Friends of the Rosary,Today is the Memorial Day of St. Pius V, a 16th-century Dominican friar and Pope, known for his intense devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and his promotion of the Holy Rosary.Often referred to as the "Pope of the Rosary," he established the Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary in 1573, commemorating the victory at Lepanto, and wrote a papal document solidifying the Rosary as a powerful prayer tool. Its document, the Papal Bull "Consueverunt Romani Pontifices," issued in 1569, confirmed the indulgences granted to those who prayed the Rosary.St. Pius V actively encouraged the use of the Rosary, calling upon Christians across Europe to pray it fervently. He lived a life of holiness and reform. In 1572, when he passed away, his final prayer was, "Lord, increase my sufferings but also my patience."Ave Maria!Jesus, I Trust In You!Come, Holy Spirit, come!To Jesus through Mary! Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will. The ruling set a legal justification for conquest and white supremacy.    Chris Peters, who is Puhlik-lah and Karuk and the president of the Seventh Generation Fund (@7GenFun), says that repudiations and apologies don't get Native land back. May 10: Saint John of Ávila, Priest and Doctor 1499-1569 Optional Memorial: Liturgical Color: White Patron Saint of Andalusia Spain and Spanish clergyHis humble epitaph reads “I was a sower”Some of the most passionate and daring missionaries stayed close to home. They never sailed the high seas or crossed a snow-capped mountain. Today's saint was one of them. He was an only child, and after his parents died, Fr. John sold his family property, travelled to Seville, cut all ties, and prepared to sail to New Spain (Mexico), one more wave in that surging missionary tide which crashed on Mexico's shores throughout the 1500s. But it was not to be. St. John of Ávila never walked up the ship's plank. He never crossed the ocean. While waiting for his ship in Seville, his skills as a preacher and catechist, and his obvious holiness, were noticed by the local bishop, who convinced him to preach, teach, and evangelize in Andalusia, in Spain's rugged south.Saint John then spent himself crisscrossing a region that had only recently been conquered by the Spanish crown, and so was still populated by Spanish Muslims and Jews whose conversions to Catholicism were often more matters of expedience than religious conviction. In this newly opened mission field, our saint's broad, humanistic education perfectly matched the pastoral need. Father John harmonized orthodox theology, renaissance humanism, rigorous morality, and an insightful spirituality into a powerful synthesis which, when conveyed through his compelling preaching, moved his congregations to their very cores. As John migrated through the great cities of southern Spain - Seville, Córdoba, Granada – large numbers of the faithful followed him everywhere, eager to absorb every word that flowed from his mouth or pen.People of every class, educational level, and depth of religious commitment found St. John fascinating. In his own lifetime he came to be known as “Master Ávila” for his dominance of the sacred sciences and his vigorous pastoral efforts. He converted, or led to deeper conversion, Saint John of God, founder of the Hospitaller Order, and Saint Francis Borgia, a future Master General of the Jesuits. He was a friend of Saint Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits, and advised Saint Teresa of Ávila, foundress of the Discalced Carmelites. Despite these, and many other, personal connections to famous religious orders and their founders, St. John always remained a diocesan priest, not a religious order priest, something unusual for a priest of his era with such wide influence.Saint John's erudition and solid virtues were further buttressed by his life of abject poverty and physical suffering. He was also part of that loud, pan-European cry for church reform that preceded the Council of Trent by decades. Saint John established several seminaries and colleges, provided spiritual direction to multitudes of laity, religious and seminarians, wrote a long spiritual treatise called Audi filia (“Listen daughter”) and was invited by a bishop to attend the Council of Trent as his theological adviser, though illness prevented Saint John from making the journey.John was declared Venerable in 1759, Blessed in 1893, and Saint in 1970. Proving that saints are always contemporary, he was declared a doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 after a petition from the Spanish episcopacy for such an honor was duly studied and approved by the Vatican. The Papal Bull declaring him a Doctor of the Church states: “The teaching of John of Ávila is outstanding for its quality and precision, and its breadth and depth, which were the fruit of methodical study and contemplation together with a profound experience of supernatural realities.”In his last few years, Saint John suffered acute physical pain and was largely confined to his humble home. Confinement allowed him to finally perfect his theological and spiritual writings and to correspond with those seeking his wise counsel. The esteemed Master Ávila, a true Man of La Mancha, died clutching a crucifix, surrounded by many disciples, on May 10, 1569.Saint John of Ávila, your refined education, broad mind, and ardent love of God and Mary showed itself in all you did and said. May our lives likewise reflect our deepest Christian beliefs, inspiring our friends and families to live saintly perfection.

Don’t Call Me Resilient

Last week, the Vatican finally distanced itself from the Doctrine of Discovery — a hundreds of years old decree that justified land theft and enslavement of people who were not Christian. In this episode of 'Don't Call Me Resilient,' political and Indigenous studies scholar Veldon Coburn explains why the Vatican's repudiation of the Doctrine is a huge symbolic victory. We also examine what this repudiation may mean for members of Indigenous Nations, what prompted this renouncement, and what still needs to happen.Coburn said:>“For an Indigenous person like myself, it's profound because after four, five hundred years, since the first Papal Bull was issued, I didn't think I'd see it. Even though it may not have great material influence over my relationship with the colonial state, I do know that it's very difficult to get the church to change positions on things because, I mean, you had to twist their arm for a long time to get them to see that the sun was at the centre of the solar system and not the Earth.”Coburn explained how the Doctrine became the ideological justification for settler colonialism and enslavement in the Americas, Africa and much of the former colonies as well as the basis of a legal framework that continues to operate and support land dispossession today. For example, Coburn brings up a 2005 court case involving the Oneida Nation. He said:>“I know people cherished Ruth Bader Ginsburg, but she wrote the decision for the courts in 2005… It was kind of a cruel decision too. It's like, we stole your land.  We get it. You're not getting it back. And then she explicitly cites the doctrine of discovery [denying] Indigenous title to the Oneida Nation in New York State.”We also get into the difference between western ideas about land and Indigenous Knowledge. And how ownership and commodification were central to this decree.Coburn explained how the original decree declared Indigenous territories ready to be claimed because, under western Christian philosophies, land was to be used to generate profit. Coburn said:>"They viewed our 'non-usage' of the whole territory as wasting God's gifts. So these were to be exploited … in market exchange for the creation of wealth.”While the Church's role in land theft was quickly taken up by new political entities, the lingering effects of the Doctrine are still evident in current legislative practices.Christian and European supremacist ideas are evident in the decree: Indigenous peoples and their existence on land was not sufficient evidence of proper governance. These ideas continue to function as a rationale for ongoing colonial practices.  For followers of the church, Coburn said, the Vatican's official repudiation may work to alleviate the moral stain of colonial plunder. It may also serve as an admittance of culpability.Mostly, Coburn suggests, the repudiation is a symbolic gesture offered alongside many others.  >“...as we've seen with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau … the symbolic has moved ahead quite quickly [while] the material aspects of our lived existence still linger in a state that's more resembling of the worst times of colonial assertions of sovereignty over it. So it really hasn't changed. They're still holding onto our land and saying, well, we said we're sorry. What more can we do? There's a lot more… the rightful return, restorative justice means: land back.”

