Nadia Mahjouri is a counsellor and group facilitator specialising in maternal mental health, with a professional background in research, focussed on ethics and feminist philosophy. She also has a fascinating backstory, that lit up the pages of her first novel, Half Truth. Her debut novel tells a somewhat fictionalised version of her own journey to find her family. Nadia grew up as a dark skinned child in 80's Tasmania, with a white mother who never talked about her Moroccan father. She had no contact and very little information about him or his family. When she was 21, she had a baby and just four months later packed him up, hopped on a plane and landed in Morocco. She felt pulled to connect with the side of her heritage and her identity that she had known nothing about. There, she started to unravel the many mysteries of her life and the discover all of the untold stories that lived within her DNA, in ways she could never have imagined. And of course, I wanted to hear all about it. Nadia's story is inspiring, moving and exciting. We covered so much ground, from the importance of identity and belonging, to the complexities of families and straddling cultures. This is a story about self-discovery, connection to roots and that age old question around nature vs nurture. You can connect with Nadia on socials at@nadiamahjouri. Welcome to the first official POP THERAPY episode of The Curious Life! As you may already know, I am a therapist with 18 years' experience in the field of human behaviour. But my therapy is reality tv and pop culture. On these Pop Therapy episodes, I will be inviting a guest from the pop culture world to join me in dissecting the shows we are hooked on, and unpacking the human behaviour behind the storylines and the headlines that have us all talking. This week I'm chatting with The Bravo Investigator, Dana Regan and we did a huge Bravo deep dive. We recorded this before the final episode of RHONY, so we don't get into that darkness, but we do share our thoughts on that franchise in general, as well as our current fave Southern Hospitality, the new season of Southern Charm, RHOC, RHOSLC, VPR and The Valley. Dana reminded me just why as Bravo fans, we might need to put down pitchforks and embrace some of the more unlikable characters on some of our favourite shows. A novel concept! We went all over the Bravo-verse in this one, so if you're a Bravo fan, strap in and enjoy the ride! You can find Dana on Instagram at @thebravoinvestigator and her brilliant podcast has just had a rebrand and is now The Bravo Investigator Podcast (formerly, I Take Bravo Very Seriously) You can find me at @jana.firestone or at thecuriouslife.net If you liked this episode please leave us a rating or review on iTunes and hit up the DM's to share your thoughts! Thank you to my wonderful sound engineer Sam Talbot, for putting this show together so seamlessly.

Leonie Akhidenor is property developer, a relationship coach and the host of the Parenthood Podcast, which was a finalist in the 2024 Australian Podcast Awards. Leonie is also a mother to two young boys and although she spends her time interviewing couples about their parenting experiences, she's not one to shy away from sharing her own, either. In this episode, Leonie delved into her own experiences with mental health, from anxiety to pre-natal depression and how she managed to move herself through some of those difficult days. We talked about the impact that family dynamics and background can have on our own parenting, and Leonie shared how the vast contrast between her father's upbringing in a village in Africa to her children's experience of relative privilege, growing up in Australia, informs her own choices in parenthood. There is so much in this episode, from taming that achiever mindset, the many shifts in identity as a parent and ways to balance our own needs and mental health with the demands of parenting. You can find Leonie on socials at @parenthoodpod and you can listen to the podcast wherever you get your pods. You'll notice that we've had a little identity change over here at The Curious Life, and you can find me on socials now at @jana.firestone. Same page, new handle! James Castle. Does the name ring a bell? I get it. I will admit that I didn't know who James Castle was when I walked into the beautiful, yet unassuming house at 5015 Eugene Street, in the Collister neighborhood of West Boise. Today's guest on our episode is Chihoon Jeong, the founder of Flask Coffee, ChickenStar, and Boost Talents. We started by discussing Korean history post-war, the country's economic development, and how Korean culture went from hanboks to K-pop and became globally viral. Chihoon shared stories about his curious life, including why he left Korea, his education in the USA, his experiences in Argentina and Paris, and how he ended up selling Korean chicken in Kyrgyzstan. Of course, we couldn't pass up the opportunity to talk about coffee with a local coffee tycoon! Chihoon amazed us by telling that there are twice as many coffee flavors as there are types of wine. He also explained why his best types of coffee are directly imported from Panama. Finally, we dived into Chihoon's other businesses, such as Flask Coffee, an authentic coffee shop; Boost Talents, a talent and model development agency; and his own clothing brand called Fuzzz. He also shared some tips for opening your own restaurant and dressing stylishly
