With a co-host (and former Confessional guest), she is quite familiar with, husband Marco Gonzalez! In this episode, Ralph and Luc spotlight an environmental success story: the Montreal Protocol's role in healing the ozone layer. We draw comparisons to the pitfalls of the IPCC's COP process and try to derive a diplomatic blueprint for climate policy. We look into the science of how ozone and chlorine works in the stratosphere, the history of the activist scientists (Sherwood Roland and Mario Molina) who first sounded the alarm about CFC's destruction of the ozone layer, and the work of technocrats in devising their replacement. We also examine the geopolitical dynamics that were foundational to this planetary victory. Teoscar Hernandez is gone, Eugenio Suarez has been traded, and now Jarred Kelenic, Marco Gonzalez, and Evan White have been moved in what can only be called a salary dump. At this point, sharing our thoughts on this emergency podcast episode felt more than necessary.

Marco Gonzalez left yesterday's game after being hit on his throwing wrist by a 109mph line-drive. X-rays were negative, but it could impact the rotation. Salk, Maura & Justin all made their picks for who they'd like to see the Seahawks select with their first top 10 pick in over a decade but the amount of options (and needs) the Seahawks have makes us all believe that we'll all be wrong. Salk outlines his top 12 draft outcomes before hearing from Brock Huard. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Our normal Tuesday guest Joe Fann joins us for a special NFL Draft check-in live from Las Vegas to set the scene on what it looks like in the city and who he believes the Seahawks will target as their #9 pick. Logan Gilbert & Robbie Ray looked terrific in their first starts of the season but Marco Gonzalez got roughed up and only lasted two innings. Brock Huard joins for his daily appearance to discuss the big moments from Mariners opening weekend and how the Masters made him emotional. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Seeing Robbie Ray pitch yesterday felt like finally opening the Christmas present you got in the winter that you couldn't use until the weather changed, and he did not disappoint. Salk thinks there's a pretty good chance that he will be the Opening Day starter ahead of Marco Gonzalez. With the new Seahawks QB addition, Justin plays "Voicemails" that he "found" on Drew Lock's machine and hears from the Ghost of Seahawks past. Shannon Drayer (in for Brock) shares what she liked about Robbie Ray and Julio after yesterday's game. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Salk starts the third hour with a dive into the Mariners players who had good or decent season in 2021 - Marco Gonzalez, Logan Gilbert, Jarred Kelenic, JP Crawford - and predicts how they'll perform next season and why. He uses Frank Schwindel as an example. 25:33 - Teams that are borderline contending have a difficult decision to make - to compete or not to compete? #Shakespeare. Acquiring elite keeper talent makes the decision quite easy! 34:16 - Chad explains why he thinks Marco Gonzalez is going to help teams win a championship down the stretch 38:54 - Pete suggests Jake Odorizzi as an arm to add not because he is a good pitcher but because his schedule is so favorable 41:40 - A pair of Rockies pitchers could actually help? Two of them?! Chad thinks Antonio Senzatela and Jon Gray might just help bring fantasy gold 46:16 - Pete really likes Steven Matz's schedule the rest of the way and he has been hot lately 48:50 - Below 50% rostered in Ottoneu, Chad suggests Vladimir Gutiérrez as one final option to pursue for some down-the-stretch quality innings 51:28 - Ottoneu Question of the Day: How much money does Chad like to have going into the auction if his team is a complete rebuild? Coming out of the weekend's NFL action, he's also looking at two season-long player props to jump on with Ja'Marr Chase and Clyde Edwards-Helaire. In MLB action tonight, Brad likes a prop on Marco Gonzalez as he faces Oakland. Plus, more baseball picks find their way into Bonus Time.

Marco Gonzalez, is the director of Yahad-In Unum (“Together In One”), is a Paris-based non-profit organization dedicated to discovering genocidal practices wherever they are found around the world, providing documented proof of crimes against humanity, and a leading voice of protest on behalf of all past and present victims of mass murder. In accord with its original mission, Yahad – In Unum unveiled the lost history of World War II, the so-called “Holocaust by Bullets” in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. Yahad – In Unum pioneered a proprietary application of modern forensic research to uncover the killings of more than 2.5 million Jews and Roma and the location of more than 2,300 mass murder sites, while interviewing more than 5,700 witness testimonies on the war crimes of the Nazi Death Squads. They are in a race against time because realistically, no more than 3 years remain to capture the eyewitness accounts of living witnesses and locate the remaining mass killing sites before all living testimony is silenced forever. Marco’s work with YIU also has a deep personal resonance. Growing up in Guatemala, he was keenly aware of the abysmal human rights record in that region, especially the systematic mass killings perpetrated by the military dictatorships of an estimated 200,000 ethnic Mayans, mostly during the early 1980s. Marco's work with the organization is now allowing him to raise awareness of the Holocaust to the Guatemalan population and also the possible parallel to what his home country has experienced in the last 30 years. He helped found the first and only museum of the Holocaust in Central America. The Museum trains hundreds of educators each year in a state-supported curriculum that examines the “Holocaust by Bullets” with more than 50,000 students having visited the Museum so far. In 2017, the Museum was nominated by The Leading Cultural Destination (LCD) Awards for “Best New Museum of the Year – South/Central America” In November of 2017, Marco was instrumental in launching Yahad-In Unum’s "Holocaust by Bullets"- Enhanced Teacher Training seminar to over 50 current and future educators in Denver Colorado. The program is designed to equip educators with the tools and resources to teach the recently discovered history of WWII. In 2018, the program was customized for museum professionals during a weeklong program for over 130 museum guides and staff members of the Auschwitz Museum in Poland. Marco is currently looking to expand the program across the US. We’re so easily influenced by the habits and interests of our friends, you might think that social networks like Facebook would only magnify the power of peer pressure. But recent research from Harvard sociologists Kevin Lewis, Marco Gonzalez, and Jason Kaufman shows that people are more likely to stick with their own interests than we might think. From the abstract of the report Social selection and peer influence in an online social network: "Using data on the Facebook activity of a cohort of college students over 4 years, we find that students who share certain tastes in music and in movies, but not in books, are significantly likely to befriend one another. Meanwhile, we find little evidence for the diffusion of tastes among Facebook friends—except for tastes in classical/jazz music." So while younger folks are likely to build friendships based on certain cultural tastes they’re not likely to warm to their friends tastes so easily. This is surprising, say the researchers, given previous data and assumptions about how tastes spread virally on the net. David Weinberger chatted with Kevin Lewis to get more details on this study.
