In episode #293, we welcome good friend of The Coaches Site, Dave Smith. Two days before we were scheduled to record this podcast he notified us that he had been relieved of his duties as the Head Coach of RPI. Despite that, he agreed to join the pod with his only request being that we focus on the future and the positive experiences he enjoyed during his eight season's leading the RPI program. Previous to his time with RPI Smith spent 12 seasons as Head Coach at Canisius College. Prior to that, he was an Assistant Coach for seven seasons split between Miami University (Ohio), Bowling Green, and Mercyhurst. He is now going to start a new chapter in his coaching journey and will again relish in the opportunity to build and lead a team. We hope that this conversation will give other coaches hope and help them navigate the curveballs that the game throws at them. Listen as he shares the message he left his players with after being let go, why the royal road has changed offensive hockey, and why it all starts with following you passion.
Your Creative Mind Table Read: What if Odysseus had to answer for his choices? A playwright dares to ask. What if the women of The Odyssey had the final say? Maria (Walker) Bennett has been the President and CEO of SPR Therapeutics since she founded the company in 2010. Using her years of experience in the medtech industry, Maria identified an unmet market need for a non-opioid, non-surgical pain treatment to improve the lives of millions of pain sufferers. The idea for this new treatment originated during her biomedical engineering graduate studies at Case Western Reserve University, where she developed a peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) system to treat pain and also led R&D at an early stage neurostim company. During this experience, Maria discovered her passion for working with patients and physicians and witnessing life-changing results. She also learned the challenges of growing and sustaining an entrepreneurial company. From there, Maria was recruited to lead a team at Boston Scientific to conduct a large clinical trial, which demonstrated the safety and efficacy of an innovative angioplasty balloon and achieved FDA approval. While it was a great experience to work for a large medtech company, when a former colleague presented the opportunity to join a new start-up company, she couldn't resist and returned to Cleveland to serve as VP of Clinical at NDI Medical. At NDI, she played a vital role in the development of a neurostim system addressing urinary incontinence, which was acquired by Medtronic in 2008. After the sale of NDI, Maria revisited her idea of a novel pain relief therapy, validated there was an unmet market need, and founded SPR to commercialize its SPRINT® PNS System. She is the inventor of SPRINT, having multiple patents issued. Maria earned her BS degree in engineering management from Miami University (Ohio) and earned her MS degree in biomedical engineering from Case. She was awarded the East Central Region Entrepreneur of the Year from Ernst & Young in 2021.To learn more about the SPRINT PNS System , visit SprintPNS.com and to view important safety information, visit https://www.sprtherapeutics.com/physicians/important-safety-information/ as results may vary.

When The University of Cincinnati Bearcats' Director of Football Sports Performance, Niko Palazeti, took on his new role in January 2023, he recognized an immediate need for his program and the Bearcats football squad: he needed a strength and conditioning performance staff. Palazeti had been a member of Coach Mickey Marotti's sports performance staff at Ohio State Football. Yet now, he found himself having to formulate a complete staff to complement new Head Football Coach Scott Satterfield's vision and mission. Coach Palazeti moved quickly, as time was ticking away and the Bearcats would soon be returning from the holiday break. The returning squad had not quite really met him yet and he needed a staff that could hit the ground running to prepare the team for the rapidly approaching spring football practices. Nobody occupied the small and cramped assistant strength & conditioning office. Palazeti made his first call to Columbus, Ohio. His fellow strength and conditioning partner, Coach Chris Friend, had been a strength intern at OSU Football and was later promoted as a full-time strength coach under the olympic sports strength training umbrella. Coach Friend was ALL-IN for Cincy and made the 90 minute trip with his sleeves rolled up and ready to go. Next came Coach Brandon Garcia, who decided to depart Las Vegas, Nevada and UNLV to take on a fresh challenge of Big 12 Conference Football in Cincinnati. Garcia, a former football player at West Virginia State University, also had coaching stints at WVSU and Maryland Terrapins as well as some experience as a personal trainer down in Knoxville, Tennessee. Next on board was Scottie Etherington who had gained some early coaching experience at Marshall University with some intern experience at Ohio State Football and also Maryland Football. Finally, Robert "Robo" Williams was brought back into the fold. Robo had gained football playing experience at Miami University (Ohio) and also played a fifth year at Ohio Dominican where he completed his Masters Degree in Exercise Science, did an internship at Robert Morris University as well one back in his hometown at Cincinnati. He was an assistant at Toledo Rockets, Duke Blue Devils and at Army Football. This is an energetic, meticulous and hard working strength staff with some very good early on coaching experience that is sure to provide solid strength and conditioning knowledge and motivation for a very good and surging college football team. So, here's the ASAP~Athletic Strength And Power Podcast with all four members of Niko Palazeti's strength staff.
