Being self-reliant can be likened to having insurance—an ability to take care of oneself if things go awry. There's nothing inherently wrong with accepting help; it's a human instinct, and in the context of motorcycle travel, assistance often leads to friendship and discovery. However, it raises the question of wisdom and responsibility to travel as a dependent, relying too much on others. In this episode of RAW, we discuss ways to become a self-reliant traveler with topics including camping and accommodations, route planning, financial preparedness and repairs, and more. Photos and links related to this episode can be found in the show notes.  Adventure Rider Radio is the longest-running adventure motorcycle and travel podcast, since 2014, and we remain committed to bringing you new and exciting episodes every Thursday. Two important things to consider when planning your trip are how you're going to finance your adventure and how to best equip yourself to handle an emergency. While it's not impossible to fund yourself while travelling on a motorcycle, it does require careful planning, budgeting, and adaptability. Many travellers have successfully navigated expenses and income by being resourceful and flexible. The RAW panel discusses novel ways to make money on the road and some important things to keep in mind while doing so. And we also talk about being prepared to handle emergencies while travelling. But, before discussing how a motorcycle overlander prepares for emergencies on a trip, it's important to understand what constitutes an emergency. We'll also cover what should be planned, anticipated, or prepared for, and what can be left to chance. Photos and links related to this episode can be found on our website. Each of the hosts on the RAW panel share special memories of places they have spent this time of year.  Listener Questions: Many thanks to RAW listeners who have submitted questions for the panel and this month we answer the following: Brittany Scheid: "I have a few newbie riding questions. I got my license this fall, and so far I have been searching for a good starter bike for myself. I am 120 lbs, 5 foot 2 inches. I need a good bike to practice on too, where do you all recommend to practice, empty parking lots? or do you think going right out on normal roads? I don't have much experience yet and need to gain more confidence." TJ Lyons: "Can you talk about what jobs people could get into if they want to support the adventure lifestyle?" "... have heard of remote into type of jobs or careers that can be done on the road to make some money from wherever you are in the world."  On the last episode of RAW, Grant asked our listening audience: What Holds You Back From Doing Your Trip?: Dafydd Jones: "In response to your question at the end of the October podcast you asked what is stopping you (the listener) from going on a trip and my reasons are simply cost and a young family? But probably the big one is where to go that’s not mega money. I have thought Europe but not sure where to go, maybe Germany or Switzerland, any advice?" Anonymous: "... since discovering the Adventure Motorcycling community I have been dreaming on getting on a longer trip. Not a RTW trip but gradually building up my experience and knowledge like you have mentioned to many times on ARR and RAW is the best way to do it. A couple of years ago my excuse was time and money. Didn't know when to do it and was very much into my career. Then..." ... the listener is not able to travel due to a medical condition in the family and the likelihood is that travel will not be for some time in the future. 20 Years of Horizons Unlimited: Grant & Susan Johnson This year marks the 20th anniversary of Horizons Unlimited, a resource for adventure travellers, especially motorcyclists. Founded in 1997 by Grant and Susan Johnson, their website, forum and events around the world, inspire people to follow their dreams and travel to far away places. Grant and Susan have touched so many people, making a huge difference in their lives, bringing like-minded people together. They’ve travelled extensively themselves, riding around the world 2-up. Through their experience and knowledge, they have created an invaluable resource for novice and experienced riders alike. A place where you can learn, ask questions, share information, help other riders, and tell your travel stories to people who are more than happy to hear about them. And after 20 years of being an integral part of the motorcycle community, we asked just a few of the many riders who have been inspired by Horizons Unlimited to tell their story about how they have been influenced by HU and Grant and Susan. It’s the least we can do, as we are so grateful to have found them, and to have had both of them on our shows, and Grant as a regular co-host on RAW. On behalf of all riders, travellers and adventurers who feel fortunate to have found you: Thank you, Grant and Susan! And what things should you be checking regularly to prevent