Stage V engines are different, so how will they change the industry, and how can rental companies, in particular, benefit by investing in equipment powered by them? Peter Haddock asks all these questions and more to Dave Stollery of Perkins Engines in the latest edition of our Think Tank Series, supported by 3D Machine Control and Surveying specialist Leica Geosystems. Think Tank is all about how we should think about, in this case, getting the most out of the diesel or HVO fuel in the tank. So this episode is all about productivity, uptime, efficiency, and ultimately reducing carbon emissions by understanding the benefits of equipment using Stage V engines. As Peter discovers in this podcast, a Stage V engine complete with after-treatment needs to be run harder. And thanks to the research and development of Stage V technologies, the increases in engine performance can even reduce the size needed to power a machine. Knowing how to maintain Stage V engines is also important when delivering that vital uptime for rental fleets and end-users. So why not listen to Dave and Peter as they cover the topic in this in-depth podcast. How do we solve the skills shortage whilst increasing productivity and reducing CO2 emissions? These are just some of the key topics Peter Haddock discusses with Peter Bell, MD of housebuilding groundworks specialist, Bell Contracting onsite at the new AccXel Construction Training School. In this latest edition of our Think Tank Series supported by Leica Geosystems, Peter Bell talks about how the family business has created key relationships and partnerships with JCB and 3D machine control and surveying specialist Leica Geosystems to change the way the business operates. It's a process that has delivered significant benefits allowing Bell Contracting to grow whilst establishing itself as a key supply chain partner for some of the UK's largest housebuilders. Peter Bell: "The group has a turnover of around £90m, which is made up of three divisions, Bell Contracting, Bell Plant and Bell Homes. Our growth has accelerated dramatically over the last decade as we have changed the way in which we approach working with our customers, who are some of the major housebuilders in our region. "Those customers wanted more of a partnership approach, so we recognised we had to solidify our own approach to partnerships within our core supply chain and, in particular, the plant we use. So we started to work with our local JCB dealer, Holt JCB and JCB Finance to look at how we could manage our fleet and get the right equipment matched for the jobs onsite. "The aim was to develop a better approach to managing the movement of muck that was safer and more efficient. This also involved changing our methodologies and how team members worked together, from engineers to surveyors, site managers and operators. As part of this process, we created another more technically orientated partnership with Leica Geosystems, combining surveying, 3D modelling and machine control as one seamless delivery model. "It has been a revolution for our business. You know, I never believed that you would get 55 year old excavator drivers to buy into a machine control solution within 24 hours, but it happened to us. And the productivity of the jobs we are now doing is off the scale. We don't bang pegs in the ground anymore. Everything's built on a 3d model, and it's effectively plugged into the machine. "My excavator drivers and my foreman can actually physically see what they're actually trying to achieve right in front of them. And now they don't have to be close to the machine or climb into trenches anymore.” Thanks for listening to this episode of our Think Tank series, supported by Leica Geosystems the 3D machine control and surveying specialist. For our Bauma 2022 show special, supported by 3D machine control and surveying specialist, Leica Geosystems, host Peter Haddock talks to Mark Crawford, the Digital Plant Manager for leading UK Tier 1 contractor, Balfour Beatty. This episode was recorded at Hexagon Live in Las Vegas following the launch of new surveying and construction sector technologies. Mark joined Balfour Beatty in his new role during the pandemic and has been heavily involved in accelerating the digital roadmap for the business. Mark: "The digitalisation of the mobile plant sector is all about the connectivity of the plant itself, the available technology and what capability that can deliver for our clients." Mark is also heavily involved in the National Highways (the organisation that looks after the UK's motorway network) Connected and Autonomous Plant (CAP) Group, which works together to revolutionise the construction sector. Mark: "Working with the CAP group National Highways has set out a roadmap for the future delivery of projects, and this has influenced our own roadmap to deliver projects for the organisation. It has already led to us accelerating programmes that include the interlinking of telematics data from across