I mean, over thirty top speakers, covering everything from digital twins to AI-powered photogrammetry? It's kind of mind-blowing. Dan Smigrod Absolutely. This is, without a doubt, one of the most intensive conferences for professionals in our field. Digital twins, for example, are going far beyond architecture now. They're being used in urban planning, industrial plants, even entertainment. It's—it's fascinating how the technology keeps expanding its reach. Eric Marquette Right. And I love the phrase 'information tsunami' they used to describe the event. Like, think about that session on "A.I. and Photogrammetry." That intersection is where things are getting super innovative. Dan Smigrod A.I.'s application to photogrammetry, it's really remarkable. Just imagine the speed and detail improvement in processing 3D models. We're talking tasks that used to take days, or weeks, now done in hours. And these models aren't just static—A.I. allows them to be predictive. Eric Marquette That's it. Predictive modeling! And, people always think of this stuff as being only for massive projects. But it's trickling down. Even smaller firms can now afford—and actually benefit from—A.I.-powered tools. Dan Smigrod Exactly. And this leads us to the keynote on digital twins—another massive shift. What's amazing about digital twins is their versatility. In factories, they simulate production; in retail, they're creating virtual tours of spaces. It's this blending of physical and digital worlds. Eric Marquette Like, how cool is that? You can take a space or system and make the virtual version so detailed that you're basically predicting the future. I mean, airports, theme parks, entire cities—they're building these twins and saying, "Here's how we optimize this." It's wild stuff. Dan Smigrod This is shaping up to be one of the must-attend conferences of the year. From deep-dives like "Reality Capture and GIS" to big-picture panels about collaboration. Eric Marquette It's a glimpse into the future of how we design, create, and connect through 3D innovation. 00:00 - IntroWe start out today reflecting on Lee Evey, an interesting guest from a couple former episodes (part one, part two). Then we get going on the conversation with today's guest, Matthew Byrd, who started the Reality Capture Network. Matthew gives us a run-down of his career preceding RCN and what drove him to start this conference. He talks about the lack of equipment knowledge he saw among reality-capture practitioners. Matthew already had a podcast and an active LinkedIn presence, so in 2020, he decided to be part of the solution. He and his team wasted no time. They set a date three months out and starting organizing. It went amazingly well. The vendor booths were full. Presenters came onboard. Clearly there was substantial interest. 12:02 - One of his favorite things to doThat was all four years ago. Since then, RCN has become one of Matthew's favorite things to do. It's not because of the cool tech, it's because of the satisfaction he feels in seeing people's problems being solved. Eddie asks Matthew to share about a cool airport project he'd worked on recently. This one was incredibly complex. The logistical complications (TSA, air-traffic control, etc.). Matthew's team used a wide range of tactics, all of which needed to be handled in new ways due to airport regulations. We discuss mobile-mapping drift issues, survey control points, deviation, and cross-referencing techniques. 21:23 - How scale affects reality-capture decisionsTyler asks about when reality capture is truly needed. Matthew discusses circumstances when accuracy matters. If he's forced to give a number, he said that a project of 10,000 square feet or more should involve reality capture. We discuss issues of liability and expertise–who should be handling this equipment and for which parts of the scan process should a true expert be called in. Eddie asks about mobile scanning devices and their accuracy. Matthew discusses big drones for survey-mapping solutions. He lists a number of other solutions for specific use cases. Matthew shares about some failed equipment designs from the past.He says that when people excitedly ask him what's next, he says he's really more interested in what's most reliable. 38:00 - Dealing with data–lots and lots of dataEddie asks for some insights for those who have gotten in over their head. One of the main suggestions Matthew shares has to do with buying the proper equipment for processing the massive amounts of data produced by scans.Scanning is about 20% of the job, he says. The other 80% requires hefty processing power. Matthew talks about the point when his team started building their own computers and eventually worked toward solutions provided by Dell. He also discusses the challenges of finding the right people to optimize these computers to handle the data. It's all about creative ways to employ the data, Matthew says. Almost every industry is finding ways to apply this technology. This means that some of the work is going to be outsourced. Matthew shares some insights about that.1:02:10 - How to keep them from staringEddie asks how to keep people on the jobsite from staring into the laser while it's doing its work. Matthew shares the history and humor of that challenge. We discuss software and the data-cleaning process. Matthew says that if the scan is done properly, filters can handle most of that. 1:08:35 - Megaphone messageMatthew's message: Don't be afraid of change. Pursue innovation. Try new things. Be the learner. On this episode of the Construction Leaders Podcast, CMAA's Nick Soto and Carly Trout chat with Stephen DeVito, director of technology at Procon Consulting and member of CMAA's Technology Committee. They talk about 360° Reality Capture and its effect on the construction management industry, costs of implementing such technology, and how it impacts site inspections.
