His design not only aims to innovate but to shape the future of personal and sustainable aerial transportation.The Benefits of Aerial Autonomy: Autonomy in flying vehicles is, as Leo describes, paradoxically easier to achieve than with ground vehicles due to the reduced number of obstacles. In the air, autonomy faces fewer unpredictable factors like pedestrians, stoplights, and multiple vehicle types. Instead, aerial autonomy focuses on collision avoidance, scanning airspace, and adapting to bird traffic, making fully autonomous air vehicles a viable and less complex solution compared to self-driving cars.Revolutionizing Mass Production for eVTOLs: One of Leo's core goals is to make eVTOLs affordable and mass-producible. Drawing on his experience with Tesla and Siemens, he designed Invo Station's production process for efficiency and scalability, so that vehicle production could be completed in just two minutes, thanks to advanced automation and robotics. This approach allows Invo Station to eventually sell flying vehicles at a consumer-friendly price, potentially putting eVTOLs within reach of the average car buyer.Environmental Impact and Emission Reduction: Invo Station's mission is not just about bringing flying cars to market but also about tackling urban pollution and reducing emissions. Leo envisions a future where flying electric vehicles replace traditional cars for shorter urban trips, significantly reducing air pollution and congestion. This would far surpass the range of current lithium-ion batteries and make eVTOLs viable for longer journeys, enhancing both usability and energy efficiency in the electric vehicle market.Future of Multi-Purpose eVTOL Applications: Beyond personal transportation, Leo envisions a wide range of applications for eVTOLs, from emergency response vehicles to freight transport. Invo Station is already planning models with features like firefighting capabilities, medical transport, and goods delivery, all optimized to reduce weight and maximize functionality. These diverse applications could fundamentally change how cities operate, providing rapid response in emergencies and potentially creating a new standard in logistics and public safety.

A two-year in-depth study to help prepare Dublin and other European cities for the widespread use of drones in commercial and civic life has been launched at the offices of Dublin City Council by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport and the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications, James Lawless T.D. The project is led by a research team from Lero, the Research Ireland Centre for Software and Maynooth University in collaboration with Dublin City Council (DCC), and the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA). Speaking at the launch, Minister Lawless said: "Ireland has an established record of leadership in regulation of emerging technologies. As drones begin to be used more and more across the globe, at home, we have seen them supplying emergency medicines, delivering fast food, used for search and rescue purposes and to enhance public safety, among a range of important applications. Earlier this year, the Government held a public consultation on the development of a policy framework for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), commonly referred to as drones. The research partnership being launched today between Lero, Maynooth University, Dublin City Council and the Irish Aviation Authority, with stakeholder engagement at its heart, is very much aligned with the Government's efforts to foster the industry's growth while mitigating safety, security, environmental, privacy, and other concerns." Welcoming the announcement, Dr Ciarán Seoighe, Deputy CEO of Taighde Éireann - Research Ireland, the newly established research and innovation funding agency, said: "Research Ireland supports partnerships such as this to bring key stakeholders together to drive progress and capitalise on the advantages offered by innovative and disruptive technologies. While exploring emerging technologies and systems to capture data and support responses to critical events, this collaborative approach helps us to better understand its potential benefits and impact on wider society. Investing in basic research is of strategic importance to Research Ireland, as it allows us to support a pipeline of transformative solutions to bring about real-world benefits." Project Coordinator Professor Tim McCarthy of Maynooth University and LERO believes the project is particularly timely as unmanned drone ecosystems are beginning to emerge globally and involve a wide variety of stakeholders and end-users. A vital aspect of the research project, according to Prof. McCarthy, will be the creation of a digital twin for Dublin City to explore and simulate urban drone flight ecosystems, allowing researchers to address issues that emerge in a safe and controlled environment. "This digital twin will capture inputs from all stakeholders, enable simulation of drone activities and provide prototype digital optimisation services in addressing various business, market, safety, privacy, nuisance and environmental concerns," he added. The partnership will also deliver a number of 'state of the art' drone applications to show the benefits of autonomous and remote piloting of drones to support life-saving and emergency response applications in a Dublin City setting. "This unique drone innovation partnership will contribute to Dublin City Council's Drone and Urban Air Mobility Strategy 2024-2029, an ambitious roadmap to support the integration of drones into city services and position Dublin and Ireland as a European leader in Drones and Urban Air Mobility," said Jamie Cudden, Smart City Lead Dublin City Council. Enda Walsh, manager of the IAA's UAS division, believes the partnership will deliver crucial insights for safely integrating UAS into urban environments while maximising benefits to society and laying the foundation for developing UAS Traffic Management (UTM) for the State. How is Honeywell Positioned to Serve the Advance Air Mobility Market For that question, we head to Phoenix to speak with David Shilliday, Vice President and General Manager of the Unmanned Aerial Systems and Urban Air Mobility business unit at Honeywell Aerospace. Honeywell's UAS business develops new products and serves as a systems integrator for both airframe makers and operators in this fast evolving market. Its area of responsibility spans aircraft systems like avionics, electric and hybrid electric propulsion and thermal management; flight services such as unmanned air traffic management; and ground operations services such as predictive maintenance analytics.  