January 27: Saint Angela Merici, Virgin1474–1540Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: WhitePatron Saint of disabled and physically challenged people and illnessesA holy woman tries to change the world one girl at a timeAlthough not common, some older images and statues of Saint Francis of Assisi show him balancing three orbs on his shoulders. They appear to be globes, heavenly realms, or the earth, the moon, and the sun. But the three orbs actually represent the three orders in the Franciscan family: the first order for men, the second order for women, and the third order for the laity who desire to live by the Franciscan Rule. Today's saint, Angela Merici, was a Third Order Franciscan, a lay woman who followed a strict rule of Franciscan life outside of a convent.Angela's holiness, mystical experiences, and leadership skills ultimately led her beyond her Franciscan commitment to found her own community of “virgins in the world” dedicated to the education of vulnerable girls or, in modern parlance, at-risk youths. She placed the community under the patronage of Saint Ursula. The community, after Angela's death, was formally recognized as the Ursulines and gained such renown for their schools that they came to be known as the female Jesuits.Saint Angela saw the risk that uneducated girls in her native region of Northern Italy would end up being abused sexually or financially and sought to counter these possible outcomes through education. She gathered a like-minded group of virgins around her into a “company,” a military word also used by Saint Ignatius in founding his “Company of Jesus” around the same time. Saint Angela organized her city into districts which reported to “colonels” who oversaw the education and general welfare of the poor girls under their care. Saint Angela's cooperators did not understand their dedicated virginity as a failure to find a husband or a rejection of religious life in a convent. They emulated the early Christian orders of virgins as spouses of Christ who served the children of their Beloved in the world.Living in the first part of the sixteenth century, Saint Angela was far ahead of her time. Teaching orders of nuns became normative in the Church in later centuries, staffing Catholic schools throughout the world. But nuns did not always do this. This practice had to start with someone, and that someone was today's saint. Bonds of faith, love of God, and a common purpose knitted her followers together into a religious family that served the spiritual and physical welfare of those who no one else cared about. Women make a house a home, and Saint Angela sought to change society one woman at a time by infusing every home with Christian virtue emanating from the heart of the woman who ran it. She trained future wives, mothers, and educators in their youth, when they were still able to be formed. The Papal Bull of Pope Paul III in 1544, which canonically recognized her community, stated of Saint Angela Merici: “She had such a thirst and hunger for the salvation and good of her neighbor that she was disposed and most ready to give not one, but a thousand lives, if she had had so many, for the salvation even of the least…with maternal love, she embraced all creatures...Her words...were spoken with such unheard of effectiveness that everyone felt compelled to say: ‘Here is God.'”Saint Angela Merici, infuse in our hearts that same love for which you left worldly joys to seek out the vulnerable and the forgotten. Help us to educate the ignorant and to share with the less fortunate, not only for their spiritual and material benefit but for our everlasting salvation.

September 17: Saint Hildegard of Bingen, Virgin and Doctor1098-1179Optional Memorial; Liturgical Color: White Patroness of philologistsA one-woman magisterium orchestrates a life in tune with the CreatorIn the high Middle-Ages, she was New-Age. Before farm-to-table was a term, she lived organically. Before alternative medicine was de rigueur, she catalogued the medicinal benefits of herbs, plants, minerals, and potions. And before anyone ever “went green” to save planet earth, she talked about the “viriditas,” or greenness, of God, meaning how His graces watered a desiccated soul until it flowered with fresh, green, life. Hildegard of Bingen was far, far, ahead of her time even though, from an external perspective, she lived the austere, rigorous, cloistered life common to the female religious of her era.Hildegard was born in the Rhineland, the very western region of modern Germany, to a minor noble family. Her mother and father placed her in the care of a well-known local abbess for her education at the tender age of eight, where she learned Latin and the teachings of the Catholic religion. Her world deepened and broadened inside the four walls of her simple Benedictine convent. When her mentor died, Hildegard became the abbess and soon moved the convent, generating some tension in the process, to a new location where it could better flourish as her fame attracted more and more notice and vocations.Hildegard was unusual for her time. She was unusual, in fact, for any time. She was a polymath with eclectic interests in numerous fields of study. She was a sophisticated and prolific composer of sacred music whose voluminous works surpass the output of almost any other Mediaeval musician. She had an advanced understanding of medicine and the human body, including an almost complete knowledge of how blood circulated in the body - four centuries before such knowledge was verified through post-mortem studies. Hildegard also had detailed knowledge of animal and plant life, of rocks, reptiles, fish, and the natural sciences in general. Yet if she must be known for one thing above all, it must be for her pyrotechnic visions of God and the cosmos. Hildegard's colorful visions are difficult to classify. She described them as a wide-awake spiritual awareness of the “reflection of the living light.” From childhood, she felt her entire body – bones, nerves, veins, senses – all rising ever higher into the vault of heaven where she experienced all of creation in its particularity and in its oneness. These were not ecstasies or physical transportations, but an eyes-wide-open, all-sensory experience of sermons, virtues, writings, and other human actions as if they were shimmering like the sun on the mirror-like surface of a lake. The over-arching theme of these visions was the mystical marriage between God and His creation through the incarnation of Jesus Christ, a union consummated on the cross, where Christ makes his Bride, the Church, fertile for humanity. As Hildegard's writings became more well-known, the Pope was asked for his appreciation of their theological orthodoxy or heterodoxy. Pope Eugene III approved of Hildegarde's description of her visions, with a prudent warning for Hildegard to avoid any pride in being so blessed. The great St. Bernard of Clairvaux, a famous contemporary of Hildegard, was also asked his opinions about her writings and the two exchanged letters. In fact, many people, both humble and exalted, corresponded with Hildegard, leaving behind one of the most massive caches of extant letters from mediaeval times. In the last years of her life, despite worsening health, Hildegarde's prestige was such that she was given permission to leave her convent in order to preach in town squares and Churches, something almost unheard of for a woman of her era. She died in the odor of sanctity on September 17, 1179, the day on which her liturgical memorial is celebrated today. In the 2012 Papal Bull declaring her a Doctor of the Church, Pope Benedict XVI wrote that “the corpus of her writings, for their quantity, quality and variety of interests, is unmatched by any other female author of the Middle Ages.”Saint Hildegarde, your creative and versatile soul brought a feminine genius to the Church's theological and spiritual patrimony, using poetic and symbolic language to express the mysterious richness of God and his creation. Inspire all Christians to read creation like a book of divine life.

As the Feast of Pentecost was approaching, the sacristan of the Church, Dom Garnier, made a special repository for the Blessed Sacrament, for the time when Our Lord Jesus would be exposed to the Faithful.  He did the same thing every year; but this year, he made it just a little more special.  He set up a small Altar, in front of the choir rail, by placing a table on the Gospel side of the Church.  He covered it with a table cloth on which he placed a Tabernacle.  On the Altar, he placed a corporal with a silver Monstrance, whose base was attached to a sacred stone,6 upon it.  He attached the small Altar to the choir rail, to provide strength and security.  In back of the temporary Altar was a red cloth, which hung for the entire three days.  In front of the table, attached to the table cloth was the Papal Bull from Pope Clement VIII, granting the indulgences, and a letter from the local bishop, Msgr. Rye, which authorized the publication of the indulgences.  There was also a relic of the finger of St. Agatha.Based on Miracles of the Eucharist Book 2 https://eucharisticrevival.substack.com/Support the show

May 10: Saint John of Ávila, Priest and Doctor1499-1569Optional Memorial: Liturgical Color: WhitePatron Saint of Andalusia Spain and Spanish clergyHis humble epitaph reads “I was a sower” Some of the most passionate and daring missionaries stayed close to home. While waiting for his ship in Seville, his skills as a preacher and catechist, and his obvious holiness, were noticed by the local bishop, who convinced him to preach, teach, and evangelize in Andalusia, in Spain's rugged south. Saint John then spent himself crisscrossing a region that had only recently been conquered by the Spanish crown, and so was still populated by Spanish Muslims and Jews whose conversions to Catholicism were often more matters of expedience than religious conviction. As John migrated through the great cities of southern Spain - Seville, Córdoba, Granada – large numbers of the faithful followed him everywhere, eager to absorb every word that flowed from his mouth or pen. People of every class, educational level, and depth of religious commitment found St. John always remained a diocesan priest, not a religious order priest, something unusual for a priest of his era with such wide influence. Saint John's erudition and solid virtues were further buttressed by his life of abject poverty and physical suffering. He was also part of that loud, pan-European cry for church reform that preceded the Council of Trent by decades. Saint John established several seminaries and colleges, provided spiritual direction to multitudes of laity, religious and seminarians, wrote a long spiritual treatise called Audi filia (“Listen daughter”) and was invited by a bishop to attend the Council of Trent as his theological adviser, though illness prevented Saint John from making the journey. John was declared Venerable in 1759, Blessed in 1893, and Saint in 1970. Proving that saints are always contemporary, he was declared a doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012 after a petition from the Spanish episcopacy for such an honor was duly studied and approved by the Vatican. The Papal Bull declaring him a Doctor of the Church states: “The teaching of John of Ávila is outstanding for its quality and precision, and its breadth and depth, which were the fruit of methodical study and contemplation together with a profound experience of supernatural realities.” In his last few years, Saint John suffered acute physical pain and was largely confined to his humble home.