our fleet and supply chain. "This includes how we move data from the office to the field, and the creation of our own digital toolset. Through collaboration and training across our business and supply chain we are ensuring everyone is now working on a consistent platform, with one version of the truth, so that we can ultimately achieve our Net Zero aims. And as a leading contractor, it is our goal to develop a roadmap that is capable of achieving the needs of all our customers. "For example, in order to support National Highways, we need to work a couple of years in advance to ensure the whole supply chain and technology is available, tested and ready to deliver. This requires us to walk back from the date of compliance with everyone involved and to challenge the OEMs and technology providers to have solutions available for our supply chain to adopt. So it's a complex and continuous process that will require investment in both equipment and people to deliver." The Blade Dive - Episode 37, we are joined by the “Silver Nail” Andreas Silbernagl. Growing up in the southwest end of the Italian Dolomite Alps, Andreas Silbernagl spent much of his time skiing and figured out quickly that after 8 years of school, that he wasn't interested in the classroom. Eventually, Silbernagl would earn several technician certifications and excavator/truck licenses, however, working outside and learning outside is still a priority to him. After enduring a period of life in the army as a member of the special forces airborne unit, Silbernagl spent time becoming familiar with ski resort operations and would land at Prinoth as the manager of all snow grooming equipment demo operations. Silbernagl has built world class ski racing venues, terrain parks and demoed equipment all over the world! Even though the most difficult thing for Andreas Silbernagl is being in the office, the customer contacts as well as the feedback is how Silbernagl justifies tackling any desk work. It's fair to say that the machine is the office space Silbernagl prefers, seeing as he is traveling 200 days a year. That being said, Silbernagl's choice of resort to visit or operate a machine is Whistler, Canada. Most recently Silbernagl has been building the World Cup race course at Cortina ISTA Ski Area, Italy. Episode 37 was such a fun conversation! We discuss the industry interpretation of the terms “operator” & “driver”, hand throttle usage compared to foot throttle usage while grooming. That nothing can replace seat time. The Leica Geosystems and just how helpful new technology can be, but that familiarizing yourself with any type of equipment is the first step. Again, I felt as if I was just catching up with a friend. Andreas Silbernagl believes in building trust amongst the crews of people he works with and values the transparency within conversation, as Silbernagl says, “there's no safe space, especially if you claim to be good, you'll be held accountable”. Enjoy! And if you're in the machine, Turn up the volume!Follow us on:https://www.instagram.com/thebladedive/https://www.facebook.com/thebladedive

THINK TANK SERIES EPISODE 4: Joining host Peter Haddock for the fourth in our new 'Think Tank Series', sponsored by our friends at Leica Geosystems, the 3D machine control and surveying specialist, is James Cadman, plant sector expert for the Sustainability Supply Chain School. In this special COP26 (Climate Change Summit) episode, James returns to the podcast to talk to host Peter about all of the challenges the industry faces to play its part in tackling climate change. They discuss what has changed in the industry since the Sustainability Supply Chain School Plant Charter was launched last year. They also talk about what the industry needs to do to reduce emissions by being better custodians of the environment and delivering social value to the communities in which we all work. James: "You only have to look at the recent announcement from the Construction Leadership Council in its 'Construct Zero Performance Framework' to see that we have some major milestones to reach. They stated that the framework wanted to reduce diesel plant onsite by over 70% by 2035. "That is a big task and not one we are going to solve overnight. But we can already see innovations coming to market and the rapid adoption of technology like 3D machine control. And there will be more technological advancements coming down the road. To meet these stringent targets, the answer is never going to be a one size fits all solution. We already have HVO biofuels, electric and now hydrogen advancements." It's a huge subject to tackle in a podcast, but we hope it will help listeners think about how they can play a role in delivering better environmental outcomes, both locally and globally. The Sustainability Supply Chain School also offers the industry a huge amount of resources free of charge to support learning, and you can access its library by visiting its website. They continue onto the subject of