Chris and Jonathan talk to Michelle Cohen, MD, CCFP, FCFP, an assistant professor at Queen University's Department of Family Medicine and a staff physician at Lakeview Family Health Team. Dr. Cohen provides gender-affirming care and is here to dispel myths surrounding trans people, especially the panic around the mistaken idea that children are being rushed to transition. If you have a child who is questioning their gender identity, make sure to listen to this episode before reading what the media typically reports on trans issues. Of note, the “1 Million March for Children” is scheduled to take place on September 20th across Canada. It is part of our current anti-trans panic, with the organizers claiming to “peacefully protest against the push for LGBT ideology in schools.” (2:10) What is gender-affirming care and how easy is it to access? The Provincial election is now three weeks away. Do you consider ‘gender parity' when you are looking at choosing a political party? We speak with Shari Graydon, CEO of Calgary-based think tank “Informed Opinions” on the importance of gender parity, and what can be done to even the playing field for women entering politics. Are you looking to make some healthy changes to your diet? Maybe it's best to leave the ‘fad diets' and latest ‘trends' behind and pay a visit to your family doctor. We discuss the resources available and first ‘steps' to take toward making such a change with Dr. Ted Jablonski, our on-call family physician. Finally, whether we know it, or not, we all carry some ‘unresolved pain' with us from childhood to adulthood. We talk about how to face these past issues that may be hindering us from growth, with Dr. Charysse Johnson, Psychotherapist and ‘Mindfulness Practitioner'.

Women in Canada make up less than a 1/3 of elected officials and that's bad for everyone, and yes that means men too. Having women in elected positions leads to more inclusive and equitable representation, diverse perspectives, and better overall governance, ultimately benefiting society as a whole. Shari Graydon, founder of Informed Opinions is committed to changing our political landscape and has launched balanceofpower.ca to help women attain power to drive positive change in their communities and improve the lives of more Canadians. I am thrilled to share a new partnership at What She Said with Care to Know. Care to Know.ca is a free resource where Canadians receive the latest health information, updates on new and existing treatments and advice from Canadian doctors via email. Over the next six months we'll take a closer look at seasonal allergies and asthma, skincare, diabetes, weight management and menopause but today we're going to share how caretoknow works with Dr. Christine Palmay so you can stop going down rabbit holes with Dr. Google. Anne Brodie is back with another big Saturday night at the movies and this week Kiefer Sutherland is back in Rabbit Hole, a new series on Paramount, Gabriel Basso stars as a low-level FBI agent pulled into non-stop action in Netflix's new The Night Agent, Director Jean-Christophe Klotz's thrilling history of Hollywood's part in bringing Nazi war criminals to justice in Filmmakers for the Prosecution, an adaptation of Sandra Schulberg's Monograph and an urgently important documentary. Next up, Anne is back with an interview with Julian Assange's Dad and brother, John and Gabriel Shipton. Julian is perhaps The most famous hacker publisher in the world and remains in London's tough Belmarsh prison awaiting possible extradition to the US to face trial for espionage. If convicted, he faces 175 years in prison. His crime? Leaking videos of US military war crimes against Iraqis, provided to him by soldier Chelsea Manning and published on WikiLeaks. Assange's father John Shipton, and brother Gabriel continue to lobby for his release citing freedom of the press as Assange's mental and physical health continues to deteriorate. Don't miss this interview. I love a great whodunit, which is why I was so thrilled to catch up with Amy Stuart, author of the newly released A Death At the Party from Simon & Schuster. Amy joins me to share how she kept the pace non-stop in this day in a life story that will have you on the edge of your seat and guessing to the bitter end who the victim will be. Finally, food waste in Canada remains a huge problem, in fact, Canada is the worst in the world for throwing away food. Think about that. Our small little nation is #1 for all the wrong reasons. Part of the problem are those best before dates which muddy the waters for consumers about food safety. Lori Nikkel, CEO of Second Harvest joins me to clear the air.

We are now in an election cycle with elections next week for municipal officeholders and school board members, and next year for president and Congress. How well are citizens prepared to play the role democracy assigns to them in making considered judgments when casting a vote? Walter Lippman, a long-time columnist and author of books on public opinion and governing, worried most citizens are unprepared. His view was that people live in the real world, but think in an imagined one. People are willing to admit there are two sides to a question, but they do not believe there are two sides to what they regard as “fact.” As the late Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan said, you are entitled to your opinions but not to your own facts. In a political system such as ours, people can be expected to act on behalf of themselves and others, but how can that be if they are out of touch with reality? Dr. Amanda Parriag is the president of an Ottawa-area organization called Media Action. It was created to respond to the sexism and bias that many believed were misrepresenting women in various forms of media including advertisements. The organization now runs workshops, through their program, Informed Opinions, aimed at teaching women how to write Op Ed. pieces to ensure their ideas and opinions are heard in the media. Media Action also runs a program called Ask Women Anything, where female experts on a variety of topics are invited to speak. Topics range from indigenous issues to the Me Too movement. Amanda is optimistic about the future, saying the girls growing up now are fearless, inspiring, and are taking the world by storm.

On this week's show Hilary Young, Robert Danay and Oliver Pulleyblank take a deep dive into the wide word of pardons. They discuss the recent request for a pardon by Robert Latimer, the propriety of mass pardons for the simple possession of cannabis and the right to be forgotten. In obiter dicta, Oliver recommends a technique for reading quotes in court that he picked up from the Hardcore History podcast, Rob recommends a story about the effect that Madam Justice Abella may have had on a recent controversial law in Israel and Hilary recommends Informed Opinions (https://informedopinions.org/), an organization that trains women to make their ideas more accessible to a broader audience and increase their impact.
