How to Use Hashtags to Grow Your Business

Even if you've never used one in your marketing before, you've seen hashtags on social media. They're the words after a post, each one starting with the # sign. They help people who see a Tweet, Instagram post, or Pinterest image to find the content and understand what it's about. While it's easy enough to add hashtags to your content, it requires skill and attention to do it artfully. In this article, we'll explain how to choose and use hashtags to attract new followers and – this is what you're here for – increase your profits. What is a Hashtag? Let's start with the basics for those who don't know. A hashtag is a word or phrase that appears after the # symbol on social media. There are no spaces, and the goal of a hashtag is to make it easy for people who are interested in your business and content to find you. Hashtags can be serious or whimsical. Community hashtags can crop up week after week and year after year. For example, #ThrowbackThursday (or #TBT) is a hashtag that has been making the rounds for over a decade. In fact, #ThrowbackThursday was started by Sports Illustrated all the way back in 2006! Hashtags can be related to topics or events. For example, if you're someone who owns a landscaping business, you might follow these hashtags, all of which we found on Twitter: #Landscaping #Lawn #Lawncare #PropertyMaintenance #GroundsMaintenance We also saw examples of lawn care and landscaping companies jumping on community hashtags such as #SpringAhead because – let's face it – spring is when a lot of us start working to get our lawns in shape for summer cookouts and lawn games. Tips for Finding Relevant Hashtags One of the most important elements of using hashtags is choosing the right hashtags to reach your target audience. It might be tempting to throw ten hashtags onto every post, but you'll do better with well-researched hashtags that are relevant to your business. Let's start with Twitter, the birthplace of the hashtag. When you log into your Twitter account, you'll see a menu that includes a search option. When you click it, you'll see a Trending tab. If you click on that, you'll get a list of trending hashtags and topics. You can also use the search function to find hashtags that are relevant to your business. There are some tools you can use to research hashtags as well. These include: Hashtagify Me is a free tool that you can use to find hashtags for Twitter and Instagram. HootSuite allows you to manage your social media and helps you find hashtags that are relevant to your business with its “Streams” feature. Google Trends is free to use and can help you find trending topics that you can use in your business Tweets and Instagram posts. Pinterest Trends is free and has a list of trending searches plus a search function. We suggest putting in some time researching hashtags. If you find someone that you think could be a good business connection that has used a relevant hashtag, follow them. You may be able to connect with them in a way that helps both of you. Tips for Using Hashtags What should you do with the hashtags that turn up in your research? Here are some suggestions. Find people who may be able to help you market your products. For example, say you make custom wedding cake toppers, and you notice a local baker posting pictures of wedding cakes with the hashtag “CakeTopper. You could DM the baker and ask if you can send them a sample topper and – if they like it – they can feature it in one of their posts and use the same hashtag. Look for trending hashtags and figure out how to make them relevant to your business. For example, if there's a holiday coming up, you can use holiday hashtags to suggest your products for gifts or for use at holiday meals or gatherings. Combine hashtags to expand your audience. Perhaps you've added a new service or a new product to your lineup. Expanding your hashtag vocabulary can help you get your social media content in front of a new audience. : #Hashtag #Youtube #Socialmedia #Hashtags for #Youtube have evolved over the past several years. It's now easier for content creators to classify their videos and make them more discoverable, and it's simpler for viewers to find the content they want. Hi, i'm cally, from the international institute of digital marketing. Here's what you need to know about #Hashtags for #Youtube. #Youtube imposes rules for #Hashtags #Youtube makes it very clear that #Hashtags “… are not promises or guarantees for success.” It's not enough just to add some #Hashtags to your video's description or title. You must also be aware of #Youtube's #Hashtag rules and community guidelines. The primary rule of #Youtube video #Hashtags is only to use #Hashtags related to your video's topic. Follow #Youtube's community guidelines Like other social media sites, #Youtube has community guidelines to protect its users. These guidelines apply to all of the content on its platform, including video #Hashtags. There are four main groups of policies: 1. Spam and deceptive practices 2. Sensitive content 3. Violent or dangerous content 4. Regulated goods Following these guidelines for #Hashtags will prevent your video from being removed and you from being kicked off the platform. #Hashtags may affect audience retention If someone watches a video from another content creator with