Dr. Melissa Corley Carter says: Your epic life actually IS rocket science!I was the epitome of vroom vroom veer, beginning with 20 years on the fast track chasing my dream to become an astronaut. Despite two Stanford engineering degrees, an Air Force officer commission, a PhD in astronautical engineering, and perfect vision after corrective eye surgery, my pre-surgical eyesight disqualified me and shattered my dream.I continued on the fast track of an Air Force career that looked like traditional success, but internally, I was adrift. I could have followed in the footsteps of the high-powered and inspiring women I worked for, but I realized I wanted to inspire people in a different way - and with a lot more life balance. When I came to a major decision point, I leaped into the unknown and left my active-duty military career. At the time I didn't know what my life purpose was, but I knew it was bigger than what I was doing. In the years since, I've realized that my astronaut dream emerged from an intuitive knowing of my spiritual connection with the universe, from a desire to inspire people to greatness the way astronauts had always inspired me, and from the vision of a unified and harmonious world. Now I use basic principles of rocket science to help rockstar humans reclaim their power, own their awesomeness, and take giant leaps of faith. I'm living my true dream every day! Also a 7 continents marathoner, I'm the author and photographer of the award-winning coffee table book, "Running the World: Marathon Memoirs from the Seven Continents," and the companion wisdom card deck, “Running YOUR World." Dr. Melissa Corley Carter Vroom Vroom Veer Stories Wanted to be an astronaut since the 5th grade; parents were suppportive of that goal Melissa has an identical twin sister who also was in Air Force ROTC and their paths diverged after college On the Air Force officer fast track; got to attend a prestigious graduate program as her 2nd assignment; maybe graduating from Stanford had something to do with that Next prestigious Air Force assignment was an aide to a general; she also witnessed the historic nose-to-nose meeting of Enterprise and Discovery (Star Trek fans?) There was fine print in the astronaut qualification criteria that stated if your eye sight was "this bad" then don't bother with the corrective surgery; Melissa's pre-Lasik eye sight was "that bad" After realizing her dream of being astronaut was over; she looked at the amazing career track of her bosses in the Air Force and discovered that path wasn't appealing to her She found a new calling teaching leadership as an Air Force reservist; she also did a Marathon on every continent and wrote a coffee table book with stunning images and words of inspirational reflection Show Summary In this episode of "Vroom Vroom Veer," host Jeff Smith welcomes Dr. Melissa Corley Carter, a former astronaut candidate turned life coach. The conversation starts with Jeff introducing Melissa, who shares her background and leads into her website, "Epic Life Actually." Melissa dives into her personal and professional journey, explaining how she transitioned from being deeply involved in aerospace engineering to discovering her true passion in life coaching. She discusses the concept of everything being like rocket science in that it's about moving from where you are to where you want to be, acknowledging progress, and making adjustments. Jeff shares a personal anecdote about observing different thinking styles during an informal experiment at LA Air Force Base, which leads Melissa to reflect on her own experience growing up in Dallas with an identical twin and her dreams of becoming an astronaut since fifth grade. Melissa opens up about her educational path through Stanford University, where she studied mechanical engineering and astronautical engineering. She talks about her intense academic and extracurricular commitments,

#097 - As my voice soldiers on through the remnants of a cold, I sit down with adventurer and author Edward Olu, the spirited soul behind the children's book "Around the World in Eight Dives: Scuba Diving All Seven Continents." Our conversation travels from the depths of Edward's Nigerian origins to his life today in Southern California, capturing the ethos of resilience and human spirit. He's not just a man who's conquered underwater realms on every continent; he's also a storyteller whose life lessons and pursuit of fear's edge have reshaped his worldview, inspiring all to seek out their next chapter of discovery, be it global or in the comfort of your neighborhood.Adventure, Edward argues, isn't reserved for the adrenaline junkies alone - it's woven into the fabric of our everyday encounters, from the skateboarding trials of his kids to the novel tastes at a local farmer's market. This episode peels back the layers of what it means to live adventurously, encouraging us to embrace the unknown and the joy it can bring into our lives. As Edward shares his tales of diving into icy waters and the preparations that come with extreme cold water diving, it's clear that the richness of life is not found at the surface, but often in the depths where we challenge ourselves the most.Looking to the horizon, Edward envisions his future dives as selective masterpieces, as we talk about his eagerness to dive into the world of freediving and share the magic of the oceans with his children. Our riveting exchange underlines the importance of choice in our quests and the serenity that comes from a balanced approach to the thrill of adventure. With the 100th episode on the horizon, Edward's eloquence and passion for life remind us all that it's the journey that defines us, not just the snapshots of our destinations. Kirill and Irina have told Sergei Vasilyev what they found at the diamond mine at the Tuv oasis. His story of what happened to him and his family is going to shock the two of them - and provide an explanation for the sinister events that have been troubling Gilbert Villiers. In London, Roy Marsden is not pleased to find out that Macey has been visiting Piet Hoodjink, London director of Durban Diamonds, or that she has been lying to him about Kirill being ill. In return, he has a little surprise for her ...
Kirill and Irina head back to Dhosk and civilization after their adventures underground. Their next visit is to Sergei Vasilyev, a colleague of Irina's at the University of Dhosk who used to work at the mine. What has he got to tell them? Macey has decided to drop in and see Piet Hoodjink, the director of Durban Diamonds in London and a fierce business rival of Sir Gilbert Villiers. Could he be at the root of the problem?