This episode is a little bit different to our usual style, here at The Curious Life, and that's because we all need a little brain break from time to time. For some people it's long walks on the beach or a hot bath – in my case? It's reality television. In this episode, I had the thrill of chatting with American pop culture expert and podcaster, Ryan Bailey. If like me, you've been glued to the hourly updates from Scandoval HQ or are a fan of the Real Housewives in any capacity, then this will be a real treat for you too. If you're new to reality TV or are sceptical about it in any way, there are some themes unpacked here that may just change your mind. Reality TV isn't the fluffy escape that it used to be. It's become dark and raw and the storylines, like what is playing out in the current Vanderpump Rules season, have taken us from couch potatoes to armchair experts, dissecting and diagnosing and united in our outrage and disbelief. Ryan and I had so much fun in this episode, sharing our thoughts and theories on the themes of latest Bravo TV shows, as well as discussing the impact of reality tv consumption on mental health, the profound effect on viewers and why we so often feel so connected to the people we love to watch (and hate watch) on TV. For more of Ryan, you can catch his brilliant in-depth pop culture podcast at @sobaditsgoodwithryanbailey. You can find me at @thecuriouslifepodcast and @thedaysthatfollow and please don't forget to leave a rating or review for this ep on Apple Podcasts – it would mean the world. Ada Baker is a gifted psychic who shares her home with three bored ghosts. They tempt her into investigating the mysterious death of Mary Watts, who is found naked and strangled in her bathtub. This begins a series of exciting adventures for Ada as she draws on her unique skill of channeling the abilities of the dead to help solve the crime. She must convince a skeptical detective of her abilities, avoid the unwanted attentions of a sinister stalker, and try to enlist the help of a squadron of ghostly spitfire pilots to save her life. Along the way Ada finds love, adventure, fame and new friendships. Can the dead really bring justice for Mary and help save the living, too? Will Ada solve the crime, or will her curiosity mean she'll end up a victim of the murderer and become a ghost herself?

Alcohol: It's hard to think of a social event in our culture that DOESN'T include some form of alcohol. If you know me at all, you know I LOVE my wine. I also enjoy beer and am a huge fan of unique cocktails - I'm probably just about the first person my friends think of when they think of someone to have a drink with. And as a result, I'm probably the LAST person you'd expect to talk about a subject like sobriety and alcohol free living. In this episode, I'm joined by Meredith for a discussion about alcohol free living and we're going to talk more about our “area of expertise” – social drinking, and the drinking that many of us do on a daily or weekly basis. So, whether you've woken up hungover one too many times, said the wrong thing one too many times, are interested in improving your health, or just curious about sobriety and MINDFUL drinking might look like in your life, listen in. And if you ever worry that it's not as much fun, you won't have as many friends, or be as social without alcohol, we hope this episode changes that, and encourages you to lean in. Terry Pratt spent 35 years working on "Grand Prix Motocross" but died a few years after finishing it. In continuation of Pratt's legacy, We Went Fast reads Chapter 1 of his book. This show is a little different from the others I've posted. First: I didn't write it. A man named Terry Pratt did. He wrote an entire book about the 1972 World Motocross Championships and the chapters are broken into the individual rounds of the series, which detail his witty observations from the events, which he attended as a reporter on a very long European vacation. I'm going to read the book's foreword and Chapter One, which is the 250cc Grand Prix of Spain. If you want to know more about Terry Pratt, after you finish this episode, listen to Episode #9, “The Curious Life of Terry Pratt.” That's a story I wrote back in 2019 on this amazing unsung hero in the motorcycle industry. When I'm asked which of my stories are my favorites, I always point to this one. You can find the written version by clicking right here. If you like this story and want to see more, I sell the book in THE SHOP. It's only $40, the same price Terry sold it for 15 years ago when it was published. "Grand Prix Motocross: The 1972 World Championship Season" is an incredible book and a must own for all moto collectors. and it makes a great gift! Purchase "Grand Prix Motocross: The 1972 World Championship Season" When Pratt died in 2012, the book was thought to be gone forever and copies of it sold for well into the triple digits on eBay. But then I found the unsold stock sitting in a warehouse in the desert. It's available at wewentfast.com/shop but only while the supply lasts. We won't reprint it. It's makes a great gift for anyone in your life who loves motocross history. It's been an honor to finish Terry's work of preserving motocross history. Robert Moran arrived in Seattle in 1875, when he was only 18 years old and with only a few cents in his pocket. His fortune and reputation had grown by 1900, and he was the president of a major shipbuilding enterprise. He was twice elected mayor of Seattle, and he was credited with aiding the city's rebuilding and modernization following the terrible fire that struck the city in 1889 (Covered in episode 1 and to be revisited in more depth in July). The battleship Nebraska was launched at his shipyard in 1904, marking the pinnacle of his professional life. On top of all of that, he portrayed himself as a "nervous mess," fatigued from overwork and "ticketed for Lake View Cemetery" at the time. It was after selling the company that he relocated to Orcas Island, where he purchased more than 5,000 acres and began building an opulent estate dubbed Rosario. The highlight of the estate was a 54-room home that he had designed himself, according to the press. Later, he donated the majority of his land to the state, which created Moran State Park as a result. In 1938, he sold the rest of his property and moved into a tiny house on the island of Orcas, having been widowed and with his children grown.Listen now to learn more!A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at: https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastThank you for listening!

