experience with doing my 100 km run. We get into my training when I was training and how much. We also discuss my actual run and how it went plus the many many people that ran with me and helped me along the way. Next, I ask Diane about her 2441 day run streak, how her streak ended and how she felt at the time about it. Then we talk about her accident and recovery and what her next steps are and her goals. We hope you take the time and sit back and enjoy listening as much as we did recording it.
On the last episode of Alien August Alex tests Clara's patience and almost gets kicked off the show by the overuse of the word Hooves. We also talk about Skinwalker Ranch and Erich Von Dalken.
I've got this thing when I'm training called "Headlamp Miles" – it's the miles I knock out in before the sun comes up. This morning, I hit *start* on my Garmin at 4:16am today for a 10-miler. It's not so much that I have to practice #running in the dark (though it does help come race day...). It's more about making the time to train. I'm a husband and a dad. I want to have breakfast with my son and take him to camp. I like hanging out with my wife on the patio in the evening or taking our dog to the park, then watching Mythbusters together before bed. If I don't get in the Headlamp Miles, I won't get in the training I want to do or spend the time with the two most important people in my life. Plus, there's magic in putting those miles... I hear owls in the trees and the first birdsong of the morning. On one stretch through an olive grove, there's a white owl that swoops down over my head through the trees from time to time. I've seen deer, skunks, coyotes, and rabbits because I'm out in nature before the sun rises. On a clear morning, I can see the black night turn gray, then watch the orange morning emerge over the Sierra Nevadas. What are your Headlamp Miles? In our #StartupSelling coaching program, we're running the August #Sales Activity Challenge – clients commit to doing at least 20 touches a day to leads and prospects. Some days are a tough slog if you're a #startup CEO with everything else to do every day. But these become their Headlamp Miles in their growth. I've been doing this myself this week – starting at 4:30 in the afternoon and wrapping up around 6pm. It's a time window when my son has his time playing Minecraft and I can jam on doing my 20 touches – my Headlamp Miles for the business, to lead by example. What magic can you create for business when you make the time and put your Headlamp Miles? Do More, Be Happy, Surprise Yourself.