In November, Honeywell announced its Advanced Air Mobility business unit had secured contracts worth over $10 billion to build advance air mobility components, signifying the growth of AMM as a viable commercial sector for years to come. David has been with Honeywell for over 18 years. Prior to his current role in the Advance Air Mobility Unit, David held several key leadership positions within the company, including Vice President and General Manager for the Power Systems business of Honewell and Vice President of EMEAI Airlines.  He also led the Honeywell Aerospace Trading (HAT) business, as well as roles leading Aftermarket strategy and IP Licensing. Prior to joining Honeywell David had roles in Engineering and IP strategy within the commercial automotive market.  He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the WP Carey school at Arizona State University. David also holds a number of patents on innovative automotive safety technology and has published cooperative research in the field. In 2018, I was invited to be a speaker at a conference in the Midwest. Before I got on the stage to present my keynote, the session before me was talking about a new concept that I remember briefly hearing about as a student at Embry-Riddle, Advance Air Mobility (AAM). The speaker mentioned how AAM is the future of aviation, and that it will revolutionize air travel as we know it. AAM is known as the development, integration, and utilization of new airborne transportation systems, typically involving electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, drones, and other innovative aerial vehicles. These systems are designed to operate in urban, suburban, and rural environments. Since that conference in 2018, so many developments have transpired in this sector. Key Features of the AAM sectors include; eVTOLs: These are aircraft that can take off and land vertically like a helicopter but transition to forward flight like a plane, predominantly powered by electric propulsion.Urban Air Mobility (UAM): A subset of AAM focusing on urban environments. UAM seeks to alleviate ground traffic congestion by taking advantage of the airspace above cities.Decentralized Infrastructure: Instead of large central airports, AAM emphasizes smaller vertiports or landing pads scattered throughout urban and suburban areas.Autonomous Operations: While initial operations may have human pilots, the goal for many AAM solutions is to eventually operate autonomously, which will require advanced autonomous flight systems and robust air traffic management solutions. The AAM sector on a global scale was valued at $8.2 billion in 2022. It is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 20% by 2032 with a valuation to reach about $68.1 billion. Furthermore, investments in AAM have reached $4.8 billion in 2021, with new innovative companies launching each year in pursuit of the next successful eVTOL to hit the market. Specifically, there are over 200 companies globally in the race to develop eVTOL aircraft. The primary driver in the AAM sector is the Urban Air Mobility market which is projected to rise from 3.8 billion to 38.5 billion by 2030. In terms of women in this sector, McKinsey & Company shared on its blog this year how women are advancing in Future Air Mobility (FAM). Here are a few key points the blog shared. Sustainable aviation saw the biggest improvement in gender diversity, with the number of women and nonbinary people increasing from 13 percent to 18 percent.Other segments, including manned advanced air mobility/eVTOL vehicles and small drones, showed smaller gains.Companies that develop supersonic and hypersonic technology regressed, with the number of women and nonbinary people falling from 23 percent to 20 percent, although the small sample size means that the departure of a few senior leaders could sway the numbers in a meaningful way.Among regions, North America has the most diverse leadership teams in both gender (20 percent female or nonbinary) and ethnic diversity—defined as the non-majority group in a company's home country (18 percent).Technical roles have seen the biggest increase in diversity for both genders (going from 5 percent to 14 percent female or nonbinary) and people from ethnic minorities (going from 12 percent to 16 percent).Despite this progress, women and nonbinary people remain significantly underrepresented in technical roles at FAM companies, as they are in many other industries. Our special guest who will launch us into season five of the AVIATE with Shaesta podcast is Elan Head, a familiar voice in AAM. How is Texas Advancing Urban Air Mobility? Michael Hill is CEO and Founder of Cumulus Technologies, a drone technology company based in the Dallas / Ft. Worth area.  Michael is one of the top subject matter experts in the areas of Advanced Air Mobility and their integration on the land, in the air and at sea. He is a Part 107 Pilot with over 1,980 hours of flight time, a consultant helping companies use Drones and Ai to create safer, more efficient working environments and has helped NASA and the FAA develop Unmanned Traffic Management protocols for our National Airspace. In 2021, the Texas Legislature passed SB 763 – which established a new committee charged with identifying potential changes in state regulations  needed to facilitate the development of Urban Air Mobility operations and infrastructure in Texas.  The committee must report its finding and recommendations Texas Transportation Commission and legislature by Sept. 1, 2022. Michael is a member of the Texas Urban Air Mobility Advisory Committee and has been working with other committee members, industry leaders and the Texas legislature in implementing SB 763. In this edition of the Drone Radio Show, Michael talks about SB 763 and the Urban Air Mobility Advisory Committee, the efforts by the State of Texas and the North Central Texas Council of Governments to promote urban air mobility, and how Texas is positioning itself to be a leader in advance air mobility systems.