It was not until nearly three decades later that Knight was found at a local camp. After so many years in isolation, Christopher has made history as one of the last true hermits, leading many to wonder how he was able to remove himself from society for so long. In this episode, UAE-based Educator, Leadership Development Specialist, Coach, Visionary and Founder of R.A.C. E (Raising the Awareness of Coaching in Education), Beatrix Henkel talks about how approaching life with curiosity and without assumption, as if we have everything to understand and learn, will help us lead a more fulfilling, joyful and impactful life. Additionally, Beatrix shares how coaching can become an effective tool for harnessing and supporting personal and professional learning and development. On a global mission to transform our educational system, one educator at a time, Beatrix reminds us that change begins by delving deep within.Fully believing that curiosity is the key to personal growth and that life is a joyful and gratifying experience, Beatrix advocates that we take the time right now to learn as much as we possibly can about ourselves and others. She suggests that make it a daily habit of working on ourselves so we can bring less judgement and more curiosity into our lives. She encourages us to find the leader within, bring more empathy and understanding into our conversations, stay curious by asking questions, and focus on deepening our “being”, rather than “doing”. Beatrix believes that cultivating a sense of “being” will help us reside in the present moment with an open heart and help us bring awareness to every possible moment. Fully embracing 2020 as a real blessing, Beatrix firmly believes that 2021 can be the year of unconditional love and a year of inspiring and empowering others. A golf rules official's responsibilities cover a broad spectrum. They set up the course, oversee playoffs, and determine when a golf course is playable in a rainstorm and when it isn't. Perhaps most important, they help golfers decipher the game's complicated rules at pivotal moments throughout a tournament. In this episode, Alex Myers talks to retiring rules officials Slugger White and Mark Russell of the PGA Tour, and John Paramor of the European Tour about the highs and lows of their long careers, and which parts of the job made them sweat most.
In this episode, we meet with Kath and Terry, two of the lovely people featured in The Feed documentary, Covid Surrogacy. (Now available at SBS On Demand). Both Kath and Terry have their own stories about surrogacy here in Australia. Two very different paths that eventually led theirs to cross, and for two beautiful lives to be created. The doco explores the stories of families at various stages of the surrogacy process, from the perspective of intended parents, local and international surrogates and the incredible women caring for the babies who have been born during COVID and have been left stranded overseas due to travel restrictions. Kath and Terry share the events that led up both pregnancies, the reality of carrying a baby that is not genetically yours (and will be handed to their parents after the birth), the highs and lows of the hormones, and the emotional bond that has formed between the families through their experience. Terry and his partner Ben came very close to not being present for their daughter's birth, from travel restrictions to legal arguments and that left huge questions for both families about what would happen in the event of the worst case scenario. They share all that and more, and in this eye-opening discussion that sheds light on a slice of the reproductive world that is not often talked about. To follow the journey of Kath, Terry, Ben and their two gorgeous girls, you can find them on Instagram at Making Another Berry. As a therapist for the last 17 years, having worked intensively in grief and trauma and with families and young people, I have a particular interest in stories of overcoming challenges and turning them into triumphs. No one has done that quite like this week's guest, Blair James. Blair is the co-founder of the world's top selling self-tanning brand Bondi Sands, turning over more than $100 million dollars last year. As impressive as his business savvy is, Blair's vision and grit is only part of the picture here. Before his incredible success, Blair endured immense losses, from periods of poverty and the loss of the family home, to the death of both his parents at a young age. In spite of these family tragedies, Blair continued to self-propel and use every ounce of tenacity to push forward. Blair's passion for his business and his undeniable resilience is an inspiration. It was an absolute pleasure talking with Blair and his story is truly encouraging. The 15th-21st of June is Men's Health Week, here in Australia, shining the spotlight on the key issues in men's health to raise the profile of men, their health and outcomes and health needs around the country. Who better to share some insights into men's health than this week's guest - Dr Kieran Kennedy. Dr Kieran is one of those incredible go getters, with degrees in science and in Medicine/Surgery and is currently completing the last few months of his Psychiatry residency. For those that don't know, those last two take a total of 12 years study and a serious commitment. He is passionate about health and fitness and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health. Dr Kieran is incredibly warm and funny, intelligent and informed and we had an enriching conversation about men's mental health, the personal and professional impact of the current COVID climate, and what it's