If you wanted to have the latest cutting-edge technology in your car in 2007 you wouldn't buy a BMW 7 series or a Mercedes S-Class. You'd own a 2008 Ford Focus with SYNC. It was the crowning achievement of Microsoft's Automotive team; a device that plays music from media players and supports hands-free phone calls. It was revolutionary at the time and was included in over 1 million vehicles. But it almost never happened. It was the last roll of the dice from a team that had spent years in the wilderness trying to break into the car market.

In this episode, Hannah fights LA's worst traffic using the Mercedes-Benz Level 3 Drive Pilot system that beat Tesla to advanced hands-free driving. Matt drives the Nissan Z Nismo Edition around Manhattan but he barely fits inside the cabin, and he really needs a manual gearshift. Then, Hannah and Matt discuss the merits of electric sedans like the BMW i7 and Porsche Taycan--can you cross-shop those against a Volvo XC90? Plus, Matt wants a Porsche 911 S/T or a Porsche 911 R, but Hannah says the S/T is a cash grab and the R is wildly expensive even if you can find a used one. And maybe the Porsche 911 Carrera T is better pound for pound, anyway?     Follow Hannah and Matt on Instagram:     @HannahElliottxo     @mattmiller1973     Find more on Bloomberg.com, Bloomberg Radio  I'm Hannah Elliott and I'm Matt Miller. This is hot pursuit. All right. Coming up on the podcast, we're gonna talk about a self driving Mercedes, the new drive pilot technology. Hannah tested it out. Have they beaten Tesla to the punch. We're also going to talk about the BMW I seven. This is the fully electric version of their seven series, their flagship executive limousine. Hannah's driving it this week. I have driven it before and it gave me ideas for the next car that I need. Plus, we'll talk about Porscha. They came out with earnings that were obviously good because they're Porsche. I'm also driving a much cheaper I guess caman competitor in a way that we'll talk about, and they could electrify them a con. I want an ST. I tried to get a nine to eleven R. There's so much to talk about in terms of Porsche. But hey, let's start with the Mercedes Drive Pilot, which is their level three autonomous driving system. Tell us about it. Yeah, I have to say this is the big deal because Tesla has been talking about their full self driving for years and they do sell something that they're calling full self driving FSD, but it actually requires a bit of hands on the wheel and attention on the road. So Mercedes swoops in with something they're calling drive Pilot, which is level three driving, which does not require your hands on the wheel ever, and doesn't require your eyes on the road. So literally you can sit back and read a book, or watch a video, or have video conference calls, or watch a movie play on your phone. So it is kind of a big deal. There are limitations that we can talk about, but as somebody who's not especially excited about the idea of self driving in general, I have to say it did kind of win me over. I was pretty impressed. Yeah, so let's talk first about the benefits of self driving technology before we get into the limitations on the Mercedes system, and also the cost, which I think is interesting. You live in one of the most congested places on the planet, so for you it can actually like make your life better. Yeah, that's really true. And I actually when I tested it, it was on the Tin which basically goes, you know, from downtown out to the ocean, and I used to drive that way every day to work. It is some of the most horrible traffic in town. And the benefit was that I was in my car, but it felt like I had a driver, and that was a huge thing for me. I mean, the idea of having a driver is such a great luxury, and this technology, this drive pilot, really did make it feel like that. It drives the car for you. It only drives the car for you on highways that have two lanes or more and that have a solid barrier down the center. So this is already getting into some of the imitations. But the benefit is I got a lot of things done on my way to work, like answering emails, I was looking at videos, I was playing on Instagram. That's a huge benefit. And in a more general sense, I was a lot less peeved and annoyed by the time I got to the office, having not have had to fight with you know, people that I think are terrible drivers. I think we can agree that Prius drivers are the worst. I did not have to fight these people on my way into the office, and that was a huge benefit because the car took care of it. Yeah. So I mean for me, for my commute, I drive into Manhattan from Scarsdale every day. It's an hour in the morning, really and an hour on the way back. And I like to pretend that I can drive a lot myself, but the truth is I'm mostly in bumper to bumper traffic, and it would be awesome if I could do work, you know, while while I was driving. The problem is I'm sometimes slowed to a halt, like when I'm heading on, for example, to Henry Hudson. But also there are times when I'm doing sixty you know. It's like back and forth, back and forth. And one of the main limitations of this system I know from reading your story on the Bloomberg Terminal, is that it doesn't work above forty miles an hour. So I just can't imagine how it would work for me, because it would be awesome for a few minutes and then all of a sudden, what it just stops working. Yeah, actually, yes, that's exactly right. It is awesome. And then if you need to speed up and you push the gas or you even want to change lanes, it just cancels out the system. So this is actually an interesting note because level two driving will change lanes for you. It's kind of like a glorified cruise control or if you've heard of jam super cruise. It's basically that Level three will fully drive the car for you and you don't have to touch the steering wheel at all, but it won't change lanes. And it also is only legal right now in California and Nevada and Germany, so there are limitations. Yeah, and that I mean to me, it's kind of like a deal breaker because, yeah, I need it to be able to go more than forty that's really slow if you think about it. Yeah, but I guess it'll come. As you wrote that, they're pushing to get to eighty miles an hour as the next milestone, which is going to be I think when it really works, well maybe in LA people will drive faster than that on the ten. But I think one of the coolest parts of the story is that they have like special designated tail lights that are not police blue, but they're kind of like lavender, And there's a picture in the story and I thought that looks so cool. So eventually you're going to be able to know when other people have automated driving on Yeah, those lights are very cool, and they're actually primarily so that law enforcement know that this car is being driven automatically and not by a human. It's the lights actually have not yet been approved for new models, but they're trying to get Mercedes is trying to get that color approved. You know, they have to run everything through the standards and regulations to make them legal. But on these tester cars that we had, they did have these like very it's like almost a teal, just like you say, And that is largely so law enforcement know that the car is being driven autonomously and not so. You know, if a cop sees you and you're like watching a video on your phone, he doesn't pull you over. Basically all right to me. The only other problem with this is, you know, I like to do extreme tailgating, so I'm right on your bumper if you're in front of me in the left lane, because I don't think you should be in the left lane. It's only for passing, and I'm the one who's trying to pass. Also, I don't like it when someone ducks in front of me, you