PRESS REVIEW – Wednesday, March 26: International papers react to the Black Sea security deal reached by Ukraine and Russia that was brokered by the US. Elsewhere, European papers react to the Signal group chat leak with outrage. Also, Palestinians participate in the largest anti-Hamas protest since October 2023. Finally, two otters are on the loose in Wisconsin after escaping the local zoo. The international papers are discussing the news of a tentative Black Sea ceasefire reached in Saudi Arabia. The Saudi paper Arab News headlines with: "US says it brokered deal to end fighting in the Black Sea in talks with Ukraine and Russia". It says that although many details remain unresolved, the agreement could present a path to a wider ceasefire. The Ukrainian press says that the deal "is not what Ukraine needs" and adds that the ceasefire favours Russia more than it does Ukraine. The Kyiv Independent says that the deal misses out crucial securities that Ukraine needs, including the protection of its port infrastructure. In Russia, the newspaper Vedomosti says that what Russia wants is access to international markets for its agricultural products and fertilisers. It says that for that to happen, it needs access to ports and payment systems, which would mean that the US would have to put pressure on Europe. The European papers are also discussing the deal. The Belgian paper Le Soir says that Russia wants to renew a deal that it killed in the first place, referring to the Black Sea Grain Initiative that Moscow pulled out of in July 2023. The Guardian has an analysis piece with an evocative title: "Ukraine ceasefire deal looks like a Russian wishlist tied with a US bow”, highlighting that the Kremlin said it would only implement the Black Sea ceasefire once the US significantly rolls back its sanctions.European papers are also up in arms about the Signal group chat leak. The British tabloid the Daily Star asks if JD Vance is the most dangerous man in the world. In Germany, the paper FOCUS discusses a "real hatred of Europe" and accuses the Trump administration of using "mafia-worthy tactics". In Italy, the broadsheet La Repubblica features the story on its front page, headlining with a Vance quote calling Europe freeloaders or "parasitic". Libération, in France, takes a slightly different angle on its front page. According to a recent study, more than 60 percent of French consumers would support a boycott of American products, while a third of them try to actively avoid products associated with Donald Trump and Elon Musk's policies.Turning to the Middle East, Palestinians have taken to the streets for the largest anti-Hamas protests since October 2023. The New York Times describes the protests in the streets of Beit Lahia in northern Gaza. It says there were neutral signs against the war in general, but that there were also chants asking Hamas to "get out". The BBC reports that masked Hamas militants tried to disperse protesters, hurting several people in the process. It notes that open criticism of Hamas has grown in Gaza since the war began, but that it is hard to tell how much support for the group has changed since the start of the conflict. Finally, we all know otters for their cuteness, but the AP brings us the news that they are actually criminal masterminds! Louie and Ophelia, two otters at Wisconsin zoo, have escaped and are on the run. The zoo is on their tail: it has hired a tracker, installed motion detecting cameras and urged the public to share any information on the two fugitives. You can catch our press review every morning on FRANCE 24 at 7:20am and 9:20am (Paris time), from Monday to Friday.
The Russian government's new draft budget for 2025 through 2027 was introduced to the State Duma this week in its first reading. The state's proposed spending exceeds earlier predictions, with 41.5 trillion rubles (more than $435 billion) allocated for next year alone — and that may not be the final amount. A record share of the budget is classified as “secret” or “top secret” — nearly a third of all proposed expenditures. To discuss the draft budget, focusing on allocations to the military, The Naked Pravda welcomed back Alexandra Prokopenko, a fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center in Berlin, a former columnist for the business newspaper Vedomosti, and a former senior advisor at Russia's Central Bank. „Snažím sa byť otvorená a úprimná, a očakávam, že ten pacient bude taktiež otvorený a úprimný,” sú slová skúsenej reumatologičky Lenky Tarabčákovej. Spolu s Lenkou sme sa zahĺbili do krás a problematík reumatológie. „Drvivú väčšinu zápalových reumatických chorôb tvorí reumatoidná artritída, spondylartritídy, no a najzaujímavejšie a diagnosticky najobtiažnejšie sú systémové ochorenia spojiva.

