Clay renewability which can be achieved by placing a Pointed Dripstone underneath a Mud Block. Echo Shards have been added to the loot chests in the Ancient City and can be used to make a Recovery Compass to help you find your way back to your items when you die. In this episode, DuDs and Jimbo discuss Minecraft Java Snapshot 22W13A for Minecraft 1.19, The Wild Update, which ends the experimental features and adds the Allay mob and Ancient Cities to the update, it also includes a new Redstone room under the portal. Changes in this snapshot include Minecart variants (Hopper Minecarts, etc) no longer split into two items (matching the new Boat with Chest), only wool and carpets now block the sounds coming from Noteblocks, and the recipes for all Minecart variants are now shapeless. Plus, all our inventory problems are fixed with the 'One Block at a Time' update for April Fools - who's needs an inventory update when you don't have an inventory in the first place. In this episode, DuDs and Jimbo discuss snapshot 22W06A for Minecraft 1.18.2, which includes a range of bug fixes and adds a gameplay timer in South Korea. Ey Up Me Duck Challenge.. 4:25 Hi Mark, So how many of the 12 Challenges did Oh Beep manage to achieve? How many of the caching resolutions you made last January did you manage? Can you remember what they were????? The ones below were ours: To find 3000 caches this year - this was hard work and wouldn't have been achievable without (and you won't believe this!!) Moan-a-Lot's help and the rest of Team Compass To try and clear a 10km radius from house - we have done well but too many people putting new caches out!!!! Plus there are numerous puzzles I am still working my way through To clear at least another 60 days from our date found calendar (currently at 242/366). - completed although we still need 2 days to complete every date. One date in Jan and then the elusive Feb 29th To complete and find at least 10 Challenge caches - we have been completing Challenge caches on and off throughout the year - the ones we have mainly focused on though were the 3000 caches in a year and cache everyday for a full year To complete DT grid. Still need: got it down to 4 from 11 to do: 1-4 / 2.5-4.5 / 4-4 / 5-4 - so this is going on our list for this coming year To cache in at least 10 more English counties (currently 31/46) now on 44/46. Complete as only need Dorset & Isle of Wight now Find some Little Quest Caches (currently 1/48) – to get us into double figures at least - now got 10/48. This is good to say we still only had 1 by the beginning of August To find 20 more caches to help go towards completing the Jasmer Challenge (caches placed – months since geocaching began) - (140/176) : Now got 161/188 To complete caches placed (days). Find any caches in area with favourite points of over 25 - didn't quite manage this. Out of 145 caches with favourites of 25 or over within a 10km radius from home we still need to find 17 of them (some are puzzles :( and a couple are disabled) BUT we have found 128 of them. I’ve been listening to the show for at least a few months now after hearing it mentioned a few times on some of the geocaching related podcasts from here in the States. I think this Ey Up Me Duck challenge thing is some sort of contest… shoot, I don’t know, I can only understand Mark most of the time, and not a word of what Doctor D says! ;) So I think I’m submitting my entry for October! Here goes: I found two caches with ghost in the title and actually placed one with the word ghoul in it! The first cache I found was GC64MRE, “Ghost Stories: Glow In The Dark Under The Tree” and I was actually FTF! It was about 350 feet away from the posted coordinates but the hint got me to where I needed to be. The other cache was GCB5F0, “Ghost Children” which is a virtual at a local haunted location where the ghosts of the children killed in a collision with a train are said to push cars off of the tracks. I also placed a cache over the weekend… an idea I sort of got from listening to Geosnippits. I 3D printed a zombie hand and had my wife paint it to look all gruesome… I then placed it outside of a cemetery where it looks to be reaching up out of the dirt with a bison tube stuck on one of its fingers. It’s GC6596A, “The Lost Cemetery of Alexander the Ghoul”. Oh and what the heck does Ey Up Me Duck mean?! Keep up the offensiving! We also did a wherigo near Bourne which had clues to each stage which you had to decipher in rot 13. Annoyingly it wouldn't let you copy and paste so Ady would read out the code and I'd type them into a decoder. 3 timed during this wherigo he read me the letters to the last hint!! Arg,! Or do a tree climb at the mega, sped up on ropes but on the descent Ady pressed descender to steady himself - not a good idea as he then sped towards the ground back first! Hi Guys, I hope you get a chance to read this out we are Aussies and we always get a good laugh when you guys do the accents :) Managed to complete July's Ey Up Me Duck challenge in one day. We headed out to do some caching on the 17th of July with the plan that by the end of the day we will have achieved a 5 terrain cache earned the souvenir and also made our 700th find. The cache we chose as our D5 was called Animal facts : Giraffe, which was also our 700th find. It wasn't too difficult as we had scoped out GZ a few weeks earlier so knew exactly what we needed to make the find, we were delayed slightly when grabbing this cache as the council workers were grading a nearby dirt road. As a bonus we managed to find all 5 cache types in the one day. Keep up the good work guys Bye Damian D&V&L From Dave DeBaeremaeker.. Hey BananaSauce and Doctor D! I have finally gotten my ducks in a row and managed to qualify for an Eye Up Me Duck challenge. I did not manage to find all the types in 24 hours, but that was due to there being a 14 hour drive from North Carolina to Canada (Canada oi! oi!) in the middle of the attempt. However I got four of them (unknown, micro, small, regular), and managed to introduce 3 new people to geocaching. The time from start to finish was just under 30 hours. I've been meaning to tell this tale for quite sometime as I know we've all had similar happenings while out geocaching; and as the temperature start to rise in the Northern Hemisphere, what better time than now. 2012 brought an early spring to the great state of Minnesota, and like all good Minnesotan geocachers do when the sun shines just a bit brighter... I came out of "hibernation". I was very eager to start caching more you see, as winter caching in the upper Midwest can be very challenging. It's tough finding geocaches when buried 3 feet under snow, and difficult writing on logs when you can't feel your fingers. The day was gorgeous! The sun was bright, warm, and persuading the winter snow to melt away. I was enjoying a lunch hour at a nearby park known for it's