Let's talk about lupus... Lupus is not a frequently occurring disease if we are to compare it with the likes of diabetes and hypertension. But just because it is not as frequent as the others, doesn't mean that we shouldn't take it as something serious. If you are not prepared for its possible effects, it could definitely cause you problems. Did you know that there are about 1.5 Americans diagnosed with lupus, and there are a total of around 5 million cases worldwide? The concerning thing about it is that 90% of these patients are women, and African-American women are three times more likely to have been diagnosed with this disease than white women. Fortunately, while the actual causes of lupus are still unknown, there are available medications that help manage its symptoms. In this episode, Dr. Berry talks all about lupus and discusses what happens to the immune system of those who have it. He also puts emphasis on how it could affect basically all of the internal organs as he reassures that while there is still no answer to what really causes it, there are ways to trace lupus and treatment options to help those who have been diagnosed. Why you need to check out this episode: Learn about the nature of lupus and how it affects one's health; Understand how severe the complications brought by lupus could get and why it should never be seen as anything despite it being an infrequent disease; and Find out what signs and symptoms you should look out for if you suspect that you have lupus. “In the case of lupus, something happens where your own immune system doesn't recognize that the foreign body it's trying to attack is its actual self.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Notable Quotes: “Lupus is when your immune system says ‘Hey, you know what? I don't recognize myself, so I'm going to turn on myself.” – Dr. Berry Pierre Sign up at www.listentodrberry.com  to join the mailing list. Her sharing her life as a Lupus Warrior is not only a testimony to her personal resilience and strength but also a story of the love between father and daughter. Lupus is a disease that occurs when the body's immune system attacks its own tissues and organs (autoimmune disease). Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including the joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart, and lungs. No two cases of lupus are exactly alike. Although lupus affects people of all ages, it's most often diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 45. Lupus is more common in African Americans, Hispanics, and Asian Americans. Ninety percent (90%) of people living with lupus are women.  Despite the flare-ups that have affected her life Toya has received her BA in communications from Wayne State University, and her MBA from Northwood University. She currently is the Chief Operations Officer for Express Dumpster Services and has numerous volunteer partnerships. She strives to live a waste-free life by campaigning about environmental awareness and advocacy. The month of May is designated as Lupus Awareness Month. Many have little knowledge about this disorder. Some recently heard of it as some of our star athletes or movie stars have come out to share their diagnosis. And others are learning that family members have or perhaps may have demonstrated symptoms of Lupus.  Lupus is a cruel mystery. It is an unpredictable and misunderstood autoimmune disease. It is difficult to diagnose. In some cases it can be hard to live with and a challenge to treat. Lupus has a range of symptoms and can strike without warning. Let talk about it as we educate ourselves as well as others. To join the conversation call 516 387-1914. Awareness can lead to resources.

May 10th was World Lupus Day. So today, we wanted to highlight the disease so that we can get the word out.     Linda Ruescher, author, public speaker and Lupus advocate is our guest today. Linda actually has Lupus as well.   How many people in the US have Lupus?   1.5 Million people in the US.   What is LUPUS?   An auto-immune disease in which your body mistakes other body parts are toxins and invaders and tries to kill them. Lupus doesn’t have one particular body part that it targets. It can go after any part of your body.   Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because:   It flares instead of being chronic The symptoms are the same as other diseases There is no definitive test for Lupus Generally they try to diagnose other things first A rheumatologist can be necessary to get a diagnosis     Lupus is like having a never-ending flu. The symptoms are the same, and the body reacts in the same way.   After 38 years undiagnosed, Linda was diagnosed in 2003. She is treated today with immune-suppressing drugs. She also takes a chemotherapy drug. It is important to know that Lupus is not cancer. The reason chemo drugs are used is because the side effect of weakening your immune system is desirable for Lupus patients.     Lupus primarily affects women in their child-bearing years.    UVA/UVB light can cause flares, so Lupus patients should stay out of the sun.   If you are on Medicare, and IV infusion would be covered under Medicare Part A.     Linda’s book, The 100 Questions and Answers About Chronic Illness. was written after she exhausted the reading of all the other books and getting peeved that she couldn’t find the information she needed.   You can find her book on amazon.com, and in the paperback and Kindle versions.   Lupus Symptoms:   •Fatigue and fever •Joint pain, stiffness and swelling •Butterfly-shaped rash on the face that covers the cheeks and bridge of the nose •Skin lesions that appear or worsen with sun exposure (photosensitivity) •Fingers and toes that turn white or blue when exposed to cold or during stressful periods (Raynaud's phenomenon) •Shortness of breath •Chest pain •Dry eyes •Headaches, confusion and memory loss     If you have 3 or more symptoms, see your Dr. If you aren’t getting anywhere with your Dr, then go see a Rheumatologist (or get a referral to one).     Resources:   www.rheumatology.org - find a Dr. by zip code     Lupus Foundation of America - www.lupus.org   Lupus Florida - www.lupusflorida.com     Contact Linda Ruescher:   On Twitter: www.twitter.com/chronicillness On Facebook: www.facebook.com/Linda Ruescher Email: linda.ruescher@gmail.com   Do you have questions or feedback?