Kto podľa výskumov nesie zodpovednosť a kto nie? Keby sme dostavali diaľnicu do Košíc, každých 633 metrov bude stredná škola. Počas štúdia si zarábal bežnými brigádami ako napríklad čašník, kuriér, doučovania... 9 rokov hral basketbal a postupne už bolo veľmi ťažké spojiť školu, prácu a tréningy. Má v teame ďalšie osoby, ktoré už takisto dosiahli 4 ciferný príjem, mohli dať výpoveď zo svojho zamestnania a zabezpečili seba a svoje rodiny. Jeho neustálym cieľom je rozširovať si svoj team o ďalších ambicióznych ľudí, ktorí chcú vo svojom živote viac a chcú zmenu zo svojej súčasnej situácie. Hours after the newspaper Vedomosti published an op-ed by imprisoned journalist Ivan Safronov, the page hosting his text suddenly became inaccessible. Not long thereafter, Vedomosti's entire website crashed. According to communications director Guzel Khairetdinova, the newspaper is under DDoS attack. She told Meduza that the attack is targeting Vedomosti's entire website, not just a single text. "The whole site is down and our technical team is doing everything it can to restore it," she explained. A year ago today, on July 7, 2020, agents from Russia's Federal Security Service arrested 30-year-old Ivan Safronov on charges of treason - punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Then serving as an advisor to the head of Russia's space agency, Safronov worked for many years prior as a journalist at the newspapers Kommersant and Vedomosti. Meduza reviews the developments in the case over the past 12 months and looks at how Safronov and his defense team have weathered a year of uncertainty.

Unplugged Performance Reveals 'Pikes Plaid'"On June 10, 2021, Elon Musk formally kicked off deliveries of the 1,020-hp Tesla Model S Plaid. Approximately two days later, on June 12, Unplugged Performance debuted its race-prepped Model S Plaid that's set to compete at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (with our resident pro racing driver, Randy Pobst, behind the wheel). " says Motor Trend: "The interior is almost completely stripped out. After ditching items such as the car's airbags, a center console, and door panels, Unplugged Performance fits this tri-motor Tesla with a roll cage and a racing seat with six-point racing belts. The body is stock except for a huge front splitter and a gigantic adjustable rear wing. Likewise, the Plaid racer retains its factory air springs, however, it employs custom Unplugged Performance/Bilstein dampers and a three-way adjustable rear anti-roll bar. The car rides on Yokohama Advan slicks on custom forged aluminum wheels." https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-model-s-plaid-pikes-peak-race/ ADL presents EV Bus For U.S."Alexander Dennis Limited (ADL), a subsidiary of NFI Group (NFI), unveiled its first all-electric three-axle double-deck bus for North America. Following trials with select transit operators, the vehicle is now launching on the broader North American markets." says electrive.com: "The 45-foot Enviro500EV CHARGE has a passenger capacity of up to 82 seats, including 53 on the upper deck. An electric portal axle with hub motors provides propulsion with 2×125kW peak power output. The battery capacity of the Enviro500EV Charge stands at 648 kWh of energy storage integrated “in the chassis and the rear of the vehicle for a low centre of gravity and great stability”. Charging can be done via industry-standard CCS1" https://www.electrive.com/2021/06/13/adl-presents-triple-axle-double-decker-bus-for-north-america/ BYD's electric school bus will feed electricity back to classrooms"Chinese EV automaker BYD officially introduced its new electric Type D school bus, available in the US in lengths of 10.6, 11.6, and 12 meters, and capable of carrying up to 84 passengers. Most notably, the school bus enables bi-directional charging. According to the company, the bus can be charged overnight when energy demand is low, and feed clean energy back to the school during school hours" says The Next Web: "The bus features a lithium iron phosphate battery and has a range of roughly 250 kilometers on a single charge. That's 57km more than the electric school buses of Blue Bird Corporation, one of the biggest industry players, can go. Although it's unclear when and where BYD's new ebuses will debut, the announcement comes in perfect sync with President Biden's EV infrastructure scheme" https://thenextweb.com/news/byds-electric-school-bus-feed-electricity-back-classrooms UK in talks with 6 firms to build gigafactories"Britain is in talks with six companies for building gigafactories to produce electric vehicle batteries, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday, citing people briefed on the discussions." reports Reuters today: "Ford Motor Co (F.N), Nissan Motor Co Ltd (7201.T), LG Corp (003550.KS), Samsung (005930.KS) and start-ups Britishvolt and InoBat Auto are in talks with the British government or local authorities about locations for potential factories and financial support, according to the report. He's been obsessed with cryptocurrencies, especially dogecoin" says CNN Business: "It makes no sense for Tesla to be essentially a one-man show while SpaceX has an extremely adept COO in Gwynne Shotwell, one of that company's first hires, who is capable of stepping in to lead if Musk were unable to do so. Why doesn't Musk have someone like Shotwell at Tesla? Tesla has suffered a bit of a brain drain over the past few years, with several high-profile executives leaving. Most recent, and most alarming to Tesla investors, is this week's departure of Jerome Guillen. The nearly 11-year Tesla veteran had been running the trucking division and previously served in many roles, including president of the automotive division and program director on Tesla's Model S sedan. David Whiston, an auto analyst at Morningstar, said in an email to CNN Business that the only executive left who might make sense as a Musk successor is Andrew "Drew" Baglino, Tesla's senior vice president of powertrain and energy engineering, who has been with the company since 2006." QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS RAJEEV NARAYANMy Volt makes a strange ethereal moaning sound at low speed, that I am not a fan of.. That being said I understand that regulations mandating these low speed sounds are increasing. It would be interesting if these could be changed, downloaded, or even self made like ringtones today. Perhaps you could even decide which one gets played based on GPS location. As for sounds at higher speeds- I am not a fan of that, one of the things I enjoy about my EV is the quiet ride, thst being said I can see a similar market for customizable / downloaded high-speed sounds- “Ferrari” or “spaceship” may be interesting. LIAM FROM OHIOI am not an EV owner but, I think car manufacturers should just put a microphone under the hood of their EVs,✝ and pump the motor sounds through the interior (and exterior) speakers. (Of course with adjustable volume.) I love the sound of motor whine! Have you heard how cool the EV1 sounded even without fake motor sounds?* Regarding my opinion fake motor sounds, Porsche, Audi, and Jaguar have nailed it in my opinion! Although, I don't really care for the fake sounds that the e-Golf and Mach-E make when accelerating, as they sound too much like combustion engine sounds. JAMES COYLEI have to agree the Zoe Pedestrian noise, is really is annoying BUT it does come in really useful when driving in busy town areas with lots of people walking around, HOWEVER the button to turn it on/off is in a really awkward place, and you cant turn it on, for instance when reversing, only off. EG: if there was a button to turn it on, on the steering wheel you could click it on and off at will, I'm most cautious when silently reversing slowly out of a super market car parking space, you cant turn it on, it refuses to make any noise whilst reversing, when its at its most quiet. IAN HARRISON FROM HULL•I am a blind enthusiast of electric vehicles but do worry about not being able to use yet another of my senses while out and about. So few drivers fail to recognise the significance of a white cane or guide dog compared with years ago that crossing uncontrolled roads is always a gamble anyway. Perhaps cars could be taught to notice the cane or the profile of a guide dog and its owner, then perform a beep whether or not your system is switched on. •Silent cars when combined with this fad for shared spaces is a double whammy for both the blind and even parents and small children. •Can I give a shout out to Motability UK who provide leased vehicles to the disabled. They are slowly increasing their range of EVs, including the ID3. I can't wait to get my wife an electric vehicle next time around. STEPHEN HARRISSo far as EV sounds are concerned, they should be silent. However, having the option to change the sound of the horn or have two different buttons for the horn, so that the driver can give an appropriate warning for the circumstance would be ideal. The usual horn sound can scare the daylights out of unsuspecting pedestrians and I think many sensible drivers are hesitant to use it for that reason, whereas a sound like a bike bell would be enough to get them to turn in the direction of the vehicle and see what is happening. A bike bell is pretty universally recognised warning to get out of the way.s (PEVs). They would be an ideal first and last mile solution and indeed are plenty capable enough to make the whole journey in many instances. MARK ORRICONo artificial noises please. Inside or out. There are