know, trying pass on the right and cut in front of me. So rude. And it doesn't follow that closely, does it. No, it doesn't. And if you try to follow that closely, it'll just cancel the system. So yeah, I don't I agree with you. I don't like that these new programs don't allow aggressive driving, because sometimes we do need to drive aggressively. I like your term extreme tailgating. That sounds like a hobby kind of and maybe that should go on our list of hobbies. I've taken that from college football. Yeah, fandom. That's that's very good. And you know, I think these are all steps forward. Level five is the top level of autonomous driving, and that is basically a robotax, you know, something that totally drives itself for you. So we're at level three. It's a new threshold that's been passed. They're trying to get it up to speed, no pun intended, and you know we're moving in that direction. Well it is sometimes you really do feel like you need a driver. So let's move on to the next topic, and that is what are you driving this week? You have the BMW I seven, which is the EV version of the you know, legendary seven series. I had a chance at it, and I have serious thoughts. But tell me what you're thinking about driving it right now? Well, you know what, I surprisingly kind of liked it and currently like it, and it's really funny because last week I had the BMW XM was not so much of a fan. That review is coming out next week where I'll really go on my rant about the XM. So I kind of got into the I seventh, you know, with a little bit of a cringe in my neck. But I started sort of listing out all the things that I was thinking about the I seven, and I looked at the list and I realized, wait a second, these are all positives pretty much. You know, it's very comfortable, it's large, and I think if you want a large car, this is this is great. It certainly feels more luxurious than competitors like the Porscha Ta Can or any of the Tesla models. I think it actually is priced pretty fairly. Starting prices around one hundred and seven thousand. There are tons of ops, a bunch of executive packages you can get that will make it a lot more expensive, but I actually think the starting price is pretty fair. Does this ring any bells for what you thought about it, Matt? Yeah? For me, mostly positives. I absolutely loved it, and I feel like my test drive in the I seven was almost life changing. Wow. Oh, I love the brand. I'm a huge fan of BMW and I always have been. I now have a greater appreciation for big executive limousines, and I didn't really give them much thought previously. No, I was in Stuttgart with all the Colonias when they put out the new S class, and it was cool to be in Stuttgart and to be with Ola, But I didn't really care about the S class, like I'm not buying one of those things. But this, to me kind of showed what's possible there. First are some negatives, though, I think it's the ugliest of all the executives. Sedan's, I mean, the split headlights up front reminds me of a Fiat Multipla, and I don't I don't know how the designer, the designers at BMW have been getting away with what they've been getting away with since Chris Bangle. I just don't get who approves all that junk. The other thing is not not specific to BMW, but with all electric cars. It makes me nervous watching the range tick down and realizing that at some point I'm going to have to fight some other adults for a position at a charger, or find that all the chargers that I just got to are broken. Or realized that charging it at my house is going to take like thirteen hours, like you know, just it's not a good experience for me yet. Electric electric car the range thing for sure is real. I have to I actually think it looks kind of cool. I don't know what color you had when you drove it, but I've got this sort of matt blacked out everything black. It's brown, real what it's a very dark brown. Yeah, I had the same color. I love it. Yeah, see, I think that's so cool. Well, I actually think, you know, Adrian von hoydnk is the is the current design director, and he I do like I do like his esthetic. I mean, I remember Chris Bangle was a bit controversial back in the day. People he was polarizing back in the day. And sometimes I think these things tend to age better than when they're first presented on the market. So the looks didn't bother me. My question is what did you think about the sound? This sort of fabricated electric were you know? And so in other electric cars the sound has made a big impression on me. In the EQUS by Mercedes, I really liked the fake sound that they pump into the cabin they've got to make it have some kind of sound so that you know you're driving, and so that other people know you're driving. I didn't notice it in the BMW, just because I was so positively impressed by the driving manners of this giant, hulking vehicle. It was so much fun to drive. Part of that is down to the electric drive train, which is I think flawless. But another part of it is that BMW focuses so much on the structure, on the rigidity, on you know, they what's their tag one, the ultimate driving machine. It really is true, whether you're talking about the the two series, which I love, or the seven series, which I love. I also really like the way what do you call the UX you know, the way you interact with the car's infotainment system. I've loved it since day one of the eye drive and I still love it. And obviously the materials, the build quality, like it's all a one in my opinion, Yeah, yeah, I agree, I'd buy it. I wish this daring was a little bit tighter. I think it feels slightly numb, but then I go back to, well, this is a huge executive sitan and honestly, if that means that the backseat is just really smooth and totally cocoon from the world. Then that's fine. I'm not going to like quibble with that. Really, So my house, so the reason that changed my life is that we have, you know, a baby now and a baby on the way, and so my life is all about rear facing car seats. And we have a Volvo XC ninety as the kind of family truckster at my house. But the Mercedes, sorry, the BMW seven series, I think is a Volvo XC ninety killer. And no one else is cross shopping these cars, but I think they should be because the stretch rear of an executive sedan. And it's true about I'm sure the S class or the S eight two is perfect for rear facing car seats. There's never enough room in even the biggest SUVs, the biggest European SUVs, for rear facing car seats without moving the passenger seat forward or moving the driver's seat forward, and so I think this is ideal. Plus, you know, it's the top of technology and luxury and everything that a car maker can do. The BMW seven Series, same with the Mercedes S Class, but they are so expensive to start I think the the BMW M seven sixty, which is the one I love, just they just stopped making it. With the V twelve. It was one sixty five to start, and I've seen them two or three years old with twenty or thirty thousand miles. They're clearly coming off lease for sixty five. Wow, it's just massive depreciation. So now it puts it in the range of an XC ninety plus. I get it's a BMW. It's so much more fun to drive, and in the case of the M seven sixty, it's a V twelve and it's the last one they're ever gonna make. So my next car is gonna be I'm gonna say it a BMW M seven sixty as soon as I convince my wife that she doesn't need evolthough the BMW is just as safe and even better if you have two kids. I like, I really like that. I think you've convinced me. I can totally see that, And I can also see the partners sort of saying, well, it's not enough, and you know it doesn't have the catch back loader. But I can actually see it. I can kind of buy what you're saying. Let's go to topic number three, which is like