the same #Hashtag, the viewer may click the #Hashtag and be directed away from that video. You may experience the same problem. A curious viewer might look for related content by clicking the #Hashtag attached to your video. This action lowers your audience retention. To combat this issue, use branded #Hashtags to ensure viewers find your content, and try to use related applicable #Hashtags across multiple videos, so yours continue to come up in results. You can't own a #Hashtag Creating a #Hashtag doesn't give you ownership. Yes, you can apply to trademark #Hashtags, but approval isn't a given. Rules about trademarking #Hashtags vary from country to country, so check your jurisdiction. Even if you do trademark a #Hashtag, you can't expect to have exclusive use of it. There's nothing to stop other #Youtube creators from using #Hashtags you've created—even if they're trademarked. ALEPH - GLOBAL SCRUM TEAM - Agile Coaching. Agile Training and Digital Marketing Certifications

When you use relevant hashtags(#) in your social media posts, people who are searching for those keywords can find your tweets and posts, and can potentially follow you. Unfortunately, if you use the WRONG hashtags, your marketing won't be nearly as effective. Hi, I'm Cally, From the International Institute of Digital Marketing. Let's discuss How To Find Great Hashtags To Market Your Business 1. Find out what hashtags influencers are using Influencers in your niche are already using a bunch of hashtags that are both popular and highly relevant to your audience. 2. Find trending hashtags in your niche As part of your social media strategy, you will definitely want to identify which topics are trending, both in general and in your industry. 3. Find relevant cross-platform hashtags Tagboard aggregates conversations happening across the web, it's a great tool for finding hashtags that are popular and relevantacross all platforms – and the best part is the tool shows you ACTUAL top posts that use that hashtag on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. 4. Use Twitter's tailored trends Twitter Trends gives you a list of topics and hashtags based on a bunch of factors directly related to YOU, including your: ● Location ● Your interests ● Who you follow These factors, combined with which tweets are currently trending (not trending yesterday or last week), mean you see tweets that are extremely relevant and popular – right now. 5. Use Hashtags.org to find trending hashtags and more One of the most popular tools out there is Hashtags.org, and for good reason. Enter a hashtag into the search box, and you'll receive a wealth of information including: ● The hashtag definition ● A 24-hour hashtag trend graph ● “Prolific users” of that hashtag ● Recent tweets ● Related hashtags 6. The low-tech option: brainstorming Take some time to sit down and brainstorm which keywords will be of interest to your audience.3 Once you've come up with a list, you can plug them into different tools to find related hashtags and to see how popular they really are! When using a hashtag in your post, that post is digitally grouped with other posts that use the same hashtag. For instance, someone can search “#coffee” and find posts by Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, the local coffee shop down the street, and anyone else who used “#coffee” in their post. Listen to hear how the best strategies to use hashtags to attract your target audience.

(Plus a handy Hashtag Hack Handbook) for just $5.00! https://christianbloggerscreentimeboundaries.teachable.com/p/official-instagram-insider-hacks-donor/   How would you like to up your hashtag game?  If you’ve ever wondered what is going on in the nebulous world of hashtags, you’ve come to the right place today.  And, we’ll talk about what kind of topics to share on Instagram. All this and more, coming up on our monthly member Q&A episode where I answer podcast supporter’s questions.  And if that sounds intriguing, stay tuned because I’ve got a hashtag resource you won’t want to miss! How to use hashtags on Instagram (Member Q&A)   1. How do you get that "see post" sticker on a shared post? From Pat Fenner @breakthroughhomeschooling Here’s what she’s talking about - have you ever watched someone’s story that had a graphic on it? And when you tapped on that square graphic, a rectangle with the transparent words “see post” popped up?  That’s because the person shared someone else’s feed post! So, If I share Pat's feed post to my story and you view that story and you tap on it, a transparent “see post” sticker pops up.  Then, when you tap on that sticker, it takes you to Pat’s feed post so you can read it!  Make sense?  Instagram gives us fun little ways to interact and support one another like this!  I usually like to go the extra mile and click the @mention sticker to tag the person so others can know that this photo belongs to Pat or whomever.  It’s just nice to go the extra mile.   2. How narrow should your niche be on IG? Is there an ideal number of topics to stick to? From Dawn @dawnklinge Your niche doesn’t have to be super narrow, but you should have one over-arching topic.  The more you do that the better off you are because it helps you to stand out.  But before you go into a brain cramp, just know that another thing that makes you stand out is the variety of posts you share, and that’s where the topics Dawn mentioned comes into play.  