I think we need to be screaming this from the rooftops that when we're trying to be a good mom, it actually leads to bad mental health and that there isn't this spot where we're like, okay, check, we're a great mom now. We're going to drop the ball and we're going to make mistakes. And what it means for us as individuals to feel like we're doing enough and being enough is so personalized. In this book, Nancy presents so much science-backed advice when it comes to parenting; in today's episode we talk about whether she sees parenting as an art, a science, or a little bit of both; so-called “mom guilt” and why it's so pervasive; why “the good mother myth” is wrong, but seductive nonetheless; how suffocating expectations put on mothers can be, and how it makes mothers feel like they're not good enough (which is a fallacy); how so many ideas of motherhood are antiquated and no longer serve us; and so much more. Thankfully, this was not the experience for poets Nancy O'Reddy and Emily Pérez. They shared in a panel conversation at a writing conference, then took all of the energy and support they received and channeled it into being co-editors of a new and inspiring collection of writing in and around motherhood called “The Long Devotion: Poets Writing Motherhood.” “It seemed important at that point to present views on motherhood that would be like all three of those things - difficulty, ambivalence, and joy - because I think both of us, at that point in our writing and mothering journey, didn't feel like we saw the real complexity of mothering and trying to write while mothering represented in the work that we saw, or maybe we did see that work and we wanted to find a way to gather it together and to talk about it.” ~ Nancy O'Reddy Emily is the author of What Flies Want, winner of the Iowa Prize; House of Sugar, House of Stone; and two chapbooks. Alyssa May Gold recently made her Broadway debut alongside Mary-Louise Parker and David Morse in the long-anticipated Broadway premiere of How I Learned To Drive. She was previously seen in WP Theater/Second Stage's acclaimed world premiere of Our Dear Dead Drug Lord, and other New York credits include Arcadia (Broadway), Juliet + Romeo, Julius Caesar, The Maid's Tragedy (Pocket Universe), Middle of the Night, Lemon Sky (Keen Company), and Brilliant Traces (Art of Warr). Alyssa's Film and TV credits include “Rebel in the Rye,” “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood,” “Taking Woodstock,”and “Law &Order: SVU.” She is also the founder of Pocket Universe, a theater/film production company dedicated to reconsidering and re-imagining classic stories and conventions.  Upon being asked how she first became involved in theater, Alyssa recalls seeing the Annie movie when she was four years old, and says she hasn't stopped since. She talks about the inspiration and creation of her production company, Pocket Universe, revealing the meaning behind its title and how it relates to string theory. Others can read the ingredients on a chewing gum wrapper and unlock the secrets of the universe.” Yeah, no, this isn’t going to be that deep. “It's kryptonite, Superman. A little piece of the rock you were born on. I've spared no expense to make you feel right at home.” If you want to make me feel at home, make me a pie, preferably rhubarb. “To us, they're just meteorites. Fair enough. But the level of specific radioactivity is so high, to anyone from the planet Krypton, this substance is lethal!” If this stuff were real, you know there would be people wearing all the different colors of the stuff as their bling, just to show off how much money they have. Though in the Byrne era, we only had to worry about the green kind. Green is such a lovely color. Always makes me think of Mountain Dew, or Christmas and sometimes anti-freeze. But that is not the point. The point is that 3rd Degree Byrne is covering Superman #22 in this latest world hopping episode.