Porsche in general. Because I have a million questions for you about Porsche, I will first say that I'm this week, I'm driving the little Nissan Z and I'm actually driving the supposedly pre production version of the Nismo edition for next year. It's an awesome car. I've driven the ZB four. I love the total late seventies early eighties styling, but I think it needs a stick in order to be fun. There's no way I'm squeezing myself into something that tiny unless I'm using a manual transmission. Also, I'm just too big that they clearly made it for the Japanese market. Americans just don't fit in them. How tall are you, Matt, I'm six four. And the reason I bring up the Nissan with the Porsche's that I think it's a pretty clear competitor to a Cayman or a Boxer right in that it's just a very small, dedicated sports car. It's obviously much cheaper and doesn't have the status of a Porsche. But if you're in the market for one of these tiny little things, I don't think it matters that it's front engine instead of mid engine. I would put it up against a Cayman any day. Yeah, that's cool. Did they say what the Nismo Edition gets? You? Like? Is what extra? Does that mean? They probably do get just paint. I wasn't paying attention. No, I think it's more than more than paint. But I quickly passed it along to Barry Ritholtz, and because his wife, I think, really wants to buy one, so I thought might as well give him a chance in it. But it's a competitor to the Cayman, although probably not a lot of people will be cross shopping the two, they're not in the same exact price range. In terms of Porscha. I just have a million questions for you. So what do you think about the Taikon? I mean, what do you think about Porsche's uh drive into electric? Well, I think the Porscha Tekon was the first electric sedan that was really better than Tesla and was the first one that really showed what a proper professional car company with heritage and real German engineering can do when they decide to go electric. Because before that we had obviously some other electric vehicles out there, but if you wanted a quote unquote luxury electric sedan, Tesla was the only option. And so when Porsche finally brought up the Taykon and I remember that debut it was like twenty eighteen, I believe at Niagara Falls. It was a big deal. It was like finally, finally, like the actual big guys who've been doing this for seventy five years are going to bring a competitor, so we're not stuck having to satisfy our craving for evs with Tesla, which is not a luxury experience. Yeah, no, it's very spartan. I don't know if Portia has cracked the the range nut, because it seems like that's one of the things that Elon Musk has really been able to do. But yeah, I went to the I went to the launch on the Polish border is where they had it in Germany. I rode my multi Strata out there and I was impressed. But Walter Rural, who was the you know, the famous Elly driver, he was testing it, apparently for Portia, and he made a comment some something along the lines of it's the greatest car I've ever driven in terms of power, delivery and handling, but I would never buy one, which I thought it totally sums up the way I feel about it as well. That's fine, and honestly, I'd expect nothing less from this old guard of driver, of racing champion, especially someone who made their entire career on you know, a certain engine. I I would expect nothing less from him. It's definitely a different proposition, but I know that the market wants it, you know. I noticed in Q three earnings sales of the Taie Hun are up more than fifty percent year over year, and so I think as long as as many as Porschia can make, they will probably be able to sell. Now I want to ask about some of the special editions because when they came out with the nine to eleven are I was like, I felt like I was at the front of the line, or at least one of the first people to know about it. And when I tried to buy all, they said, no, it's already been sold out. Now they have another real purest nine to eleven in the st, which is exactly what I want. You know, I don't want any of the crazy technological enhancements. I just want a big, naturally aspirated flat six in the back and you know, a nine to eleven that can steer. Why do they charge so much and make so few of these perfect vehicles and then only offer us the vehicles that we know aren't nearly as good. The short answer is because they can. And I have to say, I love your impulse to go for the nine to eleven R, because, as opposed to the ST, which I'll get to in a second, the R has a specific vehicle from nineteen sixty seven that it's taken off of. If you remember, the sixty seven nine to eleven R was a actual race car. They made fewer than twenty five of them. It was an actual real car, never available to the public, but it actually was an actual racing car. Now, the STS from the seventies were not actually a real car. You could sort of buy a nine to eleven and spec it to ST specs. It's a combination of the nine to eleven S and the nine to eleven T, but there was no actual portion nine to eleven ST sold. You had to kind of spec it yourself from the factory. So the fact that Porsche is now offering almost three hundred thousand dollars nine to eleven ST with a very unfortunate optional heritage livery on it just seems a bit like a cash grab. The new nine to eleven R I could kind of see. They made nine hundred and ninety one of them because it was built on a nine to nine to one chassis, so that's, you know, sort of creative. But those I just checked on bring a trailer this morning. One sold in June for almost four hundred thousand dollars and that's used. So the nine to eleven RS, I can actually see the reason. But the st to me, feels like a straight up cash grap and they've got the same engine in that that they have in the GT three RS, so it's like, spend less money, get an actual proper GT three. That's my rant. I think I would go for the tea at this point because I'm getting old enough. Yes, the Caarer tee is a nine to eleven is a thinking man's nine eleven because you get everything you need nothing you don't. Also, it's way more livable. Let's not forget to use stands for touring. It's way more livable. It's honestly like the smart adult choice. It's a better compliment that I've been given in years. But I appreciate the compliment. We have the same choice in nine to eleven New nine to elevens. That does it for the podcast this week. I want listeners to know you can tune into my radio show every weekday from ten am to one pm. You can watch me on Bloomberg TV from one pm to two pm most weekdays as well, and I'm on Instagram at Matt Miller nineteen seventy three. I'm on Twitter on the same handle, but I don't really tweet that much. And if you want to find me, you can find me on Bloomberg dot com under Bloomberg Pursuits. That's where all of my car coverage lives. You can find me on Instagram at Hannah Elliott XO. That's Hannah Elliott with two l's, two t's, two h's QE of everything. And you can also find me on on Twitter splash x, although I'm not on there very much these days either. All right, catch Hot Pursuit again next week, same time, same place. I'm Matt Miller, I'm Hannah Elliott, and this is BloombergSee Entry-level means different things to different people. For some, an entry-level new vehicle is like Ford's Maverick or the Mitsubishi Mirage: affordable, reasonable and, generally, plentiful. Though every model from every automaker has an entry point, and some of those or better equipped than others. For the top Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, it's the S500: a six-cylinder powered sedan that's a great platform for the folks at Maybach to work their magic. Well, even the lowly S500 doesn't skimp on comfort or luxury. Powered by the aforementioned six-cylinder, which displaces 3.0-liters while generating 429 hp. That power travels through a nine-speed automatic before hitting the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. While the base S500 doesn't sport the wild hyper screen, the Mercedes S-Class interior is more than posh enough to keep your in-laws happy. In this episode of Quick Spin, Wesley Wren puts the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S500 through its paces. Wren walks you around the S500 while showing off some of its features, and highlights its interior. After that, Wren takes you along for a live drive review. Between those segments, Mark Vaughn joins to share his experience with the latest S-Class, and chat with Wren. Vaughn and Wren discuss some of their favorite and least favorite, parts of the S500. The two also give the lay of the land for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class lineup. Closing the show, the two explain what makes this S500 special.