Saint Angela Merici, Virgin, 1474–1540January 27—Optional MemorialLiturgical Color: WhitePatron Saint of disabled and physically challenged people and illnessesA holy woman tries to change the world one girl at a timeAlthough not common, some older images and statues of St. Francis of Assisi show him balancing three orbs on his shoulders. They appear to be globes, heavenly realms, or the earth, the moon, and the sun. But the three orbs represent the three orders in the Franciscan family: the first order for men, the second order for women, and the third order for the laity who desired to live by the Franciscan rule. Today's saint, Angela Merici, was a third order Franciscan, a lay woman who followed a strict rule of Franciscan life outside of a convent.Angela's holiness, mystical experiences, and leadership skills ultimately led her beyond her Franciscan commitment to found her own community of “virgins in the world” dedicated to the education of vulnerable girls, or, in common parlance, at risk youths. She placed the community under the patronage of St. Ursula. The community, after Angela's death, was formally recognized as the Ursulines, and gained such renown for their schools that they came to be known as the female Jesuits.St. Angela saw the risk that uneducated girls in her own region of northern Italy would end up being abused sexually or financially and sought to counter this possibility through education. She gathered a like minded group of virgins around her into a “company,” a military word also used by St. Ignatius in founding his “Company of Jesus” around the same time. Saint Angela organized her city into districts which reported to a “colonel” who oversaw the education and general welfare of the poor girls under their care. Saint Angela's cooperators did not understand their dedicated virginity as a failure to find a husband or a rejection of religious life in a convent. They emulated the early Christian orders of virgins as spouses of Christ who served the children of their Beloved in the world.Living in the first part of the 16th century, St. Angela was far ahead of her time. Teaching orders of nuns became normative in the Church throughout the centuries, staffing Catholic schools throughout the world. But nuns did not always do this. It had to start with someone, and that someone was today's saint. Bonds of faith, love of God, and a common purpose knitted her followers together into a religious family that served the spiritual and physical welfare of those who no one else cared about. Women make homes. Men just live in them. Saint Angela sought to change society one woman at a time by infusing every home with Christian virtue emanating from the heart of the woman who ran it. She trained future wives, mothers, and educators in their youth, when they were still able to be formed. The Papal Bull of Pope Paul III in 1544 which recognized her community stated of St. Angela Merici: “She had such a thirst and hunger for the salvation and good of her neighbor that she was disposed and most ready to give not one, but a thousand lives, if she had had so many, for the salvation even of the least… with maternal love, she embraced all creatures…Her words…were spoken with such unheard of effectiveness that everyone felt compelled to say: ‘Here is God.'”St. Angela Merici, infuse in our hearts that same love for which you left worldly joys to seek out the vulnerable and the forgotten. Help us to educate the ignorant and to share with the less fortunate, not only for their spiritual and material benefit but for our everlasting salvation.

At the start, Jacques prompts me to say, have a pen and paper ready, stating not to believe all that he says. That he too, is endeavouring to work it all out, through intense research into old records and books on the web etc all about the ‘forgotten past. Saying that we have no understanding or even knowledge of what has come to pass. Because things are not as they are and as a researcher of both historical events as well as new technologies that are released on today's society, we can not necessarily believe the status quo. It starts with Tim mentioning his interview 5 weeks ago of Dan Hermansen - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guzOgNpZn1k - and the United Tribes flag of 1835 in early NZ, keeping Aotearoa NZ ‘as a free country’ and that King William the lV would have Great Britain protect it. However that flag was cunningly displaced by the Union Jack at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, in 1840 - that contrary to what the Maori chiefs were aware of, New Zealand basically became a colony of Great Britain. Hence Hone Heke, the first Maori chief, to sign this Treaty, cut down the flag staff 4 times due to his disgust in which this Treaty was being administered.  That then, in the comments field of Dan’s interview was this - ‘The Auckland City Council is a Corporation listed on Dun and Bradstreet - So Tim did a web search and we find it in Wiki’ - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dun_%26_Bradstreet   Also mentioned early in this interview was the British East India Company because it was an overseas extension of the British Government and was in many cases a ‘law unto itself’ where it cunningly introduced opium into China in 1825 that soon after, the Chinese addiction to opium expanded (to 4-12 million people).  So this opens the question who was this Company and who governed it?  As they had no apparent conscience. Yet, its flag was an ensign that was accepted by the British Government and Admiralty.   Adjusted for inflation, at its height, the company was worth $4.1 trillion. (Oct 17, 2018)  other searches suggest $7.9 trillion. Jacques, says he has worked for the Central Government in South Africa and in Local Government here in NZ and is horrified at what he believes to have found! Stating there are 2 fundamentals that are universal as it relates to the Law; in this case British Law. They are: 1) Contracts & 2) Jurisdictions Fundamentally all law is a contract A contract aims to control the behaviour / actions of two or more parties. Shortly after Jacques was born, the legal system in South Africa impelled his Dad to sign him away as a bonded surety to a ‘bankrupt franchise.’ Note that South Africa was part of the British Commonwealth until 1961 and rejoined again in 1994. Unbeknown to his Father, while he thought he was doing the right thing, apparently registering Jaques birth, and signing the birth certificate, was actually signing a contract; He made Jacques the surety to a bond in the ALL CAPITALS fictional name that the corporation had created to enslave Jacques for the rest of his life. This Corporation?    This will come later … ALL CAPITALS you ask? Yes, they use what is called Dog Latin, which is capitals or block letters. By the way, Dog Latin was used to trick and deceive back in the days when serfs could not understand what the more educated were able to control how Law was administered. Note The Latin alphabet started out as uppercase serifed letters known as Roman square capitals. Ancient Greek started off this way too. And it seems the legacy continues to this day; In the English language all capital writing is not a proper noun; A proper noun is the name of a man or woman, place or physical thing; That all capitalised name is not a proper noun and therefore not a name; For example a name used for an individual person, place, or organisation, spelled with an initial capital letter, e.g. Jane, London, and Greenpeace. Often contrasted with common nouns. Is it a lawful contract? No, because his Dad was never given full disclosure of what he was actually signing; So the birth certificates of everyone are traded on the capital markets and heaps of money is made from them, according to Karen Hudes, former World Bank lawyer.  (do your own research). ‘Everyone includes people who are born in countries like NZ, Australia - and very possibly Canada, and the USA plus UK. Is India and Pakistan? Research it. The Corporation establishes how much tax the child will pay over his or her lifetime and that birth certificate / bond is then traded on the capital markets;   Who is this Corporation and why does it trick parents into doing this? The answer to the why question is easy; control and trillions of dollars; But there is also a sinister reason, which he will come to later. But who is behind the Corporation? His research has shown that there is one massive Corporation; All the others are subdivisions of the main one; The biggest sub-division is the United States The corporation is known by a few names; Triple Crown; Tri-Regnum, Triple Tiara and Three-times Royal The Triple Crown was started as a testamentary trust in 1302 pursuant to the Papal Bull called Unam Sanctam, the Holy Singularity / Sanctified Unity; Pope Boniface VIII announced that he would depose King Philip IV of France if need be and issued the bull Unam Sanctam ('One Holy'), the most famous papal document of the Middle Ages, affirming the authority of the Pope as the heir of Peter and Vicar of Christ over all human authorities, spiritual and temporal.  (Bull = Decree or edict) Underlying the trust, is a global estate. The Pope claimed he owned all land, all flesh and all, wait for it… souls! All being part of the global estate. But surely the Pope had no say over the affairs of England? So did the Pope have control over King William the 4th when he said he would protect the NZ Maori Chiefs Freedoms in 1835? - even though the British were a Protestant country and had the largest seafaring Navy at that time.  Well, this is where things get interesting. So let’s go back to 1215 when King John was forced by the barons to sign the Magna Carta. What happened two years prior to that? Early on the 15 May 1213 King John went to the church of the Templars at Dover and there he knelt before Pandulph, the legate of the Pope, placed his crown in Pandulf's hands and took the oath of fealty to the Pope in Rome. Fealty is a feudal tenant / vassal’s sworn loyalty to a lord, in this case the Pope. King John also handed the legate a document stating that for the atonement of his sins against God and Church that he surrendered into the hands of Pope Innocent and his successors forever, the kingdoms of England and lordship of Ireland, to hold them henceforth as fiefs of the Holy See - the Pope. Many believe that John ceased being King when he laid his crown at the feet of a foreign priest;    So this is how the Pope claims he owns all land, But how does he own all flesh and all souls? Well, the ‘birth certificate’ is a contract remember? It is the commercial vessel which is floated upon the ocean of commerce. We are made to believe that that fictitious ALL CAPS name is our real name and as such we are made surety for the bond. But actually we have nothing to do with it and the so-called birth certificate contract is invalid because no full disclosure was given at the time it was signed or any time thereafter. So they are tricking all of us into believing we have to pay taxes and fines and rates when really it is all deception. But, because we pay it we contract to the Corporation. When we vote, for example, we are contracting with the Corporation and giving it legitimacy. We are given the illusion of a democracy, but there is really no democracy. It is simply another deception. How many believe that the Queen of England has anything to do with assenting to Acts of Parliament? Her title was changed and the Roman numeral of II removed and replaced by Queen Elisabeth 2nd If you don’t believe go and check out the NZ Governor General’s website. If a monarch’s Roman numeral, as appears in Queen Elizabeth II, does not appear in her name, they are no longer referring to her, but some fictitious entity. However, due to the fact that no full disclosure was given to our parents when they signed the birth certificate, the contract can be rescinded, which means the Pope does not lawfully own all flesh and ‘souls.’ The key to remove ourselves from this contract is to understand exactly how it was constructed, so we don’t get ourselves into trouble when we rescind it. The Triple Crown Corporation is made up of: The City of London in the City of London, which holds the land, law and banking and or monetary system. (Kensington and WhiteHall). The Vatican, which deals with the religious side of things and; Washington D.C. which was the completion of the Triple Crown, which is the enforcer / military might behind it. All the established nation-states were trans-migrated into corporations, which are the subdivisions of the Triple Crown. That he believes includes NZ & Australia. This was all supposedly done in the 1700’s - do your own research - it’s a quagmire  Jacques says if you go to the Securities and Exchange Commission website you will find the NZ and Australian governments there, of which he has screenshots. http://www.wakeupkiwi.com/new-zealand-corporate-government.shtml In NZ, most of our ministries, like the Ministry of Justice, NZ Police, Defence Force, Treasury, Ministry of Business Innovation & Employment, etc are all listed on the biggest business website in the world; Dun & Bradstreet as companies, with sales revenue. I have those screenshots too. So New Zealand and Australia seem to be very much part of this greater Triple Crown Corporation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dun_%26_Bradstreet - but do your own research as Wiki has been compromised for years.  Jacques sent an Official Information Act Request to Justice Minister Andrew Little asking if the Ministry of Justice is a company. He has 20 working days to respond. It has been 2 months and still no response from the Minister. Why? He has now referred the matter to the Ombudsman but found out that even the Office of the Ombudsman is listed on the Dun & Bradstreet website as a company with sales revenue of $6m. The reason Jacques is making such a fuss about this is because in our legal courts he is convinced they are not practising Law. He believes they are controlled by the Corporation to monetise we citizens (or the slaves) - because last time he checked the Ministry of Justice sales revenue in one year was $395m. Also if the Ministry is in fact a company, how can they administer justice, when there is a huge conflict of interest? How can a company or corporation be in charge of a country’s Justice system? If the NZ Treasury is a company, how can it control public funds? Our only saving grace, one would think is the old English Common Law but in 1986 the Constitution Act removed most of it. One has to wonder why? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_Act_1986  - But, was this the full account of what happened? And then in 1988 the Imperial Laws Application Act brought it all back. Since then many amendments have been made. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperial_Laws_Application_Act_1988  - Again this is so messy - what can we believe? As Jacques has not had the time to investigate all of this yet -  He has brought together a few bright minds to assist him - this is ongoing. You see the English Common Law includes Magna Carta which was designed to protect individual rights. But, the Corporation does not want its slaves to have rights. Is that why when one becomes a barrister or lawyer or solicitor one has to swear an oath to the NZ Law Society and at the ceremony all have to bow to the judges? When you bow to someone they become your master. How can a lawyer fight one’s case properly if he is subject to his master. Some believe that lawyers are there to ensure you contract with the court. As soon as you contract - you lose your English Common Law and inalienable rights as man and woman. Then they can do to you as they please. Ask the Ministry of Justice about that and they refuse to comment. If any of your listeners would like to support the work that Jacques is doing, or want to be released from this system, you can contact me on trrassoc@gmail.com So the point that Jacques has been endeavouring to make here, is that a system was created to enslave us for our entire lives; a system which subtly robs us of the life God (or evolution) (or both) - gave you and your inalienable rights. Jacques mentions it is also a system which now believes there are too many people on this Earth and that we need to be culled, through unsafe technology like 5G, vaccines, nano tech, chips that includes  ruining the income of billions. That he has never consented to be controlled by this system and he does not consent now. Nor should you. He is preparing to throw off the shackles and so should you. People Around the World are Waking Up to this Deception. Jacques reminds us, if we don’t stand together the 1% will totally control us, because currently we have no rights. Look at Victoria in Australia. Do they have any rights? Look at how people are being grabbed by their throats. They have caused no harm to anyone, but are being treated worse than animals by the so-called police and no one lifts a finger. So Tim says - “NZers get serious and savvy and start to challenge the authorities on this and similar issues. This is what a participative Democracy is.” We have been conned into looking after the ‘I’ when the ‘WE’ is our safety. The Corporation does everything to isolate us from one another, so they can control the WE, because they fear us. They are after all the 1% and we are the 99%. Jacques says … do yourself a favour and switch off the mainstream media. They spread what they are told to spread and will brainwash you into their narrative every time. If you want to get out of the system, you need to get rid of the propaganda. In South Africa the Zulus refer to Ubuntu. For me it means we are all connected and we all need each other to thrive and survive. We have to stand against those that want to harm us or rob us of Ubuntu. If we don’t we, as the collective will be taken, one by one, like the protesters in Victoria Australia and lose everything our forefathers fought so hard and died, for us to have. In NZ we have Aroha and this too is a major statement of Love and unconditional Love that is the building block of Maoridom.  