great geocache hides. I had just got out of a "mind-numbing" meeting and the fresh air was revitalizing. Of course since I was dressed to impress" I knew I wasn't going to be able to make any real wooded finds, so while glancing at my phone I noticed a cache that was only a 100ft off of the paved trail.I figured I may as well look and see what the terrain was like before resorting to a P&G. As I neared the cache I saw a green welcoming meadow with some tree cover bordering on the opposite side of the trail. With only 100 and some odd feet to the cache, it had to be just in the treeline. Ultimately the obsession won the debate whether to attempt this cache or not, and found myself already halfway across the field. Upon arriving to the treeline the phone read another 50ft or so, but I told myself the accuracy was probably a bit off and the cache must be nearby. I let the GPS accuracy settle a little to realize my intuition was wrong. It seemed like I may have approached the woods on the wrong side, and if I wanted to avoid walking 2 miles I needed to do some bushwhacking. Ok so You're probably thinks so what? 30-40ft of bushwhacking?!? do it! Remember though the state of my attire and the impending mud and water that follows a winters thaw. Once again the internal conflict between common sense and caching addiction ensued. Which do you think won?..... I found my self tiptoeing into the brush feeling the squish of soft earth under my black leather dress shoes. With one hand holding the phone guiding me to the cache, the other swatting branches like flies I neared GZ... until I came upon the very thing I hoped I wouldn't have to deal with.... water! A small babbling brook stood between me and grabbing a smilie. It wasn't much of a stream but just wide enough and probably deep enough to cause me to stomp away with wet socks. "What's this? a bridge?" I noticed off to my left a small man-made bridge consisting of sticks and branches that some cacher most likely placed for people like me. The ones who weren't prepared with waterproof hiking boots. A sigh of relief as I know could cross untouched and bag the find...."SPLASH!" That's right.... up to my waist in cold, murky, stinky water. The surrounding foliage and stick bridge must have played an evil trick on my eyes as to this day I still don't understand what exactly happened. All I recall is the log I chose to step up decided to move out of it's way and my left leg went all the way under along with half of my right all the while releasing a very girly "shriek". Well.. I made the find, signed the log and slunk out of the woods on the opposite side I came in. I was wet, cold, embarrassed, and angry with myself for what just happened. As I look back now, I wish I would have been a vlogger then as it would have made one heck of a video! The morale of the story.... leave an extra set of dry clothes in your vehicle! G’Day Mark Sorry I didn’t back to you earlier but I have only recently listened to the podcast and heard a couple of queries about my email. With regard to Trapezia Lick, I first tried to find the cache in June 2009 with my old yellow garmin etrex H and had 3 or 4 attempts over a 2 week period. The hill to the cache is steep but the cache is at the bottom where it is not too bad. There is a lot of tree cover so it is hard to get a good reading on the GPS. There is also more than one fallen tree in the area and I reckon I have searched under every one but obviously not the right one. I had another couple of tries in September of 2012, this time using my new eTrex 30 but again the cache remained elusive. I will be back there again later this year and will have another go. As far as differences go between running in Perth and running in England well to sum it up in one word is ‘mud’ The area around Perth is sand and even after heavy rain it is just wet sand. The paths I run along in the UK turn to muddy tracks after just a light shower. Not many people in Perth own a pair of wellington boots but it seems they are standard issue for anyone in the UK that does a bit of walking. However all that rain and mud does have a huge benefit. It produces a lot of green foliage. My wife used to tell me (she was born in England) that Perth isn’t as green as England and I never believed her until I visited. The paths through the woods in England are usually lined lush trees and shrubs with moss growing on the fallen trees and moist leaf litter on the ground, very different to a path through the bush here. I have attached 2 photos. One is a path along the River Itchen near Fairoak, Hampshire and the other taken along a track around a lake not far from my home. Both were taken in the summer time. Looking forward to trying to beat my nemesis next time. Cheers ChrisRG Chris Gore From Dave DeBaeremaeker Hey Oh Beep Folks I just caught the first half of the latest episode and was impressed by the tale from Shorty Knits on her epic attempt to complete the Church Micro challenge. Personally I think she should have been entered into the drawing. She certainly did all she could have to complete it, and was only thwarted by Mother Nature. I did want to respond to a comment that Banana Sauce said about being surprised about the lack of caches with the name Church in them. This is not because of a lack of caches placed at churches, but rather not using Church in the name. In my 4000-ish finds I only have 5 caches with the word Church in the title. To further outline my point, I have exactly 5 caches in a 30 mile radius of my town with the name Church in the title, 3 of which I have found. However there are an estimated(because I am going from memory) 20 caches, out of the 400 or so caches I've found in my 30 mile radius that are placed at church's. This number likely quadruples if you go with caches placed near churches (i.e. where you can see a church from GZ). Mind you, I live in the US South, aka the Bible Belt, and there are churches pretty much everywhere you go. I was unable to complete this challenge. Hopefully I'll have better luck with the next one. Thank you Mark, you called me out for being "competitive" and I am. Challenge accepted! Like I told you, we don't have "Church Micros" here in the states. What we have are "Spirit Quest" caches in cemeteries. In fact, of my 5700 finds I had found only two with the word "church" in the title. I did a quick search and found that there are exactly six caches containing the word "church" within a 30-mile radius of my house. I knew the chances were slim, but I wasn't about to let that stop me from trying. One of the caches had a string of DNFs and was clearly missing, so that one was dropped from my list right away. I headed out Sunday afternoon, in 15*F temps and getting over a bad cold, to find the other 5. The first cache I went to was Church Road Park (GCX1W0), which was about a half an hour from my house. The park was not surprisingly