It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to.   Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too.   Welcome to new Patrons. New PRODUCER MAVRICK KNOLES. New PRODUCER TIM MADLER who said "Thanks to you I just celebrated my first year in my Chevy Bolt. Love it and I can't wait for the upgrade! ". And PRODUCER JEAN MICHEL. New PRODUCER GARETH MARSH. New PRODUCER AARAN STENT.   Email from Mattias Ärlebrandt from Sävar, Sweden. "I don't know if you notised the sales figures for VW ID.3 in Sweden during december. It was the most sold car of december, ICE cars included. The ID.3 also was the most sold pure EV of the year by around 25% agaist number two that was Tesla model 3. I've also notised that we still have selfcarging hybrids in sweden! See the Lexus ad that i attacht."   NIO ET7 UNVEILED "the new NIO ET7. It’s a pure-electric, autonomously capable saloon from the same manufacturer that brought us the EP9 hypercar – and it positioned in its domestic Chinese market as a home-grown alternative to the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class. It’s available to pre-order in China now, with prices starting from ¥448,000 (around £51,000) for the entry-level model and climbing to ¥526,000 (roughly £60,000) for the flagship variant. The first examples are expected to reach Chinese buyers in early 2022." writes Autoexpress: "Like the recent EC6 SUV, NIO also has plans to expand the ET7’s market out West. An official European launch date for the saloon is yet to be confirmed, but it sounds inevitable, as NIO has designed the EV to meet both Chinese and Euro NCAP safety regulations. Its powertrain comprises an electric motor on each axle for a combined output of 644bhp and 850Nm of torque – more than a Lamborghini Huracan Performante. This is enough for a claimed 0–62mph time of 3.9 seconds. Buyers will have their choice of three battery sizes – 70kWh, 100kWh and 150khW, which provide maximum range figures of 310, 435 and 620 miles respectively" (NEDC)   "Nio says the ET7 also features a range of advanced driver assistance features that will enable it to offer autonomous driving. The system uses 33 high-performance sensing units, which it says are built into the body of the car for optimum design, with its autonomous systems powered by an advanced computer system capable of generating 8GB of data per second." reports Autocar; "s with existing Nio models, the interior dashboard is dominated by a large touchscreen – 12.8in in this case – which can be operated by Nio’s Nomi in-car AI system."   And as it's Nio, battery swapping is an option, as per MOtor Authority: "As is the case with Nio's other vehicles, the ET7 can have its battery swapped, via Nio's own network of Nio Power battery stations. You simply drive into the station and an automated system handles the swap. Nio has hundreds of locations for battery swapping in China and has announced the deployment of a second-generation version of the system."   https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/news/354006/pure-electric-and-autonomous-nio-et7-saloon-unveiled   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/chinese-ev-firm-nio-unveils-et7-saloon-new-flagship   https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1130883_2022-nio-et7-price-specs-review-photos-info#   BURSTS OF ACCELERATION IN TESLA VEHICLES CAUSED BY DRIVERS "More than 200 incidents involving Teslas unexpectedly accelerating and crashing were the fault of drivers confusing their brake and accelerator pedals, not a defect with the electric vehicles, the federal car safety agency said Friday." according to Washington Post: "Brian Sparks, the investor who filed the petition, said the rates of complaints about sudden acceleration incidents in Teslas were “astonishingly high” compared with other kinds of vehicles but that he accepted the findings of the federal review. He supplied records of 232 complaints involving Tesla’s Model S and Model 3 sedans and the Model X SUV, and the agency identified another 14. But after reviewing the available data, NHTSA concluded that the incidents were caused by drivers not the vehicles themselves."   https://www.washingtonpost.com/transportation/2021/01/08/tesla-brakes/   72% PLUGIN VEHICLE MARKET SHARE IN THE NETHERLANDS! "The Netherlands had an amazing 30,860 plugin registrations in December, a 34% increase over the previous all-time record, set in the same month of last year, which itself was beating a 4 year old record." says CleanTechnica: "This amazing result translated into a Norway-like 72% plugin vehicle (69% BEV) market share last month, pulling the 2020 plugin share to 25% (21% BEV), well above the 15% of 2019 and the 6% of 2018. This share gains even another dimension when we realize that BEVs represented 82% of registrations in 2020 and 96%(!) in December alone. Of course, the higher taxation of BEVs in 2021 is the major reason for this December peak"   https://cleantechnica.com/2021/01/09/72-plugin-vehicle-market-share-in-the-netherlands/   SHELL TO REPLACE UK SERVICE STATION FORECOURT WITH EV CHARGING HUB "A fully operational Shell service station in Fulham, West London could soon be entirely replaced by electric vehicle chargers, making it the first to do so in the UK." says Fuel Incided: "The EV-only hub, for which a planning application will be submitted by the end of February, will consist of 10 150kW DC fast chargers situated under solar panel canopies complete with flower beds."   https://fuelincluded.com/2021/01/shell-replace-uk-service-station-forecourt-ev-charging-hub/   FORD MUSTANG MACH-E PRODUCTION EXCEEDS 3,000 A MONTH "According to the official sales data for the U.S., Ford has delivered the first three Mustang Mach-E to customers in the last days of December. It's not much, but enough to formally meet the promise that sales will begin by the end of 2020. The most important news is what the future will hold and the foundation for it is the production. As it turns out, Ford already produced more than 6,700 Mach-E, including more than 3,000 in December." according to InsideEVs: "Assuming December production, the annual rate is at over 37,500 a year, but it will probably further increase. The initial target was for 50,000 units in the first year (over 4,150 a month)."   https://insideevs.com/news/464723/ford-mustang-mache-production-exceeded-3000-month/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK   RAJEEV NARYAN "Although there will be some buyers who hold of an EV purchase in anticipation of improving tech, by in large I don’t think this measurably  will slow EV adoption.  I say this for 2 reasons. Firstly, most EV buyers are coming from ICEs, and the EVs they have the option to buy now are so much better than what they already have. Secondly EVs available now are more that adequate for the typical 5 - 7 years people own cars for. My Chevy Bolt from 2017 is still a great car!"   