or foresee possible breakdowns? Choosing a Travel Mate: How to figure out if you’re compatible? Do you do a short run/overnight first or? How do you handle it when on the road for a time, you decide it isn’t working and you want to go it alone? Especially if you’re in a far off place? ARR RAW Listeners Questions Answered: James Gale:  How stinky is too stinky? I'm interested to know what the esteemed RAW panel smell like. (No, my curiosity is not born of a fetish. It's purely practical and social). When you're going on a long journey what do you do about clean clothes? How many changes of clothes are reasonable given the lack of a chest-of-drawers and limited cupboard space on a bike? Do you plan to stop in towns and use a laundromat or motel facility? Do you take some soap and wash your clothes in a river? Or do you keep riding until the police arrest you for excessive air pollution? Noel Bowerman: What place did you find confronting? How did you come to terms with it? Gary Turner: What do you do when you have free time on the trip? ARR RAW Listeners Questions Answered: Scott McQueen: What are costs like on RTW trips? How do you not run out of money? Mike Jacobson: Can Graham recommend some useful hair products for dry hair I can use in the coming Australian summer? ;) Serious question this time: charging technology on a motorcycle. Phones are relatively easy to charge on a bike if you've fitted a USB port - but laptops and some cameras' need different voltages than the 5V USB supplies or the 12V a cigarette style socket or simple connector powered from the bikes' system will give you . Do you invest in specialized chargers that will run on a 12V power supply or cross your fingers and hope to be able to plug into a 120V/240V mains power socket when the need arises? Also, how much equipment can you actually charge on your bike before you start stressing the bikes' electrics? TJ Lyons: How do you lock up your motorcycle when traveling? Do you use a chain or heavy duty cable or nothing? I have heard all of you mention so many great tips, but I do not recall anyone every mentioning if they do anything to secure their bike at night. Alex Druien: How do you get started in a quest around the world? **If you have a question for the RAW panel, send it to us by filling out the form at https://www.adventureriderradio.com/rawquestion/. ARR RAW Round Table Discussions With Travellers On this months RAW, at the round table we discuss travelling in poverty stricken areas, how we make our dreams of motorcycle travel come true, being an adventure addict and dealing with wanderlust. Travel in Poverty Stricken Areas: When we are travelling we often spend a lot of time in areas where people are poverty stricken or suffering in general because they have so little. How do you deal with that?   Dreams are where adventures begin: Why do you think you actually managed to do your big trip when statistically most dreamt about don’t end up happening? Adventure Addict: Do you think that after a time you become an adventure addict? As in, you know what the possibilities are, that you can make dreams come alive and therefore, want more. If you do become one, is there anything wrong with that? Living with wanderlust: For example, you wander for a period of time, go back home and soon find yourself itching to go again, so you pick up and go again. Obviously some people will think it’s really cool and incredible what you’re doing, and others will think that you’re a little off your nut. How do we deal with society’s expectations of us (what society considers “normal”) and maintain our wanderlust?  Show Co-Hosts Sam Manicom - Author of motorcycle adventure books: Into Africa, Under Asian Skies, Distant Suns & Tortillas to Totems - www.sam-manicom.com **Tortillas to Totems Audio Book: http://www.sam-manicom.com/tortillas-to-totems/tortillas-to-totems-audio-book/#.WRNadFPyveQ Grant Johnson - Horizons Unlimited - THE premier source for information on motorcycle and overland adventure travel since 1997. www.horizunsunlimited.com HU Events:  http://www.HorizonsUnlimited.com/events    Achievable Dream Online:  https://vimeo.com/horizonsunlimited **Enter the Horizons Unlimited Calendar Contest for 2018 here: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/events/2016-photo-contest-2018-calendar Graham Field - Author of motorcycle adventure books: In Search of Greener Grass, Ureka & Different Natures - http://grahamfield.co.uk/ **In Search of Greener Grass is now available in the United States. And if you're planning on taking a motorcycle trip in the near future, they've got some great tips on what you need to consider when budgeting for your adventure. Handling Prescription Medications: Thanks to Gary from Memphis who wrote to ask us about how to get his prescription meds, including controlled substances, while traveling outside of the Canada and the United States. Thanks to Sam Manicom for providing the following links: International Narcotics Control Board: https://www.incb.org/ https://www.incb.org/incb/en/psychotropic-substances/travellers_guidelines.html The Costs Involved on a Motorcycle Trip: When planning a motorcycle adventure, especially an extended one, there's a lot of consideration put in to cost. Making sure you have what you need to cover all expenses plus any unexpected ones is really important, particularly when in foreign countries. Of course, you need to figure out a budget before you go, so we've got together and discussed what you can expect and what you should plan on.  •fuel  •food  •visas, special permits, overstaying visa  •accommodations •repairs •carnets •medical insurance •bike insurance •shipping •vaccinations (sam) •bike consumables such as tyres  •medical needs (not covered by insurance) •city accommodations and transport costs when dealing with getting bike out of port  •emergency money •and more...  Thanks again to Sam Manicom, for this link to an informative site: www.mytravelcost.com www.mytravelcost.com/petrol-prices/ What about dollar per day? Here is what HU says…  To plan your budget, here's some rough guidelines: "First-tier" countries such as northern Europe, US$60-80 a day and up per person. "Second-tier" countries such as the rest of Europe, Canada and the USA, US$40-60 a day per person. Voni & Paul Glaves - Million Miles on Her Motorcycle & the Mechanic Behind the Scenes Voni Glaves is one of two women who have ridden over a million miles on a BMW motorcycle. Back in the 1970's, Voni had no idea that women could ride motorcycles, but with encouragement from her husband Paul, she learned to ride just so they could take their kids on motorcycle camping trips. And since then there has been no stopping her. She's ridden through the United States, Canada, Mexico, South Africa and New Zealand. To date, she has put on almost 1.1 million miles and is riding towards her goal of 2 million miles. And someone important to Voni is her husband and mechanic Paul, who did all the repairs needed while Voni put 1,000,000 miles on her bikes. In a time when social media and youtube is so prevalent, Ken and Carol Duval are not the norm when it comes to travelling around the world and reporting on their trip. They haven't written a book, they don't submit magazine articles, and they don't have a website. They have a blog on Horizons Unlimited which Ken says they haven't been able to update for a while and they do post on their Facebook page. And although they are happy to share their stories with those they meet or know, and, lucky for us, with Adventure Rider Radio, they ride for themselves, for the experiences, not feeling an obligation to let everyone know what they are up to every day.  Ken and Carol are on their second round the world trip, with the first one being four years and now they have been out for nine years. Jim spoke to them while they are on a break from their trip in Australia. Darien Gap - No Through Road | Dylan Wickrama BMW Moto Raft

Dylan Wickrama Between 2010 and 2013, Dylan Wickrama was on a world trip on his motorcycle. He left with no plans and he had a tight budget. On his trip he covered 210,000 km and road through 80 countries, starting in Switzerland and ending in Argentina. His RTW trip wasn’t about speed, distance or setting records, but it was about exploring the world, meeting people and discovering places. After 3 years on the road, he reached the Darien Gap in Panama. Considering his options, Dylan came up with a plan to get around the Darien Gap to continue his trip. And that plan involved water, his motorcycle, some oil drums and bamboo poles. Dylan wrote a book about his adventure called When the Road Ends. It’s available on his website and on Amazon. Website: http://www.ride2xplore.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ride2xplore/ Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/user/samarawickrama05 Darien Gap - Jungles, Snakes & Geurillas Where is the DARIEN GAP? The Darien Gap is also know as the DARIEN ISTHMUS, an isthmus being a narrow strip of land connecting two larger areas with water on either side. You will find the Darien Gap on the Pan American Highway, nown as the “longest motorable road in the world” in the Guiness Book of Records, a popular route for many motorcyclists. The Pan American Highway can be as long as 48,000 km depending what route you choose to take through Canada and the US, with the most popular routes averaging about 30,000 km. Adventurers often start in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska and end in Ushuaia, Argentina, or the reverse. There is no official route in Canada or the United States, but all Interstate Highways in the US have been declared as part of the Pan American Highway. The official Pan American Highway spans from Laredo, Mexico to Buenos Aires in Argentina. Between Panama and Colombia, on the border of Central and South America, you come to the Darien Gap,  just over 160 km (99 miles) long and about 50 km (31 miles) wide of jungle, mountains, swamps and