abandoned, and I made the relatively easy trek to GZ where I stood scratching my head. It's very possible that the snow and frozen ground caused me to search the wrong part of the right host, but it's also a possibility that the host has been altered since the cache was last found. Or it's even more possible that I was searching the wrong host altogether, although I did expand my search by up to 50 feet in all directions. DNF. Bummer. I remembered that I had a backup "church" cache about 50 miles in the other direction that was near where I pick up my son from his dad's house, so there was still a chance of finding five. I moved on to the second cache, Churchill Island (GC1N3CT). The walk to GZ was quiet and peaceful. I stopped for a few pictures along the way. I got to GZ and searched for a good half an hour, digging through the foot of snow on the ground with a stick, poking along in the hopes that I would stumble across the container. Unfortunately the snow made this one much too difficult, and the GPS bounce didn't help matters. Even a quick PAF didn't help. So I had to walk away without a smiley. Strike two. By this time I was cold and frustrated. But I am not a quitter. I wasn't far from the third cache, Churchville Cemetery "Illinois Spirit Quest" (GC2V1M1), so I headed over. It's a multi placed by my friend, Dutchlandian, from Holland. (Hi Ans!) I arrived at the posted coords and thought there was no way I'd be able to read the headstone with all of the snow. Luckily though I was able to brush away the top few inches, which was enough to read all of the inscriptions. I did some quick calculations and was off to the final. Finally! I am so glad this one is hidden where and how it is, so that I could get at least one smiley today! I was feeling a little more optimistic now, and moved on to Who Has a "Church Key" (GC29ZHV). The closest parking was about 500 feet away and I had to walk along a busy road to get to GZ. I wasn't sure what to expect here, given the large percentage of DNFs and the fact that the description says it's not winter friendly. I was happy to find that the "rock" (a Rolling Rock bottle cap) that the cache is under according to the hint was in full view! Somehow there was no snow on the ground in only this one small area. I seemed to be on a roll. But then ... I tried to pick up the cache. It wouldn't budge. I found a stick and tried to pry it up. It started to move a little, so I wedged my finger between it and the ground and pulled. Something came loose all right, but it was just the bottle cap, and the cache itself was still stuck in the frozen ground. The wire attaching the cap to the cache pulled right through the cap. Oh no! I broke the cache! (An apology email was sent to the C.O.) I tried and tried, but the ground was just too frozen and I could not get the container unstuck. Despite finding the cache, I could not put my signature on the log so no smiley here for me. So at only one find out of four attempts, most people would probably just go home. Not me though. I was only a mile or so from the last cache, Anybody Got a Church Key? (GC5AF83), and had no choice but to finish my list. This one is on private property (with permission of course), around the back side of a small local brewery, Church Street Brewing Company. Even though it was Sunday and there was no one around, I still felt a bit uneasy walking around the building. I was very happy that this was a quick and easy find! Retrieval and replacement on the other hand, not so easy being only 5 feet tall. But I got the job done. Final stats for the day: 4 hours, 70 miles, 5 attempts, 2 finds. February Challenge = DNF. But when I check the “Who Favorited this cache…” their favorite points weren’t listed. I’m assuming they either forgot to do it or changed their mind or don’t know how to do it. I am not into caching in wind chills below 0 degrees F. I want to thank Dave Debaeremaeker for his comment on the joys of a road trip in the USA or Canada. (cue Dr. D for his trade mark statement when the name of the country Canada is spoken) Sadly, your fine and great country is lacking in size to have the option of experiencing this wonderful event. That said, this gives you yet another reason to cross the pond and visit. I do one question or correction, depending of your point of view, for Dave Debaeremaeker. I am not aware of any highways in the USA that do not have a posted speed limit. Montana did, for a short time, have the interstate highways listed as "reasonable and prudent". Sadly the law makers and enforcement officers did not believe that speeds over 100 MPH were either. So they posted a speed limit. Interstate speeds range from 55-75. Speeds are set by the states. Texas has a few highways posted at 85 MPH. Being a truck driver since 1986 I have been in 47 states and experienced all the speeds listed above. Keep up the excellent work on this fine podcast. One last item. What do you and your listeners think about changing "dumb things geocachers do" to "things Dr. D might do". Nemesis Geocaches.. GC49Y2V SB3W-04 by Team-Triplet and Cerises Dumb Stuff Geocachers Do.. From Collin French.. So, I was out last night, cheeky spot of caching. Had the gps with me, phone is in the car. It's about midnight. Got to GZ, couldn't make the hint make any sense so started looking at the logs. We had been here about 15 minutes. Checked a couple more places and my buddy called it and we headed back to the car. Grabbed my phone and looked and the cache had been disabled sine 31 December! I have my PQ set to ignore disabled and the gps to filter them so I have no idea how we ended up hunting a disabled cache, at midnight, in a town at zero degrees C... Ask Doctor D.. From Yorkshire Yellow.. Dear Dr D, What’s your opinion on maintaining another cacher’s cache? We've all seen it when we’re out caching. It may be a full log roll or a wet cache, it might be soggy and manky contents, or a damaged container. Should we maintain the cache? If so, how far should we go? If we do carry out maintenance for a CO, are we encouraging lazy cache ownership? I’d be interested to hear you expert opinion. Love, Yorkshire Yellow Yorkshire Yellows View.. My view on this is that I’ll carry out basic maintenance if the cacher is a regular one, someone who’s known to me, or someone who is clearly usually what I'd consider to be a responsible CO, as they might just be too busy to attend to maintenance and quickly as they might like to. If I am planning a walk to attempt a series and see something that looks like it might need maintenance, I’ll drop a quick message to the CO. I've sometimes asked them if I can do any minor maintenance for them, even if it’s not clear from any of the cache pages if any maintenance is actually needed. What I won’t do is carry out maintenance, or offer to in advance to, for any low numbers hiders (as they should be able to do this