Episode Summary: In last week's episode, we explored why so many of us are distancing from family as part of our spiritual growth. But today, we're going even deeper. Just because you've physically or emotionally distanced yourself from family doesn't mean the work is done. Generational energy, family secrets, and patterns we inherit through the bloodline often stay with us until they're consciously cleared. In this episode, we discuss how this hidden energy flows, why it shows up even when we think we've moved on, and how clearing the bloodline can free future generations from repeating the same patterns. Using an example from the TV series Defending Jacob, we'll dive into how unhealed family trauma can affect us unconsciously—and how we can take back control. What You'll Learn in This Episode: Why distancing yourself from family doesn't mean you've broken the cycle. What generational energy or “family curses” really are and how they show up in your life. The importance of addressing hidden family secrets and trauma. How the TV series Defending Jacob illustrates how unhealed family energy flows through generations. Tools and techniques to begin clearing generational energy for yourself and future generations. Timestamps: [00:00] - Intro: Why this topic goes beyond physical distance from family. [05:00] - What is generational energy or a family curse?: The cycles we inherit. [12:00] - Defending Jacob case study: How hidden family trauma can manifest. [20:00] - Signs you're carrying family energy: Emotional triggers, patterns, and dreams. [28:00] - How to begin clearing generational patterns: Awareness, forgiveness, and energetic detachment. [35:00] - Why healing the bloodline matters: How it benefits future generations. Key Quotes: “Family energy doesn't disappear just because you do. It flows until someone chooses to heal it.” “The weight you're carrying may not be your burden—it may be generations of unresolved pain asking for release.” “Healing the bloodline is the gift you give to those who come after you. It's how cycles end and freedom begins.” Resources Mentioned: The Art of Process: 7 Secrets to Overcoming Adversity and Cultivating New Age Prosperity (Shelby's book) Expanding Consciousness Fundamentals course Understanding Your Energy Centers Course Call to Action: If you enjoyed today's episode, make sure to subscribe to ShelbyRADIO so you don't miss future episodes on spiritual awakening and energetic growth. She is a Certified Diversity Professional, certified in Emotional and Social Intelligence and DiSC, and is also the author of three books. She's the author of The Art of Active Listening: How People at Work Feel Heard, Valued, and Understood*. When you know how to listen, people will share more. We may or may not always be able to resolve every concern, but we can be sure others are heard. In this conversation, Heather and I discuss how we can shift from listening for what we want to hear towards listening for what we need to learn. Key Points Some issues can only be resolved through better listening. That alone makes this a critical skill for leaders. When you know how to listen, people will bring things to you. Listen for not what you want to hear but what you want to learn. Listening is not just about what's been said, but also about what is seen. Get beyond simply, “What I hear you saying is…” Some leaders have a fear about the direction that a response might take a conversation. Remember that often people first and foremost want to be heard, regardless of what happens next. Nobody is ready to listen at every moment. Taking time to center yourself for a conversation in a few minutes or later in the day can be helpful for both parties. In my life, I've experienced deeper levels of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder), however, I've found ways to embrace these slower months and cultivate cozy. There's a concept that comes from the Danish culture called Hygge. It's defined as “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).” In this episode, I'm sharing some of the tips I've used over the years to help cultivate cozy and get through the dark, sunless winter months. Is it possible to always be in a state of flow? In this episode, Adam Hill explores whether it's realistic to expect being in a constant state of flow or if there are natural cycles involved. He shares insights from flow researcher Steven Kotler on the four stages of the "flow cycle" - struggle, relaxation, flow, and recovery. Listen in to understand how knowledge of this cycle can aid you in experiencing flow more often. If you're on the hunt for techniques to amplify your focus and performance, this enlightening episode is worth a listen! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Can you be in a constant state of flow? Flow and its four stages in achieving peak performance The importance of following a cycle Embracing struggle for growth and improvement Entering flow state for productivity and creativity Harnessing the power of the flow cycle: struggle, relaxation, flow, and recovery Episode Highlights: [05:37] Can You Be in a Constant State of Flow? You cannot be in a constant state of flow. While it would be ideal to always be performing at our best, the science shows there are natural cycles involved in achieving a state of flow. Adam discusses research by Steven Kotler that identifies four stages in the "flow cycle": struggle, relaxation, flow, and recovery. To consistently experience flow requires understanding these stages and how to optimize the different phases. Fighting to stay in flow at all times sets oneself up for failure, as the natural ebbs and flows cannot be avoided. [13:42] Embracing Struggle for Growth and Improvement The initial stages or the struggle phase of any goal or activity is invariably challenging but crucial to overcome. This struggle pushes us beyond our comfort zone, propelling personal growth and necessitating an acceptance of discomfort. It's through this struggle that we develop the resistance needed for improvement, much like how lifting weights builds muscle. Instead of shying away from it, embracing struggle means navigating through discomfort, viewing it as an opportunity for growth rather than a fear-inducing obstacle. It is important to remember that without this struggle, we cannot progress to the subsequent stages of relaxation, flow, and recovery that are vital for sustained improvement over time, as dictated by the flow cycle. [26:19] Harnessing the Power of Flow: The Cycle of Struggle, Relaxation, and Recovery The key to staying in the zone or the flow state is to commence your rest when you're at your peak. This involves setting a timeline, allowing you to enjoy the flow, but also knowing when to stop and take a breather even when you're still immersed in that state. By doing this, you'll find that the next time you return to the task, you'll easily reconnect with the initial struggle, step back, and then dive right back into the flow. Understanding this cycle of struggle, relaxation, flow, and recovery will help you recognize the phase you're in and guide yourself through each stage more effectively. This understanding will enhance your chances of experiencing the flow instead of constantly battling it. Remember, fighting and flow are polar opposites; you can't muscle your way into a state of flow. The initial phase is struggle, not flow; it's followed by relaxation, a stepping back from the task. On your return, you re-engage, flowing with focus. The recovery phase kicks in when you're at your best, prompting you to rest and recover. This recovery phase tends to be the longest as it's the stage where most adaptations occur. For some of us, deciding when to address unresolved issues with our family of origin can be confusing. Many people choose not to directly address issues so as to not stir the pot. Other people go as far as doing family therapy as adults with their aging parents and other family members. For us, we find it helpful to get clear about the purpose or what we want to accomplish with our family members to help us decide which topics to address and which to leave as water under the bridge, so to speak. When navigating the relational terrain with family of origin members, there's often many more complex layers to consider than other types of relationships. In this episode, we explore differences in generations when it comes to interpersonal skills, family cultures, even what we are “up to” in our relationships in general. We share how we navigate challenging conversations with our own families. We also provide tips for finding success in these types of conversations — including awareness of contrasting versions of reality, impact versus intent, and getting clear about a desired outcome for the relationship, prior to initiating the conversation. “We can do more than I can” is also an invitation to connect with our families — in support of the relationships we are committed to both learn and heal from. If you come to any new insights about your family's culture, we'd love to hear from you. Share them with us at kristavanderveer.com. What does ‘playing big’ mean to you? What does it look like? Feel like? Sound like? How do you go from playing small to playing a bigger game and achieving your wildest dreams? As entrepreneurs and high-performing leaders, stepping into our power and embracing our inner bigness is often one of the most challenging and scary experiences we face when advancing to our next level of greatness. But embracing and embodying our bigness is the key to unlocking our rebel souls. It’s the energetic foundation for creating the massive impact we want to create in the world. In today’s episode, I dive deeper into my career backstory and why I felt unfulfilled in my corporate career, despite achieving massive success and recognition. I discuss why taking risks, trying new things, and staying true to yourself is important for many rebel souls. I discuss the importance of identifying your personal and professional insecurities, how they manifest in your life, and how they are impacting your career trajectory. I share my struggles with being a natural rebel while also having people-pleasing tendencies and how being a perpetual people-pleaser