Many years ago, I fielded a survey focused on the culture of cybersecurity. One of the questions asked what initially drew folks to cybersecurity as a career. The most common response was a deep sense of curiosity. Throughout my career, I noticed another major factor in folks that brought a lot of value to security teams: diversity. Diversity of people, diversity of background, and diversity of experience. I've seen auto mechanics, biologists, and finance experts bring the most interesting insights and forehead-slapping observations to the table. I think part of the reason diversity is so necessary is that security itself is incredibly broad. It covers everything that technology, processes, and people touch. As such, cybersecurity workers need to have a similarly broad skillsets and background. Today, we talk to someone that embodies both this non-typical cybersecurity background and sense of curiosity - Clea Ostendorf. We'll discuss: The importance for organizations to actively seek and welcome curious newcomers in the security field who may not conform to traditional cybersecurity norms. Strategies for organizations to foster an environment that encourages individuals with curiosity, motivation, and a willingness to challenge conventional norms, thereby promoting innovative thinking in addressing security risks.

If you've been feeling burnout and overwhelmed by how to market your business or podcast on social media, you're going to love this episode. What's in this episode: [03:55] Why content creation can feel so difficult for online business owners [05:07] How taking an “outside” perspective can make the content creation process easier [10:19] Why focusing on the message (not reach, downloads, or other “numbers”) is how Gracia reaches –and then books– clients [14:06] Gracia's favorite types of content for creating connection with her audience [22:01] Gracia's definition for educational content and her three stages for the education-to-sales process [26:52] Why you're providing a service by using your content to educate your audience about the solutions your business can offer [31:16] Why you need to start posting right now, so you can learn, grow, and become more confident and adjust along the way For full show notes and a transcript of today's episode, head to wildhomepodcasting.com/podcast/099 For more podcast tips and inspirations, join my CLOSE FRIENDS list on instagram. Jennie Ostendorf refers to herself as a millennial orphan after recently losing her mother and father to suicide. She's also a friend, a sister to a Buddhist monk, a future therapist, a present therapy client advocating for mental health, and so much more. Born and raised in Los Angeles to two native Angelenos, her childhood was idyllic as she grew up by the beach, surrounded by a loving family, and a successful entrepreneur mother as a role model. Jennie had a brief love affair with New York while attending Barnard College at Columbia University where she studied economics, dance, and leadership. After graduation, sunshine and family called her home to California where she began her career in entertainment, media, and marketing. Most recently, Jennie led community and partnerships for the consumer health and biotech start-up Seed Health. Shifting gears and finding purpose after losing both of her parents to mental illness, Jennie is now pursuing a Master's in Social Work at USC in the Adult Mental Health and Wellness department. She looks forward to continuing to advocate for mental health and bringing therapy practices to areas where mental health is often neglected. She champions the idea that mental health is health and that humanity depends on it being treated as such. Jennie is deeply passionate about cultivating community and takes pride in her ability to connect people, places, and things with thoughtful care. She loves her family, big friendships, yoga, spending time in nature, pollinator spotting, neighborhood walks, breathing in the ocean air, pizza nights with friends, musical theater, the radio program This American Life, and watching all genres of television (but is especially into reality at the moment). Jennie is dealing with the grief and loss of her parents by not being afraid to ask for help, to cry in public, and to turn to her community for support whenever she needs it. She is an incredible example of vulnerability mixed with strength to get through even the hardest of times by putting one foot in front of the other, being self-aware, and giving back.

Growing up outside of Cologne, Anika Ostendorf had lofty but headstrong ambitions to get into the world of music. She ended up there, but not in the way her younger self may have initially expected. As Hachiku, Ostendorf has forged a career in the indie pop world that has seen her charming, kitschy indie-pop win over audiences on both a local and international scale - as well as tours alongside the likes of Courtney Barnett, The Breeders and Jose Gonzalez. Before a headlining show at Petersham Bowling Club, she discussed the ins and outs of the Ford family band, sleeping in your car on tour and why her dad still has 800 copies of her first CD. Hachiku's debut album I'll Probably Be Asleep is out now. Stream, download and buy it here: https://hachikumusic.bandcamp.com/album/ill-probably-be-asleep For the curious, Anika's first release as Ani Petite is available here: https://anipetite.bandcamp.com/album/demo Special thanks to Anika Ostendorf, Marcelle Bradbeer, Milk! A recent study conducted by The Whitman Insight Strategies Initiative and Creative Circle Media Solutions takes a deep dive into how a global pandemic has affected the actual feelings and emotions of local media consumers. One of the key takeaways revealed from "The Covid-19 Societal Impact Study" is that even though half of those polled say that they lack confidence in news media, those perceptions do not extend to local community media, where those same viewers and readers state they have a much higher trust. Moreover, when asked where they go for essential information about COVID-19, local news scored much higher than cable news and social media channels. In this segment of "E&P Reports," Editor and Publisher's Mike Blinder goes one-on-one with Ostendorf to talk about the study and what local news media can do to serve our audience better.

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.06.29.177857v1?rss=1 Authors: Privman Champaloux, E., Donelson, N., Pyakurel, P., Wolin, D., Ostendorf, L., Denno, M., Borman, R., Burke, C., Short-Miller, J. C., Yoder, M. R., Copeland, J. M., Sanyal, S., Venton, B. J. Abstract: Recent work indicates a role for RING finger protein 11 (RNF11) in Parkinson disease (PD) pathology, which involves the loss of dopaminergic neurons. However, the role of RNF11 in regulating dopamine neurotransmission has not been studied. In this work, we tested the effect of RNF11 RNAi knockdown or overexpression on stimulated dopamine release in the larval Drosophila central nervous system. Dopamine release was stimulated using optogenetics and monitored in real-time using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry at an electrode implanted in an isolated ventral nerve cord. RNF11 knockdown doubled dopamine release, but there was no decrease in dopamine from RNF11 overexpression. RNF11 knockdown did not significantly increase stimulated serotonin or octopamine release, indicating the effect is dopamine specific. Dopamine clearance was also changed, as RNF11 RNAi flies had a higher Vmax and RNF11 overexpressing flies had a lower Vmax than control flies. RNF11 RNAi flies had increased mRNA levels of dopamine transporter (DAT) in RNF11, confirming changes in DAT. In RNF11 RNAi flies, release was maintained better for stimulations repeated at short intervals, indicating increases in the recycled releasable pool of dopamine. Nisoxetine, a DAT inhibitor, and flupenthixol, a D2 antagonist, did not affect RNF11 RNAi or overexpressing flies differently than control. Thus, RNF11 knockdown causes early changes in dopamine neurotransmission, and this is the first work to demonstrate that RNF11 affects both dopamine release and uptake. RNF11 expression decreases in human dopaminergic neurons during PD, and that decrease may be protective by increasing dopamine neurotransmission in the surviving dopaminergic neurons.