themselves quite easily), people who aren't that active in the game any more or haven't logged on to the website in a long while. I will definitely not carry out maintenance on behalf of the small number of what I’d call “serial non-maintainers”. For example, in my part of the world there was someone a while back who was an active cacher and reasonably regular hider, but they never seemed to maintain their existing caches, and either left them to be disabled by a review or disabled them themselves if there was a pattern of DNF and/or ‘Needs maintenance’ logs. GGH Tips.. A terrific option for backup power in your cachebag are Lithium AA, AAA, C, or D batteries (provided you have a GPSR or flashlight which uses those batteries of course). Lithium batteries last up to 10 years in storage (e.g. the bottom of your geocaching bag) and they last much longer than either similar alkaline or NiHM batteries (as a bonus they also weight less). You'll probably find that it's worth the extra cost for the backups you carry on the trail. Feedback.. From Dave Debaeremaeker.. Heya Mark & Sam I am 2/3rds of the way thru episode 56, but had to pause when I pulled into the parking lot at work. I'll catch the rest on the commute home, but for now I have some comments. First of all, the Americans do have an annoying way of formatting their dates. Month-Day-Year. In Canada (and I believe in the UK aswell) they do Day-Month-Year. I can never keep the dates format straight between the two, so I typically go in the proper sort order:Year-month-day, or just spell it out : January 12, 2015. Second, re: the comment from the fellow who did 800 miles and 4 events in a single day. I don't think you fully appreciate the joy that is a good long road trip. Britain is simply not large enough to get the experience of many many hours spent on the open highway, with the tunes cranked, the engine rev'd, and watching the world pass by your car windows. Driving can be dang annoying when there is a lot of traffic but there are many places in the US where you can drive for hours on our interstate highways and barely see another car. Those are the roads that many a car-based rock anthem has been written about. As for the date of 12-13-14 (Yankee formatting), I also had an adventure that day. I have a group of geocaching friends - we call ourselves Team Awesomesauce - that goes on big adventures together. On the date in question two of our group (FailedApparatus and HoosierSunshine - pronounced: Who's-yer-sunshine) were hosting a geocaching trivia event that evening in Columbia South Carolina.Columbia is about 3 hours from my house, so I left early on that morning, met up with the group in Charlotte North Carolina, and together we cached ourselves to Columbia. Along the way we did some amazing caches. March 14th.i.e. in Yankee formatting 3-14. This year is special as 3-14-159:26:53 is pi correct to the first 8 decimal places. Cheers From Ey Up Me Duck Before the New Year me and The Old Soldier sat and discussed (I said what I'd like to do and he listened & agreed!!!) our geocaching aims for the year and came up with the following list. 1- to listen to the Oh Beep show the week after it is aired. I am currently very bad and tend to listen to them in batches, although I have nearly caught up & only have about 10 older episodes to listen to now (the May & June ones) 2 - to find (and log Dr D!!!) 3000 caches this year. This is to go towards a challenge set by Nadiagoescaching during the year. 3 - To try and clear a 10km radius from house 4 - To clear at least another 60 days from our date found calendar (currently at 242/366 days). 5 - To complete and find at least 10 Challenge caches - I think we managed to grab 3 or 4 of these at the weekend!!! 6- To complete DT grid (12 to go) 7 - To cache in at least 10 more English counties (currently 31/46 counties) 8 - Find some Little Quest Caches (currently 1/48) – to get us into double figures at least 9 - To find 20 more caches to help go towards completing the Jasmer Challenge (caches placed – months since geocaching began) - (140/176) 10 - Find any caches in area with favourite points of over 25 From Misha.. I have also decided to set the Oh Beep team a Monthly Challenge and see how many (of the 12) you achieve by the end of the year!!! I have taken into consideration that you don't like caching much when it is too cold (or too hot) so you have more time to spend at home, sat in front of your laptop or with a pen and paper. Also because January has already started I will give you until the end of February to complete this challenge (but you'll still get one in the first week of Feb too!!!). So my first challenge to you is to work out (solve) and find 2 puzzle caches. I am giving you about 6 weeks to complete this which I don't think is too difficult. Me and Ady went out on Sunday and managed to find 20 puzzles, so 2 in 6 weeks is very doable (is that a word!). Annoyingly when we got in late that evening, a challenge cache had just been published by TeamTriplet asking for 25 puzzle caches to be found in a day!!! - we were gutted BUT far too cold to go out again! If you want to know of some of the easier ones out there let me know and I will tell you which ones to look at! That's all from me for now. Last Week.. BananaSource had a pathetic attempt at the SB3W series, set by Team-Triplet and Cerises. Out of the 9 caches, in the series, he found a grand total of 1. GC49Y0C SB3W-01, which was "a bison tube up a tree, above the floodline" BananaSource also had a terrible dream. He was out caching with Moan-A-Lot, mopping up a series he'd already started and helping Moan-A-Lot find the ones he still needed to finish the series. Suddenly, BananaSource was driving through a corn field with Miss Watto navigating. Eventually, they stopped and started looking for a cache. Not check the GPSr before going out. Nemesis Geocache.. Dave DeBaeremaeker I had a different sort of nemesis cache.As you know I am Canadian, but live in the US. In Canada. Just a short distance from where our family lives, exists one of the oldest trees in Canada. It is called the Comfort Maple. I didn't know this tree existed until I started geocaching, but ever since I discovered it about 4 years ago, I have wanted to do the geocache at the tree.We tend to visit family once a year or so (its a 13 hour drive), but every time we go I went to the site of the Comfort Maple, and hunted for the cache. Every time, almost like a conspiracy, the cache has gone missing just before I arrive, and replaced sometime after I'm gone. Every. Single. Time.Until this last time, when Lady Luck, The Fates, or just good living, finally cut me a break and I was able to grab the cache there.After seeing the hide, there is no way I missed it before - it was definitely gone.I have a blog post about the Comfort Maple here: The Comfort Maple Travelbug Race.. "The Geocaching