HAI FROM RIVERSIDE, CA "I did buy a model 3 in 2019. I don’t want to wait because if I wait I would wait forever. What if I die and never get to enjoy the EV. And i am contributing to a green environment by driving an EV "   PHILIP TRAUTMAN at COLE CREEK CONSULTING "As someone who already owns an EV, I’m holding off buying another (or trading in my existing Tesla Model 3) until range increases. At 300 miles (at 100% charge), the range of our Model 3 should be more than adequate, but it’s still a bit limiting due to the rural nature of our state combined with very cold winter conditions. None of this winter driving stuff will really be an issue once we have a garage, but it’s made it clear that a car with greater range would be worth having, also given that distances are long in Wyoming and charging infrastructure is still sparse. I’m holding out for greater than 350 miles of range but 400 would be better. I’m hoping that with the 4680 batteries, Tesla’s Model Y will get there eventually."   GRANTON SMITH "I think this is definitely a thing - although in Australia for me the choice was easy, as I would not currently consider owning anything other than a Tesla because of the lack of options in other charging networks. I made a conscious effort not to wait to buy a Tesla because of any talk of a new feature "coming soon", their products iterate so quickly that if you were always waiting for the next big thing, you'd ALWAYS be waiting."   ERIC HANSEN from MINNEAPOLIS "First caveat, I am not typically an early adopter.  In my opinion and experience the rapid pace of technology exchange has definitely caused a delay in purchase of an all-electric vehicle.  I typically buy and operate a car for 6-10 years.  I drive too many miles annually to lease and prefer to hold onto my cars for longer.  So I’ve been waiting to make a purchase until the cars reach a point of price stabilization and feature integration that will keep me happy for 6+ years.     Currently I have a Rivian on order.  It won’t be available for another 18-20 months, but I am hesitant to purchase a different EV fearing that the resale price will drop significantly as new technology is deployed on the newest models.  So I’m driving my 2005 Saab 9.3 past 200,000 miles. On the other side of the issue, a good friend is on his fifth EV already, owning them 1-2 years.  He is able to justify the expense of trading up for the evolving technology he wants"   ED CORTEEN "I need an EV with towing capability so am waiting for one to actually be available, Have looked at the ID.4 this is OK but related to the EH story charging it on a trip would be problematical so I am most likely to go over to the dark side and get a Model Y!"   ROBERT in BRISBANE "I believe most people now lease cars in the UK. Not having the latest and greatest tomorrow is irrelevant if you can just hand the car back at the end of the lease period. Leasing is less common in Australia.  If the car is excellent today, which my Model 3 P- is, then I will happily drive it in 10 years time regardless of what appears in the next 5 to 10 years.  I drive an EV for green reasons so I want an car that will last 10 or even 20 years. Even if the driving range drops by 100km my car will still be fine in 2035 and beyond. A lot of the new model stuff is bling.  Nice to have’s. What matters is practical and sufficiently convenient driving range and charging."   MATTI JOUHKIMO "No. Tech always improves and it's never "good time" to jump in. And electric cars are "good enough" already. Enough range, enough infrastructure etc. So no. Buy and enjoy the OTA updates and constantly improving car."   BRENDAN HUTCHINS "Tech improvements haven’t stopped me from wanting to get an EV. Months after buying my first house, and my first ability to charge my car, the Cybertruck was announced, my dream vehicle as a residential remodeler, so I dropped my deposit instantly and driving my Toyota Tacoma until I can level up.  And seeing the way a Tesla gets updates, I’m not worried about it being obsolete either."   JARED SLUSSER "Normally I would be one to wait until the next model year is released to get the new features.  But the cars that Tesla produced today are literally better than the cars they made yesterday. Everyday the car is better than the day before in terms of software and hardware. This makes it nearly impossible for other brands to compete or to benchmark Tesla. If another manufacturer designs a better car, then Telsa changes their design in a matter of weeks to compete. Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Monday 30th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport.   LONDON POWERS AHEAD IN RANKING OF BEST CITIES FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLE INFRASTRUCTURE "London has been revealed as the best city for electric vehicle (EV) charging points, beating environmentally conscious cities such as Oslo and Berlin." according to City AM: "In the UK, London has sailed ahead of Manchester, ranked 18th place; Edinburgh (31st) and Leeds (35th). Internationally, its closest rival was Amsterdam, closely followed by fellow Netherlands-based city Rotterdam in third place, while it comfortably beat Oslo, despite Norway having more EV sales per capita than any other country in the world. At the other end of the scale, cities such as Cape Town, Cairo, Sao Paulo and Seoul scored zero on the index because they lacked charging points or received low funding for EV initiatives." "In March the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, unveiled plans to install a further 100 rapid charging points to the 2,000 standard charging points already installed in the capital."   …THE TOP 10 London, United Kingdom Amsterdam, Netherlands Rotterdam, Netherlands Berlin, Germany Hamburg, Germany Oslo, Norway New York, United States Lisbon, Portugal Munich, Germany Barcelona, Spain     TOP 5 MARKETS FOR ALL-ELECTRIC CARS IN EUROPE Starting a geography lesson: "Norway is not the biggest European country, in fact it’s one of the smallest in terms of population, but still manages to stay on top the all-electric car market in Europe." writes Mark Kane for InsideEVs: "The rolling 12-month total sales for the top five markets, provided by EagleAID, shows that Germany is consistently growing for a strong second after Norway, while France and the UK seem stuck for some time. The Netherlands is on the rise, too"   …THE TOP 5 Norway – 38,600 Germany – 33,600 France – 26,700 UK – 14,500 Netherlands – 12,700   https://insideevs.com/top-5-markets-for-all-electric-cars-in-europe/   BYD BOOMING IN THE NORDICS – BIG ELECTRIC BUS ORDER FOR BYD IN SWEDEN "After the recent Norwegian order for 42 articulated BYD electric buses for Oslo, now follows another large order from Sweden for a total of 24 electric buses." says Electric Cars Report. Isbrand Ho, Managing Director at BYD Europe: “BYD’s efforts in the Scandinavian market are paying off. Our recent orders in not only the Swedish but also in the Norwegian market have made BYD one of the leaders in the electric bus field. Winning this order gives us more confidence to win more in this important market. We are looking forward to turning Scandinavia even greener.”   