Control your Mind so it Doesn't Control You Imagine Your Life when you practice smarter self-talk  Episode 164 (Terry is based in Denver, CO) In this conversation with Terry Tucker we explore: The self talk journey when facing horrible circumstances How to transition from blame to taking responsibility The positive energy from helping others How to listen to understand Communication lessons from hostage negotiation How to say constructive messages to self Start a new venture with baby steps Where to focus our energy when facing challenging conditions About our guest, Terry Tucker: Terry is a former SWAT Team Hostage Negotiator with the Cincinnati Police Department. He has trained with FBI's Hostage Negotiation Team. He's a cancer survivor.   He is the author of the book, Sustainable Excellence, Ten Principles to Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life. Get your copy of his book ----- Excerpts from this conversation with Terry Tucker: And then she looked at me and she said, well, well, Coach, what do you think my purpose is, I said, I have no idea what your purpose is. But that's what your life should be about finding the reason you were put on the face of this earth, using your unique gifts and talents and living that reason. So that was one conversation. And then I had a young man reach out to me from college on social media and asked me what I thought were the most important things, he should learn not to just be successful in his job or in business, but to be successful in life. And you know, George, I didn't, I didn't want to give them that, you know, get up early, work hard, help others kind of not that those aren't important. Those are incredibly important. And I wanted to see if I could go deeper with them. So I spent some time taking some notes and eventually had these these 10 thoughts, these 10 ideas, these 10 principles. And so I sent them to him. And then I stepped back and I was like, you know, I got a life story that fits underneath that principle, or I know somebody's life emulates this principle. So literally, I've been battling cancer for 11 years after I had my leg amputated. And before I started chemotherapy, I had a three or four month period where I was healing. I sat down at the computer every day, and I built stories and there were real stories about real people underneath each of the principles. And that's how sustainable excellence came to be. ----- Most people think with their fears and their insecurities instead of using their minds. And I know I've done that in my life, Georgia, and I've been like, Oh, I'd like to do this. Oh, wait a minute, you know, Am I smart enough? Or do I have enough information? Or what will people think about me? If I fail in this endeavor that's thinking with our fears and our insecurities, that's not thinking with our minds. And I always tell especially when I speak in person to young people always tell him if there's something in your heart, something in your soul that you believe you're supposed to do, but it scares you. Go ahead and do it. Because at the end of your life, the things you're going to regret are not going to be the things you did, they're going to be those things you didn't do. And by then it's going to be too late to go back and do. ----- ----more---- Your host is George Torok George is a specialist in executive communication skills. I have reinvented myself frequently over my professional career. After I graduated from college at The Citadel (where I played NCAA Division I basketball), I was employed in the Marketing Department at the corporate headquarters of Wendy's International in Dublin, Ohio. From there, I worked in hospital administration for Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. After getting married and moving to California, I became the Customer Service Manager for an academic publishing company in Santa Barbara. When our daughter was born and we moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, I became a police officer with the Cincinnati Police Department, where I was a SWAT Hostage Negotiator. In 2004, I obtained my Masters degree from Boston University. Following a family relocation to Texas, I started a school security consulting business and coached high school girls basketball. Each time I took on a new job, I had to develop new skills and faced different challenges. There was always a significant learning curve with every new position. But my greatest challenge began in 2012 when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, which presented on the bottom of my foot. By the time the cancer was detected, it had metastasized to a lymph node in my groin. Because my disease is extremely rare I was treated at the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center. I had two surgeries to remove the tumors, and after I healed, I was put on a weekly injection of the drug, Interferon, to help keep the disease from returning. I realize pain and discomfort can beat you to your knees and keep you there if you let it. But I also came to appreciate that I could use my hurting and anguish to harden my mind and make me more resolute. I was no better at dealing with pain and discomfort than the next person. But every