rivers. The only sensible options are to go over it by plane or around it by ship A Few Basic Facts About Darien Gap: There are no roads, only foot paths or trails, no street signs. Exotic wildlife abounds, the likes of which most of have never known, such as jaguars, wild boars and venomous snakes. It's hot, muggy, the forest is thick and the mosquitos atrocious. Dangers are everywhere, there are risks of encountering drug smugglers, poachers, guerrillas and paramilitaries in the Darien Gap, which is also a refuge for murderous outlaws. The Darien Gap is home to indigenous peoples known as the Embera-Wounaan and the Kuna. Why Not Build a Road? In 1971 and 1992 efforts were made to allow a road to be put through the Darien Gap, but both were stopped due to environmental concerns, of which there are many. There is evidence that the Gap has prevented diseased cattle, which cause foot and mouth disease, from spreading in to Central and North America. The indigenous people are concerned that a road may destroy their cultures.  There is the threat of making the Darien Gap more accessible for drug trafficking and the resulting violence. And there is also the need to protect the rainforest. The Darien Gap has been said to be a natural barrier which protects North America.  Crossing the Gap For centuries, the Darien Gap has been a destination and challenge for many explorers and adventurers, and the exploration of it has usually been met with disaster. However, there have been many successful attempts at crossing through the Darien Gap, by two wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicles, rocons, motorcycles, bicycles and by foot. There have been several notable “first of it’s kind” crossings. The first successful crossing in a vehicle was in 1960 in a Land Rover and Jeep. An arduous journey moving an average of only 200 metres or about 650 feet in an hour. It took them nearly 5 months to cross the Gap, as they made their way through the jungle clearing the bush by hand, crossing streams and rivers, making bridges as they went.  The first crossing in a two wheel drive vehicle was in 1961, by a team using three Chevrolet Corvairs, which took 109 days. They completed the expedition having abandoned one of the cars. Between 1971 and 1973, the first fully overland crossing was by Ian Hibell by bicycle. In 1975, Robert L. Webb made the first motorcycle crossing. Between 1985 and 1987, the first vehicle crossing by land only was made in a Jeep by Loren Upton and Patty Mercier in 741 days, they would return in 1995 to cross the Darien Gap again, this time on Rocons. Since then there have been more notable crossings made by motorcycle, on foot or by river boats. To this day, any inland routes remain extremely dangerous. For example, National Geographic Adventure contributing editor Robert Young Pelton and two American backpackers were kidnapped there in 2003 and held for 10 days. In an National Geographic Adventure interview by Nicole Davis, Robert Young Pelton had this to say: "The Darien Gap is one of the last—not only unexplored—but one of the last places people really hesitate to venture to... It's also one of the most rugged places.” and “It's an absolute pristine jungle but it's got some nasty sections with thorns, wasps, snakes, thieves, criminals, you name it. Everything that's bad for you is in there." Although cheaper to go this route, it also takes longer and requires some good bit of organization. Episode 4: Lane Splitting & Filtering, Essential Repair Skills & Tools and Wildlife Encounters   ARR RAW Round Table Discussion with Travellers. Grant Johnson, Brian Rix, Shirley Hardy-Rix, Sam Manicom and Jim Martin. Missing this week is regular Graham Field.   Episode 4 Topics: Lane splitting & Filtering   It’s a dangerous situation for a motorcyclist to be caught in traffic, the stop and go, distracted drivers, etc. The University of California at Berkeley published a report in May 2015 that says “motorcyclists who split lanes in heavy traffic are significantly less likely to be struck from behind by other motorists”. The National Agenda for Motorcycle Safety studied safety implications of lane splitting. “A motorcycle’s narrow width can allow it to pass between lanes of stopped or slow moving cars on roadways where the lanes are wide enough to offer an adequate gap. This option can provide an escape route for motorcyclists who would otherwise be trapped or struck from behind. There is evidence that travelling between lanes of stopped or slow-moving cars (i.e. land splitting) on multiple-lane roads (such as interstate highways) slightly reduces crash frequency compared with staying within the lane and moving with other traffic.” Lane splitting and filtering are a normal practice in many countries…Europe…Asia… riders are expected and sometimes required to pass between vehicles and advance to the front of the group.  If you are not accustomed to lane splitting and filtering (prohibited in most of United States and Canada) and you go to a country where it is law or expected, how can you be prepared for that?  