https://electriccarsreport.com/2018/07/byd-booming-in-the-nordics-big-electric-bus-order-for-byd-in-sweden/   CHINA LAUNCHES PILOT EV BATTERY RECYCLING SCHEMES "China will launch a pilot electric vehicle battery recycling scheme in 17 cities and regions, the industry ministry said, with Beijing keen to head off an emerging pollution threat." according a Reuters report over the weekend: "the cities and regions would encourage car producers to establish recycling service outlets and cooperate with battery producers, used car dealers and scrap merchants to build regional recycling systems. It said the entire industrial chain needed to be fully mobilized in order to ensure that EV batteries were recovered. It would strictly control the number of new enterprises involved in battery recycling and make full use of existing recycling bases in China in order to promote sustainable development in sector." "Data published by the industry ministry this week showed that China produced 413,200 new energy vehicles (NEV) in the first six months of this year, up 94.9 percent compared with a year earlier. Sales more than doubled to 412,000 units over the period."   https://www.reuters.com/article/us-china-autos-batteries/china-launches-pilot-ev-battery-recycling-schemes-idUSKBN1KF375   TESLA REDEFINES ‘LUXURY’ SEGMENT AS INDUSTRY SHIFTS FOCUS TO TECHNOLOGY Simon Alvarez at Teslarati has been asking why Tesla are doing so well against the likes of Mercedes S Class and BMW 7 Series: "How then, are Tesla’s premium vehicles, which adopt a minimalistic theme and an almost spartan interior, performing so well in a market where more is usually better? By invoking a sense of luxury through deep software integration, of course."   "I picked up this beauty 2 days ago and I can't say enough great things about it. Thank you @elonmusk and @Tesla for making the future fun and green! This car is the equivalent of ice cream flavored vegetables. Who knew being environmentally friendly could be so fun! pic.twitter.com/5filRGQQOW - Paul Storost (@PaulStorost) July 27, 2018   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-luxury-amenities-software-integration/   FROM AN ASTON MARTIN TO A TESLA MODEL S: WHY ONE OWNER MADE THE CHANGE Autocar ask: "Why doesn’t Tesla do what just about every other car maker does and force sales by inflating discounts and trade-in allowances, and hang the consequences? It’s not as if it doesn’t need the income. At the end of the first quarter of 2018, the company’s debt stood at £1.5 billion." Well Tesla replied: "“We don’t discount because Tesla is a mission-driven company. We want to accelerate the transition to sustainable transport and energy, but not by profiting on things like vehicle trade-ins and discounting. The aim of our trade-in programme is to get the best price for the customer, not for Tesla. There is no profit angle. The service is to help customers get out of their current car and into a Tesla. There is no negotiating; simply the best price, first time.” "It’s why Tesla claims not to run its service departments as a profit centre (it says it runs them at break-even) and why it doesn’t insist on an annual service to maintain its new-car warranty. It recommends having one, but says that missing a service will not invalidate the warranty"   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/aston-martin-tesla-model-s-why-one-owner-made-change   TESLA IS MAKING A $1500… SURFBOARD? "Tesla is no stranger to branded merch. Its got the standard company swag — the hats, the shirts, and the mugs. It’s got quirkier stuff, like miniature Teslas for kids and USB chargers shaped like the Superchargers that juice up their vehicles. And now they’ve got… surfboards?" writes Greg Jumparaak for TechCrunch. Product Description "“Designed by the Tesla Design Studio in collaboration with Lost Surfboards and Matt “Mayhem” Biolos, surfboard shaper for World Surf League Championship athletes. The Limited Edition Tesla Surfboard features a mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finishes used on all our cars. The deck is reinforced with light-weight “Black Dart” carbon fiber, inspired by the interiors in our cars, and featuring tonal logos in subtle contrast gloss.”   COMMUNITY Emails   You can listen to all previous 195 episodes of this podcast on iTunes, Google Play, Spotify, YouTube, TuneIn, Stitcher, and the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically. EV News Daily - Electric Car Podcast

Tuesday 1st May 2018. FIRST DRIVE: BMW i8 ROADSTER Both of BMW i Series cars are unique in terms of having nothing obvious to compare them to. And when I say both maybe I should say three – as the BMW i3S is not a thing, being lower, wider and with a bit more squirty. And if I’m going that, we should four models, because the BMW Roadster in i8 form is an updated car with a missing roof, for full wind-in-you-hair / bald patch driving. As first seen at the LA Motor Show in 2017 we now know what it’s like behind the wheel. It’s interesting when a slew of articles all drop into my Google Alerts inbox at the same time, it normally means a car maker has had an embargo on magazines running their reviews before a certain date. And so it was yesterday with the i8 Roaster. So let’s take a look my three favourite reviews I’ve read, and picked out the highlights for you: BMW BLOG: “The three-cylinder, 1.5-liter turbocharged petrol engine is untouched, mated to an electric motor and six-speed automatic gearbox, powering the rear wheels. While an electric motor powers the front wheels, thus giving it real-time torque-vectoring all-wheel drive. The capacity of the lithium-ion battery has been increased, now at 34 ampere-hours instead of 20, and gross energy capacity now 11.6 kWh, up from 7.1. This permits an increased electric-only driving range up from 20 to 33 miles.” AutoExpress: “In the four years since BMW launched its i8 Coupe, the company has sold 13,000 examples of the carbon-tub, petrol-electric hybrid. That improved battery range is instantly noticeable, too. Whereas in the original Coupe the electric motor could be easily side-lined by the turbocharged petrol engine, now the electrified elements of the powertrain are far more willing and able to take on longer and quicker driving duties” EVO: “Away from the battery cell improvements, the big technological change to the i8 Roadster is the one made to the car’s structure in turning it from a coupe to a convertible. With the roof down the electric motors that is all but mute in the coupe gains a voice – admittedly a bit of a whiny voice, but if you’re a sci-fi fan you’ll probably think you’re an extra in Tron as the sound intensifies as speeds increase. If you’ve ever been to a Formula E race (honestly, give one a go) it’s not far off the noise the single-seaters make when accelerating out of slower corners. Talking of which, another benefit of the larger-capacity battery cells is that the i8 Roadster will now happily drive along under electric power alone at speeds up to 75mph.” So there you have it. Want one? That will be £125,000 please. I won’t do the conversion to US$ because I always mess up the taxes and VAT. But you get the idea, you need to be making bank to pop down BMW and buy one. You could have a Jag F-Type for seven grand less, or a Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster for a mere £111,000, but why be cheap. Go big and get a proper fast EV hybrid.   