There is no set number of topics - you can have anywhere from 5-9, some experts even say up to 12!     I don’t advocate having that many because you could be super all over the map.  However, you could have 5 topics and then subtopics.  I personally have 7 and it’s a challenge to keep up with them.  However, just know that in some seasons - like a podcast launch for example AHEM - you may only use a handful of your topics and not hit on all of them.  Some people have monthly topics, which I’ve seen that work quite nicely.  It kind of helps your audience to associate what you’re teaching that way.     For instance, my topics are: Instagram education My coaching services or other Instagram products like my Authentic Instagram Engagement Course or my new Go live Jumpstart Kit Testimonies My faith Personal - family, marriage Travel - although that’s pretty sparse lately Funny Quotes on mid-life   The main thing is - remember to be real and share the person behind the account frequently - in stories, in the feed, in IGTV, and by going live.  Change it up!  Don't’ share your product in every single post - that’s the surest way to deaden your audience.  Use variety and jot down a few topics you can share. 3. I’d like to know how to use hashtags on Instagram From Meg Gleesner @Lettersfromhomepodcast   First, go for the hashtags under 100,000 posts so you’ll have a chance to show up at the top of the hashtag hub. Under 10,000 is even better. More on this later.   Secondly, make sure some of your hashtags relate to your photo, even if that’s not what you’re caption is about. Instagram is cracking down even more on this.

6 Strategies To Reach More People On Instagram

Instagram users “like” 4.2 billion posts every 24 hours. One billion people use Instagram with 500 million of them using the platform on a daily basis. Businesses can benefit from posting compelling content on Instagram, considering that 72 percent of its users have bought a product that they saw on the platform. If you’re looking to reach more potential customers, you can benefit from adding this outlet into your digital marketing plan. Here are six strategies to reach more people on Instagram: UTILIZE A LIVE VIDEO REGULARLYLike many social networks, Instagram rewards the users who perform live videos with greater reach. The networks usually give content creators more reach the longer their live video is. Announce your live videos in advance and work to build anticipation for them by informing your online and offline communities. USE HASHTAGS  TO GET FOUND MORE  ON THE PLATFORM’S  SEARCH ENGINEThe reason that hashtags can help you reach more people is that users search for hashtags related to a topic that interests them. For example, if you’re a parenting coach, you can produce a video or image providing parenting advice, using #ParentingAdvice in your message. That way, if someone searches for #ParentingAdvice, they may find your post related to a topic they were interested in enough to search for. ALWAYS POST  INSTAGRAM STORIESStories continue to serve as an engaging format for images and videos. There is an element of scarcity connected to stories since they expire after 24 hours. They format to fit the way most people hold their mobile devices: vertically. Four-hundred million people use Instagram Stories each day. You can produce engaging Stories straight from your mobile device. ENGAGE WITH OTHER USERS’ CONTENTLiking and commenting on other users’ images and videos can be an effective way to draw attention to your account. Many Instagram users check who likes their posts to keep tabs on who engages with their messages. If you consistently like pictures or videos based on a specific topic, the people posting the images or videos that you are liking may decide to look at your account. You can also comment on other people’s images or videos. After all, which gets more of your attention: when someone likes your post or when someone leaves a comment on your post? The comment gathers more attention. CREATE AN INSTAGRAM  AD CAMPAIGNThere are excellent targeting tools available on Instagram. You can reach groups of people based on their age, location and interests. You can also perform some advanced targeting by reaching the people who have visited your website, engaged with your previous ads or have watched a percentage of your videos. Additionally, you can test different groups of people against each other to determine which audience is engaging the most with your information. HOLD AN INSTAGRAM GIVEAWAYThis strategy is an excellent way to introduce new people to your business and spotlight the person who wins your giveaway. To enter into a random drawing to win a prize, you can ask users to like a post of yours, tag their friends and follow you on Instagram. For the people who perform those actions, randomly pick one to win your prize. If you’re holding a book launch, you can give away a signed copy of your new book. If you’re looking to move an item out of inventory, you can have it serve as the incentive to enter the giveaway. You can either mail the prize to the winner or get them to visit your physical location for a photo opp and winner announcement video. More than 12 percent of the planet uses Instagram. You can reach almost any type of person on the platform given its targeting options. With the above strategies in mind, go use Instagram to grow your business. #059: What You Need to Know NOW to Get More Traffic From Pinterest with Kate Ahl

