Inflation is putting pressure on a lot of people in Nova Scotia, especially the ones making minimum wage. And while the Provincial Government is working towards a 15-dollar per hour minimum, it won't reach that number until April of 2024. The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives in Nova Scotia recently released its annual report on living wages. It's titled "Working for a Living, Not Living to Work" and the author is Christine Saulnier. It says Nova Scotia's living wage rates for 2022 are: Annapolis Valley ($22.40), Cape Breton ($20.00), Halifax ($23.50), Northern ($20.40), and Southern ($22.55). The wages all increased from between 5% and 8% and cost increases are what's driving the calculations. Saulnier weighs in on the purpose of the report and what impact an increase in GST and other payments for low income Canadians will have on affordability and the ability to pay for the basics.
Episode 278 breaks down the topic of life. The sequence of physical and mental experiences that make up the existence of an individual. Spiritual existence transcending physical death. The period from birth to death. The average person does not genuinely understand life. The average person does not understand why they were born and why they are alive. Our idea of life has been constructed from an evil, tyrannical, vile, and wicked system of enslavement. A control system, hellbent on taking away all joys of life from humanity. Our birthrights to free land, clean air, water, food, and soil have been stolen from us. A life in which our very existence is being altered and manipulated. A life that was created for humanity to always look externally for direction, guidance, and leadership. A life in which the average person is okay with authority, control, dominion, governance, and rulership over themselves, and the rest of humanity. A life in which we are living to work and working to live, just to survive. How many people do you know that are truly living life to the fullest? How many people in our lives understand the true meaning of life, outside of the construct of this parasitical system? Not many. Life has been highjacked by these soulless entities that are hellbent on destroying our lives and we are witnessing this in countless ways. The cube of education, finance, healthcare, and religion are all constructs created in order to alter and destroy the lives of humanity. We are partaking in our own demise and destroying the quality of not only our lives but animals, habitats as well as our future generations. The Most High created us to enjoy every moment of life. We were created to use our unique gifts to manifest our desired reality and share these gifts with the entire world. We were created to be fruitful and to multiply. We were created to make lifelong memories through constant new and fulfilling experiences. We were created to live life and travel to all ends of the earth and meet as many walks of life as possible. Humanity was created in order to share with the animals, all of nature, and live amongst creation. We've traded in a life that is fulfilling to our mind, body, and soul for a life of anxiety, confusion, depression, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, vanity, worry, and death. We die for lack of knowledge. On this episode, Kris and I recap the strange incident of the "lost" episode. Last week, we had a real banger recorded...but something had other plans. We go on to discuss this essay by The Convivial Society, "We are Not Living in a Simulation, We are Living in the Past." Is it accurate to say that the transparent, false nature of the internet is a function of it being a large archive? Can you be in the present while constantly reinterpreting the past? What does that even look like? I am tasked with inventing a new holiday, and Kris recounts a dream about lies.
Subscribe to Quotomania on Simplecast or search for Quotomania on your favorite podcast app!Thomas McGuane, in full Thomas Francis McGuane III, (born December 11, 1939, Wyandotte, Michigan, U.S.), is an American author noted for his picaresque novels of violent action set amid rural landscapes.McGuane attended the University of Michigan, Olivet (Michigan) College, Michigan State University (B.A., 1962), Yale University (M.F.A., 1965), and Stanford University. McGuane's first three novels—The Sporting Club (1969), The Bushwhacked Piano (1971), and Ninety-two in the Shade (1973)—present the central plot and theme of his early fiction: a man, usually from a secure family, exiles himself from American society (which he despises for its materialism and triviality), removes himself to an isolated locale, and then finds a reason—alienation, attraction to a woman, rights to territory—to oppose another man in a succession of acts of escalating violence and revenge. The locales of his novels—Key West, Florida; northern Michigan; Montana—and his scenes of fishing and personal combat suggest the influence of Ernest Hemingway. Whereas McGuane's early novels are noted for their stylistic extravagance, a growing plainness of style developed in his later novels. They include Panama (1978), Nobody's Angel (1981), Something to Be Desired(1984), Keep the Change (1989), and Nothing but Blue Skies (1992). After a hiatus from writing novels, McGuane returned with The Cadence of Grass(2002), which depicts a Montana clan's colorfully tangled lives. It was followed by Driving on the Rim (2010), a freewheeling tale of a small-town doctor.McGuane also wrote short stories, collected in To Skin a Cat (1986), Gallatin Canyon (2006), Crow Fair (2015), and Cloudbursts (2018). In addition, he penned screenplays, several of which were adaptations of his novels. His essay collections—An Outside Chance (1980; rev. ed., 1990), Some Horses (1999), and The Longest Silence: A Life in Fishing (1999)—reflect mostly on leisure and the outdoors, especially his passion for fly-fishing and horseback riding. McGuane was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2010.From https://www.britannica.com/biography/Thomas-McGuane. There is no known cure for alcoholism, and the only proven treatment is spirituality. Jane Zarse is a recovering alcoholic who will never be cured. What she really has is a daily reprieve, contingent on the maintenance of her spiritual condition. When Zarse got tangled up emotionally, her spiritual condition suffered greatly. When a recovering alcoholic loses serenity, sobriety is usually next. Zarse is grateful that she didn't return to drinking, but if she stayed as miserable as she had become, there's no telling what could have happened. There are millions of people in recovery who are struggling with emotional sobriety. Most alcoholics come into AA as very sick people. They are maladjusted to life, unhappy, mentally defective, and out of touch with reality. They are so desperate to change in the beginning that they will do anything, but when they start getting better, some of them start slacking off. Alcoholics are childish, sensitive, and grandiose. When they stop working on recovery, their character defects become more pronounced. These character defects cause alcoholics to have personal problems that jeopardize their sobriety even after they work through all twelve steps. In Sober and Pissed Off , Zarse describes how she regained her emotional sobriety after becoming a dry, miserable alcoholic. She took her newfound freedom for granted and paid dearly for it. Sober and Pissed Off illustrates why sobriety is so much more than not drinking. This book is for the countless people in recovery who are physically sober and emotionally struggling. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soberisdope/message