http://www.bmwblog.com/2018/04/29/first-drive-bmw-i8-roadster-its-all-about-the-journey/   http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/bmw/i8/103352/new-2018-bmw-i8-roadster-review   http://www.evo.co.uk/bmw/bmw-i8-roadster/21184/bmw-i8-roadster-review-new-open-top-hybrid-sports-car   TESLA MODEL 3 ACCELERATION SHOWCASED IN HIGH-SPEED AUTOBAHN SPRINT   “A Tesla enthusiast from Germany has taken the Model 3 to the Autobahn to observe the acceleration and high-speed performance of the compact electric car" report Teslarati. The top speed reached was 130mph and of course done legally as you can on certain stretches of the German roads. It was Tesla Marcus who live streamed it over the weekend. He observed the acceleration was not quite on par with Model S. But hey, neither is the price! I'll put a link to the Teslarati article in the show notes as it's only fair to send traffic to them but they link through to the video. https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-acceleration-high-speed-autobahn/   SF MOTORS BRINGING NEW ELECTRIC VEHICLE R&D FACILITY TO SILICON VALLEY There’s nothing better than seeing announcements turn into reality, and new companies making a go of the thing Elon says nobody should ever try – launch a new automotive company. One of those is SF Motors and today they announced the opening of a new R&D facility in McCarthy Creekside, California. Do any of our California listeners know it? The company currently has R&D facilities in Santa Clara, Calif.; Ann Arbor, Mich.; and Stuttgart, Germany. The company CTO, Yifan Tang, will oversee R&D and low volume manufacturing at the 130,000 sq/ft facility. “Adding to our existing R&D labs, this new facility will conduct extensive design validation testing and low-volume manufacturing necessary to ensure smooth transition to mass production of our batteries and electric powertrains, which are key components of our vehicles,” says Tang. “Drawing on our global business model and decades of manufacturing experience, locating this facility near our Silicon Valley headquarters will strategically ensure quality and efficiency as we prepare to bring our intelligent EVs to market.” A reminder they’re targeting 200,000 units per year but I don’t know when, in context, the established Model S and Model X lines will do around 60,000 units each per year, and obviously dwarfed by Model 3. https://ngtnews.com/sf-motors-bringing-new-electric-vehicle-rd-facility-to-silicon-valley   UK INSTAVOLT CHARGING NETWORK FREE IN MAY In the UK electric vehicle (EV) charging company InstaVolt is making its rapid charging stations completely free to use for the entire month of May as a celebration of the company’s 100th charger going live. InstaVolt’s charging stations are available to use on a pay-as-you-go basis, with no subscription or membership required.  Drivers simply tap their contactless credit or debit card, charge up and go. There’s no minimum spend and no connection fee.  This month, start your charge as normal by tapping a card, but you won’t be billed. And it’s unlimited. “The UK needs a solid public charging infrastructure and we’re working at a rate of knots to make that a reality” said InstaVolt CEO Tim Payne. “We’re switching on new rapid charging stations every week and we’re thrilled to have hit this important milestone of 100. It’s our pleasure to share that celebration with EV drivers across the UK and offer them free charging throughout the month of May.”   PSA'S DS BRAND WILL ELECTRIFY THE PREMIUM SECTOR PSA Group's premium DS brand said that all its new models from 2025 will have only full-electric or hybrid drivetrains, and that it will present its first battery electric vehicle at the Paris auto show in October. “Our ambition is very clear: For DS to be among the global leaders in electrified cars in its market," DS CEO Yves Bonnefont said in a press release yesterday. " PSA will offer 40 electrified models across its five brands -- Peugeot, Citroen, Opel, Vauxhall and DS -- worldwide by 2025, CEO Carlos Tavares told the Automotive News World Congressat the start of this year. I’ve added a link to that press release on the show notes. Another big announcement, and time for another reality check, 7 years is a lifetime away. 7 years ago the world was totally different, and 7 years before than in 2004, there was no such thing as YouTube or Twitter, and Mark Zuckerberg was in his dorm room at Harvard writing code for The FaceMash, the website that as a precursor to TheFacebook. So yes, 2025 is a long way off. http://int-media.dsautomobiles.com/en/all-future-ds-models-will-be-exclusively-electrified-versions   U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY ANNOUNCES $19 MILLION FOR ADVANCED BATTERY AND ELECTRIFICATION RESEARCH Today, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $19 million to support twelve new cost-shared research projects focused on batteries and vehicle electrification technologies to enable extreme fast charging. The projects announced today will help advance DOE’s research on batteries and electrification aimed at reducing battery pack cost to under $100 per kilowatt-hour, increasing range to over 300 miles, and charging in under 15 minutes or less by 2028. All investment is welcome, who wouldn’t love $19m, but split between 12 projects? We'll hear tomorrow how much Tesla lost in Q1, if it's in the ball park of USD$700m it would seem OK, so if you want to see what's really at the sharp end of battery R&D, you might need to spend a bit more. https://www.energy.gov/articles/department-energy-announces-19-million-advanced-battery-and-electrification-research-enable   MERCEDES-BENZ KILLS ITS ‘TESLA POWERWALL KILLER’ That's a great headline from Electrek. And it's sadly true, whenever anyone launches a product up against Tesla, whether it's in the car or energy space, the headline writers will call it a Tesla killer. I did it without realising a couple of months back talking about the Mercedes S-Class electric equivalent, the EQS. And so often other companies look at Tesla, and say anything you can do, we can do better. Except, they can’t. Mercedes Benz had their own version of the Tesla Powerwall, selling solar and battery packages alongside Vivent. But GreenTechMedia got a statement saying: "It’s not necessary to have a car battery at home: they don’t move, they don’t freeze. It’s overdesigned." Maybe that's true, but it was also woeful compared to the Powerwall. The Merc modular system was 2.5kWh at the smallest capacity, starting at $5,000. It was too much compared to the dollar cost per kWh of Tesla. https://electrek.co/2018/04/30/mercedes-benz-kills-tesla-powerwall-killer-energy-storage-device/   BLOCKCHAIN COULD REVOLUTIONISE EV CHARGING Question: do you understand Blockchain? Properly understand it? No me neither. "Using blockchain technology, peer-to-peer networks have established marketplaces to connect EV drivers so they can share charging stations with each other" says EnergyFuse: "Residential and commercial EV owners can make a profit by allowing others to access their chargers, and drivers have the flexibility to charge their vehicles at different locations. Companies in banking, finance, insurance, oil trading, and utilities have been moving to blockchains—decentralized distributed ledgers that record online transactions—to improve efficiencies" “It’s Airbnb for EV charging,” Preston Roper, COO of eMotorWerks, told The Fuse. eMotorWerks, a California-based firm that focuses on EV charging technologies, was the first company in the United States to establish a peer-to-peer network in its partnership with Share&Charge. I get how that works, but I still don't get how the blockchain makes this possible. Do I sounds like those people who first saw the internet in the 90s and said 'what IS it'?  