Die Folgen "The Police" und "Sting (I)" findet Ihr u. a. in der ARD Audiothek. Even if you don't know his name, there can hardly be a human alive who hasn't heard at least half a dozen songs by Max Martin, who's done more to shape today's pop music landscape than almost anyone else. He's launched the careers of legends, and been the go-to guy for anybody whose career needed a surefire hit. Born in Stockholm, he learnt the skills of the trade under Denniz Pop, one of the most successful songwriters and producers of the ‘90s, and quickly became his own pop powerhouse. He's achieved success beyond anyone's wildest dreams, with, to date, 25 number ones on the US Billboard charts. In 2016, he was awarded the prestigious Polar Music Prize by the King of Sweden himself. And now there's even a jukebox musical, & Juliet, featuring some of his most beloved songs. If you're still not sure who he is, how about a roll call of some of the talent he's worked with? There's Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Kelly Clarkson, Robyn, Backstreet Boys, Adele, The Weeknd, Taylor Swift, Coldplay, Lady Gaga… need we go on? So we couldn't have a Nordic music podcast without discussing this titan. We invited brilliant music journalist, Michael Cragg, who is also the founder of Maxopedia, the one-stop shop for all things Max Martin, to join us on the podcast and share his thoughts on the Swede and his greatest achievements, those Max Martin tracks that you didn't even know were Max Martin tracks, and his take on what the future holds. Don't forget to check out our Max Martin Playlist at https://www.melodyam.com/max where we took on the painstaking task of whittling down his hits for your delectation.
BlackFacts.com presents the black fact of the day for May 13.Stevie Wonder was born.He is an American singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, a child prodigy who developed into one of the most creative musical figures of the late 20th century.Blind from birth and raised in inner-city Detroit, he was a skilled musician by age eight and made his recording debut at age 12.Although still only in his mid-20s, Wonder appeared to have mastered virtually every idiom of African-American popular music and to have synthesized them all into a language of his own.The best of his work formed a vital link between the classic rhythm-and-blues and soul performers of the 1950s and '60s and their less commercially constrained successors. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and in 1999 he was awarded the Polar Music Prize for lifetime achievement by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music. In 2005 he received a Grammy Award for lifetime achievement. Four years later he was awarded the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2014.Learn black history, teach black history at blackfacts.com

Heidi and Ellen welcome Gemini. Geminis are the communicators and connectors as the sign is ruled by Mercury and Venus. This Gemini season has a long mercury retrograde and a few eclipses to keep us all on our toes. During this month, the pace picks up. Our desire to connect intensifies. Our need to converse is at an all time high. Gemini wants to feel enlivened by sharing experiences, ideas and little adventures. In true Gemini fashion, Heidi and Ellen talk about Patti Smith, Bob Dylan, the Polar Music Prize and dancing. And Heidi reads the beautiful poem 'The Cord' by Leanne O'Sullivan.

On episode 130 of The Quarantine Tapes, Paul Holdengräber is joined by acclaimed jazz musician Sonny Rollins. Sonny and Paul talk about the importance of always continuing to learn. Sonny tells stories from his early days as a musician, from first meeting his influences like Coleman Hawkins and Thelonious Monk to the hours he spent playing music on the Williamsburg Bridge.Sonny says that bravery and freedom have always been inherent elements of jazz that differentiate it from other genres of music. He tells Paul about the spiritual nature of improvisation and how music affects him today in a fascinating conversation that draws from Sonny’s decades playing music and learning. Walter Theodore Rollins was born in Harlem, New York on September 7, 1930, of parents native to the Virgin Islands. His older brother Valdemar and sister Gloria were also musically inclined but only Sonny veered away from classical music after his uncle, a professional saxophonist, introduced him to jazz and blues. He gravitated to the tenor saxophone in high school, inspired in particular by Coleman Hawkins. By the time he was out of school, Rollins was already working with cutting edge modernists such as Bud Powell, Fats Navarro, and Roy Haynes. In 1951 he debuted as a leader on Prestige; his affiliation with that label also produced classics such as Saxophone Colossus, Worktime, and Tenor Madness (with John Coltrane).Rollins won his first performance Grammy for This Is What I Do (2000), and his second for 2005’s Without a Song (The 9/11 Concert), in the Best Jazz Instrumental Solo category (for “Why Was I Born”). Sonny, Please was nominated for a best jazz album Grammy in 2006. In addition, Sonny received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in 2004. In June 2006 Rollins was inducted into the Academy of Achievement at the International Achievement Summit in Los Angeles. In May 2007 was a recipient of the Polar Music Prize, presented in Stockholm, and in 2009 he became the third American (after Frank Sinatra and Jessye Norman) to be awarded the Austrian Cross for Science and Art, First Class. Which isn’t to say that Rollins isn’t equally honored at home. In 2011 President Barack Obama presented him with the Medal of Arts at the White House, and the following year Rollins was named a Kennedy Center Honoree.Rollins’s latest album is “Rollins in Holland: The 1967 Studio & Live Recordings” (Resonance Records).

When Ann Linde read her first foreign policy declaration in parliament, crime and the EU were high on the agenda, while her predecessor's signature area a feminist foreign policy only got a brief mention. Also in politics, Sweden Democrat front figure, migration policy spokesperson Paula Bieler, has resigned as MP and is leaving politics to focus on family, studies and getting a "regular job", but she tells Radio Sweden that she has not ruled out the possibility of taking over as party leader in the future. In Gothenburg, the acquittal of a former Social Democrat mayor accused of slander has stirred up a heated debate. Was the verdict a victory for democracy and free speech or a justification for politicians' abuse of power?

On today's episode I talk to violinist David Harrington. Originally from Seattle, David is the founder of the renowned contemporary classical group Kronos Quartet. The group was established in 1973, and since then, Kronos has become one of the most celebrated and influential groups of our time, performing thousands of concerts worldwide, releasing more than 50 recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity, collaborating with many of the world's most intriguing and accomplished composers and performers - which include people like Terry Riley and Steve Reich - and commissioning more than 850 works and arrangements for string quartet. In 2011, Kronos became the only recipients of both the Polar Music Prize and the Avery Fisher Prize, two of the most prestigious awards given to musicians. The group's numerous awards also include a Grammy for Best Chamber Music Performance in 2004. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