The Blogger Genius Podcast with Jillian Leslie

In this post, we're delving into what you need to know NOW to get more traffic from Pinterest. What's Working Now with All of Pinterest's New Updates Pinterest comes out with updates and changes like any social media platform, such as Facebook or Instagram. The difference is that success on remains virtually the same even with changes because the foundation is never updated. If you are following good Pinterest strategies, such as… Using Pinterest as a search engine Focusing on your SEO Correcting problems ...you should remain untouched by these changes. Pinterest always values good content. Be sure you are always adding valuable content to your boards and you will be good to go. If you use Pinterest for your business, then you have likely heard of our guest this week, Kate Ahl. Kate Ahl is the founder and owner of Simple Pin Media, a Pinterest management company. If you want to follow Kate and get to know more about her, check out her podcast and her Facebook group. This is her third time coming on our show and she keeps all of us up-to-date on all things Pinterest. Plus, she is one of the kindest people I know and I am delighted to have her on again. The Purpose of Pinterest People use Pinterest to plan for the future. If someone wants to ideas, they go to Pinterest first. Pinterest informs our decisions and gives us inspiration, and then we can take action when we are ready. Pinterest introduces us to companies and websites that offer what we're looking for. Using Tailwind's SmartLoop Have you heard of SmartLoop? It's the newest feature from Tailwind, the Pinterest scheduler. Tailwind is a Pinterest approved pin scheduler and it's really important to us because we use it to schedule all of our pins. Smart Loop is a feature used to set your pins to go out to particular boards on a particular schedule. Instead of manually scheduling which pins go out, to which boards and on what days, you just put the pins you would like to be dropped continually into your boards, and Smart Loop will do it on repeat. This is helpful, especially if you have large amounts of content because everything will be pinned, without you worrying about forgetting something. You can then focus on putting your new content out using the more traditional side of Tailwind. Pinterest Lifted the Maximum Pins Allowed Since Pinterest began, they had a maximum number of 200,000 pins per account. 200,000 pins may seem like a lot, but for bloggers who have been on the platform for years and who release new content on a regular basis, it was all too easy to hit this threshold. Pinterest recently lifted the 200,000 pin threshold. Before they made this change, bloggers and entrepreneurs had to plan out how many pins to put out over a certain length of time in order to know when they hit the max allowed. How to Evaluate Your Pins Don't just do a pin dump for your Smart Loop cycle; be sure you evaluate the pins that you're adding. Organize and revisit to make sure your content is still fresh and adds value. Focus on what happens after people click away from Pinterest and visit your website. Make sure each pin takes the pinner to the right place on your site and that it's still worth keeping in your loop. Clean up your pins as you go. Everything you do on Pinterest should be with the goal to make it a good experience for your followers. Gaining Followers with Tailwind's SmartLoop I want to share a secret tip with you guys. Back in the day, when we had to stay under the maximum cap, we were pinning around sixty pins a day. Now that we've put these Smart Loops into play, we are pinning one hundred pins a day, and our traffic has gone up. Pinterest does change, so I am appreciating this boost right now while acknowledging that someday it may not work in our favor. However, since it is working in our favor right now, we will continue to take advantage of it. How to Set Up SmartLoops You can use your Smart Loops to repeat once a year or you can also set loops to keep going repeatedly. It's a nice feature that lets you customize the release of your loops. You will be able to get more followers by repinning high-quality pins, as well as posting new pins as you release new content. How to Grow Your Pinterest Followers Make sure that you use something like Milotree to grow your followers using Pinterest rules. Milotree will post your newest pins for you, and if they are high quality, and you have people interacting with them, it will signal to Pinterest to show that pin to more people. Pinterest wants: High-quality pins Relevant pins Fresh pins Why SmartLoop Does Not Spam Your Pinterest Boards There is some concern over whether your account will be marked spam if you use a system like Smart Loops, but in reality, this is not a problem. Kate has been in touch with Pinterest and they have confirmed that using Smart Loop will not get you marked as spam. What you do need to think about though is making sure you have a good user experience. You don't want to be putting out the same pin three times a day with low quality. You do not want viewers to look at your profile and