http://energyfuse.org/blockchain-electric-vehicle-charging/   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. The Executive Vehicle and Secure Transportation Survey has been conducted every two years since 2013. Practitioners who participated in the survey represent the corporate (37% of participants), high net worth (21%), and private security community (23%). The participants had an average of approximately 15 years of experience. Keep in mind that the survey indicates vehicles that are most commonly used, not necessarily the best vehicles. The survey covers all aspects of secure transportation. The goal of the survey is to examine trends and collect data that will help develop a broader perspective of the secure transportation profession. A Summary of the 2017 Report This year's report consists of 36 pages of data with supplemental articles. The additional information is added to enhance and support the data. TYPES OF VEHICLES The sedan used most often for executive transportation is the Mercedes S-Class. This choice has not changed since 2013. SEDAN TYPE PERCENTAGE Mercedes S-Class 28.3% Audi A8 15.7% BW7 Series 12.6% Lexus LS460 10.2% Cadillac XTS 7.9% The most commonly used SUV is the Suburban. The Suburban has been at the top of the list of most used SUVs since 2013, but this year there was an almost 20% decrease in its use (from 51% to 33%). SUV TYPE PERCENTAGE Chevrolet Suburban 33.1% Cadillac Escalade 12.9% GMC Denali 12.9% GMC Yukon 6.7% Supplemental Information The use of armored vehicles has fluctuated, going from 15.5% in 2013 to 22.9% in 2015 and to 14.1% in 2017. The surveys indicate that the use of armored vehicles ebbs and flows from year to year, but every year a substantial number of participants are using armored vehicles. To supplement that survey data, we added the ISDA white paper “Best Practices for Purchasing Armored Vehicles.” The survey indicates that 62% of all participants use a rental vehicle, so we added Joe Autera's seminal article on renting vehicles, “Renting Vehicles and Secure Transportation; Best Practices for a Less-Than-Perfect Solution.” We found that 55% of the participants did not know about the IRS ruling on secure transportation. Support information includes articles concerning the IRS code governing secure transportation. The supplemental information is a small percentage of that which is available to ISDA members. ISDA and its member's curate information specifically designed to increase member knowledge and marketability. The majority of the information is password protected and available to ISDA members only. The information is disseminated via blog posts, free online learning, and white papers. The 36-page report is free to ISDA members and those who took part in the survey and requested the information. Friday 13th April 2018. MODEL 3 TIME SHIFT Steve Jobs was famously coined by Apple engineers in the early 80’s as having a reality distortion field. And now another genius has introduced us to another phrase, although this time himself. Welcome to Elon Musks time shift. Whatever you do, don’t call the Model 3 delay, a delay. It’s a time shift. “You’ll definitely get your car,” the chief executive officer told CBS in an interview aired Thursday. “It’s a six- to nine-month time shift. That’s literally it, and three of those months have already passed. “It’s mostly, like, people cancel because, you know, they just needed a car and we didn’t have a car for them. As long as you can see that you’re ascending levels of hell, that’s OK”   ELECTRIC MERCEDES S-CLASS TAKES ON TESLA MODEL S If you’ve checked out any previous podcasts we recently talked about the rumoured electric version of the Mercedes S Class, the EQS. Bloomberg say: “Mercedes-Benz is developing a battery-powered sedan about the size of its $90,000 flagship S-Class, challenging Tesla Inc.’s Model S for high-end electric-car buyers. The new full-size sedan, dubbed EQ S, will be part of the Daimler AG unit’s push to introduce 10 all-electric vehicles by 2022, Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said Wednesday during the presentation of the revamped Mercedes A-Class hatchback in Split, Croatia. The EQ line will be flanked by plug-in hybrid models offering a “totally different” battery range than today, while conventional vehicles will feature so-called mild hybrids with 48-volt technology in a shift away from pure combustion power. “All vehicles will be electrified,” Zetsche said.”   CHEVROLET BOLT OTA UPDATES Only 24 hour ago on the podcast I was saying about how all EVs should be updated over the air, because a trip to the dealer to install updates is mad. It followed the story of Chevrolet asking Bolt owners to go back for a software update. I then stumbled on InsdieEV’s putting who got to the bottom of things they say : “as far as we could tell, even if the remote updates were initiated, this problem would still require a visit to your local dealership. It seems that almost overnight, the story may have changed. Perhaps not having to issue a recall and deal with a wider amount of negative press, GM got its act in gear to quickly move forward with the new technology? Not only do we have the automaker’s official letter, but also the following video explaining the OTA process and how it works.” Check out InsideEVs for that letter.   VOLKSWAGEN ANNOUNCE ON BATTERY PLANT VW make a LOT of cars, so when they go all in on electric cars, they need a lot of batteries. They won’t be making the cells but they’re making the packs, and they’ll be making up to 500,000 of those a year at their oldest factory, first opened in 1938, their Braunschweig plant. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand, made the announcement yesterday: “The Volkswagen brand is doing its utmost to develop and produce the electric cars of the future in Germany. The battery system is an elementary part of the value chain – and we bundle the expertise for this important technology for the whole of Europe in Braunschweig.” And if you wondered why I said Diess, not CEO Muller, it’s because “Volkswagen is seeking to replace Matthias Mueller with the head of its core brand, Herbert Diess, as part of a broader overhaul of its management structure to boost efficiency, two people familiar with the matter said. Newslook” USA Today reports: ” In addition to his job as CEO, Diess will directly oversee vehicle information technology as well as group development and research. He is expected to closely shape VW's strategy on self-driving cars and electric vehicles.”   SWEDEN’S ELECTRIC ROAD According to the Guardian newspaper today: The world’s first electrified road that recharges the batteries of cars and trucks driving on it has been opened in Sweden.” Maybe they’ve been looking at their neighbours in Norway getting all the EV attention! The technology uses an electric rail embedded in a public road, and it links Stockholm Arlanda airport to a site 2km away. The electricity moves from two tracks of rail in the road via a movable arm attached to the bottom of a vehicle, a bit like the inverse of a tram, or the new electric buses you see with the conductors above them. However this technology doesn’t stop you changing lanes or overtaking. The electrified road is split into sections of 50m with each ones being powered, and activated by cars on it. The Guardian continue “When a vehicle stops, the current is disconnected. The system is able to calculate the vehicle’s energy consumption, which enables electricity costs to be debited per vehicle and user.”   FIRST VOLVO ELECTRIC TRUCK ANNOUNCED Volvo Trucks now introduces its first all-electric truck for commercial use – the Volvo FL Electric for urban distribution and refuse operations 185 kW electric motor, max power/130 kW continuous output, two speed transmission 2-6 lithium-ion batteries, totalling 100-300 kWh. Range: Up to 300 km. Charging: AC charging via the mains grid (22 kW) or DC fast charge via CCS/Combo2 for up to 150 kW. Recharging time: From empty to fully charged batteries: fast charge 1-2 hours (DC charging), night charge up to 10 hours (AC charging) with maximum battery capacity of 300 kWh. The first two Volvo FL Electric trucks will be operated by refuse collection and recycling company Renova and haulage firm TGM. The Off Peak City Distribution project studied the effects of goods transport at night in central Stockholm. By avoiding peak hour traffic the trucks were able to do their jobs in one-third of the time compared to daytime operation.   I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested.