Other points in this interview: Sovereignty - Australia has ‘Australia Day’ on the 26 January every year - this is when they ‘supposedly broke away from Britain. America has Independence Day - the 4th of July when the became independent of Britain  Where is NZ’s day of independence from Britain? Some say it was sometime in 1947. On 26 September 1907 the United Kingdom granted New Zealand "Dominion" status within the British Empire. New Zealand became known as the Dominion of New Zealand. The date was declared Dominion Day, but never reached any popularity as a day of independence. In 1948 New Zealanders became New Zealand citizens – before that they had been British citizens. New Zealand gained full legal independence when Parliament passed the Constitution Act 1986. In 2003 a new Supreme Court was created, replacing Britain's Privy Council as New Zealand's final court of appeal. June 20, 2012 When is NZ day proclaimed in NZ?  We do not have one … http://www.wakeupkiwi.com/what_is_the_crown-City_of_London.shtml  Gag Orders   - In NZ Local Councils will not let you speak out about certain information. Does this mean that even if you are a Member of Parliament in NZ that you are not allowed Parliamentary Privilege - to raise points that you think are of national importance?  What are Gag orders - do you sign them when entering Parliament? Please look at the back of the NZ Passport - the North Island has printed on it NZ - whilst the South Island has nothing. Maps of NZ for the last 70 plus years have always had an even spread of ‘New Zealand’ across both the North & South Island , but not so on our passport.  Why? NZ IN 1967 changed their money from Pounds - to Dollars - a $100 bill was printed, yet though we have eliminated small coins we have not made a commensurate change by printing a $500 note - because NZers have forgotten that the $100 bill now is only worth $20.00 in 1967. That is an example of how docile and slumberous we have become - the bankers will most probably frog march us into a cashless society - sooner rather than later.   That people are encouraged to research  Jordan Maxwell - Matrix of Power and what is Admiralty Law?   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-cb1P-lZ_4  That so much is happening that it is all hidden in plain sight. Yet, NZ society as a whole - seems blissfully complacent and unaware. In 2003, I (Tim) took my class of language students to see Queen Elisabeth 2nd at the America’s Cup Village in Downtown Auckland. That I then found myself in the middle of a loud beseeching by two middle class men dressed in suits calling and addressing Queen Elisabeth ll of England. They honoured her as the Head of the Church of England and Defender of the Faith. They politely but forcefully asked her to outrightly condemn the Pope in Rome as the Anti Christ and in league with Satan - and that here I was 5 meters from the Queen and 5 metres away from the two men standing on some seats.  (this was more than astounding. Here they were still fighting the war between the Roman Catholics and the Protestants.)   That Treasury here in NZ has a direct line to the US State Department - Why? That Donald Trump has recently taken over the US Federal Reserve - which is a private Corporation - asserting US Independence from the City of London? When Donald and Melania Trump visited London in June 2119 they both broke a major royal protocol rule by shaking hands with members of the royal family instead of curtsying and bowing. To top it off, in a ceremony In London in front of the trooping of the colour and pomp and ceremony Donald Trump walked out in front of the Queen - which signified that he was in command and that the USA under Trump had made a major break with the City of London.  https://www.insider.com/donald-trump-broke-major-royal-protocol-visit-with-the-queen-2019-6  There have been whispers recently that Prince Charles in the last months has been crowned King to replace his Mother Elisabeth 2nd - so there are plenty of assertions flying around at present, that signify huge change is upon us. Also that all the Lord Mayors of London have been Freemasons for something like the last 200 years, until Ken Livingston from the Labour party broke that spell … from 2000 to 2008. What does this portend? When In NZ you receive a traffic infringement it is addressed to you in CAPITAL LETTERS  - why?  See above. The Pope says we individual humans can not have a direct relationship with God - that we have to go through the Catholic Church?  Why? Because this is how the Church funds itself. https://www.ncronline.org/blogs/francis-chronicles/church-essential-faith-there-are-no-free-agents-pope-says https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4svTOrMREA    Where does this leave Protestants? The United States Isn't a Country — It's a Corporation! https://www.serendipity.li/jsmill/us_corporation.htm https://wwwsolutionsempowerment.com   - if you want support against having to comply and have enforced injections against your will. Click This was more than an intriguing interview. It was also a call to waken NZ journalists who have become so distracted by political in fighting that they have become profoundly lost in their own drama. Next Week. What is the soul, why has the soul been such an important part of human endeavour for millennia?

Eric Jackson is a force for good. He is standing up against systematic oppression and empowering the Black community to take ownership—ownership of land, ownership of business, and ownership of their situation. What begins as a conversation about food apartheid in a suburb of Baltimore builds into a larger conversation on the history of class-based inequity and how it is up to the oppressed—not the oppressor—to create social change. In times such as these, it is the actions of people like Eric that will incite systematic change.  What we discuss in this episode:   - Eric’s childhood and how it shaped his current endeavors  - History of food disparity and housing segregation   - What is food apartheid? “How can you say to me, flee like a bird to your mountain” (Psalm 11:1 NIV). “I take refuge in the Lord,” was his reply. Yet, they continued to warn David, “But, they are preparing their bows, even now they are taking aim at your heart.” David’s reply is astounding. “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” If the righteous leaders flee when the wicked are dangerously seeking to destroy them, on what foundation can the righteous build a future for the nation and a hope for their families? A great question; it is a critical question. It is a question that has been faced generation after generation. Some leaders have stood the test well while others have failed miserably. The leaders in Judah are a sad testimony of not standing for truth and failing to provide righteous leadership at an hour of moral landslide. “The conspiracy of her prophets in her midst is like a roaring lion tearing the prey; they have devoured people; they have taken treasure and precious things; they have made many widows in her midst. Her priests have violated My law and profaned My holy things; they have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean and the clean; and they have hidden their eyes from My Sabbaths, so that I am profaned among them. Her princes in her midst are like wolves tearing the prey, to shed blood, to destroy people, and to get dishonest gain. Her prophets plastered them with untempered mortar, seeing false visions, and divining lies for them, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord God,’ when the Lord had not spoken. The people of the land have used oppressions, committed robbery, and mistreated the poor and needy; and they wrongfully oppress the stranger. So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one. Therefore I have poured out My indignation on them; I have consumed them with the fire of My wrath; and I have recompensed their deeds on their own heads,” says the Lord God” (Ezekiel 22:25-31 NKJV). The fifteenth and sixteenth century A.D. was another crisis time. The foundations of the faith were being crushed through Aristotelian philosophy, distorted theology, greedy leadership, and moral bankruptcy. Into this foray came the clarion voices of John Hus, Savonarola, and the giant of the Reformation, Martin Luther. When being faced with the threats and condemnation of a Papal Bull at the Diet of Worms, Luther stood for truth and was bold to answer. Quoting from his own writings, he declared, “I am bound to the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not retract anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. I cannot do otherwise. Here I stand. God help me. Amen.” (Martin Luther, Eric Metaxas, Viking, New York: 2017, p. 216). In the seventeenth century the Church of England was awash with distorted theology, bishops preaching politically correct sermons, and drunkenness. Again men of God rose to the occasion proclaiming truth as the Puritan movement sought to right the Church of England. Little known Gospel preacher, John Bunyan wrote Pilgrim’s Progress at this critical hour. Read the rest