been like working at one of Melbourne's busiest hospitals during the pandemic. We also talked about managing anxiety and self-care, as well as some moving stories from his life as a doctor. He talks with ease about the more difficult things in life and as a mental health professional myself, it was a delight to tackle some of the bigger issues together. Dr Kieran's zest for life and enthusiasm for breaking down the barriers when it comes to mental health is incredibly encouraging, and I know we'll be seeing a whole lot more of Dr Kieran in the years to come. You asked for a juicy ep and you got it! Our resident sexpert, Counselling Psychologist and Clinical Sexologist Sarah Calleja is back in a powerful episode, unpacking the common myths and fears around pornography and the impact it can have on kids. Using Emily Rothman's Pornography Literacy programs as a launching pad, Sarah shares her thoughts on how we can use porn as a tool for teaching kids about some of the broader concepts around consent, respectful relationships and negotiating our own boundaries. Instead of vilifying pornography and taking a negative approach, Sarah shows us how we can use it to empower our kids to become critical thinkers when inevitably exposed to explicit content, and turn it into a discussion about intimacy and relationships that will help them understand the context of the sexual world around them. This episode will have you laughing and cringing but most importantly, leaving you with plenty of resources and practical ways to talk with your kids, friends or students about some of the more important conversations about life. It is only fitting that in Episode 13, we tiptoe down the hallway of paranormal activity and chat with part-time Paranormal Investigator, David Nesbitt. David shares some of his spine tingling encounters as a Ghost Hunter, that have taken him into some of the most active locations in Victoria, witnessing and recording the sights and sounds of the spirit world. We exchange personal stories about experiences with the unexplained and David gives us a behind the scenes look at what goes down on a typical night of ghost hunting. David's straightforward and honest approach to his nocturnal expeditions may leave you questioning your own beliefs, as he shares his journey from skeptic to believer through each spooky turn. If you've ever wondered whether authentic paranormal activity is just as they portray in the movies, then this one's for you, as we unveil the truth behind connection with the other realm. Don't miss the end of the episode, when David cracks out the professional gear and takes a wander through the house, in an attempt to connect with the mysterious footsteps that have been heard in the hallway of this Art Deco home. The results may leave your spine tingling too! You can find The Curious Life on Instagram or on Facebook and please don't forget to leave us a rating and review, if you like what you hear!
Curiosity propels both research and learning, the very things that UBC is known for. As students, we have the freedom to indulge our curiosity, but as we head off into the world, we often abandon it in favour of security. What does it mean to live with a spirit of curiosity? Listen as iconic Canadian actor William Shatner shares stories about the fascinating places his curiosity has led him, and the possibilities that await us if we follow our own. Moderated by Fiona Forbes, BA'93. This talk was recorded May 28, 2016 at UBC100: What's Next? at UBC's Vancouver campus.

"Why write the biography of a nobody?" That is the question with which Melanie C. Hawthorne begins Finding the Woman Who Didn't Exist: The Curious Life of Gisele d'Estoc (University of Nebraska Press, 2014) but in justifying the writing of such a life and then, in turn, excavating its contours, Hawthorne winds up exploring a number of issues fundamental to the genre of biography. In particular, the biographer's inability fill all gaps, the frequent encounters with dead ends and his/her reliance, at times almost wholly, upon sheer luck. Also, the legacies of the biographers who have gone before us. In d'Estoc's case, as Hawthorne writes, "It is almost as though these experts avoided finding proof of d'Estoc's existence and one has to ask why." One of the significant contributions of Finding the Woman Who Didn't Exist is its transparency- Hawthorne's willingness to include in her text the details of research, alongside serious critical engagement with the notion of what it means to be a researcher in the humanities and why humanities research matters. This flows seamlessly throughout her exploration of d'Estoc's life as she explores the fluidity of life stories, the need to continually rearrange and reevaluate them, "to keep creating unexpected bends on the old narrative paths in order to wake us up to seeing them in a new light." To illustrate this, she uses the story of a 19th century French writer/artist/anarchist, a woman who once pretended to be someone else and whose false identity ultimately historically hijacked the original. It's a story steeped in its times and yet one which also appears surprisingly modern here, and one which- as it is written- highlights fundamental truths about the genre. One of my favorites is this: "Stories teach us not to take things for granted, and the final lesson of biography is that despite the fact that specific stories always begin and end somewhere, in real life there are no such definitive markers." The story Hawthorne presents of d'Estoc is deliberately left messy, which is- in the end- perhaps its greatest strength. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