see the same pin one hundred times. But if you are peppering the same pin every once in a while onto different boards, that's totally fine. Be very intentional about your keywords and descriptions because Pinterest is using them to decide what to show to viewers based on what they search. Video on Pinterest Video was first rolled out for big companies to promote themselves. But now anyone can upload a video naturally. Kate's best video tips: Less than a minute in length 1:1 ratio  (square) Catchy enough to make them visit your site Keywords in your descriptions Upload pins to relevant boards On the Pinterest app, we're seeing that videos pop up closer to the top during a search. The videos that take up the entire width of your phone screen are paid for. You can only get those with a promoted pin campaign. How to Use Hashtags on Pinterest The key to hashtags is relevance. Pinterest is using hashtags as another type of search term. Be specific and intentional on how you use them. Do not use hashtags to replace keywords, but put your hashtags at the end as a bonus. As marketers, we see Pinterest through a different lens. We see it as a way to market our products and hook our readers. But our users are on the platform solely because they find it helpful. Sticking with one or two hashtags will help more than ten. You can take it slow and test different hashtags to see which works best for you. Pinterest has said to not go back and update your hashtags. It will not help in any way because they're using a chronological format. Using Pinterest Like Your Friends Ask people in your life who are not marketers how they use Pinterest and you'll learn a lot about user behavior. Even when I go onto Pinterest looking for ideas, to me it's a totally different platform than what I use when I'm working on my business. I use secret boards to keep my personal boards and my business boards disconnected from each other. It's kind of like I have two personalities on there. Commenting On Pins Pins with lots of comments are going to rank higher, and that's something we can think about as pinners. Pinterest encourages you to comment on things, but we don't think about that all the time as marketers. When people are commenting on your pins, you should respond and maybe direct them to your website for more content like the pins they're commenting and posting pictures on. As Kate commented on more pins, she began to notice that she was getting followers from the genre of those pins. People feel more inclined to follow you if they feel some kind of connection. Pinterest Communities It is very labor intensive for a business owner to entice people to leave a platform like Facebook that is already community centered and join a community on Pinterest which has much more of a loner vibe. It's also a lot of work to manage communities in two different places. For those reasons and others, Kate has decided not to use the communities feature on Pinterest. Pinterest throws out new ideas all the time to see if people will hop into it and enjoy using it. Just because I am not seeing the benefits of communities, it doesn't mean my audience isn't. Remember, Pinterest is there to serve the user, not the marketer. When Pinterest tries new features, it's because they are trying to find ways they can become more valuable to the user and how they can keep them on their platform longer. Kate's Course Kate created a course for SmartLoop called Tailwind Smart Loop Simplified. One of Tailwind's priorities is providing value to its customers. They want to be sure they aren't wasting their customers' time. Kate created a course that hit three pain points: How to set up Smart Loop How to use it properly How to use it most effectively The course is set up so that people can be up and running confidently in about an hour and a half. They go into all the information you need to know about the different types of loops and how you can use them. This episode I speak to my business partner and wife, about her new venture 'Stories like ours'. Stories Like ours is a wedding stationary business that offers a high end product but without the price tag. Using a range of available templates that are updated as trends change, Rachel's business provides the full service including printing; utilising the lower print costs the company benefits from, due to pre-established networks. Rachel's background is in graphic design, while her sister Becky her business partner is a copywriter. Together they have begun to build a lifestyle business with the focus on supplementing their income and expanding beyond. I talk today about the importance of building a social presence in an intelligent way, as well as coming up with ideas to enable them to capitalise on what is a global audience for this product. Hashtags are things that as consumers we whack on, but for businesses, monitoring them correctly and having an alternative approach for using them in your own content, is generally forgotten. If you have a small business and are trying to grow your audience, then this discussion over our sunday cheese and biscuits (munching has been edited out.) will be really helpful. It's Rachel's first time she has helped me with a podcast so we haven't often spoken about what her venture should be doing, which made this so much more genuine. My takeaway is that I should probably help her a bit more! Data Driven Daily Tip 188: One more important one that the data says is extremely important is - when posting Instagram Stories, each :15 story post should have a relevant hashtag in it. It should be done via the Hashtag Sticker within stories. We randomly decided to start using the hashtag sticker in our stories, and the data shows that the visibility of our stories exploded from around 20-25 people viewing our story to upwards of 450 people viewing our story. While location stickers can also help increase your story's visibility, you can't always control your location. But you can control how strategic you are with your hashtags! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/paulhickey/support