In 2020, I referred to Samuel H. Johnson as a Renaissance Person. By that, I mean a person with wide-ranging interests/knowledge who draws on both attributes to create new and valuable things for public consumption. That description fits Sam to a "T." He has been a radio host, award-winning public TV producer, Hollywood actor, activist, trailblazing Federal staff writer, and (in retirement) a novelist and author of children's books. His ability to pivot from one endeavor to another--and do each well--is one reason (among many) why I hold Sam in high regard. Today, Sam discusses his personal background, including the impact of his collegiate years at Miami University (Ohio). He then talks about his book writing projects (two in particular), The Cherokee and the Slave (2013) and Gabriel's Favorite Angel (2018), before focusing on the centerpiece of today's program, HBCUs The Living Legacies, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (2022). (All three books are available on Amazon.com.) I know you will enjoy getting to know Samuel H. Johnson. (You can read my review of his HBCU book here.)

My guest today is Valerie Brown. VALERIE BROWN is a Buddhist-Quaker Dharma teacher, facilitator, and executive coach. A former lawyer and lobbyist, she is a co-director of Georgetown's Institute for Transformational Leadership as well as founder and chief mindfulness officer of Lead Smart Coaching. She is an ordained Buddhist Dharma teacher in the Plum Village tradition, founded by Thich Nhat Hanh, and is a certified Kundalini yoga teacher. In her leadership development and mindfulness practice, she focuses on diversity, social equity, and inclusion. Valerie is an award-winning author whose books include The Road That Teaches and The Mindful School Leader with Kirsten Olson. She holds a juris doctor from Howard University School of Law, a Master of Arts from Miami University (Ohio), and a bachelor of arts from City University of New York. Valerie tends a lively perennial home garden in New Hope, Pennsylvania. Valerie's most recent book is Hope Leans Forward, Braving your way toward simplicity, awakening, and peace. In this book, Valerie beautifully blends pieces of her own journey, including many aches, pains, losses, and challenges with stories from other inspiring people, including Susan Cross, George Lakey, LoAn Nguygen, Fanny Brewster, and more. The thread: Hope, courage, and fear. Now, that's my summary of the thread that runs through this book, so you'll have to read it and see what threads appear for you, as there are many. For me, something that stood out is the fact that just about every story wove together hope, courage, bravery, and fear. Sometimes we look at other people and see them doing things that amaze us and we think, “I could never do that. I'd be too afraid.” And here's the thing, courageous and brave people also have fear. And they go forward anyway. In the book, Valerie quotes Margaret Wheatley, from her essay, “The Place beyond Fee and Hope,” where she says, “Hope never enters the room without fear at its side.” This conversation with Valerie is a bit briefer than other conversations on Make Life Less Difficult, due to some uncontrollable circumstances, but it's nonetheless real, impactful, and inspiring. Valerie, thank you for the work you do in the world, the light you share, the inspiration you live. We don't think of Canada as a republic. Even in its modern and vibrantly multi-cultural form, there is something monarchical about the place. The Queen appears on every coin, on the $20 bill, and pretty often in portrait form, placed over the home team's net in hockey rinks from coast to coast. Politically, Canada's status as a constitutional monarchy shapes a collective identity that prizes political moderation, consensus, and that strives for egalitarian values. But there was a time when Canada might have taken a republican turn. Between 1837 and 1867 – a period bracketed by rebellion and Confederation – a group of writers debated the virtues of American-style republican government versus British constitutional monarchy. In these discussions, American culture and political institutions were a dominant frame of reference. In Between Empire and Republic: America in the Colonial Canadian Imagination (Lexington, 2022), Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy employs three Anglophone authors – John Richardson, Susanna Moodie and Thomas Chandler Haliburton - as a lens that helps us to understand a period of possible political futures as states formed in the wake of revolution, and Canada defined itself in contrast to its southern neighbor. About the author: Oana Godeanu-Kenworthy is Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Global & Intercultural Studies at Miami University (Ohio). Is Putin being led by a pull toward narrative? What does that even mean? Putin is a student of history--specifically, he loves to talk about the exploits of various Russian figures