The Psalmist David was alarmed that he was being encouraged to flee impending danger. The holiness movement and Pentecostal outpouring of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century was birthed in the heart of men and women passionately seeking revival at a time when the church was growing cold spiritually. The pulpits of the land were teaching a dead theology. Higher criticism or historical criticism was denouncing the infallibility of the Word of God, mocking the virgin birth and distorting the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Into the labyrinth of spiritual distortion came a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit that brought a fresh wind of spiritual life and birthed a mighty harvest of soul winning. Again, we have come to a time when people “will not endure sound doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:3 NKJV). They want teaching that satisfies their own desires. “[B]ecause they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 NKJV). We must have clarion voices that will lead us in these dangerous times. If not, the foundations will be destroyed and then what can the righteous do? How Should We Respond When the Foundations Are Destroyed? The Apostle Paul wrote to his spiritual son Timothy, “But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust” (1Timothy 1:8-11 NKJV). This same Gospel has been vouched safe in our hands for this generation. It is a Gospel that clearly delineates what is moral right and wrong. This Gospel presents without shadow the means of salvation provided by the Almighty and profoundly declares the consequences of rejecting His salvation. Not only is murder, kidnapping, lying and perjury among the list of unrighteousness behavior, so is fornication (pre-marital sex) and sodomy (homosexuality). Does it seem strange to you that what so clearly was part of the Gospel in the New Testament has now become blurry? Some in this generation have even outright rejected it. Can you feel the foundation shaking? Hooking up and living together is the new norm for “Christian” couples in their twenties and thirties. Divorced men and women in fifties and sixties are beginning to embrace the new moral standards as they reenter the dating scene. Strong voices in the Evangelical circles are calling for recognition of same sex marriage. Gender dysphoria is the new pop psychology being taught in Christian universities as if it were absolute truth. When a voice for the true Gospel is lifted into the cacophony moral goo they are denounced as legalistic, intolerant, and unloving. It is as if a twenty-first century higher criticism has risen denouncing the clear scriptural injunction for moral purity and holiness. You will hear some voices saying, “Homosexuality today is not the same as it was in the Old Testament and in the time of the Apostle Paul.” Other voices will call for grace, love, and understanding. One leading pastor being interviewed on a nationwide news panel was asked, “So it is not a sin your church to have an abortion?” His answer was not a clear statement of right and wrong but, “We would find out your story, where you are from. People have to live their own conviction. If I have to tell you. That is such a broad question. I am going higher.” Then he was asked, “It is not an open and shut case with you?” His answer? “Some people would say it is. I am trying to see people who Jesus is first. Hear their story first, before I start picking and choosing what is sin in their life.” Do you feel a troubling shaking in the foundation? We are seeing exactly what our Lord declared about the religious leaders of Judah. “[T]hey have not distinguished between the holy and unholy, nor have they made known the difference between the unclean…” Where are the spiritual leaders who will boldly, valiantly, and without compromise stand up before the politically correct, tolerance demanding public, who are “preparing their bows… taking aim at your heart” and declare “God says, ‘Be holy for I am holy’”? There is an absolute moral right and wrong. Scripture calls for a child of God to live “in righteousness and true holiness” because we have been born again put on the new nature. It is time to affirm again the foundations of the true faith, “once for all delivered to the saints.” If you enjoyed this podcast, please consider leaving us a review. On the afternoon of December 10, 1520, a number of faculty from the University of Wittenberg and a batch of students gathered outside the Elster gate on the east end of the city. A notice that had been posted in a nearby chapel inviting anyone who thought the Roman church’s teaching stank to join to together at the city’s rankest spot: the town carrion pit. There they could witness the burning of the church’s foulest books of Scholastic theology and papal laws, all of it organized by Martin Luther’s friend and colleague Johann Agricola.

Hard as it is to believe, this document that is more than 500 years old has been used by our own US Supreme Court to justify abrogating treaties with Native peoples! Our guest this week, Misa Hopkins is an advocate for the “sacred feminine” who appreciates — thanks to her own Native American ancestry and connections with indigenous peoples worldwide — not just the exploitation and domination of women and women’s wisdom, but the exploitation of and extraction from the natural world.Misa Hopkins is the author of the bestselling book series, Sacred Feminine Awakening, and is the Spiritual Director at SacredFeminineAwakening.com. The Guardian of a Sacred Native Path in the Feminine, she has had mystical initiations in feminine and masculine energies, and has been given the sacred names Amma (Mother) and Morning Star (Venus). Misa’s life and work is dedicated to facilitating the personal and planetary healing that comes with Sacred Feminine awareness. Her mission is to help women find their sacred feminine AND facilitate men finding their own spiritual identity so that instead of the “he said / she said” yelling matches on the battlefield, the sacred feminine and sacred masculine work together as dynamic duo dance partners.Misa offers insight into how women are awakening to a deeper identity than is offered by contemporary feminism, and how these new ways of thinking, feeling and experiencing are impacting relationships with men. This awakening has led women to embrace new priorities that go far beyond the #METOO domain. She and her partner Jeff Burger were living in Charlottesville at the time of the protest riots last year, and she has a unique and comprehensive perspective on what really happened — and the misunderstandings that led to the death of Heather Heyer, who was protesting the alt right rally. If you’re curious as to how a new sacred feminism is informing a new generation, please join us this Tuesday, October 16th at 2 pm PT / 5 pm ET. http://omtimes.com/iom/shows/wiki-politiki-radio-show/Or, find us on the Wiki archives on Wednesday: http://wikipolitiki.com/archives/Misa Hopkins can be found online at: https://sacredfeminineawakening.com/Support Wiki Politiki — A Clear Voice In The “Bewilderness”If you LOVE what you hear, and appreciate the mission of Wiki Politiki, “put your money where your mouse is” … Join the “upwising” — join the conversation, and become a Wiki Politiki supporter: http://wikipolitiki.com/join-the-upwising/Make a contribution in any amount via PayPal (https://tinyurl.com/y8fe9dks)Go ahead, PATRONIZE me! As we prepare to leave the EU, Jonathan Freedland compares overseas trade in today's Elizabethan age with that of the sixteenth century. In 1570 Elizabeth I was the subject of a Papal Bull of Excommunication, Theresa May must write a letter to Europe to trigger Article 50. Both documents will have a profound impact on trade. Elizabeth's response to her European troubles was to forge new trade links with the East, sending merchants to Turkey, Persia and North Africa. Today's trade ministers hope to emulate the achievements of their Tudor counterparts, but how important is trade with Europe to our prosperity and how easy will it be to do new trade deals on more distant shores ? Taking the Long View of trade, Jonathan is joined by Professor Jerry Brotton of Queen Mary University of London, author of 'This Orient Isle:Elizabethan England and the Islamic World'. Discussing today's export markets are the economists George Magnus, Liam Halligan and Dr Monique Ebell and our actor is Anita Dobson.

