Born To Watch - A Movie Podcast

Grab your whip and avoid the monkey brains—this week on Born to Watch, the crew takes on the franchise's wildest, weirdest, and arguably most chaotic chapter, with their Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom Review. Whitey, G-Man, and Damo dust off their fedoras and dive deep into the darker, more divisive entry in the iconic adventure trilogy.Released in 1984 as a prequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom was Spielberg and Lucas swinging for something different. What we got was a rollercoaster of tonal shifts, gruesome rituals, screeching sidekicks, and a whole lot of “did that really just happen?” moments. And the Born to Watch crew has a lot to say about it.Whitey opens the show by calling it what it is: a movie that's revered by many, but doesn't quite measure up to the gold standard set by Raiders. For kids of the '80s, it was a VHS staple. But for grown-up podcasters with opinions, it's a tale of two movies—one part rollercoaster fun, one part tonal mess. From the moment Harrison Ford steps off a plane in Shanghai to the heart-ripping Thuggie cult shenanigans in India, the guys unpack every whip crack, every scream, and every questionable creative choice.G-Man shares fond memories of collecting Indiana Jones memorabilia, like those glossy movie programs you'd snag at the cinema. But the nostalgia doesn't blind him—he's quick to call out the film's many plot holes, caricature characters, and some of the worst romantic chemistry in cinematic history. Damo agrees, rating the film a humble “three rewatches” compared to the endless love he has for Raiders. Ouch. And then there's Willie Scott, the club singer-turned-sidekick played by Kate Capshaw (and Spielberg's future wife). The team doesn't hold back on their verdict: screechy, underwritten, and possibly cinema's most annoying scream queen. Compared to Raiders' Marion Ravenwood, she's less “badass adventurer” and more “horny showgirl with a death wish.”But not everything is doom and gloom in Temple of Doom. The pod shines a spotlight on Short Round (Ke Huy Quan), the pint-sized sidekick who stole hearts, especially among the younger viewers. Isabelle, Whitey's daughter, gives him two thumbs up. G-Man draws comparisons to The Goonies and even Star Wars, noting that Lucas may have repurposed some beats from Empire and Return of the Jedi. The mine cart chase? Pure Endor energy. Harrison Ford's smug bedroom banter? Total Han Solo.In classic Born to Watch fashion, the boys rip into the absurdities: Why does Indy carry a full suit in his rucksack? Is a flaming skewer to the gut a valid weapon choice? And what kind of club plays “Anything Goes” on repeat, in both English and Mandarin? These are the real questions. The episode also digs into the bizarre dinner scene at Pankot Palace (chilled monkey brains, anyone?), the film's unexpected legacy in helping create the PG-13 rating, and whether George Lucas' fingerprints are a little too all over this one.And of course, they wrap up with The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, featuring killer one-liners, Harrison Ford's bad punches, and enough sound effects to make you think you're in a Looney Tunes war zone. There's even a surprise cameo by Dan Aykroyd (yep, that actually happened) and a nostalgic tribute to Val Kilmer and Top Secret.By the end, one thing is clear: Temple of Doom is the middle child of the original Indiana Jones trilogy. Darker than Raiders, sillier than Last Crusade, and a cult classic in its own right. Whether it's a hit, a dud, or a chaotic blend of both, this episode is a wild ride from start to finish.

We're back in the saddle again! Galloping along with our archeologist friend Dr. Indiana Jones played by Harrison Ford, who just turned 81 years old! We prepared for this adventure by recently rewatching the first four Indiana Jones movies in one day. The first three Jones movies from the 1980s were wonderful. But needless to say, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) did not hold up, and our expectations for this fifth installment of the Dr. Jones saga were low. Director James Mangold takes the reigns from Spielberg this time, along with many credited screenwriters. This time it's 1969, and we're searching around the globe for Archimedes' Dial of Destiny. Harrison Ford leads the cast, which includes Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen. Returning characters include John Rhys-Davies as Sallah and Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood. Composer John Williams does some heavy lifting, scoring the heck out of this one at the age of 91! We'll let you know all the highs and lows of our final adventure with Dr. Indiana Jones!

The film stars Harrison Ford, John Rhys-Davies, and Karen Allen reprising their roles as Indiana Jones, Sallah, and Marion Ravenwood, respectively, from earlier films. New cast members include Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Antonio Banderas, Toby Jones, Boyd Holbrook, Ethann Isidore, and Mads Mikkelsen. Set in 1969, the film follows Indiana Jones and his estranged goddaughter Helena Shaw trying to locate a device that could change the course of history before Jürgen Voller, a Nazi-turned-NASA scientist, can take it for himself and change the outcome of World War II. Dial of Destiny is the only film in the series that is neither directed by Steven Spielberg nor conceived by George Lucas, with both serving as executive producers instead. It is also the only film in the series not distributed by Paramount Pictures following Walt Disney Studios' acquisition of Lucasfilm and a deal between studios that transferred film rights for future sequels. Paramount retains the distribution rights to the first four films and a residual associate credit. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny debuted out of competition at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on May 18, 2023, and was released in the United States on June 30, by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film received lukewarm reviews from critics and has grossed $130 million worldwide. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/popcorn-junkies/message

Is there a more iconic Harrison Ford role than Indiana Jones, the bullwhip-snapping, fedora-clad, globe-trotting archeologist who fights Nazis and pillages artifacts from their cultures of origin, which was the style at the time? It can be difficult to step back from this movie's cultural primacy and just watch it as a movie. When you do, it's an adventuresome thrill ride, impeccably made, as Indy and his pal's zip from one precarious encounter to another. Part of the charm is Harrison Ford's portrayal of Indiana Jones, toeing the line between heroic and roguish, and - unlike modern action stars - often surprised by the peril in which he finds himself and occasionally in danger of getting badly injured or even dead. But is Indiana Jones, as a character, the hero we are led to believe? Or is he, as Hemal maintains, "like every bad boyfriend you've ever had"? In this episode, Hemal and Brian also interrogate the ideological valence of the film, from the troubling way in which Marion Ravenwood, the movie's sole woman character (played with delightful grit and humor by the underrated Karen Allen) is portrayed and treated, to the questionable choice of having the film's Egyptian and Nepali characters played by white guys - including John Rhys-Davies, noted Welshman, as Indy's loyal and resourceful sidekick Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir. Though it must be admitted, we also thoroughly enjoyed Rhys-Davies in the role. Do we contradict ourselves? Very well then, we contradict ourselves. We are large, we contain multitudes.

