It's Wednesday, April 30th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Nigerian Muslims killed 7 Christians Boko Haram terrorists attacked a Christian community in northeast Nigeria on Monday. The Muslim militants killed seven Christians, injured many more, and destroyed homes and church buildings.  One local believer told Morning Star News, “Kwaple village in Chibok Local Government Area is under attack from Boko Haram terrorists. Please pray for God's intervention.” Indeed, pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ in Nigeria. The African country is ranked seventh on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most dangerous to be a Christian.  In John 15:20, Jesus said, “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also.” Only 62% of Americans support free speech Pew Research released a new survey on free expression around the world. Across 35 countries, a majority of adults in most of those countries believe that freedom of the press, freedom of speech, and freedom on the internet are very important.  However, adults are much less likely to say they actually observe complete freedom of expression in their country.  Sadly, in the United States, support for free speech has declined from 71% in 2019 to 62% today.  European power outage crippled Spain, Portugal, and France A massive power outage hit Europe on Monday, affecting Spain, Portugal, and parts of France. The unprecedented failure grounded flights, froze trains, and disrupted cell service. Thankfully, much of the grid was restored yesterday. Experts ruled out sabotage and cyberattacks as the cause. However, Spain's electric operator Red Eléctrica  did identify two incidents of power generation loss that were likely from solar power plants, reports Reuters.  California's economy grew by 6% California's gross domestic product reached $4.1 trillion last year. That put the Golden State ahead of Japan, making it the world's fourth-largest economy behind Germany, China, and the U.S. as a whole. In addition, California's economy grew by 6% last year, faster than the other top four economies. Tennessee doctors and nurses not forced to do abortions Last Thursday, Tennessee Republican Governor Bill Lee signed the Medical Ethics Defense Act into law. The law protects medical professionals from participating in practices that violate their conscience like abortion. Erica Perdomo, an attorney with Alliance Defending Freedom, testified before the Tennessee legislature. PERDOMO: “There are doctors who practice medicine, consistent with a pro-life worldview, in which an abortion is never medically necessary.” Her colleague, Greg Chafuen, praised the legislation. He said, “Patients are best served by health care professionals who are free to act consistent with their oath to ‘do no harm.' … Tennessee's Medical Ethics Defense Act ensures that health care professionals are not forced to participate in procedures that violate their ethical, moral, or religious beliefs.” IBM defends free speech IBM recently changed its advertising policies to back down from censorship in favor of free speech.  Alliance Defending Freedom is leading a coalition that brought about the changes at IBM and other major companies like PepsiCo, Mastercard, and Johnson & Johnson.  Jeremy Tedesco with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “We hope every company follows IBM's example and recommits to doing its part to protect freedom of speech and thought in our nation and throughout the world.” IBM investing $150 billion in America Speaking of IBM, the tech company announced Monday that it plans to invest $150 billion in the U.S. over the next five years. This includes $30 billion for research and development of mainframe quantum computers.  IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna spoke to Fox Business about the investment.  KRISHNA: “We are extremely focused on leveraging American ingenuity and American innovation. “When I think about artificial intelligence, quantum computing, mainframe computers, this Research and Development investment, coupled with all of the associated manufacturing, is going to allow the United States to be at the front of all those three technologies.” Religiously unaffiliated in U.S. at 22% now And finally, Gallup released a new survey on religious preferences in the United States. Protestant identification was 45% last year, down from 57% in 2000. Catholic identification is 21%, down from 25%. And identification with no religion at all is 22%, up from 8% over the same time period.  Although the number of religiously unaffiliated Americans surged from 2000 to 2017, their growth has plateaued in recent years. Hebrews 10:23-24 says, “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, April 30th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. It's Thursday, March 13th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Pakistani police rescue abducted 12-year-old Christian girl A 12-year-old Christian girl in Pakistan reunited with her parents last week after being abducted by a Muslim neighbor. Saba Shafique was abducted back in January and forced to marry her abductor.  Saba was beaten and locked in a room until police recovered her. She is glad to be reunited with her family. Sadly, such forced marriages affect hundreds of girls from religious minorities in the Islamic country every year, reports Morning Star News. Pakistan is ranked 8th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian.  