In this episode, we wanted to dive in and talk to each other about our relationship with mental health. While this is a very "popular" topic, it is a positive one and after having this conversation, we both felt like it's one that everyone deserves to have. During this conversation, we learned about how we have each struggled mentally, give praise to the younger generation for being more open and vulnerable than we felt like ours was growing up and examine our unique patterns when it comes to our internal conflicts. 0:00 – Intro 2:51 – Payne's Background with Mental Health 4:40 – Mental Health in Music vs. Rest of the World 6:58 – Gen Z Paving the Way 9:37 – Emmanuel Acho & Lil Wayne's Conversation 13:00 – Being Vulnerable in Your Music & In Real Life 14:27 – How Education Opened My Eyes to My Mental Health 16:00 – Maintenance & Consistency 17:18 – Going Through Something Common & Relatable 19:10 – Athletes Setting New Milestones for The Future of Mental Health 26:00 – The Consequences of Ignoring Yourself 29:29 – Payne's Patterns with Women 32:20 – Not Living up to our Images of Success 34:35 – Going to Therapy 36:30 – Mental Health Triggers 40:12 – Experiences with Suicidal Thoughts 44:17 – Integrating Conversations into our Culture
In financial world, we talk about "Cost of Living" quite a bit. When deciding to move somewhere, we often mention how it's not a good idea to go somewhere because the cost of living is higher. How about life? When deciding to go one way or another at a crossroad, try thinking of "Cost of NOT Living". On this anniversary episode, I will share how we decided to adopt a dog even though everyone was trying to talk us out of it. Attending to the need of our new family member took priority over timeliness of this podcast release. When you decide what matters to you, your decisions are always aligned with your values. Be intentional and be mindful in what brings you true meaning and joy. You will never be wrong.

And as you know, our resources include time, money and even energy. We’re going to do a deep dive into the topic of managing our money in ways that bring glory to God. We’re also going to dig into current events and highlight some good news that came out of this pandemic. Finally, we’ll spend some time journaling on what this looks like for you. Let’s go! Not Living the Life You Want? Change This Habit. Y’all, I’ve made some massive mistakes with money. Growing up, I never really heard the word no very often. But that led to some problems when I got older. I didn’t understand that you had to make choices with your money, live within your means, use a budget, and save for things you really want. For years, I chose to live a life of barely getting by and putting most of my paychecks toward debt and payments. I called my mom often, asking her to put money in my bank account because I couldn’t make it to my next payday. But one day when I was around 24 years old, I had to call my mom again to ask her to put money in my bank account. I was so fed up. I knew I couldn't live like this. I knew that I wanted nothing more in my life than the dignity of paying for my own lifestyle, my own expenses and my own bills. That day, something in me changed. I decided I was going to work really, really hard to get out of debt. So, I tackled it like you tackle anything—one tiny step at a time. And exactly one week before I got engaged to my husband, Matt, I became debt-free. I made that final payment. I won’t ever forget how it felt to feel that freedom. I won’t ever forget how it felt to know that when I got paid on Friday, I was going to actually get to keep my money. I won’t forget how it felt to go into my engagement completely debt-free. But I also will never forget the shame and the fear that haunted me every single payday. We’ve all bought into this lie that this is just how it is. But I want to tell you that there’s a different way to live life. You don't have to struggle with your money forever. You don't have to barely get by. You don't have to feel fear when you check the mailbox. But in order for that to happen, you have to decide that you're going to do something different. You have to have that moment that I had and say, Never again. I'm not going to live like this anymore. I'm not going to depend on credit cards. I'm not going to be sinking in debt up to my eyeballs. Never again. Today, you have to think long term, not short term. Make the decision to change your life. When you do, you won’t just change your life—you’ll change your entire family tree. I know you can do it, and I can't wait to watch you win. Most Americans Are Now Doing This. Are You? In America, people are stockpiling their cash and savings rates are going up. I think we can all come to the conclusion that this is happening because of the pandemic and the current state of the economy. This is a really important topic in light of what we're talking about when it comes to managing your money. See, we've had this wake-up call during the pandemic like nothing we've ever experienced in our generation. These wake-up calls give us an opportunity to do something different. And until you have a reason to do something different, you’re not going to change. You're just going to keep getting by. And one of the things that the pandemic created in our world is a new perspective. It created an opportunity for you to think about how you manage your money. Let it be a wake-up call to actually save some money in an emergency fund. That way, the next time something like this happens, there will be a cushion between you and rock bottom. Are You Stressed About Money? Let’s Change That. “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but a foolish man devours all he has.” Proverbs 21:20 (NIV) “The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets.” Proverbs 21:20 (TLB) It’s really tempting to just spend whatever you make or whatever’s in your bank account. If you've got it, you can spend it. I love how these verses shine a light on this. The wise man or woman has stores of food and oil. The wise man or woman saves and has a cushion—some extra stored away for a rainy day. There’s wisdom in saving and being prepared. I want to be wise. I know you do too. So, I want to give you some questions to put this into practice. Process these questions and let them sink into your spirit. You can have actual change in your life, in your habits, and in your bank accounts. What were you taught about money growing up? How do you feel about it? Write down your feelings around money. What stresses you out about money? Let's get really specific here. What would it take for you to make a change?