Moreover, Harry uses a shaft of light in the tomb as does Indiana in the Map Room at the Nazi dig site.Nicole Maurey as Elena Antonescu and Thomas Mitchell as Ed Morgan add to the action in Peru. Cue the John Williams music, because this month we are finally tapping into one of the most beloved 80s adventure franchises!  No, not THAT one...the OTHER George Lucas franchise: INDIANA JONES!   Now, as the internet informs us, the original title for this movie was just Raiders of the Lost Ark, but after the success of the franchise, when it was re-released it was then dubbed Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Either way, it's still the story of a supposedly mild-mannered archaeologist who steals artifacts for the museum in his downtime.  Bonafide hunk, Harrison Ford, stars as the titular scientist.  In the first iteration of his adventures, he races against Nazis to obtain the Lost Ark, the ancient vessel that holds the Ten Commandments (yes, THOSE Ten Commandments)!  Along the way, he reunites with old flame, Marion Ravenwood (the always luminous Karen Allen), and pal Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) to prevent the Nazis from getting their hands on one of the most powerful artifacts of all time!   Now, both Dan AND Chrysten remember nothing about this movie, but know they definitely watched it as kids so...this oughta be interesting!  Will this Steven Spielberg adventure live or die?  Join us and find out!  And don't forget to RATE, REVIEW & SUBSCRIBE!

In this third episode of “Now What?” you’ll hear from the actress who played Marion Ravenwood in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and got to tell off Harrison Ford. “Indiana Jones. I always knew some day you’d come walking back through my door.”   We got to walk through Karen Allen’s door at her charming house in the Berkshires where we spent the afternoon chatting about re-invention, karma, the downside of facelifts and why Karen Allen wants acting and directing to be at the center of her life again at the age of 64. “Now What?” was produced with help from Dan Brown, Nick Ciavatta, Allison Bernstein, Steve Zimmer and Gabe Zimmer.

Today's Guest: Tamara Lush, AP reporter based in St. Petersburg, Florida, whose first novel is Hot Shade.   Watch this exclusive Mr. Media interview with Tamara Lush by clicking on the video player above!  Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience full of sex-starved, consenting young adults who are getting crazy from the heat… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! To paraphrase the 39th President of the United States, I have lust in my heart… for Tamara Lush. We’ve never met in person, never even laid eyes on each other before this video interview commenced, but having read her searingly inflamed first attempt at romance fiction, I can’t help but want to get to know her better. TAMARA LUSH podcast excerpt: "While it is about sex, writing romance and reading romance is a really feminist act. It's about women taking control of their own lives and their own pleasure." You can LISTEN to this interview with AP reporter and novelist TAMARA LUSH, author of HOT SHADE, by clicking the audio player above! Fortunately, she’s in a soundproof booth and can’t hear me right now. I think. Uh, Tamara, can you hear me? Oh, sh!t. Look, what can I say? Hot Shade is a passionate, erotic story about Skylar, a young female reporter in a small Florida beach town who meets a mysterious Italian tourist in the course of doing her job. He soon turns her on in ways she never knew existed. It’s an excellent first effort and I know I want to read more from the ironically named Lush. TAMARA LUSH podcast excerpt: "When I was in second grade, I was heavily influenced by the movie 'Raiders of the Lost Ark. And in the early 1980s, I wrote 'Raiders fanfic. It always had to do with vaguely handsome foreign men doing swashbuckling things around the globe. There was heroine who need to be rescued. I was heavily influenced by Marion Ravenwood (played by actress Karen Allen). She was awesome!" Tamara Lush is currently an AP reporter based in St. Petersburg, Florida. Before that, she spent many years writing for the Tampa Bay Times. And she’s damn good at that, too. I’ve spent my entire career around female journalists and if they all have imaginations as vivid as Tamara’s, I envy the loves of their lives. Key interview moments: • 2:10 Karen Allen's portrayal of the love interest in the first 'Indiana Jones' film commits Tamara Lush to the writing life -- in second grade; • 14:40 Romance writing is, according to Lush, all about women taking control of their own lives and pleasure; • 23:00 As a reporter, Lush broke the story of South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford's infidelities with his Argentinian mistress, making international headlines. Raiders of the Lost Ark. As George Lucas vacationed in Hawaii after finishing the original Star Wars, he is joined by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg mentioned that he wants to direct a Bond movie and George tells him he has something better; Indiana Smith. Steven would go on to direct and fortuitously convince George to change the name to Indiana Jones. The rest, as they say, is cinema history. In this episode of The 602 Club host Matthew Rushing is joined by John Champion and Norman Lao to talk about the original Indy adventure Raiders of the Lost Ark. We discuss if Indy had been played by Tom Selleck, our memories associated with seeing the film for the first time and what kept us coming back for more, the basis for the series, what we love and what still bugs us about the film, the soundtrack, Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, plus the question, "Does it hold up for today's audience?".    Host Matthew Rushing   Guests John Champion  Norman Lao   Editor and Producer Matthew Rushing Richard Marquez   Associate Producers Norman C.