Devout British Christians gave 11% of income to charity The Christian charity Stewardship released their latest Generosity Report on Christians in the United Kingdom. The study found the average monthly giving for Christians equated to 5% of their income. That's twice the national average.  Christians who attend church and read the Bible at least once a week give even more, donating 11% of their income. That's almost five times the national average. The study also found such committed Christians experienced the most joy when giving compared to those who attend church and read the Bible less frequently.  2 Corinthians 9:7 says, “So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver.” Stocks rose with lower inflation In the United States, U.S. stocks rose yesterday after February's inflation report showed signs of slowing price increases. The consumer price index rose 0.2% last month, putting February's annual inflation rate at 2.8%. That's down from 3% in January.  Stocks rallied at the news after a couple of days of losses. Markets have fluctuated in the face of President Donald Trump's tariff escalations with countries around the world.  However, Trump did not rule out a recession for the U.S. during an interview on Fox News. Instead, he signaled a period of transition. TRUMP: “There is a period of transition, because what we're doing is very big. We're bringing wealth back to America. That's a big thing. And there are always periods of -- it takes a little time. But I think it should be great for us.” Chase will no longer discriminate against conservatives, Christians A major bank has changed its Code of Conduct to protect against political and religious debanking.  JPMorgan Chase stated in a letter last week that it will not discriminate based on religious affiliation or religious views. Conservative and religious groups have complained in recent years that Chase has canceled their banking services.  Following the updated Code of Conduct, Jeremy Tedesco with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “This is a major victory for free speech and religious freedom in the marketplace. … We expect Chase's new policy to set the standard for the rest of the financial industry.” Pro-abortion activist paid $10,000 fine for vandalizing pro-life center Officials in Florida have exacted a $10,000 fine from a pro-abortion activist associated with Antifa.  Gabriella Oropesa worked with several other activists to vandalize pro-life pregnancy centers in the Sunshine state in 2022. They spray painted threatening messages on the facilities like “YOUR TIME IS UP!!” and “WE'RE COMING for U.” Oropesa also faces up to 10 years in prison.  Dept. of Education to cut staff by 50% The U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday it plans to reduce its staff by 50%. Impacted staff will be placed on administrative leave starting March 21. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said, “Today's reduction in force reflects the Department of Education's commitment to efficiency, accountability, and ensuring that resources are directed where they matter most: to students, parents, and teachers.”  This will cut the Department's workforce from 4,133 workers to 2,183 workers.  9% of Americans have interactive spiritual relationship with God And finally, Dr. George Barna  released a new report on Americans minimizing the role of God in their lives. Only 40% of U.S. adults believe God exists or influences human lives. Sixteen percent say God is the most important element of their lives, and 9% say they have an intimate and interactive spiritual relationship with God.  Among self-identified Christians, only 20% describe their relationship with God as intimate and interactive and nearly one-third do not believe He is actively involved in every aspect of their daily existence.  In Revelation 2:4-5, Jesus said, “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Thursday, March 13th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. Artificial intelligence technology is making its way into more areas of daily life. But there are still many unknowns about AI, including major legal questions about the ways the technology should be governed, and which AI-generated speech is, or is not, protected under the First Amendment.  Generative AI, in its most basic form, is “trained on vast amounts of data,” according to Ryan Bangert, senior vice president of strategic initiatives at Alliance Defending Freedom. “It ingests petabytes of information in order to learn how human language works, in order to understand how it is that human syntax grammar is structured, and then it predicts what comes next.” Generative AI is “not a mind, it's not a consciousness, it's not a human being,” Bangert says. “It's a piece of software, a very complex piece of software, that's fulfilling an algorithmic function.” Therefore, he adds, generative AI is “not a First Amendment rights-bearing entity.” In their new paper, “The Ghost in the Machine: How Generative AI Will Test the Bounds of the First Amendment,” Bangert and Jeremy Tedesco, senior vice president of corporate engagement at Alliance Defending Freedom, parse the relationship between AI and the First Amendment.  Bangert and Tedesco join “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss the fight to protect free speech amid rapidly changing AI technology use.