What if you don’t want to lane split - it’s too scary or intimidating - how do you handle that? Do you avoid it? Just not do it?   Essential Repair Skills & Tools? How to Deal With Breakdowns?  How prepared do you really need to be? What are the do it yourself repairs you should learn before you go? Tire changing, chain adjustment, oil change? Can help usually be found easily?   Wildlife Encounters Dangers and not-so dangers? Should you be concerned?  How do you handle wildlife?   After putting almost a million miles on a motorbike as a courier in London, Geoff Thomas decided to pack it in, and in April, 2008, embarked on a motorcycle to travel the world. He took along with him the ashes of his parents to be delivered to his brother in California, while en route. On his return to England in November, 2008, he found that his rented apartment in Essex had burnt down, with all his belongings in it. Left only with his motorcycle and what was packed on it, he just decided to just keep on riding. To save on shipping costs, Geoff keeps a Triumph Tiger 955i in Europe, a Kawasaki KLR 650 in North America and a Tiger Retro 100 in South East Asia, where he also volunteers. Having, what Geoff says is a chronic allergy to most forms of work, he gets by on just $8000 US a year, and says he’s never felt richer.    Twitter: geoffgthomas Facebook: Geoff G Thomas Website: www.poorcirculation.blogspot.com Youtube Channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UCG8YIiyKQ1qYZRXWKZfqkCw Book: ‘Ashes to Bonnville’ - Poor Circulation 1   What We Ride - Gear Review BestRest CyclePump & EZAir Gauge David Peterson at BestRest Products has been manufacturing the CyclePump for over 10 years and states “there is no better motorcycle tire inflator available anywhere, at any price”. Jeffrey Polnaja - First Indonesian Motorcyclist to Ride the WorldBefore Jeffrey started his around the world trip back in 2006, he heard the word “impossible” over and over again. Jeffrey comes from a country where solo world travel isn’t readily embraced by their culture, and travel is more often done in groups. The Indonesian Rupiah currency is very low in value compared to the US dollar. And people told him with the time needed, the distance he would cover, cultural differences and the natural challenges, that it was a far fetched idea and that it was an unattainable dream. A solo motorcycle trip around the world seemed absurd to many people in Indonesia, but Jeffrey had other plans. And the more people told him it was futile, the more determined he became. He slowly gained support through some friends and was sponsored by an adventure gear company for some camping and riding gear. But, after five years of planning and trying to get the financial support he needed to make his journey, he made the decision to sell his company. Then in 2006, with just a basic knowledge of English, and limited funds, he set off on his “Ride For Peace” journey on his GS Adventure.Jeffrey’s trip was inspired by his son enquiring about why there was so much unjust conflict in the world after 9/11. He wanted to experience the world and different cultures, and to discover for himself the good and the desire for peace that most people have. He found that you don’t need to have any special skills to take on such an adventure, that any ordinary person can do it. You just need an open mind. After 7 years of riding, Jeffrey is back in Indonesia to enlighten people as to what he has found on the road, but he isn’t finished his ride yet, and plans to head out again soon.** Jeffrey Polnaja is a Jupiter’s Traveller. On October 28, 2015, the National Insurance Crime Bureau released a report on United States motorbike thefts.  In 2014, there was a total of 42,856 thefts reported, compared to 45,367 in 2013, a decrease of six percent. Great news, especially as motorcycle sales increased by four percent in the same period.   The top 5 motorcycle stolen (by manufacturer): 1. Honda 2. Yamaha 3. Suzuki 4. Kawasaki 5. Harley Davidson   Most motorcycle thefts occurred in August (4965) and the fewest were in February (1978) indicating a weather influenced pattern, which remains consistent with previous years.   With the cost of many motorcycle models now being $20,000 US or more, they have become a valuable target for thieves. The stolen bikes are either sold whole, stripped down for parts resale or reconstructed in to another motorcycle. Many parts, including frames, can be easily altered and reused. As such, there is a low recovery rate for stolen motorcycles, approximately 25-30 percent.   Wanting some great answers on bike security, we figured the best place to turn to were the people who ride, the experts who have travelled to many different destinations in the world, and who would have the experience first hand on how to protect your motorcycle and gear from thieves.   Sam Manicom is an adventurer and author that has travelled extensively.