in history: Catherine, the Great being a prime example. Does Putin see himself as the next "great"? Is this one of the main reasons why he is doing this? I've discussed on this podcast that one of the defining traits of our Neomodern culture is the urge to create stable narratives, to define one's self and make sense of one's place in history. Although the history and circumstances surrounding the invasion of Ukraine is complex, I do believe that part of the story is Putin's yearning to create narrative. Leaders have been doing this for thousands of years, and they will continue to do it. Why? Is it power? Sometimes. However, I think it often has more to do with the classical understanding of glory. For the Greeks, glory was not riches and lands; glory was a sustainable story of one's deeds that would transcend the life of the individual. Is Putin seeking glory? That might be a part of it. It is for this reason that I have invited Dr. Stephen Norris on the show, the Walter E. Havighurst Professor of Russian history at Miami University-Ohio. In this episode, we talk about narratives, history, NATO, and the people in both Russia and Ukraine who are fighting to end this war. With a Democratic president and Democratic control of the House of Representatives and Senate, the Democratic Party currently holds a rare government trifecta. Yet less than a year since grabbing power, President Biden is staring down the prospect of Democrats legislators derailing their president's legislative agenda. What happened the last time Democrats controlled Congress and the White House under President Obama? How are the successes and failures from that period shaping the Biden administration's legislative ambitions? What is President Biden's pathway forward for legislative success? The United States Studies Centre (USSC) hosted a discussion featuring USSC Non-Resident Senior Fellow Bruce Wolpe and Chair of the Department of Political Science at Miami University (Ohio), Professor Bryan Marshall, who recently published the second edition of The Committee, an authoritative study of Congress during the Obama administration. In their latest edition, Wolpe and Marshall update their first-hand account of Congress' work on President Obama's legislative initiatives and provide further analysis of the larger historic political factors at play for a unique expert insight to an understanding of how Congress worked under President Obama and now under President Biden. Together with Sarah Storey, most recently the Minister Counsellor (Congressional) at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC, where she managed the Embassy's strategic engagement with Congress, Wolpe and Marshall discussed Biden's legislative agenda as it moves to climactic votes that will define his legacy.
Ahmad Ibn Tulun: Governor of Abbasid Egypt, 868-884 (Oneworld Academic, 2021), by Matthew S. Gordon (Miami University (Ohio)) is an innovative look at the Abbasid governor of Egypt from 868-884, and the short-lived dynasty that succeeded him for just two decades. Ibn Tulun is perhaps best known for the mosque that still bears his name in Cairo--arguably the city's oldest Islamic monument that survives in its original form--which was the centerpiece of the capital city that he built. While ibn Tulun is often depicted in Egyptian historiography as an autonomous leader, aspiring toward independence away from the greater Abbasid state, Gordon makes a convincing argument that ibn Tulun--the son of a Turkic slave-soldier gifted to the Abbasid caliph--was instead a product of the political turmoil in Iraq, but that he was very much an Abbasid in spirit and politics. This intriguing and convincing reframing of ibn Tulun's life and career offers a new interpretation of this understudied period in Egyptian history, as well as a glimpse into Abbasid-era household politics. Christopher S Rose is a social historian of medicine focusing on Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean in the 19th and 20th century. Cade York is the field goal kicker for Louisiana State University (LSU), and Will Reichard is the kicker for the University of Alabama. Both represent the finest kicking talent in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and are considered two of the best kickers in college football. In 2020 the SEC was stacked with talented kickers. York was named 1st Team All-SEC and Anders Carlson (Auburn University) was named 2nd Team All-SEC, and Harrison Mevis (Mizzou) was named 1st Team Freshman All-SEC. Reichard was left out, but so was Evan McPherson (University of Florida) and Jack Podlesny (University of Georgia.) Both York and Reichard were named semi-finalists for the 2020 Lou Groza Award which is an annual award given to college football’s top kicker. Reichard was named one of three Lou Groza Finalists with Jake Oldroyd (Brigham Young University) and the 2020 Lou Groza Award winner, Jose Borregales (University of Miami.) How does