sustainability and how the business is driving change as it works towards transforming the 'Future of Rental' With over 2200 units set to be delivered by the end of 2021, the JCB deal is not just about numbers, it's about the fact that 92% of equipment is Stage V compliant or Electric. Each asset is also connected, as is its huge and diverse fleet of equipment. This means that customers can monitor asset performance through its 'Command Centre' customer portal and make both commercial and environmental decisions based on utilisation. In Andy's words, "We take sustainability very seriously, and we put our money where our mouth is. This JCB deal is not just a 'green' order. It's focused on safety and the provision of the data and information our customers want on the equipment they are renting from us. By showing customers the impact this equipment has on their sites, we help them be more productive and recognise when items are under-utilised. But most importantly, we build in safety to our equipment purchases and reports. For example, we have forward cameras on all the new JCB dumper, and everything is connected to the JCB Livelink telemetry solution through our Command Centre Portal." It's a fascinating insight into how Andy and the team see the 'Future of Rental' developing, and we hope you enjoy listening to it. And thanks to our sponsors, Leica Geosystems, for supporting the third episode in our new Think Tank Series. THINK TANK SERIES EPISODE 2: Joining host Peter Haddock for the second in our new 'Think Tank Series', sponsored by our friends at Leica Geosystems, the 3D machine control and surveying specialist, is Eric Desaulniers, President & CEO of graphite mining specialist Nouveau Monde Graphite. In this episode, Peter and Eric talk about a World first deal that Nouveau Monde Graphite has made with the mining team at Caterpillar to electrify its Graphite mine in Canada. It's an amazing story that will help to transform the mining industry into a greener and more environmentally productive sector. It will start with Caterpillar developing an entire fleet of battery-powered electric machines that will mine the graphite needed to create the batteries they run on. In turn, this will create a mining circular and green economy. What is also super exciting is that the power they use will be green as it comes from hydroelectric power generation fed into the site through a high voltage cable. Both companies will work together to develop and test the technology, sharing the journey to battery mining with other global players, so that everyone can benefit. The knowledge gathered will also support the next generation of machines as technology and the mine move forward. Peter and Eric even talk about the potential for hydrogen and how Nouveau Monde Graphite will be at the cutting edge of every advancement in the future. It is a fascinating subject we hope you will enjoy. You can also read an interview with Eric Desaulniers by Peter Haddock in the future December 2021 edition of Earthmovers Magazine. Michael is the Regional General Manager for Asia, Russia, and Australia for RPMGlobal (aka RPM). RPMGlobal (Runge Pincock Minarco) Holdings Limited operates as a holding company. The company, through its subsidiaries, provides mining software, enterprise mine management, planning, simulation, consulting, and training services. In this episode, Michael discusses his 12-year career path, which included six different jobs, his education, how RPMGlobal grew from a small business to a global corporation, and the changes in RPMGlobal's management that expedited the company's growth. Michael also shared his views on the impact of the pandemic on how the business delivers services and whether or not the change will be permanent. Episode Highlights: Michael was born in Brisbane and grew up there into a coal mining technology family. His parents started a small business that was called Tri-Tronics. The business pioneered a dragline monitoring system that went global. Michael worked for his parents business for 11 years, from 2000-2010. Leica Geosystems acquired his family business in 2003, and then Hexagon acquired Leica Geosystems in 2005. When Michael joined RPMGlobal, it was still a substantially sized business. It was publicly listed in 2008 and had done a number of acquisitions, growing the software side of the business. Still, primarily it was a consulting business and globally had some seriously good engineering solutions. RPMGlobal is a software provider in the mining space, focused on advanced mining. They have a long history of being involved in the industry for over 40 years and currently employing over 400 people. Around 2012, there was a change of management in RPM, which coincided with a change of investor profile, which went from a lot of smaller investors to large institutional investors that brought in the transformation of management. When you've got a very good team underneath you, it's more about validating and