Alliance Defending Freedom is the leading defender of religious and political speech protection in our nation's legal system. With fifteen Supreme Court victories and over 70 assists since 2011, no other organization has done more in the courts to protect religious freedom. But several years ago, ADF became a victim of cancel culture at Amazon, which kicked the organization out of being eligible for customers to direct gifts on its Smile program. ADF realized that there was another, perhaps even greater, threat to free speech than government – large corporations. In response, they launched a corporate engagement operation, headed by Jeremy Tedesco, and an objective scoring system called the Viewpoint Diversity Score Business Index, www.viewpointdiversity.com. ADF recently released the third annual edition of this index and Jeremy Tedesco joined us to talk about the trends he has seen. While victory is probably far in the future, progress is being made right now, with more companies being covered by the index, more companies participating in the survey and some companies seeing significant improvements. Tedesco also gives helpful advice and an inspiring call to ordinary shareholders to join the fight. Momentum has shifted our way, and Tedesco invites those who are concerned about “woke capitalism” to move from impotent outrage to engagement and influence.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's Wednesday, January 10th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Biden failed to include India and Nigeria on naughty list The U.S. State Department released its annual report on religious freedom violators last Thursday.  The report listed Countries of Particular Concern which included Myanmar, China, Iran, North Korea, Russia, and Saudi Arabia.  However, religious freedom groups are criticizing the Biden administration for not including India and Nigeria on the list. McKenna Wendt with International Christian Concern said, “During the Christmas season, hundreds of Christians were slaughtered in Nigeria. And in India, anti-conversion laws, mob violence, and extremist ideology continues to suppress the Christian community. ICC stands in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Nigeria and India, and we call on the U.S. State Department to hold these governments accountable.” Hebrews 13:3 says, “Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body.” World economy slowing again The World Bank announced it expects global economic growth to slow in 2024 for a third year in a row. The institution projects the economy worldwide will grow by 2.4 percent this year. That's down from 2.6 percent last year, 3 percent in 2022, and 6.2 percent in 2021. The economic stagnation will hit developing countries the hardest in the wake of the pandemic era.  The World Bank also projected slower economic growth for the United States at 1.6 percent this year, down from 2.5 percent last year. America's $34 trillion of debt Speaking of the U.S. economy, the federal government's total debt crossed $34 trillion for the first time at the end of 2023. The new record comes just three months after the government crossed the $33 trillion threshold. Federal deficit spending has surged under recent administrations, both Democrat and Republican. Over the last year, credit rating agencies have downgraded their outlook on the government's credit standing. Proverbs 22:7 says, “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.” Apple vs. the Bible The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission ruled that Apple Inc. cannot exclude a free speech resolution from its 2024 annual meeting. The American Family Association put forward the resolution over concerns that the tech company is “limiting content access within its online services based on viewpoint and that it does so based on vague and subjective terms of use.” Apple has used its vague guidelines to ban content that promotes Biblical views on marriage and sexuality.  Jeremy Tedesco with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “Major corporations like Apple shouldn't be hiding from shareholders who are concerned about the company's impact on free speech.” U.S. Supreme Court hears Trump Colorado ballot case Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case over Colorado's removal of Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot. Last month, Colorado's Supreme Court ruled that the former president was disqualified from the office based on the insurrection clause in the Constitution's 14th Amendment in Section 3. Trump appealed the decision. The U.S. Supreme Court said it would fast-track the case with oral arguments scheduled for February 8th. Trump is also appealing a similar decision in Maine to keep him off the ballot there. Will Missouri remove Biden from ballot? Meanwhile, in Missouri, a state official has indicated he may try to remove President Joe Biden from the ballot. Last Friday, Missouri's Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft  spoke out on X.  He tweeted, “What has happened in Colorado & Maine is disgraceful & undermines our republic. While I expect the Supreme Court to overturn this, if not, Secretaries of State will step in & ensure the new legal standard for @realDonaldTrump applies equally to @JoeBiden!” Ashcroft also told NBC News, “If Democrat states are saying we're not going to let these Republicans run, you bet you're going to see the same thing happening from Republican states.” Pro-abortion Arkansas constitutional amendment doesn't make cut And finally, a pro-abortion constitutional amendment has failed again to make it onto the ballot in Arkansas.  The state's Republican Attorney General Tim Griffin already rejected another version of the amendment last year. The measure would have allowed the killing of unborn babies in certain cases. Griffin wrote that the amendment included language that was unclear and could mislead voters. Arkansas currently bans abortion in almost all cases.  Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Wednesday, January 10th in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. “ESG is the progressive, political agenda packaged for private, publicly traded corporations,” says Jeremy Tedesco, the Senior Vice President of Corporate Engagement for Alliance Defending Freedom. According to Tedesco, ESG initiatives bypass regular political processes and our constitutional structure, which makes them a lot more difficult to hold accountable through legal measures. And, says Tedesco, the goal is not to simply spread things such as DEI throughout America, but actually throughout the entire world. Tedesco went into greater detail beyond the broad scope of ESG and DEI by highlighting proxy advisory firms “Glass Lewis” and Institutional Shareholder Services, also known as ISS as two organizations that are largely unknown, but wield significant influence behind the scenes in American culture. And so he won that case, 7 to 2," says Tedesco, today's guest on "The Daily Signal Podcast.""But then Colorado turned around right after that and considered another complaint against him, this time based on a gender transition cake that someone asked him to create. Eventually Colorado got the message and dismissed that complaint," Phillips' lawyer says, "but then the private citizen involved in filing that complaint filed a private lawsuit against Jack. And so that's why he's in court now."Listen to the full interview on “The Daily Signal Podcast” or read a lightly edited transcript below. We also cover these stories:The Biden administration reverses a Trump administration policy on health care and transgender individuals. Titolo originale: Non sei politicamente corretto? Allora puoi ritrovarti nella lista degli odiatoriFonte: Radio Roma Libera, 6 Febbraio 2021Pubblicato su BastaBugie n. 704

Woke Capitalism Targets Religious Freedom

The BreakPoint Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 4, 2019 4:19

Usually, infringements on religious freedom come from the government: legislatures, regulatory agencies, or local agents of inquisition like the Colorado Civil Rights Commission. But emerging and serious threats to religious freedom are also coming from the private sector. An obvious example is the workplace. I've talked for months now that Christians need a “theology of getting fired.” You might be great at your job (and you should be as a Christian), but you might also face pressure to affirm and support your employer's political agenda, one that has little to do with the company's business model or strategic goals. Many companies today face an incredible amount of pressure by outside advocacy groups, especially pro-LGBT organizations. The influence of these groups, especially the Human Rights Coalition, is incredible, and they reach well beyond the workplace. Recently, I hosted a Colson Center webinar with Jeremy Tedesco of Alliance Defending Freedom to discuss the influence of these LGBT advocacy groups, including new attempts to restrict the ability of religious groups to raise money. The main strategy comes by weaponizing so-called “hate group lists.” Once groups like ADF are designated as “hate groups” by the Southern Poverty Law Center, corporations are pressured to cut ties with any and all organizations that bear the scarlet “H.” Consider the “Amazon Smile” program. When participants in the program make a purchase on Amazon, half-a-percent of the price of their purchase can be designated as a donation to the charity of their choice. Zero-point-five percent might not sound like much, but as of last fall, Amazon had donated more than $100 million to eligible charities through the Smile program. In response to outside pressure, Amazon now excludes any organization designated as a “hate group” from the program. So, ADF, the Family Research Council, and others are barred from “Amazon Smile.” That's a relatively minor example. As Tedesco told us on the webinar, activists and their corporate allies have even more effective strategies to accomplish their goals. For example, companies that process credit card payments are also pressured from doing business with anyone deemed a “hate group,” whether they are or not. Some of our close ministry friends have been refused services. If a ministry you love and support cannot find someone to process their credit card donations, that's a huge blow. A new strategy is to target “Donor Advised Funds.” These funds manage charitable donations on behalf of families, individuals, and organizations, carry along specific tax benefits, and are offered by most of the major wealth management organizations. Essentially, they allow a donation to be made now, with the tax deduction, but distributed later according to the wishes of the donor. What many people who use donor advised funds fail to realize is that they actually surrender ownership of the assets they donate, and essentially become advisors as to how the funds will be used. Now there is now a move afoot to persuade those who offer these funds to exclude “hate groups” from receiving donations. All it would take is a stroke of a pen, and the donor couldn't designate his funds to the groups that he wants to give to anymore.  Thankfully, there are Christian based donor advised funds through groups whose Christian worldview lines up with people of orthodox faith. If you carry a donor advised fund with someone else, it may be time to consider transferring to these providers. Two of these providers, National Christian Foundation and Waterstone, joined Tedesco and me on the webinar. And you can listen to a recording of that webinar by coming to our website: BreakPoint.org Look, these challenges are a moving target and they are becoming more serious and more challenging by the day. I don't know if you noticed, but there were a lot more rainbow flags flown by corporations during Pride Month this year. This new “woke capitalism” means that corporate America could be an even bigger threat to religious freedom than anything coming out of the halls of government.

