Under andra världskriget tjänstgjorde hundratusentals kvinnor i Sovjetunionen i stridande förband. Bild: Den sovjetiska krypskytten Ludmila Pavlitjenko, Wikipedia.Musik: Rhythm of the Action av Jon Presstone, Soundblock Audio. Cocharelli – British Library, Cocharelli, Cuttings from a Latin Prose Treatise on the Seven Vices.
G.K. Chesterton observed in the early 20th century how Darwinism blurred the lines between science and philosophy. He warned against the “insane simplicity” of materialism, which, while logical, limits understanding to natural processes and denies the possibility of miracles. Chesterton argued that Christians, embracing both the natural and supernatural, hold a freer and more complete worldview. He critiqued Darwinism as speculative, pointing out its lack of concrete evidence and reliance on coincidence to explain complex features in nature. Beyond science, Chesterton saw Darwinism’s moral implications as dangerous—devaluing human life and paving the way for eugenics and cruelty. His sharp insights remain strikingly relevant today, as Lita Sanders illustrates through Chesterton’s enduring critique of flawed evolutionary philosophy.
Bild: Timothy Leary, familj och band på föreläsningsturné; State University of New York at Buffalo (1969) (Buffalo, New York). This week's Audio Drama Spotlight is The Heart Pyre. The Heart Pyre is an interactive epic fantasy audio drama where listeners can help decide how Rena's journey to find out what truly happened to her home town plays out. As she finds herself the only survivor of the fire that destroyed her town, she comes to doubt the Royal Council's report that the event was simply a tragic accident. What are the authorities hiding? Is she truly the only survivor? And why are there rumours about the old Gods again? The Heart Pyre is written and produced by Audrey Martin. The intro song is Lonely Dusty Trail by Jon Presstone.
In this episode, Justin and Bekah discuss the current state of the United Methodist Church. It is splitting due to a disagreement between conservative and progressive factions within the church over whether or not being gay/queer/a member of the LGBTQIA+ community is "compatible with a Christian life." Within the current Methodist Book of Discipline, it isn't. The discussion today is informative for those who want to know more, but may hit a raw nerve for those who are being affected. “My Name Is Sheba,” is the twice monthly fictional saga of iconic jazz/R&B artist, Sheba Hawkins, who rose from obscurity as an orphan, to superstardom, and the music she created along the way. Bild: Anders Chydenius, Museiverket, CC BY 4.0Musik: Springtime In The Meadow av Jon Presstone; Storyblocks Audio Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Agamemnon is the mightiest ruler in Greece, and father of the young princess Iphigenia. When an accident invites the wrath of the goddess Artemis, a dreadful sacrifice is demanded from Agamemnon: the slaughter of his own beloved daughter. A tragedy of anger, deception, and despair envelops the Greek camp at Aulis, with the Trojan War and the life of the princess hanging in the balance. A story from Greek mythology, based on Euripides' tragic play Iphigenia in Aulis (first performed in 405 BC, Athens), featuring: Iphigenia, Agamemnon, Clytemnestra, Achilles, Menelaus, Calchas, Orestes Original story by Konstantinos Christidis --- CREDITS: Music by Jon Presstone and Humans Win (www.storyblocks.com) Episode Thumbnail Image: Wall painting from Pompeii depicting the sacrifice of Iphigenia (1st century AD) WDS Logo Image: Kylix with Apollo playing the lyre and pouring a libation (c. 470 BC, Delphi Archeological Museum) --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

July is Disability Visibility month! To honor this, and the 32nd anniversary of the ADA (American's with Disabilities Act) being signed into law, Justin gives us a history lesson of the ADA. He was in the process of writing a book about how it came to be when the pandemic hit, and like it did with so many other things, disrupted his plans. But today he gets to share his knowledge of its history, its purpose, and what it is (and isn't) doing to help those with disabilities in America!Follow us on Twitter and Facebook!Donte to the Julian Way so that they can continue to support those with disabilities Here!Music is Tekilla Sunrise by Jon Presstone
“My Name Is Sheba,” is the twice monthly fictional saga of iconic jazz/R&B artist, Sheba Hawkins, who rose from obscurity as an orphan, to superstardom, and the music she created along the way. This episode is pretty heavy, as should be expected from the topic of Roe v. Wade being overturned. Justin and Rebecca talk about our feelings on it, as well as how this is a much more complicated issue then most people think. Abortion has been used, both in the past and in the present, as a way to get rid of disability, while the importance of bodily autonomy is incredibly important within the disability community. The overturning of Roe v. Wade also has implications for other rights to privacy (same sex marriage, contraception, etc.) that aren't "constitutional."We do not have answers, or necessarily the "right" view point. But we hope that we can be another place where you can grieve, rage, lament, and maybe better understand why this is action by the Supreme Court isn't just about abortion. Based on the essay, "On Seeing a Sex Surrogate" by writer and poet Mark O'Brien, the film explores Mark's journey of self discovery with sex alongside a sexual surrogate. Justin talks about his early dating life, noting how he felt seen when watching this movie. We also discuss the continued problem of non-disabled actors playing disabled characters; doesn't matter how good the film is, it needs to change. And of course look at Mark O'Brien's essay and poetry, both of which are real gift!