setting a good strategy rather than having to get into the day-to-day stuff. RPM have a customer success team working closely with their clients to ensure they are using their software to its best capability. They also have our technical pre-sales teams that will work with people during the engagement, when they're looking at the software and whether it's a good fit for them and the design of the solutions. In 2012 RPM bought around 35 new products to market and invested around $150 million. Sitting in front of people and talking and having interpersonal interaction solves issues quicker than when you're trying to do things via Zoom, Teams or any other virtual mode. THINK TANK SERIES LAUNCH EPISODE: Joining host Peter Haddock for the first in our new 'Think Tank Series', sponsored by our friends at Leica Geosystems, the 3D machine control and surveying specialist, are members of the new Lynch Plant Hire machine control division. They include Paul Keenan, Gez Bonner, Chris Kent and James King. In this episode, we talk onsite and in the studio to the team about the huge investment that Lynch Plant Hire has made to develop its new division and its impact on reducing carbon emissions whilst increasing productivity and efficiency. Its new division is rolling out 3D machine control throughout the Lynch Plant Hire fleet of equipment from excavators to dozers and more. It represents the most ambitious technology investment program in the companies history, which is set to position the business as a leader in the 'Connected Worksite' of the future. Paul Keenan has led the project to create the division: "Our vision when setting up the division was to have our own specification for machine control. Therefore, we have teamed up with Leica Geosystems and Trimble through its dealer Sitech UK & Ireland to connect every single one of our machines in the division. In doing this, we will offer our own remote support to customers, solving over 90% of issues without even going to the site. This allows customers to really take advantage of all the benefits the Connected Worksite delivers. We have then created our operator training school where each operator goes through one on one training to ensure they know how to use the machine control system before they get to a work site." "This will make our operators an invaluable part of the project team as they will be able to make the machine into a surveying tool, feeding back readings to our team for 'As-Built' data to be sent to the customers. We now have a 360-degree approach with everyone knowing what is happening and where we are against programme time." Peter Haddock added: "What has impressed me about the creation of the Lynch Plant Hire machine control division is its attention to detail. The team has gone through every element of technology, training, support and collaboration when putting this together. I see this approach as a blueprint for the delivery of a "Connected Worksite'. It is a vision to professionalise the industry and deliver great outcomes for the safe delivery of projects, whilst reducing emissions and the overall impact on the environment."
Construction plays a vital role in supporting economies for healthy societies. Today, the construction industry is in the midst of a disruptive revolution that changes how work is done, how construction professionals’ skills are developed, and how customers interact with construction organizations. Digital Construction encompasses many things, such as 3D digital modelling of entire construction sites and visualizing end-to-end construction project workflows. This evolution enables the industry to be more efficient, productive and accurate while also increasing safety. Christian Luttenberger, Vice President Heavy Construction at Leica Geosystems, discusses how Hexagon provides the means for digitalizing construction with construction solutions that integrate data to create seamless workflows and make entire projects safer and more efficient.
Combining measurements and imagery, laser scanners can capture any site, for example plants, buildings or crime scenes, to create a 3D digital model. The resulting model can be used for design and comparison purposes, to ensure site safety in inhospitable environments or as evidence in a criminal case, capturing every detail with to-the-millimeter accuracy. Hans Tuexsen, Terrestrial Laser Scanning Business Director, and Faheem Khan, Vice-president of survey solutions at Leica Geosystems, discuss how recent laser scanning technology in the last 12 months combine one-touch operation with portability and speed to deliver high levels of accuracy, automation and the ability to create 3D environments in a matter of minutes.
Today's surveyors are more than just surveyors - they are business professionals, digital connoisseurs, legal analysts, and all around renaissance men and women. In this episode, we speaking with Craig Hill from Leica Geosystems to discuss ever-evolving nature of the profession.