the Simple Kicking Index rank Cade and Will? Let’s start with the Reichard, who was the kicker for the 2021 CFP National Champions. Reichard had a breakout season in 2020 after an injury-plagued 2019 . He made 14/14 Field Goals with a Long of 52, and 84/84 PATs. A 100% season on field goals and extra points. Based on the distances of his kicks, the Simple Kicking Index determined that Reichard performed 12.65 points above expected which ranks 3rd overall. York, who was the kicker for the 2020 CFP National Champions ranked #2 overall. He made 18/21 field goals, including 6/7 from 50+. The Simple Kicking Index determined that York performed 13.86 points above expected. The Simple Kicking Kicker of the year was Jose Borregales who kicked 14.76 points better than expected. How does this compare to the previous 4 seasons? Both were in the top 20. Cade ranks #10, and Will ranks #17. Other kickers who are on the list are: Riley Patterson, University of Memphis, NFL Free Agent Matt Gay, University of Utah, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams (he made the list twice!) Cole Tracy, LSU, NFL Free Agent Sam Sloman, Miami University (Ohio), Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee Titans Andre Szmyt, Syracuse University Jose Borregales, University of Miami, Florida International University Tyler Bass, Georgia Southern, Buffalo Bills Keith Duncan, University of Iowa, NFL Free Agent Nick Sciba, Wake Forest University Gabe Brkic, University of Oklahoma Rodrigo Blankenship, University of Georgia, Indianapolis Colts Jonathan Song, TCU, NFL Free Agent Dominik Eberle, Utah State, Las Vegas Raiders Cade York was a key asset to the LSU Tigers National Championship team led by Coach Ed Orgeron, and he improved in 2020. York was 7.63 points better than expected in 2019 making 21/26 field goals. He improved by 6.21 point year over year. This is like saying Michael Jordan averaged 30 points one season, and 35 points the next season. Both are really good, but he continues to improve. Reichard was hurt in 2019 and bounced back in 2020. But resilience is nothing new to Reichard. During his career at Hoover High School in Hoover, Alabama he suffered a torn ACL. He bounced back then earned a scholarship offer to the University of Alabama and started school shortly in January 2019. This episode covers what it is like to get recruited as a kicker. Reichard and York were both highly ranked in high school. In fact, York who graduated from Prosper High School in Prosper, TX, kicked a 59 yard field goal in the Under Armour All-America Game. Also, we cover how Coach Nick Saban and Coach Jeff Banks recruited Reichard out of Hoover. They explain how they got their college scholarships, what it is like winning a national championship, and how they feel playing in a game like LSU vs. Alabama every year. York recalls his 57 yard game winner against the University of Florida at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in the fog.

So, I really like to find big problems that really help people live better lives. A very idealistic way to look at it is technology that enables the human spirit. The problem we solve is that targeting, in other words, how to pick your next target for your marketing or your sales is actually very broken. The symptom of that is that sales, people usually hate the leads that are given to them by marketing.I know personally how incredibly difficult it is to find the right audience to market to. And then how do we engage that audience on the path for them to become a customer. So that’s the problem we’re solving. Our customers consider our technology to be their unfair advantage. Our revenues have grown 20% per month, for two and a half years. That’s an indication that technology works.’During this interview, you will learn three things:That by focusing your business on a valuable outcome will help to unlock markets you possibly didn’t even considerWhy focusing your efforts on business model innovation will give you the fastest route to defensible differentiation. How giving your customers something they can’t live without is your secret to unlock double digit monthly growth. A few years ago, I was preparing for a recruiting trip at my alma mater, Miami University (Ohio), and had the opportunity to connect with Dr. Megan Gerhardt, one of the leadership professors in the business school. After exchanging emails, we met in person and had the first of many conversations about leadership, navigating generational differences in the workforce, and why Millennials have gotten such a bad reputation. She has also provided leadership training to a number of my colleagues through her consultancy, The Gerhardt Group, and I always learn a lot when I talk to her. Today, we dive into a lot, including what it means to be “Gentelligent” - a movement that Megan started, how different generations view leadership, the positive side of Millennials, and what Generation Z has in store for us.