Association of Great Britain (GAGB) was established in 2003 to provide a national geocaching organisation and serve as a UK and Ireland point of contact for geocachers, landowners, the media and others with an interest in geocaching. We maintain a database containing details of landowner consents and/or restrictions on the placement of caches, in respect of many parts of the UK and Ireland; provide a GAGB members' forum; maintain codes of conduct and geocaching guidance; liaise with landowners as necessary; offer support to geocachers generally and provide a national organisation for enquiries about geocaching from the public, the media and others. The GAGB also produces a bi-monthly full-colour e-magazine, 'Seeker', containing UK and Ireland caching news, reviews and articles. Last year we celebrated our 10th birthday by holding CITO events across the UK. We decided to make this an annual event, on the second weekend of September and so across the 13th and 14th of September we are inviting cachers from all across the UK and Ireland to join us in attending, or even hosting an event. This year we wanted to step away from the typical "picking tin cans out of a layby" CITO and really want to focus on the conservational aspect that often gets overlooked. We have had several events published so far, from the South coast to the North of England and the tasks being performed are really exciting. In Thirsk, volunteers will be clearing an ancient dyke ready for archaeologists to get in and explore In Horsham, the team will be assisting with heathland management and birch tree removal In North Somerset, attendees will be mowing a meadow with scythes, the most eco friendly way to manage the meadow At Weymouth, folks will be getting involved with a nature reserve and removing invasive species. And there is lots more to do We really want to encourage as many cachers as possible to come out and support these events. Of course you may not have an event close to you, so why not host one yourself? We all play the game in our own way, hiding caches is not where I get my enjoyment from the game. There is the argument that as cachers should give back by creating hides. Geocaching is community, like-minded (weird) friends. Geocaching is the thrill of knowing something that others don't (there's a cache there!). Geocaching is a great escape from the pressure and rigours of daily life. 2. Geocaching is not a sport. It is not (to me) a commercial enterprise. Others will disagree with that, especially where Groundspeak is concerned. It is not worth risking mental or physical health over.

How To Make An Evil Magnetic Log Geocache by TheEvilGeocacher http://youtu.be/8vyMMpmnepY Traveling With Children... Pre-Journey... If you're taking devices; i.e., iPods, tablets, phones, hand held gaming machines, e readers charge them Clear the car out of anything not needed for the trip. That extra space will make the journey a little more comfortable and you won't have the stress of trying to fit more stuff in. Administer any travel sickness remedies - tablets, bracelets etc. Also make sure they make it in to the car, in an easy to reach place, with you. Don't ask if anyone needs the toilet before you leave, insist they go to the toilet. Prepare a bag, which will be easily accessible during the journey, that contains the things you will need during the journey. Chargers, drinks, snacks, etc. Think about how you want the kids to be entertained during the journey. Pre-load devices with films, games, books etc. Plan surprises - keep a couple of things back to surprise the kids with if they're looking bored. Headphones - three films, games, etc playing at the same time can be distracting. Headphones can be a godsend. Pack wipes, towels, sick bags etc. Just in case. Load some caches along the route in to your GPSr/phone. Try to plan them around when you'd expect to take breaks. Take a couple of outdoor toys; e.g. a football. If you stop at a service station with a grassed area, the kids can burn off some energy The Journey... Smallest in the middle. Two main reasons. One, so you can see out the rear view mirror. Two, the smallest tends to swing their legs. After a few hours of little feet banging the back of your seat you may be a little on edge. Take regular breaks - how often will depend on how far you're travelling. Keep everything you need for the journey close to hand. Make it as comfortable as possible; loose comfy clothing, pillows etc Take a spare set of clothing

Dr Who enthusiast erects full-size Dalek in his Muddiford garden By NDJDawn | Posted: March 05, 2014 Story from The North Devon Journal A full-scale Dalek has appeared outside a cottage in Muddiford, attracting the attention of Dr Who enthusiasts across the county. Phil Stroud, 65, built the Dalek seven years ago as a project with Barnstaple Youth House and as an avid Dr Who fan celebrated the 50th anniversary by putting the character on display. The figure currently looks out onto the road, which has surprised many passers-by and it has even been registered on a geocaching website. "The Dalek has become like the camel statues on the motorway, I suppose it is a bit of landmark now," said Phil. "I built it with the youth house years back; it took a couple of months to build. And when there was a commotion about the Dr Who 50th anniversary over Christmas, I thought this would be the perfect time to put it on show. "I was a bit sneaky when I took the Dalek out of the garage, it was late in the evening and I had to bring the sculpture out in pieces and assemble it in the garden." "I originally put it outside thinking it would just stay for a few weeks. Now it has drawn so much attention, I suppose I'm stuck with it." Phil has been sculpting and creating props throughout his life and career, following his study of 3-D Design at the Guildford School of Art, he went on to create work for artist David Mach and even created a sculpture for the Imperial War Museum. The Dalek figure is functional and has been used for fundraising events in Devon with the Barnstaple Youth House, and it was even entered into a dancing competition. "I took the Dalek to a Dr Who themed dancing competition in Torquay a while back too and won a prize," said Phil. "We had the theme music and people saying 'exterminate', it was brilliant." "So many people have stopped by the house and asked me about it, one man even offered to buy it; of course I told him it wasn't for sale. But then he showed me a photo of one he was building himself which is great." "I will keep the Dalek in front of my house now for as long as I can." The two hour training session will be provided by Mike Eckersley, Chairman of Market Rasen Walkers are Welcome. For: Can help reduction of saturation in an area - allowing more opportunity for others Someone else may have an idea that works better in an area that has been monopolised by one person