Former President Trump narrowly avoided an assassin's bullet. America is on edge. And it feels like we're all dodging news bullets every day. These are incomparably trying times in America, many are divided, and everyone is concerned. Biden's campaign continues to disintegrate—and so does international confidence in US leadership and American morale. The most important, most violent and most divisive election of our lifetime rolls on. And we're all starved for leadership and inspiration. Paul Rieckhoff breaks down this moment, and the most important and latest news, including the evolution of American support for Ukraine, what real American toughness looks like, and what's coming next. And, he tears into all of it with a powerful and inspiring conversation with the smart, impressive and dynamic Jake Wood (@JakeWoodTR). Jake's a social entrepreneur, Marine Corps combat veteran, author and CEO of Groundswell, an innovative new company that democratizes corporate philanthropy and empowers employees to take action. He's also the co-founder of the disaster relief powerhouse non-profit Team Rubicon. And, he's a former sniper and he breaks down the assassination attempt and the catastrophic chain of events that allowed it to happen. He's giving you a sniper's eye view into the Trump shooting, the latest from the campaign trail, the national competition between profit and values, and what's to come this summer and fall environmentally that will require more disaster relief than any time before. In this episode of The Real ResQ, host Jason Quinn is joined by Dakota Meyer, Former U.S. Marine, Sniper, Medal of Honor Recipient, current Firefighter and EMT. Throughout our conversation, Meyer shares his experiences in both the military and as a firefighter. He discusses his decision to join the Marine Corps and the values that drove him to serve. We talk about another mission Meyer had only four days after the Medal of Honor mission. This mission earned Meyer a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Valor. We transition to the fire service where Meyer shares a memorable call that he responded to in this line of duty. He showed up on scene and saw a frantic woman yelling about her son who was stuck in a vehicle underwater. Meyers shares more of his experiences as a firefighter and EMT, highlighting intense rescues and extractions, frequent medical calls, and firefighter competitions. We go into a deeper conversation about the phrase “own the dash”, what that truly represents, and the importance of “owning the dash”. I don't think any career path in military infantry is more associated with killing than a sniper. But how close to reality is that perception? Welcome to the Just Dumb Enough Podcast. A show that acknowledges no one is always an expert, by dispelling misconceptions with real experts. My guest today is Johnathan Taylor. JT was a Marine Scout Sniper with multiple tours of duty in the Middle East before shifting to a job working with the Department of Veteran's Affairs. His experiences overseas paint a picture you may not have considered before, because it's not the primary focus of action movies. And maybe that contributes to the attitude that distance from a horrible event is proportional to the amount of mental trauma one develops. But that's a crazy thought to have! Join me as we learn more about this! ( Www.ScoutSniper.Org ) ( Www.MagicMind.Com/Dumb 20% off with Discount Code: DUMB20) Let's find a hidden position! Thank you all for listening. I know we covered a lot of stuff there, but I hope everyone takes what JT said to heart when he said "trauma is trauma". It really doesn't matter how you developed it, so long as you can remember that it's just as valid for you to have it as anyone else, and that you seek help. "It's not your fault, but it is your responsibility." Especially going through these seasons where having a little helping hand can make all the difference. Speaking of the season, it's almost halfway through the last month, and things are looking promising behind the scenes. Here are the updated rankings: 1. The United States, led by New York, South Carolina, and Oregon. 2. Germany. Still battling the US for number one! With Berlin topping the internal leaderboard. 3. The United Kingdom, with England now way ahead of the others 4. Australia, desperately holding on thanks to New South Wales. 5. Canada, almost back from the dead! Led by previous powerhouse Ontario. That's it for this week! Have a great week, a great weekend, and I'll see you all back here for the next episode! THE CHUCK MAWHINNEY STORY The Marine Corps' deadliest sniper is Chuck Mawhinney with 103 confirmed kills during the Vietnam War. His story went untold for decades, with many books claiming Carlos Hathcock had the most kills at 93. Jim Lindsay, an author and Oregon rancher, befriended Mawhinney as both were hard-working, beer-drinking men in Oregon. Lindsay decided to help get Chuck's story out in a way befitting a man at peace with his role in Nam. Chuck viewed his job as keeping other Marines safe; he was great it. Lindsay tells the story to host Jim Fausone and writes it in “The Sniper” published by St. Martins Press. Available as an audiobook, ebook and in print. CAMP LEJEUNE CLAIMS OVERWHELM DOD The second interview is about a Camp LeJeune water contamination policy guidance put out by the Navy to try to settle the 100,000+ cases. Attorney Catherine Groll, a litigation partner with the Mike Cox Law Firm, talks about the Camp LeJeune Justice Act, the administrative claims process, and the Department of Defense & Navy's new “Public Guidance on Elective Option for CLJA Claims”. The DoD created a matrix so veterans exposed to the Camp Lejeune contaminated water could evaluate whether settling and avoiding litigation is the better route. Groll talks to host Jim Fausone about the inherent problems in the Elective Option and the traps for the unwary veteran. DoD dangles up to $550,000 in front of Marine veterans to start settling the 100,000+ claims that have already been filed.