Ryan Soskin is a freight fanatic. An Economics/Finance major from Miami University (Ohio) and current Senior Manager of Shipper Solutions at Convoy, Soskin has spent the bulk of his career in the transportation industry. As a result, he’s all too familiar with fluctuations in the marketplace. After record expansion of truckload demand in 2017 and 2018, 2019 has seen the freight market slow significantly. Contributing to the softening, record new equipment purchases have inflated supply, further driving down rates, and as a result we’ve seen several medium and large trucking companies shut down or layoff drivers. Meanwhile, many shippers have opted to bypass their contracts for lower spot market rates. Tack on uncertainty around U.S.-China trade relations, flooding in the Midwest, and California weather softening the impact of produce season, and there are lots of questions around the state of freight halfway through 2019. Will a budding produce season see a turnaround in demand? Or will the freight blues continue through the summer? Tune into Episode 9 with hosts Jake and Michael as they discuss the current state of the freight market with industry guru Ryan Soskin.

Two Under-Served Areas of the Insurance Marketplace on Buckhead Business Show Buz McOmber McOmber Insurance My family began in the insurance business in 1893 with my grandfather, Fred T. McOmber. He and my father built one of the largest independent insurance agencies in Michigan through their focus on honesty, great customer service, community involvement and making policy holders the center of everything they did. That's the world I grew up in and those are the values I carry forward with me to this day. My business career in multiple industries over 45 years has as its foundation the desire to make my clients more effective, their businesses function more successfully and always doing the right thing on their behalf. I have a degree in investment finance from Miami University (Ohio) and spent my first five years out of college as a Naval Officer serving shipboard out of Norfolk, VA and as base Supply Officer & Comptroller at the ammunition depot on Guam. I spent 28 years in the technology industry, working in large systems for IBM, followed by a role as a leader in a desktop systems integration and leasing firm and then finally as a sales leader managing relationships with Gartner, Inc.'s largest clients including GM, Sara Lee, Ford, Chrysler and Coca Cola. I was driven to enter the “family business” by my desire to help those who struggle to find affordable health insurance as well as long term care insurance that makes financial sense. I take community involvement seriously having served on the inaugural Executive Board of the Brookhaven Chamber of Commerce, working on Habitat for Humanity home builds, and mission work in Tanzania. My wife Kimberly & I have been married for 46 year and are the parents of three wonderful children and now enjoy six grandchildren. Brief Description of Product or Service: Focused on two under-served areas of the insurance marketplace: 1) Health coverage for the small/medium sized business (5 & up) and also those larger business where they have individuals who can't afford the group plan offered by the employer. I also serve larger companies that are self-funded to help them manage there routine medical costs which fall straight to the bottom line. 2) The long term care market has been in disarray because of carriers leaving the market and large increases in premiums. I offer a hybrid life/long term care product from a large A+ rated company that provides 2x the face value of the underlying life policy for a price only slightly above what a life policy costs. It's also guaranteed issue for groups of 5 employees & up - up to $100K ($200K LTC). This provides smaller companies with the ability to offer a benefit that few others do and for the average person who thought they couldn't afford either life or long term care insurance to have both. Our insurance products are excellent fits for the markets I have identified because they all struggle with offering affordable, accessible and simple to use health coverage. The hybrid Life/Long Term Care product addresses the shrinking number of providers and the many broken promises of affordable premiums to help people in their later years. Topics to Discuss: State of both health ins mkt and Long Term Care mkt Who we serve, why & how we add value Why limited medical plans Why hybrid Life/LTC What sets us apart Web Site / Linkedin / Social Media Links: www.mcomberinsurance.com https://www.linkedin.com/in/buzmcomber The Buckhead Business Show Spotlights Industry Leaders in Buckhead and Atlanta!