day, I found a way to survive, with the knowledge that I would need to do it again the following morning. I wrote my book, Sustainable Excellence, Ten Principles to Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life to help people find and live their uncommon and extraordinary purpose. The ten principles outlined in the book will provide the bedrock necessary to form the foundation of unshakable beliefs and dedicated behaviors to reinforce your attitude, no matter how much pain you must endure or how many obstacles you must overcome. Sustainable Excellence is available on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08GLGVTVS), Barnes & Noble.com, (https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/sustainable-excellence-terry-tucker/1137534840), or anywhere you can get a book online. Unfortunately, my cancer experience hasn't ended with me conquering my disease. The melanoma that had plagued me for over five years returned in 2017, and my only treatment option was the amputation of my left foot in 2018. The cancer reemerged again in 2019, requiring multiple operations. In February 2020, an undiagnosed tumor fractured my tibia. My only remedy, in the middle of the COVID pandemic, was an above the knee amputation of my left leg. I also learned I have tumors in both of my lungs. But I refused to be a victim of this malignancy. I vowed to continue my fight. I knew the only way cancer could win is if I gave up or gave in to the disease, or it killed me. In addition to my faith, I use my 4 Truths to guide the decisions I make in my life. These 4 Truths are: 1. Control your mind, or it will control you. 2. Embrace the pain and discomfort we all experience in life and use it to make you a stronger and more determined individual. 3. What you leave behind is what you weave in the hearts of other people. 4. As long as you don't quit - you can never be defeated http://www.motivationalcheck.com

Terry Tucker is the founder of Motivational Check. He's here to share his unique and positive bent regarding the concepts of mindset and self-improvement. As a former NCAA Division I basketball player, SWAT Team Hostage Negotiator, and cancer warrior for the past ten years, he focuses on the healthy aspects of being sick by concentrating on his 4 Truths to help others lead their uncommon and extraordinary life.   KEY TAKEAWAYS As a hostage negotiator, Terry learned the value of trust in any relationship and that listening isn't just about hearing what's being said, it's about actually understanding what is being said.  As business people we set goals for our business, but we don't set personal values. When you can tie your goals to your personal values then the fact you believe it with all your heart will actually make those goals easier to achieve.  Terry's 4 Truths to help others lead their uncommon and extraordinary life are: 1. Controlling your mind, so it doesn't control you. 2. Embracing the pain and difficulty and using it to make you a stronger and more determined individual. 3. Understanding that what you leave behind is what you weave in the hearts of other people. 4. Remembering that as long as you don't quit, you can never be defeated. 60 or 70 thousand thoughts cross our minds every day. Every time you see a negative thought go by, stop and challenge that thought. When you're stopping those negative thoughts, your brain will eventually stop sending them.    BEST MOMENTS ‘Trust, learning, and emotion'  ‘You want to have core values and beliefs that you don't compromise'  ‘Take the cold bath bravely. Make yourself do unpleasant things so as to gain the upper hand of your soul' ‘Cancer can take all my physical facilities, but it can't take my heart, my mind, or my soul'   EPISODE RESOURCES  https://bit.ly/productizeebook1 https://www.motivationalcheck.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/terry-tucker-9b5605179/ https://www.sustainableexcellencemembership.com/   VALUABLE RESOURCES Leave your comments on the show's facebook community page: https://www.facebook.com/Buildvaluebychoice Get your free valuation here: https://bit.ly/get-free-valuation Get a 5-phase checklist to help scale your business. https://bit.ly/Business-ScaleUp-Checklist Podcast website: https://infhorizons.com/podcast/ Don't forget to subscribe to the podcast and share it.   ABOUT THE GUEST  Terry Tucker is the founder of Motivational Check. Terry Tucker  The Motivational Check I have reinvented myself frequently over my professional career. In 2004, I obtained my Masters's degree from Boston University. Following a family relocation to Texas, I started a school security consulting business and coached high school girls basketball. Each time I took on a new job, I had to develop new skills and faced different challenges. I took those weekly injections for almost five years before the Interferon became so toxic to my body that I ended up in the Intensive Care Unit with a body temperature of 108 degrees. Fortunately, expert medical care saved my life. The Interferon gave me severe flu-like symptoms for two to three days after each injection. I lost fifty pounds during my therapy, was constantly nauseous, fatigued, and chilled, my ability to taste food