can actually hinder your ability to play big. I also share how I realized it’s beautiful to be a force of nature, that being in touch with my feminine side is nature, and how embracing that natural beauty is how female leaders play big and get things done. “Let’s rebel together for our bigness! This is how we are going to be the ripples that become the wave.” - Shelley Paxton This week on Rebel Souls: Why I felt unfulfilled in my corporate career, despite achieving massive success Why I struggled to play a bigger game on the corporate field Identifying your insecurities and how they’re impacting your career Getting clear about your people-pleasing tendencies and how it hinders your ability to play at a bigger level Getting in touch with your “Divine Self” Embracing heart-centered leadership, compassion, and empathy The value of embracing your feminine side to play big and get things done Resources Mentioned: The Art of Spiritual Intimacy Workshop Bigness I was always too big for you. Yes, you. Every man in my life. Every husband, boyfriend, and potential suitor. Too intense. Too successful. Too curvy. Too fat. Too bold. Too smart. Too independent. Too charismatic. Too much. Too much like the wild swells of the ocean, like the raging winds of a monsoon, like the scorching rays of the desert sun. You told me I was a force of nature. Too big. In every way. And I believed you. I felt crushed and ashamed and misunderstood...and unlovable. Alone. Aching. Too big for love. Until now. Now I understand that big is beautiful. That the vast expansiveness of the divine feminine is powerful. The movement, the energy, the beauty, the expression, the emotion, the leadership. The force that nature intended. Now I choose to show up as “She who must be loved in her bigness and ravished in her wild feminine.” Look out world. Brown, Episode 128 “The mantra is for you and your employees; it’s a guideline for what everyone does in their jobs, but a tagline is for your customers - it’s a guideline for how to use your product or service. For example, Nike’s mantra is, ‘Authentic athletic performance,’ but it’s tagline is, ‘Just do it.’” - Guy Kawasaki, The Art of the Start: The Time-Tested, Battle-Hardened Guide for Anyone Starting Anything, Episode 128 “Show up and show out.” - Kevin Y. Brown, Episode 128 “I had to literally innovate and create right there. And that’s what preparation is about. It’s being prepared for whatever can come about and making sure that you’re ready.” - Kevin Y. Brown, Episode 128 “If you do those things.. you set the goal, meet the goal, do the work, then you will be able to create your life, because you are essentially working towards the things that you want to.” - Kevin Y. Brown, Episode 128 “You can request a mentor. But you have to earn a sponsor.” - Donald Comer, Episode 128 “Good work, you have to go sell yourself. Great work, other people talk about it.” - Chris Winton, Episode 128 “Earning a mentor who is in reality a sponsor is the greatest success that an individual can have in terms of moving their career forward.” - Donald Comer, Episode 128 "Set the goal, meet the goal, do the work." - Kevin Y. Metaphorically speaking, winter is a season of work. It’s a time when there’s not a lot of growth and things may look bleak. We don’t know all the reasons why we have a winter, but we know that there’s an ebb and flow to life. I hope this episode will inspire you to hold on when you go through a winter and remind you that spring is just around the corner. 6 Key Takeaways Winter is inevitable. Instead of trying to fight against it, we should ride that and know that it’s a part of life. Failure is just discovering how not to do something so you will eventually learn how to do it. Part of preparing for winter is in mindset. To survive a winter, you must be aware and accept that it is a natural part of life. Simply accepting where you are and what is powerful because it puts you in a position of saying that all is well. You are not your thoughts. They are separate from who you are. Your feelings come from your thoughts. If we’re not our thoughts and our feelings and emotions come from our thoughts, then we can use that awareness to distance ourselves and not be ruled by our emotions and feelings. The worst time to make a decision is when you’re highly emotional about something whether you’re experiencing an emotional high or low. The tendency of the mind is to think that the way it is now is the way it is always going to be. But we know that all of life is continually shifting. When things look bleak, know that it is a temporary state. Spring always follows winter. Quotes “A level head is better for decision-making than swings, whether it’s high ups or low downs.” “Hold on whether it’s a short winter, a mild winter, a long winter. Hold and just know that spring is around the corner.” Action Step When you go through the winter, get into the place of level-headedness, a state of acceptance of what is. From there, you will have the power to create what comes next. Acknowledge that winters in every area of life are a natural part of life. Thank you for listening!