The United States withdrew the last of its troops from Afghanistan in August of 2021, signaling the end of a nearly 20 year conflict that cost 8 Trillion dollars and the lives of 900,000 people, including over 7,000 U.S. Service Members. The U.S. exit from Afghanistan resulted in the Taliban reestablishing armed control of the country and created a refugee crisis as over 1.5 Million Afghans fled. The withdrawal has been widely considered a disaster and a gross display of incompetent leadership from the President down, echoing similar failures seen at Saigon nearly half a century earlier. SRS is honored to present the story and view point from one of the Marines on the ground in Kabul, just days before the last U.S. Embassy fell–Tyler Vargas-Andrews. On August 26th, Vargas-Andrews was gravely wounded by a suicide bombing at the gates of Kabul's Airport, ultimately losing two limbs as a result of his injuries. This premeditated attack killed 60 Afghans and 13 U.S. Service Members. Number Three— Across the dais another hearing was focused on the disastrous pullout from Afghanistan and featured a young marine sniper that returned alive—barely—missing an arm and a leg— BUT worse than that—he could have stopped the whole bombing that killed 13 Americans—and until now—nobody in the military, the pentagon or anywhere else—ever wanted to hear his after action report— Well that is changing this morning—

One of the key moments that led him to the Marine Corps was the death of Pat Tillman, the legendary NFL Safety who walked away from the League and joined the Army after 9/11, eventually being killed while serving as a Ranger in Afghanistan. Jake found himself leading Marines at the very front end of the “Surge” in Iraq and the bloodiest year of the wars, stepping into a kinetic environment only weeks after arriving in the theater. He was then in Helmand Province in Afghanistan as a sniper.Only two months after leaving the Marine Corps, Jake went on to found the humanitarian support organization Team Rubicon after hastily organizing what he describes as a “Motley Crew” of veterans and doctors to help the people of Haiti after the devastating 2010 earthquake. He recently created another charitable giving business called Groundswell which seeks to democratize philanthropic giving. In 2018, Jake was awarded the Pat Tillman ESPY for service (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7Xef8StXi8), bringing his story full circle from Tillman's death that propelled Jake into this life of service. Things are warming up in America. And hope is finally spreading faster than the virus. It looks like the second half of 2021 will be a whole lot better than the last year. That’s thanks to the dramatic increase in focus, coordination and teamwork. It’s also thanks to courageous leaders like Jake Wood (@JakeWoodTR)--social entrepreneur, Marine Corps combat veteran, author and CEO of the disaster relief powerhouse non-profit Team Rubicon. Jake at the start of the pandemic in Episode 54. One year later, he’s back--and leading a massive effort that has administered 617,649 vaccines nationwide and counting. He launched the Veterans Coalition for Vaccination (VIC). Vaccinating over half a million people in places from Navajo Nation in Kayenta, Arizona to inner city Chicago, the unity of the six of the nation’s top veteran organizations—Team Rubicon, the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Student Veterans of America (SVA), Team Red, White & Blue, The Mission Continues, and Wounded Warrior Project---is a model for American unity. Unitedunder Jake’s leadership, these groups have more than a million veterans at their disposal and created an unprecedented coalition to overcome geographic and socioeconomic barriers and get vaccinations to hundreds of thousands. Things are getting better in much of America. But it’s not all roses. A new mass shooting happened in Colorado, the FBI is still hunting down insurrectionists, domestic extremism threats are on the rise--and there is still tremendous misformation preventing millions from getting vaccinated. Jake joins Independent Americans and our host Paul Rieckhoff (@PaulRieckhoff) for a blunt and inspiring conversation about the most urgent issues facing us all. The former Marine Corp sniper and a gun owner breaks down shootings from a place of deep experience. He’s also a father of a newborn baby girl that faced down dangerous and harrowing heart surgery just days after being born. Jake opens up about what that was like---and what he learned. And the two renowned combat vets rip into how America can find a better future and how to stay strong--even when you’re tired and exhausted. As we all push through the exhaustion of a year of the pandemic, Independent Americans is bringing you more information and inspiration to help you and yours power into a brighter second half of 2021 and whatever comes next. America is still deeply divided. But Independent Americans is a powerful jolt of reason that adds light to contrast all the heat of other political shows. Eddie Penney is an elite Tier 1 operator and entrepreneur. Eddie was a Marine, Navy SEAL (in SEAL Team 2), and member of the storied Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU). This is an incredible inside look at the mind, perseverance, experience, and journey of those who serve at the very tip of the spear, including the moments that seemingly broke Eddie and made him who is today. Eddie shares insights that many would not, including the loss and courage that those of us who were never part of the Tier 1 community can only imagine. Since retiring from the military, Eddie founded and runs The Contingent Group, which provides risk mitigation services and executive protection to clients. He also created the UNAFRAID mindset and has an app called The Den where people can gather to share inspirational stories and seek motivation from others. You'll be excited to learn that Eddie is releasing a book with Keith Wood about Eddie's experiences that's sure to be an incredible read. Instagram @eddie.penney Unafraid and The Den The Contingent Group Show Notes 0:00 - Intro 0:43 - Eddie Bio 1:55 - Interview begins 2:17 - Where did Eddie's ambition come from? 5:02 - Hard to believe that Eddie ever quit anything. It's a great lesson though. 