This episode examines an innovative and integrated application of reality capture technologies that has been developed by IMEG to improve exterior lighting and security site assessments. Explaining the components, applications, and benefits of the ALL (Accurately Locating Light) Meter are guests Eric Vallejo, Director of Reality Capture and Geospatial Solutions, Ryan Searles, Security Consulting Group Leader, and Shanna Olson, Architectural Lighting Team Leader. The ALL Meter combines an illuminance meter, 3D camera, GIS, and drone photography to gather more accurate and robust data in a vastly more efficient and safer manner compared to conventional site assessments. “The traditional methodology for lighting assessments is to go out on site, obviously after dark, and about every five feet or so get down on the ground with a light meter,” says Olson. “You're also looking at other things, making observations, and taking photos as it gets later and later into the evening. At a particularly large job site recently it ended up becoming a little bit like Frogger in that we were repeatedly bending down, getting up, and moving around as cars and semi-trucks drove past us.” In addition to allowing the gatherer to remain standing, stay out of harm's way, and quickly collect more and better data to inform the design phase, the night drone photography enables stakeholders to visualize areas of poor visibility, lack of uniformity in lighting, and gaps in security. “You can see immediately where something's dark or well illuminated,” says Olson. “Owners can see and feel how it is to be in that space at night.”

In the fifth episode of Season 11 of the Propcast, host Louisa Dickins is joined by Jeevan Kalanithi, CEO at OpenSpace and Parker Mundt, Vice President of Platform at Suffolk Technologies. Episode Highlights: OpenSpace's founding story How Jeevan and Parker initially met and started working together The concept behind Suffolk Technologies and the companies they invest into Open Space's two products and the difference between them How OpenSpace overcame the challenges when scaling their products The broad challenges Parker sees startups facing with new products How product trends change based on geographical locations Parker's investment predictions for 2023-24 Current macro trends and what this will mean for those ready to innovate and be tech forward The firms involved in the Suffolk Boost Accelerator Program Companies that are creating innovative solutions for sustainability What steps Open Space are taking to reduce the ‘eight waste' on construction sites Resources: LMRE Global Recruitment and Search Consultancy LMRE YouTube Interviews PropTech Salary Report, LMRE 2022 Sifteo 3D Robotics Autodesk Suffolk Boost Accelerator Program Qflow Carbon Titles Shepherd Insurance Shout outs: Brittany Harris Jade Cohen Key Takeaways: They started a company and sold it, and sure enough, they were working on a capture technology with these new 360 cameras. When I heard about it, I was like, you know, who could really use this? Building. - Jeevan Suffolk has trialled over 180 different tech solutions. We pride ourselves in being a very forward thinking general contractor who has a deep desire to innovate within the construction space. - Parker We're building more and more stuff upon that. It all works because we have a simple capture product and I think we've captured something like 12 billion square feet, some big number. So it's a lot of data that allows us to make the system smarter and more useful for our customers. - Jeevan I think today we see a lot of companies that come in and maybe are naive or maybe just a bit out of touch with what some of the tech solutions in construction in particular would charge. And that can be a showstopper immediately, because the folks that you're selling to are still very focused on price and schedule, right? Those are the two main drivers in the construction industry. - Parker For us we're really focused on making sure that the founders feel comfortable at the valuation that they're at and not necessarily pumping it up just for the sake of having a larger valuation. - Parker We're at an innovate or die kind of portion of the life cycle right now where folks who are tech forward and are looking to see how they can do things better, faster, cheaper, safer, you know, those folks will emerge as the industry leaders, as a general contractor. - Parker We really prioritise reliability and speed and efficiency with our technology and we hope that allows our builder customers to do the same. - Jeevan About Our Host Louisa Dickins Louisa is the co-founder of LMRE, which has rapidly become the market leading global PropTech recruitment platform and search consultancy with operations across North America, United Kingdom, Europe and