May make maintenance easier - less caches to maintain could make it quicker and easier to do so It may help improve quality - why waste your limited hides on bad caches/locations If the limit is reached and the CO want's to put another cache out, then they archive one they already have out. This releases an area for someone else. It helps refresh areas for hunters. For every person who leaves the game because of such a rule, more will fill the void Against: People should be allowed to hide as many as they want - its their time, money and effort There are always ways around these things - multiple accounts, etc. So, whats the point? If one listing site imposes this rule, then people will move to another that doesn't If its just about quality - finders can limit their search criteria (by favourite points for example) Without people willing to hide caches, there is no game - they should be encouraged, not discouraged Where is the evidence for reduced quality/maintenance resulting from the number of hides a CO has? I'm amazed that a large proportion of folk don't, I know for a fact I have a full log in 1 of my caches but a certain thing called real life has meant I haven't been able to get to it to replace it yet, and I appreciate it when they do get swapped for me as it gives me a little more time to go caching myself UKGeocacher Yes. Approx 10% of your total finds. This ensures that you know what makes a quality hide. Also 2 many maint becomes a problem Sarah Clark: I don't think there should be a limit but I do think COs need to be responsible. If you can't maintain what you have then you shouldn't be making new hides. the Monkey King: There shouldn't be a limit, otherwise there wouldn't be any more caches to find. Use your own local knowledge - think about those great places you explored as a child. What about the places you've discovered as an adult? Word of Mouth - you may find that others know of those great locations. Do you have parents/grandparents you could ask for tips from? Jacaru “They usually come about just from walking the dogs and seeing something that grabs my attention. Or word of mouth or a recommendation. Cold War was because I mentioned caching to a policeman and he said he knew somewhere that would be good for one.” Research - using the internet or resources in your local library. Even the smallest of villages have a website now - they can be useful for finding things you may not have known about. Most local libraries have a section for Local Studies where you can find books, maps etc relating to an area. the Monkey King - I actually use the cache map from Geocaching Australia that shows caches that are hidden from groundspeak and the Australian sites, and look for where no caches have been hidden. I then take a trip to a potential area and do a recce looking for something above and beyond. I refuse to make an obvious pile of stick or stones, so there must be something at the site to make it worthwhile, otherwise I don't hide a cache. Do a recon of an area - There are several approaches to this take note of interesting places when out walking your dog (like Jacaru) - or just out in general. Be observant of things around you when out and about go out with the sole intention of finding a great place look at areas with no hides or with low hide numbers and go out to see if there is anything of interest that may deserve a cache hide (like the monkey kind). The GCDoc - for me it's a lot of recon walks through areas with low hide numbers Once you’ve found an area - check for cache saturation (Groundspeak have a page to tell you how to do this https://support.groundspeak.com/index.php?pg=kb.page&id=199) Geocaching Mistakes to Avoid... Don't forget your pen Don't forget your GPSr or mobile phone Make sure your device has caches loaded on to it for the area you're caching in Don't forget to check the cache type/description etc. There is nothing more frustrating than getting to GZ and finding that its a puzzle cache and you thought it was a traditional. Or the description may hold clues as to gear you may need, or possible hiding place. Don't forget water/food if you're planning a long caching day Don't forget spare batteries Make sure you know where you parked the car
This week on The Oh Beep! Geocaching Podcast we're interviewing GeoPaulVlogger. Because of Geocaching... None this week Feedback... The Old Soldier came through with his Geocaching police story... 24 Hour Event Police Saga Well as most people have heard various bits of the tale it may be best to let you all know what happened and hopefully save others from the fun and games. We had entered into the first 24 Hour Caching Event set up through GEM by Jacaru. It all started off so well with a quick nap and then off to Lincoln picking up some caches along the A46 before doing a couple of cycle routes we had planned which pulled in quite a few caches and worked up an appetite so we headed into Lincoln looking for somewhere to eat and still picking up Caches as we went. We found a “Clown” that would do us some fast food so after filling energy levels up we thought we would grab some caches showing close by before heading back to Event HQ. The few caches we had spotted were around an industrial estate so we thought they would be easy cache and dashes before the drive back. It started out OK with a couple of quick finds but then at another cache we spotted a car drive slowly passed with two men in it. We quickly re-hid the cache and headed back to the car, noticing the car that passed us was parked up at an industrial unit further down the road. Thinking nothing of it we headed around to another cache, Denise waited in the car while I nipped into the bushes (To get a cache!!). While signing the log the same car appeared again this time parking a short distance behind our car. This left me with the dilemma of what to do next, Denise was safe in the car with the doors locked but I was stuck in the bushes with two strangers sat in a car with the engine and lights off. I gave it a few minutes to see if they would move on but no joy so with time pushing on I decided to just head back to the car and head back to Event HQ. The two guys did nothing until we had taken the first turn when I noticed they had been following but with the lights off!! Now starting to feel very uneasy we realised we either had some sort of security/police on our tail or someone that was hoping for a better place to rob/attack us. Seeing as the best place to do the latter was behind us we realised we had police following us for some reason, the chance to test this arose at a set of traffic lights as we headed for the A46 which I slowed for and then went through on yellow and the two guys tailing us followed us about 5 cars back but decided to run a red by going around other cars! We definitely had police following us. As we got onto the A46 and went around an Island I