The History of the Christian Church

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 1, 1970

This episode of Communio Sanctorum is titled, “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do.”In our study of the History of the Church, we get to examine some periods when the followers of Jesus did some amazing, God-honoring, Christ-exalting, people-blessing things. In future episodes, we'll take a longer look at how the Gospel has impacted history and world civilization for the better. But, we have to be honest and admit there have been too many times when the Church totally fumbled the ball. Worse than that, after fumbling, they stepped on and kicked it out of bounds! The danger I face as we deal with these atrocious moments in Church History is of being assumed to be hostile to the Body of Christ. When I speak about the abysmal career of some of the popes, some listeners assume I'm Catholic-bashing. Later, when we get to the Reformation era and take a look at some of the Reformers, I'll be accused of being a closet-Catholic!So I want to pause here and say à This isn't a podcast about me, but I need to use me as an example . . .As most of you know, I'm a non-denominational Evangelical pastor. I'm not a scholar, not even close. I'm just a guy who loves history and decided to share what he was learning about the history of the church with others because at the time CS began, there just wasn't a short-format church history podcast available. While I genuinely try to be unbiased in presenting the story of the Church, it's inevitable I'll slant the narrative at points. I've already made it clear that when I do offer mere opinion, I'll preface it with a warning, but infrequent side comments can still color the material. Even what adjectives I pick reveal bias. While I aim to be faithful in my own walk with God, my role in my family as a husband and father, and my calling as a pastor, I freely admit I'm still a man in process. I have many faults and a long way to go to be conformed to Christ's image. Keenly aware of how far I have to go is what causes me to wonder how God could use me! Yet use me He does, week after week, in my role as pastor. I'm such a flawed vessel, yet God keeps pouring His grace thru me. It's humbling. The point is this: While so much of Church History is flat-out embarrassing, God still uses the Church, still works by His Spirit through His people to accomplish His purposes. So when we see the Church stumble, regardless of what group it is, what era, what label is applied to those who mess up, let's not white-wash, edit, or redact. Let's tell it like it is; own it as part of our history, but remember that while man fails, God never does. From the late 9th to 10th C the position of Roman bishop once held by such godly men as Popes Leo and Gregory was turned over to a parade of corrupt nobles who were anything but. This was a time when the position of the pope was a plum political appointment, with the potential of gaining great wealth and power for the pope's family.  The intrigue surrounding the selection of the pope was vast and nefarious. An Italian heiress named Marozia [mah-RO-zee-ah], controlled the bishop's seat at Rome for 60 years. She was one bishop's mother, another's murderer and a third's mistress.  In what just about everyone recognizes as a low point for the Papacy, Octavianus, Marozia's grandson, celebrated his impending election as Pope John XII, by toasting the devil. Once in office, his behavior was far from saintly. The immorality that attended his term was legendary. Corruption of the office didn't end with his death. Reform was desperately needed and many called for it. But one man's reform is another's loss of power and access to wealth.Though the Western and Eastern halves of the Church had quarreled for centuries over minor doctrinal issues and who ought to lead the Church, they still saw themselves as one Body. That unity was doomed by many years of contention and the fragmenting of the world into conflicted regions brought about by the dissolving of the Roman Empire and constant invasion of outsiders. The emergence of Islam in the 7th C accelerated the break between East and West. We might assume the 2 halves of the old Empire would unite in face of the Islamic threat, and there were times when that seemed hopeful. But the reality was, Islam presented a threat across such a huge front, the various regions of Christendom ended up having to face the threat on their own.Between the 9th and 13th Cs, three separate challenges split Christianity into 2 disparate camps. Like taps on a diamond, each furthered the emerging rift until finally the break came. The first tap had to do with the Nicene Creed hammered out at the Council of Nicea all the way back in the early 4th C when Constantine was Emperor. In the 9th C, the Nicene Creed still stood as the standard formulation for how Christians in the East and West understood God. But the Spanish church added something they thought would make the creed clearer. The original creed stated, “The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father.” The revised creed of the Spanish church said, “The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son.”This reflected the work on the Trinity that had been conducted by later Councils. Remember, the very first councils were consumed with understanding the nature of Jesus and settled on the doctrine He is both fully God and fully Man. They labored hard to find just the right words to say that. Then, they turned their attention to the issue of the Trinity, and after much labor settled on the wording that God is one in essence but three in person.  For most people, that was enough, but theologians have minds that want to go further. They debated over how to understand the divinity of God. Who actually possessed deity; all three equally? Or did one possess it, then shared it with the others? The Western Church centered held the idea divinity was co-equal and underived in Father, Son and Holy Spirit. But relationally the Son proceeds from the Father, and the Holy Spirit then proceeds from both Father and Son. This seemed to accurately reflect the subordinate missions assigned the 2nd and 3rd members of the Trinity in the Bible. The Western Church adopted the revised Nicene Creed. The Eastern Church balked! Everyone agreed the Nicene Creed had been a work of the Spirit of God illuminating the minds of the Council to the Word of God. It was inviolable! How could Rome think to fiddle with it? And especially without consulting them? Why, at the Councils of Ephesus and Chalcedon, the Bishops committed themselves never to change the creed.According to Eastern theologians, divinity dwelt only in the Father. The Father then shared the divine being with the Son and Spirit. They could not say the Spirit “proceeds from the Father and the Son.” If the Spirit arose from "the Father and the Son," the Son would possess divine being co-equally with the Father. While there had been potential doctrinal rifts before, the East and West had always been able to reach a consensus. That historic consensus became increasingly distant as this debate, known as the Filioque Controversy, raged. Filioque is Latin for “and the Son.”In 867 Photius, bishop of Constantinople formally denounced the added phrase. Five years later, Pope Adrian II offered to drop the phrase “and the Son” from the Nicene Creed. Rome would drop the Filioque clause if the Eastern church accepted the Pope's supremacy over the Church. Photius declined. >> Tap 1.Get ready for Tap 2 …One day in AD 1048, three shoeless pilgrims—Bruno, Humbert, and Hildebrand walked together through the gates of Rome. Each in his own way would transform the Roman church.Bruno was elected Pope Leo IX. He immediately set about reforming the Roman church morally and theologically.  To keep priests from passing ecclesiastical positions to their children, he demanded celibacy. Next, he moved to extricate the Church from secular entanglements and obligations to European nobility. Bruno and his successor popes really believed God had given them authority over all Christians. The new bishop of Constantinople, Michael Cerularius, refused to recognize Bruno as Pope. He closed every church in Constantinople loyal to Rome. Bruno then sent envoys to Constantinople to negotiate peace. His chief envoy was his friend Humbert. Before leaving Rome, Humbert wrote a bold notice in the Pope's name. This official church notice is called a bull. We get our word “bulletin” from it. A Bull was an authoritative announcement of intention to follow a particular course. It's based in the authority of the person who writes it or whose name it bears.Humbert made the journey from Rome to Constantinople, bull in hand. He arrived on July 16, 1054, marched into the Hagia Sophia while Communion was being observed. As one author says, Humbert's notice was a lot like a Texas longhorn: It had a point here, a point there, and a lot of bull in between. Condemned in the bull were the Eastern practices of allowing priests to marry, refusing to recognize baptism performed in Roman churches, and deleting the Filioque. For the record, the Roman church had allowed priests to marry for several centuries, the Eastern church did not refuse to recognize Roman baptism, and they absolutely did NOT DELETE the phrase” and the son” from the Creed – The Western Church had added it!Humbert threw the bull on the Communion table, turned his back on the priest, and walked out, knocking the dust from his sandals and yelling "Let God judge!" A deacon picked up the bull and chased after Humbert, begging him to take it back. Humbert refused. The Papal Bull was viewed by the Eastern Church as the proverbial gauntlet, thrown at their feet by the Pope. The options seemed clear; either submit to the Pope's undisputed authority over the Church, or be considered by Rome a breakaway church.Tap 2The third and decisive tap that sundered East from West was the Crusades, specifically, the 4th. I need to make clear we're only dipping a toe into the subject of the Crusades for now. They're a major part of Church History we'll spend a lot more time on in future episodes. For now, we're only looking at how the Crusades served to split the Western and Eastern Churches. But even before THAT, I'm compelled to remind everyone that when I refer to the Eastern Church, what I really mean is the Greek Orthodox or Byzantine Church; not the Church of the East we've looked at in earlier podcasts. For simplicity sake. Picture a map of the ancient world; that swath of the globe that includes to the far left, Spain and Northwest Africa, up thru England and Scotland. Now, put the Middle East with Mesopotamia in the center of that mental map, and at the far right, China and Japan. Now, draw a mental oval over Spain, the British Isles, France, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia; shade it blue – That's the Western Church, speaking Latin, and centered at Rome under the Popes.Next, draw another oval over all East Europe and West Asia; shade it Green – That's the Byzantine Church, speaking Greek and centered at Constantinople under the Patriarchs. Finally, draw a 3rd oval over The Middle East, Mesopotamia, Persia, Central Asia, India, China and all the way to Japan. Shade it red – That's the Nestorian Church of the East, that speaks mainly Syriac and is headquartered at Nisibis & Edessa under the leadership of the Metropolitans.Note how much larger that 3rd sphere is. It covers a territory and population much larger than the two to its west combined. Yet in the popular review of Church History, this Church of the East is often neglected. The reason for that neglect is a subject for a later episode. My point here is that when we speak of the break between the Eastern and Western Churches, let's be sure we understand that the description of the Byzantine Church as the Eastern Church isn't really accurate. It's only a description of the Byzantine Church as being to the geographic East of the Western, Latin Church. Now, back to our look at the 3rd tap that severed West from East . . .As we've seen in previous episodes, penance played a major role in the religious life of Medieval Christians. Many believed they could prove themselves worthy of God's favor by going on a “pilgrimage.” So pilgrims traveled to shrines containing the bones of saints and relics from the Biblical story.  European cathedrals were centers where these sacred items were kept. But the greatest pilgrimage of all, one taken by not a few sincere believers was to Jerusalem. Even today with modern forms of transportation, a trip to Israel is a major event requiring special arrangements and a significant investment. Imagine what it meant for a pilgrim of the 10th or 11th C!  They walked hundreds of miles, braved a risky voyage aboard a ship that traveled through stormy, pirate-infested seas. This was no Disneyland ride; there were real-deal pirates who'd slit your throat or sell you into slavery. Fun stuff.Pilgrimages became such a fixture of medieval society, to impede a pilgrim's journey was thought to imperil his/her salvation. So a whole trade developed in assisting pilgrims reaching their destination, whether it was some cathedral or holy shrine in Europe, or the great pilgrimage to the Holy Land. From AD 638, Muslims controlled Jerusalem and the routes leading there. They required pilgrims to pay special fees. So in 1095 in France, Pope Urban II responded by preaching one of history's most influential sermons. We'll go into the details later. For now, just know he said, “Your Eastern brothers have asked for your help! Turks and Arabs have conquered their territories. I or, rather, the Lord begs you … destroy that vile race from your brothers' lands!”The response astounded both the Pope and Europe's nobility. The crowd of commoners began to chant, “Deus vult = God wills it!” There was an immediate response of hundreds to go in relief of their imperiled brothers.  As the days passed, the fervor spread and soon, nobles and serfs set off on the Great Pilgrimage to liberate Jerusalem from the infidels. They sewed crosses onto their tunics and painted them on their shields. Nobles forged new swords and spears while commoners grabbed whatever might make for a weapon and set off. They agreed to gather in Constantinople. The First Crusade was off and running.Among the peasants that set out on the 1st Crusade was a large group who followed a monk known as Peter the Hermit. The swarthy monk had not bathed in decades. He rode a burro that, according to some bore a remarkable resemblance to its rider. Peter's preaching was even more powerful than his odor. In 9 months, he gathered 20,000 European peasants to fight the Eastern infidel. They caused immediate chaos when they arrived in Constantinople. Complaints of robbery poured into the Emperor's office. He knew the untrained peasants were no match for the Muslims who cut their teeth on conquest, but he couldn't let them linger in his city. So he ferried them across the river where they began pillaging the homes of Eastern Christians, straining relations between the Byzantine and Roman churches. 2 months later, these peasants marched straight into an ambush. Peter, still in Constantinople begging for supplies, was the lone survivor. He joined another army, led by European nobility. These Crusaders clashed with the Muslims in Antioch, then continued on to Jerusalem. On July 15, 1099, Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders. Near the Temple Mount, the blood flowed ankle-deep. Newborns were thrown against walls. Crusaders torched a synagogue and burned the Jews inside alive. To this day, this wholesale slaughter affects how Jews and Muslims perceive the Church.A couple more Crusader campaigns were launched, then in 1198 a noble became Pope Innocent III. He inspired the 4th Crusade that would finally divide the Byzantine and Roman Churches. The bottom line of the 4th Crusade is that it was more than anything, a commercial venture. The merchants of the powerful city-state of Venice agreed to supply the Crusaders with ships at the cost of 84,000 silver coins. They were then to sail to Egypt and destroy a key Muslim base that would open up trade.  In the summer of 1202, the Crusaders arrived in Venice expecting to sail to Egypt. But there was a problem: Only one-third of the expected number of Crusaders showed up, and they came up with only 50,000 silver coins. Not to worry, an ambitious Eastern prince who fancied himself someone who deserved a fate and station better than the one life had dealt him, offered to finance the crusade à get this: Under the condition the Crusaders sail to Constantinople FIRST and dethrone the current Emperor. Once that was done, they could be on their merry way. Pope Innocent III forbade the assault on Constantinople, but no one paid him any mind. On July 5, 1203, the Crusaders arrived in Constantinople. But the people of the city were quite over the mess these Europeans kept making of things and revolted. They pre-empted the Crusaders attempt to install their own emperor and instead selected a fiercely anti-Crusader ruler. The Crusaders were furious. They'd set out to destroy Muslims in Egypt and saw their side trip to Constantinople as a brief diversion. Now, they were stranded in the Eastern Capital. With the promise of plunder the motive for their venture in the first place, they decided to go to town on those they now deemed their enemies – the people and city of Constantinople. One priest promised the Crusaders if they died in the now “holy cause” of sacking the city, they had the Pope's blessing and would go immediately to heaven. The Pope had said no such thing; on the contrary, he'd forbidden the entire campaign. But people hear what they want, and the Crusaders took that priest's announcement as a license to do whatever they pleased. On Good Friday, 1204, with red crosses on their tunics, the Crusaders sacked Constantinople. For 3 days, they raped and killed fellow believers. The city's statues were hacked to pieces and melted down. The Hagia Sophia was stripped of its treasures. A harlot performed sensual dances on the Lord's Table, singing vile drinking songs. One writer lamented that the Muslims were more merciful than those who bore a cross on their garments.Neither the Byzantine Empire nor Church recovered from those 3 horrible days. The Crusaders ruled the Eastern Empire for the next 60 years. The Eastern emperor set up a new capital in nearby Nicaea, to which many of the people of Constantinople fled.  They remained there until 1261, when an Eastern ruler retook the City.Pope Innocent III tried to prevent the fall of Constantinople, but no one had listened. Afterward, he attempted to reunite the churches, but it was too late. After the 4th Crusade, the Church was shattered into 2 communions. Today we know them as the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches. And while there have been a few attempts to affect a reconciliation recently, the wight of history has served to keep them at odds.
