Organizations need to adopt policies and communication strategies based on the acknowledgment that remote/hybrid work is here to stay. The current state of play is rooted in an assumption that it's temporary, creating tensions between workers and leaders and leaving pre-pandemic company cultures in shambles. In a survey conducted jointly by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) and the USC Annenberg School of Communication, communicators shared their views about how remote/hybrid is going four years after it was thrust on organizations and its impact on the internal communication function. These results were presented on June 26 at a session of the IABC World Conference in Chicago. A press release is set for distribution the week of July 1, with survey results available soon after.Continue Reading → The post FIR #414: Companies Treat Remote/Hybrid Like It’s Temporary. What happens when your frontline employees are tired of apologizing on behalf of the company? When public perception isn't in your favor? This was the reality Oscar Munoz faced when he took the role of CEO and chairman of United Airlines in 2015. So he went back to basics, embarking on an extensive listening tour with thousands of employees — and in time, things turned for the better. We sat down with Oscar to learn about that journey, what's changed since and the value of deploying this strategy. Oscar will lead a spotlight session at IABC World Conference 2024, “Leadership Is an Act of Extended Storytelling.” The format will be part fireside chat and part town hall, to which Oscar says in this episode: “Bring it!” Bring your best questions, ask him about failure and get ready for a refreshing way to kick off your time at World Conference. Roger Christie is joined by Craig Mullaney, Partner at Brunswick Group in a special edition of the podcast - and one that is essential listening for anyone who needs evidence and examples to get their leaders online. An emerging trend Craig and Roger have observed from different sides of the world is that multiple leaders, both within and beyond their organisational boundaries, appear to be working in partnership online.Strange. Why would that be doing that? What added benefits could working together offer leaders that they just couldn't access on their own? Why are leaders, even leaders from competing organisations, backing one another up in their posts on LinkedIn or Twitter? What could be gained by having multiple voices online, rather than just the one digital hero?Earlier this year, Roger joined Craig for the IABC World Conference. Welcome to episode 223 of the IABC International Podcast. On this episode we're speaking with Roxanne Beaubien about the Stronger than you Know campaign which has been recognised in this year's IABC Gold Quill Awards. The project was an internal mental health initiative designed to increase awareness and understanding about mental wellness and to reduce stigma associated with seeking help when experiencing a mental wellness struggle. The three-pronged anti-stigma campaign centred on testimonials from two members with lived experience, messaging from trusted leaders and a pledge project for all employees. Tactics included videos, a microsite, posters, magnets and a launch event. A post-campaign survey proved the campaign’s success in reducing stigma, improving opinions about those with mental wellness issues and influencing some to seek help if they were to experience a mental health challenge. -- Registration is now open for the virtual 2020 IABC World Conference! Professional development efforts, including sharpening interpersonal communication skills and seeking out a mentor, are oftentimes an afterthought in contrast with the daily demands in our professions. But despite what cynics may claim, ROI isn't always quantitative. Research proves that ‘soft' skills are just as important as ‘hard' skills in today's competitive business environment. Harnessing these skills enables communications professionals to be better equipped to ‘Think Forward,' which was the 2019 theme of the annual IABC World Conference. Marketing + Communications Manager and IABC Houston President-Elect, Hayley Ross, joins The Business Communicators to discuss this topic and key takeaways from the event, sharing how we can apply these best practices in our day-to-day routines. In this episode, we'll rediscover the lost art of interpersonal communication and apply those best practices in ‘thinking forward' for sharpening the professional mindset: Cultivating a mindset of ‘thinking forward' – what does it mean and how do I adopt this? Navigating unexpected change – beyond just acclimating to a new reality – that fosters professional and personal growth Engaging and connecting in meaningful communication while living in a world of 24x7 digital distractions You'll also hear Millennial communications professionals' anecdotal reflections on college-to-career transitions 10 years later – including their surprises along the way! This may be the first episode of the On Brand podcast where both co-authors were interviewed separately! I chatted with Patti’s Illuminate co-author, Nancy Duarte, last summer. The inciting incident. How did Illuminate come to be? “We noticed a changing nature of the questions coming from our clients. More and more were saying, ‘We want to use the power of stories.’” The Duarte storytelling methodology. “It follows the heroes journey — the 3 part story where we meet the hero, something happens, and the hero is changed.” We can use this archetype in moving ideas internally and building brands externally.