noticed the unmarked car had been joined by two marked vehicles and as we got onto the dual carriageway the road behind lit up in a sea of blue lights and sirens as we had a marked car shoot in front of us joined by one to the side and the unmarked behind us also showing off his pretty lights. Rather than blocking the A46 I pointed at a sign near us saying parking 1/4mile and motioned for the police to move down to it with us. Once in the Parking area we proceeded to have a chat with half of Lincolnshire’s police force and found out we the suspects of metal theft in the area. Something I found funny as we had the bikes on the back so loading up would have been a slow job! When the marked cars were happy with our status and stories they were happy to let us carry on our way, not before they mentioned one of the guys in the unmarked was a cacher so should have known better. Having a chat with him got to the bottom of the problem as he said he had the app on his phone and that area didn’t have any caches, he was a bit shocked when I showed him the GPSr with all the caches in Lincoln as it turned out he was a not a premium member thinking the official phone app showed him everything and knew nothing of Premium membership. At least he was now more aware of all the caches he could get and may leave some other cacher’s alone. As can be expected we were late back to Event HQ and being fairly new to GEM we did not have any contact numbers so arrived to a multitude of questions from those that had waited for our return. Thankfully it has not put us off at all but we do avoid some places after dark and thankfully have learned about Phone A Friend lists, something that would have been very helpful on that fun evening. This year’s event we will be more prepared with contact numbers to hand and a caching route that keeps us well away from Lincoln!! Ask Doctor D... Nicola Noad and Tammy Ellis founded 'Challenge Twelve' in December 2012 when they decided to take part in 12 challenges over 12 months to raise £1,200 for 12 different charities. But this year they are aiming to raise £12,000 and their next challenge is a Geocaching Trail starting and ending at Southwell House, Highbridge, on February 23 from 10am to 3pm - in aid of Alice's Escapes which offers free holidays for terminally ill children. Offer to hold the GPSr, you’ll have the advantage then 2. You’re younger and fitter, run ahead to GZ 3. If you can’t hold the GPSr/phone keep asking what the hint is and what previous logs say 4. If out on a cache and dash, make sure you’re first out of the car (make sure you do this safely) 5. Read ahead. Find out which caches your adult is taking you to and then read the logs/hints before you go out. 6. If you have brothers/sisters/friends who are out caching with you take it in turns to feign injury when near the cache. Whilst the adult is distracted with the “injured”, the other child keeps on searching to grab the find. 7. Send them on a wild goose chase. Point to a place you can’t reach and say you think you see the cache there. Meanwhile, look where you think the cache actually is. 8. From The Monkey King G'day Mark, Probably most of the caches here are traditional types, and a lot of the ones I have found are of the 'unnatural pile of sticks' variety, but the more I find, the better the cache hides are getting. For my own hides I try to put them in hard to find/get to places or make them very sneaky in the more public areas. I am a fan of drilling a small tree branch to hide a bison tube in for example. If I put a cache in an easy to find area, I try to make that cache interesting to make up for the easy find. We also have two main ways of hiding caches here in Australia - GC and GA (Geocaching Australia). GA allows for virtual/locationless caches, something that groundspeak 'grandfathered', which is a pity, as they can be more fun to find. If you want to make a locationless caches, then you can do so through GCA, as you can list a cache from anywhere in the world. We've made these descriptions as simple as possible, for the sake of brevity and your sanity, if you'd like more information on the different types of Geocaching.com caches go to http://www.geocaching.com/about/cache_types.aspx Traditional Geocache Bread and butter caches. Get the co-ordinates and go out and find the container. The simplest form of cache. Mystery or Puzzle Caches A bit more complicated. Often you need to solve a puzzle to get the correct co-ordinates. The puzzle can either be in the cache description, or it may be something you need to do in the field. It can also mean a cache that doesn't fit in to the other categories. Multi-Cache A cache type done in stages, each on giving a clue to the location of the next. Eventually leading you to the cache itself. EarthCache This is an educational cache type. You go to a location and learn something about the earth. To log the cache you often have answer questions about the geology of the location. For more information go to www.earthcache.org Letterbox Hybrid Uses clues, not co-ordinates. When the cache box has been found, the finder stamps the log with their own stamp and then stamps their own log book with the stamp in the box. For more information go to www.letterboxing.org Event Cache A gathering of Geocachers at a certain location and time. Cache In Trash Out Event (CITO) Geocachers gather at a given location and "clean up". Mega-Event Cache An event attended by 500+ people, with arranged activities. Wherigo™ Cache Players load a "cartridge" in to their device. When opened it will give you a location to go to and a task or tasks to carry out. Once completed, it will then reveal further tasks - usually requiring you to go to another location. The tasks can be as simple as answering a question about a location. Often the final stage is a cache hide. Learn more at Wherigo.com. Geocaching HQ Geocache You go to the Geocaching Hq in Seattle and log it as a find. Lookup GCK25B, for more information. GPS Adventures Maze Exhibit A find of this type represents attendance at the GPS Adventures Maze Exhibit or a regional variation. GPS Adventures Mazes are designed to teach people of all ages about GPS technology and geocaching through interactive science experiences. Lab Caches The are Beta chache types, a way of Groundspeak to experiment with ideas that they may, or may not, introduce properly in to the game. Grandfathered Caches Virtual - You go to a location and carry out a task, such as take a picture or answer a question about it. This then forms part of your log. The idea is that the location itself is the reward, not a container. Webcam Cache - You go to a defined location, where a webcam is viewing, then get someone (or do it yourself) to get a screen grab from the website the cams feed is viewed on. You have to be in the picture. Project A.P.E Cache - Part of the advertising campaign for Planet of