Asia-Pacific. Leticia found a lot of success but she also had a ton of challenges. When the massive company she worked for started to go under, she knew she needed to make a change. That's how she wound up making her way back to the family business and found the power she needed to be in control of her journey. Leticia shares the lessons she's learned from both failure and triumphs that you can use to be the boss in your biz. Can't-Miss Moments From This Episode:Celebrating a potential lay-off with a cruise: why Leticia didn't waste time waiting around for the axe to fall (this is a total power move, and you can do it too!) I like to do yoga with llamas, Leticia likes to pop champagne: why it's so important to take time to celebrate every moment in entrepreneurship, big and small. When things felt off with a client, Leticia trusted her gut to keep things out of the gray area. Her story is a brilliant example of why listening to your intuition (especially when you're new to biz) is more important than making the deal. Could failing a little more get you closer to finding success? When taking the big leap and NOT getting what you were going for can be a powerful advantage. What stories are you hiding from in your business? What happened when Leticia and I stopped hiding from who we are and embraced it fully (hint: what you find shameful might actually be a huge advantage). This one is jam-packed full of advice. Don't miss out - listen now!Leticia's Bio:With 25 years of Telecom experience, Leticia Latino went from working for Merrill Lynch and Telecom Giant Nortel Networks to accepting the challenge of extending the legacy of establishing her family business in the US back in 2002. Neptuno Group was originally founded by her father in 1972 in South America where they helped deploy some of the first Cellular Networks in the region and where they have built over 10,000 Towers. Leticia is a recipient of several recognitions including ‘Women in IoT' award by Connected Magazine, ‘Revolutionary CEO's' by Aspioneer and as one of this years Most Admired Women Leaders in Business in by CIO Look. She was recently received recognition as one of the “Outstanding Business Leaders of 2021” by Business Stalwarts. Combining measurements and imagery, laser scanners can capture any site, for example plants, buildings or crime scenes, to create a 3D digital model. The resulting model can be used for design and comparison purposes, to ensure site safety in inhospitable environments or as evidence in a criminal case, capturing every detail with to-the-millimeter accuracy. Hans Tuexsen, Terrestrial Laser Scanning Business Director, and Faheem Khan, Vice-president of survey solutions at Leica Geosystems, discuss how recent laser scanning technology in the last 12 months combine one-touch operation with portability and speed to deliver high levels of accuracy, automation and the ability to create 3D environments in a matter of minutes.
Delivering clean water and energy. Building iconic skyscrapers. Planning new cities. Restoring damaged environments. Connecting people and economies with roads, bridges, tunnels and transit systems. 3D printing is having an effect on the way things are made. This episode talks about what those things are, how it benefits us all and how you can get involved. Chris Dombos knows a thing or two about 3D printing, and he is also a massive FX nerd so we got on rather well. Having met him first at LA IMATS in Jan 2017 (I discovered he had some of the original Lost Boys moulds), it made sense to catch up when he came over to London recently. Of course, I figured bring the mic and make a podcast out of it. We recorded in a cemetery in London, so there are background noises. The whole gamut of life - cars, sirens, passing people, kids, birds in the sky, aircraft, wind – it’s all there in a place of the dead. It's all background, our audio is clear and we chatted about a number of great topics which matter to anyone who makes things. This includes: There have been a number of auctions as big FX shops started scaling down! This means that the larger shops have all but disappeared but more smaller operations opening up. Props Store London https://propstore.com/ Importance of design and the danger of generic, the process informing the look. Occulus Medium: https://www.oculus.com/medium/ Cost of CAD programs - the free and the fortunes. Digital sculpting revealing an artists lack of anatomical understanding, and how an understanding of form is essential to good sculpture regardless of the medium – clay or pixels. Costs or materials v digital process. It exists as a process, will only get better. The increased incident of joined up thinking, and how digital FX uses a team to create what would have been the job of one person, teams fitting together.