significantly diminished, and my body constantly ached. This misery went on for over 1,660 days! One thing I learned during all my pain and discomfort is that you have two choices. You can succumb to the debilitating distress and misery, or you can learn to embrace it and use it to make you a stronger and better human being. I chose the latter. Make no mistake, there were times I felt so poorly and was in so much agony that I prayed to die. Each day was a struggle to use my mind to override my body's apathy and distress. I realize pain and discomfort can beat you to your knees and keep you there if you let it. But I also came to appreciate that I could use my hurting and anguish to make me stronger and more resolute. We always hear books, podcast interviews that are full of discussions of positive mindset and successful lives. But we often underestimate the role of failure to build fulfillment (or extraordinary lives). Today we have a special guest with us Terry Tucker to give us great insights into how to deal with failure and how important is failure to become successful. About Terry Tucker Terry Tucker has been an college basketball player, a marketing executive, a hospital administrator, a SWAT Team Hostage Negotiator, a high school basketball coach, a business owner and most recently, a cancer warrior. He is also the author of the book: Sustainable Excellence, Ten Principles to Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life. Take aways from this episode with Terry Tucker: About success or excellence and the role of failure When you're successful, you're not failing. That's true in a lot of ways. But at the same time, if you think about where do we learn about failure where do we learn about being defeated? We start out in our lives with our caregivers, whether that's our mother or father, you know, grandparents or siblings or whoever's, you know, raising us we learned about failing and we learned very early on, winning is good, failing or losing is bad. I think the road to success is paved with failure. Anybody who has ever succeeded, if they say have never failed, I would be extremely skeptical about them saying that but people get devastated when they fail. They feel like there's something wrong with them, if they do. But that's not the point. The major takeaway from failing is the lessons you learn along the way. If you fail and then stop that you're a quitter, but if you fail and you learn, then you're a smart individual. Failure is the stepping stone to success We are great about starting down the path towards a goal, something we want to do something we feel good about. And then we butt up against an impediment to something gets in our way, and we can't get around it. We can't get over it. We can't get through it. And so we quit. We just don't quit. We've got to blame somebody. We got to find somebody to blame. It's like we got to blame our parents or our boss or our station in life. Very few people take personal responsibility for their own success and happiness. So, failure is a part of success. Trends about success in the society I see two trends in our society. And maybe because we have this crisis with COVID that people had the time to rethink a little bit about the life purpose and I saw the trend of that is constantly repeated in corporations is about having vulnerability vulnerabilities. So that the fact of being ourselves and being able to communicate in a genuine manner, things that we are good at we are bad. So, there is a trend and necessity that has come out of the fact that the way we work has changed drastically. The importance of mental health in in our society finally got a little bit of a spot so when we were all excited pre COVID Making money progressing in Indian society, we didn't realize it and suddenly we got a small break to think about our position in the world and we start thinking about this type of thing. So that has made that a lot of the mindset in incorporation has changed and the other trend that is almost kind of Its kind of the opposite is that we are always because of social media we are always comparing benchmarking ourselves versus what we think is successful others, so we look at someone in Facebook and we say, oh, this guy has a car ha a Ferrari has a beautiful house. This is the level of success. So, it's almost like if we had to redefine success, we need to be we need to create a moment of self-awareness to create to dig inside of us about what is important for us so that we can define our own measures of success. About the way we approach success We want to be successful. We want to develop goals that will lead us toward success. The problem is, we haven't defined our values yet. You can have goals while you can . I don't know if you're going to be successful in those goals. But if you can first before you set goals before you develop new year's resolutions before you do all the kind of stuff that we seem to do every year and you know, the department's got to have goals and you've got to have individual goals, and the company's got to have you know, a mission statement and all that kind of stuff. From there, I worked in hospital administration for Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. After