Letters From Rifka by Karen Hesse is told entirely in letter format, so here we go: Dear Reader, The year is 1919 in the month of September when Rifka (age 12) and her family make their escape from Russia. Sadly, the trip to America was eventful. In Poland, Rifka and her family got typhus except for her ornery brother Saul. After the family recovered their journey continued. Rifka befriends a Russian peasant on the train by fixing her hair. The vivid description of the peasant's scalp by the author is graphic so when Rifka is diagnosed with ringworm, there is no doubt where she caught it. Her long golden curls fall out. But there is something worse than losing her curls, losing her family. Her family must continue the journey to America where jobs await them. What will become of Rifka, astute readers ask? How does she survive? Fortunately, the country of Belgium opens its arms to immigrants. “That is what you are when you are wandering between two worlds.” Rifka is left with mama's locket and papa's prayer shawl. A kind Sister treats her ringworm everyday. She receives hospitality from a generous couple who share their home with her for about a year until her condition is completely healed. Finally, she is on to America! After waiting for a year, imagine her dismay when the Americans refuse to let her in because she is bald. During her journey, Rifka has been writing her cousin on the white spaces found around the poems in the Pushkin poetry book Tovah gifted her when her family left Russia. Rifka has the gift of language but better than knowing different languages is her gift of compassion for the hurting. The orphan baby with typhus becomes her mission as does the 7 year old Russian peasant boy that will not talk or eat. Can she help them? Will she be reunited with her family? “Suddenly I realize how defenseless we are —not just Jews, all of us…I realize how precious our lives are. And how brief.” May you join Rifka on her journey and see her wonderful example of taking life one day at a time and blooming where one is planted! Sarah speaks with Annette Libeskind Berkovits about her historical fiction novel, The Corset Maker: "A Parisian Count, a Moroccan arms smuggler, and an orphaned Spanish boy test the convictions and tug at the heart of Rifka Berg, a young Jewish corsetiere from Warsaw. The Corset Maker follows the enthralling life of Rifka Berg leading up to, during, and after WWII. Born into a pious Orthodox family, Rifka yearns to read forbidden literature and to explore the world beyond the confines of her small community. Her wishes come true, albeit harrowingly, when the tumultuous events of the 20th century take her on a journey for survival. Faced with life and death situations, Rifka must take immense risks. What decisions will she make? Or will circumstances choose for her? The Corset Maker is written in honor of the author's mother and her close friends, all women of immense courage and integrity. Rifka's personal struggles and dilemmas go to the heart of the major ethical issues and challenges of our times." I am not a doctor of any kind but it helps to spread awareness and push the safety of washing of hands and wearing a mask. I will be reading a poem by Beverly Peck called "Navigation in the Time of COVID-19" Here is a copy. Navigation in the Time of COVID-19 I press forward in my small boat in waters that are strange to me. I am not officially sea sick, but my stomach is queasy, my hands unsteady. My eyes seek what was familiar days, weeks, months ago as I hold my breath, then breathe. I bring to the surface of my mind a boatload of things for which I am grateful. The list is long and powerful like the rhythmic strokes of my oars lapping up water, bringing me closer to a new shore in my reach. Beverly Peck Thank you Rifka for mentioning my podcast to your mother-in-law Beverly Peck. Also giving a shout out again to Beverly Peck for letting me use her poem on my podcast. I am very grateful to have people in my life who supports what I am doing. It's not much but a little goes along way with the people in my life and what they bring to the table. The Sixties: Drugs, Sex and Rock n' Roll were the background of author Rifka Kreiter's coming of age. After a defining spiritual experience on an acid trip, Rifka set off on a quest to recapture her personal discovery. After surviving a fraught childhood in New York and L.A., Rifka Kreiter revels in studying acting at the High School of Performing Arts and dancing the Twist at the Peppermint Lounge. Her road leads through broken love affairs and virtually all the great movements of the sixties, including civil rights marches in Mississippi, antiwar demonstrations in San Diego, and est seminars in Manhattan. On a deeper level, this is a profound quest to heal her psychic wounds and find spiritual meaning that she intuits lies beneath all the tumult of those times. Here is an exploration of life's deepest questions, as Rifka strives to bust free, be it with drugs, therapy or meditation. A triumphant story about a search for liberation on every level, Home Free: A Child of the Sixties ends with a jaw-dropping discovery—one as unexpected as it is transformational. Rifka Kreiter was on the front lines of the 1960s most significant moments and movements, from Civil Rights marches Mississippi with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to antiwar demonstrations in San Diego to est seminars in Manhattan. Now she's captured it all--the protests, the drugs, the journeys into meditation and more--in her new memoir, Home Free: Adventures of a Child of the Sixties (May 16, 2017). A captivating memoir full of her quirky personality, candid humor, and relatable recollections, her upbringing (primarily by her mother and the revolving door of "step" men in her life), relationships, and eventual inner peace speak to many women's' interests.