The Apes. A series of ammo cans, containing props from the film. Locationless Caches - With this type you find a defined object and log its co-ordinates. Hi Mark, Sam and Sophie, I have finally got around to listening to your podcasts (although I have just noticed there is one more (the latest) for me to listen to). I have really enjoyed them. It felt just like I was sat in the room with you. I can't remember all the questions you have raised but here are our answers to the ones I can remember. GPS vs Phone - I'm with Sophie on this one as we tend to go out for the whole day and the battery on the phone runs out. We don't mind the phone for cache and dashes and also if there is a new one in the area and we can't be bothered to mess about putting it on the GPS but generally we prefer the GPS and if are in another country then we don't have roaming charges - though this nearly backfired on us last year when we went to Cyprus because although we knew we had loaded 500 plus caches onto the GPS when we powered it up in our villa it only showed 10!!!! We were devastated. Luckily Philip (brother) was due out two days later so he brought the laptop out and saved the day! Caching and holidays - we now tend to plan holidays in places where we can cache too. New Year Caching Resolutions: well last year we had found just over 200 caches and I said to the Old Soldier that I'd like to get to 500 by the end of the year ... we are now almost at the 2000 mark!!!! So this year our aim is get 2000 caches, get over 100 on a day, cache in at least one more country and cache in at least 5 more counties and complete 2 challenge caches. Urban Vs Rural - we enjoy both. If we have a lot of time (or if we are with the Scouts and want to wear them out so they sleep at night) we tend to do countryside walks. But sometimes we only have a few hours spare and so then we do ones we can park near. It also depends on the weather. It is not nice caching in the pouring rain so wouldn't plan to do a walk but might do a few round town. We also prefer trails where we can cycle around due to the Old Soldiers injuries. Most important piece of equipment (apart from GPS and resources). The Old Soldier says tweezers and I say my extending torch / magnet thing. GeoSnippits Geocaching Videos: What's in Your Geocaching Pack? by Andy "Head Hard Hat" Smith. Sam is going old school this week, with his choice for video of the week. What's in your geocaching pack is a common discussion between Geocachers. This video shows some options: Discussion... Tony Liddell (on Facebook) - I started out with the phone, then got myself a gps but always preferred the phone, despite the disadvantage with battery life and sometimes accuracy Andrew Wood (on Facebook) - I cached exclusively with an iPhone from 2009 to the start of 2012 when I bought an etrex 30. Since then I've used a combination of the two, as each has its advantages. Battery life is obviously a major plus for the GPSr, but I couldn't live without the "always online" features of the phone. I've never found a difference between them with accuracy. Corey Stevens (on Google+) - The smartphone has many pros for being a versatile "swiss knife" style electronic tool, but nothing beats the accuracy of the GPSr. I can keep my gloves on in the cold without buying specialty gloves, it's waterproof and tons more rugged than most smartphones, and my batteries last hours longer! Neal (Gackt) (on CacheFace) - Smartphone. It obviously depends on which model you use, and what software you use on it, but if you choose wisely the phone has equal or better battery performance and accuracy. My android phone has c:geo running, with offline maps installed, a number of PQs plumbed in so have thousands of cache details at my finger tips for when in no phone signal areas. The ability log caches when and where I want. The ability to receive emails with new published caches and store the details into it anywhere I am at any time. I have compared the accuracy for placing caches along side my GPSr, there is no issues there. The dedicated GPSr IMO has almost had its day. The only time I get my GPSr out of my back now is if I need to have a photo taken with it for TerraCaching locationless caches, and that is all. The only benefit my GPSr has over my phone now is ruggedness, but I get around this fairly well with a good phone case. Norman Hicks (desmognathus) (on CacheFace) - I still carry my GPSr, but do most navigating any logging with the iPhone. Sometimes the GPSr is closer, sometimes the iPhone is. Occasionally, they even agree about something. I do have a good backup battery for the phone in case I run it down. I find the iPhone to be steadier under heavy canopy, which I would not have expected. Perhaps this relates to the way the satellite signals are processed? Derek Carter (on CacheFace) - For urban caching, I use my iPhone since I can keep it on the charger in the car, but I have my GPSr handy just in case the phone seems too far off. Out on the trail, I use my GPSr pretty much exclusively. The batteries last pretty much all day, and I can carry an extra set with me easily. That way, the phone stays charged in case of emergencies. I don't see the "equal or better" battery performance on my phone when running the geocaching app. My phone drains rather quickly when apps are running in the background, especially any that use a constant location tracking system. This can help you learn more about the area - the safest routes etc GPSr Con’s It can be an expensive investment for a device that is only used for geocaching Once away from the PC, whats on you GPSr is what you have to go geocaching with. No way of contacting people if you get in to trouble - unless you take a mobile with you Requires pre-planning. Mobile Phone Pro’s You have the up to date cache information at your fingertips - assuming you have a data connection You can load with offline information If you don’t get on with how one app works, there are plenty of others that may be more your type If you get in to trouble, you have your mobile with you The apps don’t stop at helping you find geocaches. There are also plenty to help solve puzzle caches in the field. The phone looks less odd when geocaching in high muggle areas You can log your finds in the field - especially useful when on that FTF hunt, just to let others know ASAP that the FTF is no longer up for grabs. Mobile Phone Con’s You can protect your phone whilst out, but it comes at a cost (special protective cases etc) Unless you have a pair of mobile friendly gloves - or remember to take a stylus out with you - phones don’t tend to be glove friendly. Geocaching tends to suck up the battery juice on a mobile. You can get chargers for out in the field - but these come at a cost If you’re relying on that data connection, rather than loading for offline use, then you may hit issues when in a poor reception area.