16:52 - A key loss in Eddie's life: his swimming coach Larry Lyons (who still has an award given out each year to the best coaches in Ohio). 19:25 - Marine Corps “boot camp was awesome.” 21:28 - A life changing event (“a switch” from boy to man) at boot camp in Parris Island, South Carolina. 30:18 - Decision to move from the Marines to the SEAL teams. 31:57 - An experience that almost pushed Eddie out of the military trying to get to Marine Sniper school. 36:34 - Another great story of how one man can leave a lasting impact on you by just believing in you. 44:18 - A scary gang attack in Chicago that could have been much worse. 52:40 - Combat Story #1 with SEAL Team 2 going into a house on an operation. 56:03 - How do you find your way to Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU)? A description of assessing into the Tier 1 world. 59:58 - Intangible quality unique to DEVGRU that operators from other SEAL teams might not have. 1:01:23 - Combat Story #2 and how combat became like “crack.” 1:06:20 - Combat Story #3 when moving to assault a building. 1:08:06 - Combat Story #4 when a mortar landed nearby in Mosul, Iraq. 1:10:33 - Combat Story #5 where Eddie is in the stack and he felt a need to move while on an operation in Iraq. This is a tremendous story for those who also battle with “survivor's guilt.” 1:20:19 - Eddie describes “dark seasons” when he dealt with the emotional and psychological challenges that come from the Tier 1 community. 1:25:18 - “Unafraid” motivational mindset with a reference to the Skillet song “Lions,” the idea behind it and how to take on big plans beginning with Step One. 1:30:52 - Contingent Group's origins and focus now (spoiler...it sounds awesome). 1:35:32 - What Eddie carried on missions that had significant meaning to him. 1:37:11 - Would you do it again?
What You'll Hear: Ken started out mowing lawns, pruning Christmas trees and working at McDonalds Ken grew up as a Chreaster, going to church on Christmas and Easter because his Grandma said they should Ken's Dad decided to accept Christ after hearing a sermon, and everything changed for Ken and his family Soon after that, at age 16, Ken accepted Christ as his Savior, but it took a while to figure out what that meant for him Once we're made aware of the penalty of sin, sadly we often have a "not yet" faith and think of Jesus as a 911 call, as opposed to a "right now" faith. Ken's Dad had a "right now" faith, but Ken did not at first and didn't make Jesus his Lord until his '30's "I had to figure out that if it's good and not from God, it's not good at all" "When I joined the Marines everyone was surprised because I was small" We had a term in the Marines "oxygen thief", I didn't want to be that "There was a special moment in boot camp where I knew there was never going to be something to make me quit and tarnish my family name, you could say the same with living the Christian life" Ken served as a Marine Scout Sniper, he was on Presidential security duty for President Clinton and Bush, and served as a Marine Drill Instructor and Marine School Instructor In 2007 Marine Raiders were added to the special forces Break 1 - 24:42 - We've been talking about Ken's fascinating experiences in the Marine Corps. Next we're going to get into his thoughts about changing jobs and his experience in the FCA. "I'm less concerned with what I do anymore, and more concerned with why I'm doing it" Ephesians 1:9-10 The purpose is to bring everything together in Jesus "My entire heart is rooted in making sure that I am trying to draw somebody into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, because in Him is the common ground we can all exist on" Ken is an Area Director for FCA and has 4 counties in Eastern North Carolina The Vision of FCA is that Jesus Christ can transform the world through the influence of coaches and athletes "We make the mistake of compartmentalizing our faith" "Ministry is our responsibility, all of us" "Jesus pitched His tent where we are" Contact kenlovell75 all over social media or look up Coastal NC FCA

This special Independence Day edition of the Empty Cases podcast features a true American hero. He is a man who grew up hunting and shooting, and then joined the Marine Corps right out of high school. He went on to become a Marine sniper as well as a Marine Sniper instructor. He’s a combat veteran, and after serving our country he began teaching the discipline of long-range shooting. I’ve taken several courses from him and not only have I found him to be extremely knowledgeable when it comes to hitting at distance, he has the gift of instruction. He is also the founder of Modern Day Sniper, which offers a wide array educational services for riflemen. Listen to Caylen Wojcik talk about Modern Day Sniper, and about his best and worst shots.

Part 1 of 2. What real man doesn't like a good sniper story? The best one I've ever heard has to be from the book, "Marine Sniper" by Charles Henderson. It shows the mud crawling, ghillied up, shoot 'em up exploits of the Marine Corps sniper legend, Carlos Hathcock. He laid the ground for all modern snipers today. If you're thinking of buying the book, be sure to have it edited for foul language because there's plenty. However, there will definitely be none of that on my podcast.