getting married and moving to California for my wife's job, I became the Customer Service Manager for an academic publishing company in Santa Barbara. After our daughter was born and we moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, I became a police officer with the Cincinnati Police Department, where I was a SWAT Hostage Negotiator. Following a family relocation to Texas, I started a school security consulting business and coached high school girls' basketball in Houston. Each time I took on a new job, I had to develop new skills and faced different challenges. There was always a significant learning curve with every new position. However, my greatest challenge began in early 2012 when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called Acral Lentiginous Melanoma, which presented on the bottom of my foot. By the time the melanoma was detected, it had metastasized to a lymph node in my groin. Because my cancer is so rare, I was treated at the world-renowned MD Anderson Cancer Center. I had two surgeries to remove the tumors, and after I healed, I was put on a weekly injection of the drug, Interferon, to prevent the disease from coming back. I took those weekly injections for almost five years before the Interferon became so toxic to my body that I ended up in the Intensive Care Unit with a fever of 108 degrees. One thing I learned during all my pain and suffering is that you have two choices. You can succumb to the debilitating discomfort and misery, or you can learn to embrace it and use it to make you a stronger and better human being. I chose the latter. There were times during my Interferon therapy that I felt so poorly and was in so much agony that I prayed to die. Each day was a struggle to use my mind to override my body's apathy and distress. I realize pain and discomfort can beat you to your knees and keep you there if you let it. But I also came to appreciate that I could use my hurting and anguish to make me stronger and more resolute. I was no better at dealing with pain and discomfort than the next person. But every day, I found a way to survive, with the knowledge that I would need to do it again the following morning. I wrote the book, Sustainable Excellence, Ten Principles to Leading Your Uncommon and Extraordinary Life, to help others find and live their uncommon and extraordinary purpose. The ten principles outlined in the book will provide the bedrock necessary to form the foundation of unshakable beliefs and dedicated behaviors to reinforce your attitude, no matter how much pain you must endure or how many obstacles you must overcome. My hope is that people who read the book will lead a life of significance, as well as a life of success. Unfortunately, my cancer experience hasn't ended with me conquering my disease. The melanoma that had plagued me for over six years returned in 2017, and my only treatment option was the amputation of most of my left foot in 2018. The cancer reemerged again in 2019, requiring multiple surgeries. In February of 2020, an undiagnosed tumor in my ankle fractured my tibia. My only remedy was the amputation of my left leg above the knee. I am also being treated for tumors in my lungs. But I refused to be a victim of this malignancy. I vowed to continue my fight. I knew the only way cancer could win is if I gave up or gave in to the disease, or it killed me. In addition to my faith, I use my 4 Truths to guide the decisions I make in my life. These 4 Truths, which I have developed over my ten-year battle with melanoma, are: 1. Control your mind, or it will control you. 2. Embrace the pain and discomfort we all experience in life and use it to make you a stronger and more determined individual. 3. What you leave behind is what you weave in the hearts of other people. 4. As long as you don't quit - you can never be defeated. I chose my blog title, Motivational Check, for a simple reason. When I was a recruit in the Cincinnati Police Academy, it was a phrase any of our classmates could shout if they needed encouragement, motivation, or support. The class's response was to answer with a loud “84,” signifying our Recruit Class number and letting the person needing the reassurance know that we were all there for him or her. I understand what it is like to fight for your life and one thing I've learned is that as long as you don't quit, you can never be defeated. However, I came to understand the responsibility for altering your life is entirely up to YOU. Whining, complaining, and blaming others for your plight will not enhance your experience. Motivation alone will not cause you to progress. YOU have to want to make the change and commit to it every minute of every day. There are no days off when attempting to make significant and lasting improvements in your life. Just as fire strengthens metal and lifting weights until exhaustion grows muscle, use the pain and discomfort you are experiencing to harden your mind and make you a better and more determined individual. Keep fighting no matter how many setbacks you have or how bad you feel. Believe in yourself and know that there will be light at the end of your journey one day.    https://www.motivationalcheck.com