some nearly silent piston cars out there. It's on the driver and pedestrians to avoid being run over and running people over. When I got my Niro in February I had it 2 days with the reverse beeping and pulled the front bumper off to disconnect the speaker…..my first new car ever and day 2 I'm pulling the thing apart, I got an ev partly for a quieter vehicle not one that was going to wake all my neighbors up when I back out of the garage. ALUN MORGANTo me it's very clear, there should be no rules about EV noise at all. Regulations should be technology agnostic: Minimum external noise limits should exist for all vehicles at low speed. I think the current AVAS regs allowing quite a lot of freedom under an “engine like noise” are a good way to go. Equally: Maximum external noise should be regulated, there are standards for drive by noise, but regulations on maximum noise at low speeds are probably a good idea now that a lot of cars simply have a speaker under the hood that could easily be abused. As for internal noise - go for broke, I don't care if you want your EV to sound like a V12, or your V12 to sound like an EV (good luck with that). The market will provide/decide. I suspect as EVs become ubiquitous, playing faux engine noises from your audio system will turn out to be a fad.

London, 30th August- in our second episode of Trouble with the Truth, Lana Estemirova interviews Anna Nemtsova, a Moscow-based journalist for the Daily Beast. They discuss the case of Ivan Safronov, a former journalist who was arrested and charged with treason in what appears to be a politically motivated move. A correspondent for Kommersant and Vedomosti newspapers and military reporter in the past, Ivan had been working for the Russian Space agency when he was arrested and charged. His friends and colleagues are convinced that his arrest is politically motivated. Ivan has published exclusive exposes on sensitive military topics and has been threatened on multiple occasions for his work. His father, also a journalist and columnist who covered military affairs for the daily newspaper Kommersant, died after falling from the fifth floor of his Moscow apartment building in 2007. The conversation also touches upon the rising trend of treason charges, the important role of investigative journalism and the difficulties of being an independent journalist in Putin's Russia.

Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enIn the past several weeks, Meduza has written extensively about the newsroom controversy at Vedomosti, one of Russia's top business newspapers. Most recently, Meduza published a joint investigation with a handful of other independent news outlets (including Vedomosti itself) about the backroom wheeling and dealing that's guided the outlet's ownership for the past five years. In this episode of “The Naked Pravda,” host Kevin Rothrock reviews what we know about developments at Vedomosti and speaks to Financial Times Moscow correspondent Max Seddon about the story and business journalism in Russia more broadly. Listen to the end and you'll be treated to an anecdote about how reporters rekindled the bromance between President Vladimir Putin and action film star Steven Seagal. “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Fridays. Podcast: The Week Ahead In Russia - Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty
The venerable Russian newspaper Vedomosti is under threat, and media outlets are facing pressure as the coronavirus makes for a great deal of bad news, compounding the difficulties for independent journalists and publications in Russia.
Save Meduza!https://support.meduza.io/enIn late March 2020, after the owners of the newspaper Vedomosti confirmed that they'd reached a preliminary agreement to sell off the publication, deputy editors appealed to the paper's new owners in a letter where they warned that the newsroom is in chaos, advertisers are in shock, and subscribers are demanding refunds for paid subscriptions. The letter's authors argue that the only remedy is to appoint a new chief editor from among the newsroom's own ranks. The crisis follows the decision by Vedomosti's new owners to install a new editor-in-chief named Andrey Shmarov, who promptly alienated the staff in a bawdy introduction where he touted his ignorance about Vedomosti's own code of ethics, professed not to read the newspaper itself, and then defended Harvey Weinstein and expressed skepticism about the very concept of sexual harassment. To understand the significance of the trouble at Vedomosti, “The Naked Pravda” turned to Vedomosti editor-at-large Maxim Trudolyubov, who helped launched the publication more than 20 years ago. “The Naked Pravda” comes out on Fridays.

Prečo potrebujeme budovať informačnú architektúru a pyramídy poznania?