Episode 3 - You don't need to be faster, just better Social media doesn't have to be a drag, it can be a superb resource, and lively to use if we think about how we're using it. We talk about how to keep up with the ever-increasing social media 'noise' here in this episode. Can you use LinkedIn and Twitter to get better? We think so, and explain how and why you should. This time we take our life in our hands by talking to people on the street, and at least one of them isn't me! Some of the stuff in there is: LinkedIn - should you? LinkedIn claim 60% of the UK's student and working population are connected in this article The We Are Flint survey which gives a different and interesting perspective Some suggestions to get the most out of your time if you dive in to LinkedIn Thank people - they'll appreciate it Take time to set up your profile Join groups - you can get good information Re-share articles - people will notice you Write articles. Come on, you know you want to. After all you know something that no one else does Limit your time on there - I reckon 30 mins a fortnight or month is probably enough Useful info from Forbes.com on setting up your profile and getting the most from LinkedIn Twitter - do you bucket? Some of the numbers I quoted were from this article from Brandwatch Using lists and how it may save your life. Or time. Or money. Ok, maybe not your life, but definitely time and after all time is money eh? Some suggestions for starting your lists: 'Family stuff' - this could include people who tweet about days out, kids clothes, education and so on 'People I want to engage with' - this is self-explanatory. Bear in mind people do see what you've called the list you put them in, so something like 'great connections' or similar may be a good name for this list Local Network People linked to the field you work in (field=vocation, not somewhere sheep graze, unless of course you're a farmer in which case it could be spot on). People linked to the field you want to work in (!) 'Inspirational People' 'Monday List', 'Tuesday List' - this is a different way to do it. Limiting the time you spend online each day My top five tips for new Twitter users:   Do NOT buy followers, or connect back to people claiming to "increase your followers to 20,000!". They are a waste of time, it's pointless and doesn't help you Engage with people, that's a much better way to grow than any 'hack' Remember that we're human (well most of us) and we like to be acknowledged Re-tweet and share tweets, it will grow your connections and show people you're interested in what they're talking about Use Hashtags - they still work. Maximum 3 per tweet though. #After #all #this #just #looks#annoying!!! And my bonus tip - Use the Twitter Hour. I ordered my equipment, but started with the basics of what I had - a selfie stick, my iPhone and what I had.   First Mover Advantage is how I launched my business online as well, and made millions along the way.   First, people told me I was crazy, and then they told me I got lucky.   I didn’t get lucky, I got going. So, I’m going to give you the same advice.   Figure out the basics of the equipment you need, and jump in. Swallow your pride and your fear and make things happen now!   Those who take action and deliver value will make this thing rock.   So, here are those 5 -   1. Give Value - there is no limit to what you can provide to people regarding direct sales, home business and personal development. The topics are limitless. No, you don’t need to be an expert. You just need to get started. What are you reading, studying and learning?   2. Have a call to action - I share my website and my Profit in My Pjs Report.   3. Be consistent - you don’t have to be the exact same time daily, but do your best to be consistent!   4. Use Hashtags and a captivating title with keywords. This is how people find you, especially when you are linked to Twitter.   5. Get Started now, and don’t wait.   Now, the Don’t -   Don’t make your platform nothing but a blatant pitch for your opportunity.   Can you talk about your business and products at some point? Yes, absolutely. Just launch in a way that gives value and then expand your brand.   Questions -   What do you do when you have a physical product? Most of us do have a physical product. You can showcase it, and do so from a personal story perspective and keep hype out of it. Share your product story and that will engage people more than facts and figures.   I share some language of what to use on the podcast.   Always look at things from a prospects perspective.   I LOVE and appreciate reviews!