People of faith and our institutions have come under increasing attack in recent years from secular sources. Secular forces are often resorting now to litigation when they fail to achieve their legislative goals. These challenges have come largely from pro-abortion, atheist, and homosexual pressure groups. Many of these cases have been working their way up the judicial ladder, and some have come to the United States Supreme Court, and will be heard in the current session will began on the first Monday of this month. Jeremy Tedesco, senior counsel and vice president of U.S. Advocacy and Administration for Alliance Defending Freedom, talks about these cases on today’s Free to be Faithful.

There are a lot of events that Colorado cake artist Jack Phillips will not use his artistic talents to promote. He won’t design Halloween cakes, or lewd cakes for bachelor parties. Cakes that disparage others are out of the question. He tends to think along the lines that if he would not design it and put it in the showcase in front of his granddaughter, then that’s a request he needs to turn down. As a Christian, Jack cannot use his artistic talents to promote all messages or events. And he shouldn’t have to. No creative professional should be forced to create custom work to celebrate an event with which they disagree. So, when a same-sex couple walked into Jack’s store and asked him to design their custom wedding cake, he had to politely decline. Because he believes what the Bible says about marriage, that it is the sacred union of one man and one woman, he did not feel he could design something that celebrates anything contrary to that. He did, however, offer to sell them anything else in his store. Despite that, they sued him. Alliance Defending Freedom has represented Jack all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and we will continue to defend him before the Court in the coming term. Jack will serve everyone, but he cannot promote every message. And he should have the freedom to do that. A government that can tell you what messages to promote, regardless of your beliefs, should concern us all. This week on Freedom Matters, we sat down with Jack and ADF attorney Jeremy Tedesco to discuss the case.

It’s no secret that Christian artists are under attack. Secular and LBGT groups seek out and use government to punish Christian artists who refuse to create artwork celebrating what Christians consider sinful, such as gay marriage. Bakeries, florists, and other have been driven out of business and fined or threatened with prison. The situation in Colorado is especially grievous where not only can a Christian refuse to create art, but cannot even voice their religious objection to it. But Christians are starting to fight back. Graphic Designer Lorie Smith’s dream is to create websites for people celebrating their marriage. As a Christian, she cannot celebrate same-sex marriage. Smith is being proactive. Before she even opens her web design business, she asked Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) to challenge the restrictions. World Lutheran News Digest host Kip Allen speaks with ADF attorney Jeremy Tedesco who is handling the case.

In this episode Kevin talks with Jeremy Tedesco, Esq., a senior legal council for Alliance Defending Freedom who is currently representing Kelvin Cochran. In the United States of America in the 21st century, is it possible for a qualified individual to be fired from his job solely on the basis of his religious beliefs? We would all like to think that the answer is no, but this seems to be exactly what happened to Kelvin Cochran, former fire chief of Atlanta, GA. After having achieved the highest possible position for a fireman in 2009 (US Fire Administrator), and being named Fire Chief of the Year in 2012, Cochran was dismissed from his position in Atlanta in 2014. Why? For writing and self-publishing a devotional, completely separate from his job as fire chief, which stated his Christian perspective on marriage and sexuality. When the devotional was first brought to public attention, Cochran was suspended without pay, and an investigation revealed that he had not treated anyone unfairly on the basis of their sexuality. Yet he was still fired, because of his beliefs rather than his actions. How could he be treated in a manner so completely contrary to America’s principles of freedom? The truth is that as society’s esteem for religion (specifically Christianity) diminishes, attacks on religious freedom increase. Can our First Amendment rights be defended, or will they soon be a happy memory? Learn more about Kelvin Cochran’s case at AllianceDefendingFreedom.org, and consider contributing to this fine organization as it fights to defend your rights!