Kirill and Irina have to go down the stairs into the bowels of the deserted diamond mine to see if they can find anything there that could explain who is behind the campaign to smear Gilbert Villiers. But are they going to get out of there alive? Macey is also dealing with a tricky situation. How much can she rely on what Eamonn Fitzroy, the CFO for Seven Continents says?
Macey Church and Kirill Solokov continue to try to unravel what is happening at Seven Continents, the diamond mining giant. Macey has interviews with some of the directors at the London headquarters while Kirill and Irina, are following up clues given to them by the Kerkomen nomads in the other side of the world in Kazbakistan.
Macey Church reports what she has learnt from interviewing Nancy Inovix to Dr Roy Marsden, director of ECO Warriors, and receives an unexpected invitation. Meanwhile in Kazbakistan, Kirill Solokov sets off across the desert with the anthropologist Dr Irina Kerkomenova to visit the Kerkomen nomads. Do they have some answers as to why Sir Gilbert Villiers is being smeared?
Macey Church and Kirill Sokolov set to work to uncover who is sending sinister messages to Sir Gilbert Villiers and the Seven Continents diamond mining company. While Macey begins interviewing Villiers' colleagues in London, Kirill is headed for Kazbakistan where he gets quite a surprise when he lands at the airport …
Roy Marsden has gone back to London and Macey and Kirill will start carrying out interviews in Seven Continents on Monday, to try to discover who is behind the anonymous messages threatening Sir Gilbert. So, maybe they can have a relaxing weekend first and renew old friendships? Think again - things are about to turn nasty.
Sir Gilbert has introduced Macey and Kirill to his close associate Dr Roy Marsden, director of the environmental protection group ECO Warriors. But what is his connection to the diamond mining industry and what is it that Seven Continents is so worried about?
Kirill Solokov and Macey Church, investigators for Capstan Consultants are on their way to meet Sir Gilbert Villiers, the chairman of Seven Continents, a diamond mining company, and his wife the former ballerina Tatyana Kerkomenova. On their way to the Villiers' country estate Ashdown Hall, Kirill shares a surprising piece of information with Macey. Will the fact that he was once engaged to Tatyana help or hinder their investigation? And who else are they going to meet this weekend?
Seven Continents is a diamond mining company with a reputation for ethical and sustainable exploitation of natural resources. So why is the charismatic chairman, Sir Gilbert Villiers, receiving threatening messages? And what is the connection to Kazbakistan, homeland of his ballerina wife Tatyana Kerkomenova? Macey Church and Kirill Solokov, investigators from Capstan Consultants, are given the job of finding out what is going on, a job where personal and professional interests might be about to collide.

When Melissa Corley Carter was in 5th grade, an astronaut came and talked to her class. She knew then that she wanted to travel into space herself. She became a rocket scientist, but she wasn't able to realize her astronaut dream. She did achieve another audacious goal, though; she ran a marathon on all seven continents. She wrote Running the World: Marathon Memoirs from the Seven Continents about her outer marathon journey and her inner journey of creating a more powerful and purposeful life. As she says, “Running has such a capacity to connect us to our bodies, to the rhythm of the earth, to our own nature.” In this conversation, she shares what she learned from both journeys. Just what the hell is “REALLY going on down there?!” You remember, of course, the bizarre stories from just a few years ago … of an apparently “endless” stream of major officials — from Presidents … to Secretaries of State … to Russian Orthodox prelates — all suddenly deciding, one after another, that “a summer vacation in Antarctica” was a MUST addition to their “bucket list!” Why …. Then, of course, there was Putin’s equally sudden decision to send his entire “Baltic Fleet” on a ~20,000-mile-round trip to the Antarctic … in the SAME time period. On the show today, I welcome Michelle Rhee, young adult cancer survivor of Thyroid Cancer (you know, “the good one” I’M KIDDING) whose ordeal left her having over a dozen major surgeries, including open heart surgery for a related underlying rare disease. Back in the heyday when the young adult cancer movement was taking off, Michele was looking to take an active role in our startup culture. After being introduced, I helped land her an internship at the Children’s Cause for Cancer Advocacy, a landmark organization that everyone should know about, which helped launch my career in founding Stupid Cancer. She received BOTH her MBA and MPH in three years and, because she’s such an underachiever, went on to pursue a storied career thus far representing the voice of the patient at every company she’s worked for; including The National Brain Tumor Society, Takeda Oncology, Bluebird Bio, and now as the VP of Patient Affairs at X4 Pharma. She’s also traversed ALL SEVEN continents in a quest to find herself, make sense of the madness, and live her life on her terms. So, prepare yourself for an inspirational conversation amongst friends, and if my “conversation amongst friends” I mean “eavesdropping on our first phone call in 7 years,” well, then you’re in for a treat. The Seven Summits is the ultimate mountaineering challenge. To stand on the highest peak on each of the seven continents is a feat only a handful of people have ever achieved. Rebecca Stephens MBE is the first British woman to do so. She's also the first British woman to summit Everest, and she's going to be taking us step-by-step up every single one of those climbs. Are you ready to stand on the roof of the world? Let's go.But this story is about more than just mountaineering. What makes Rebecca so special is that she's able to articulate the lessons she learned on each of those seven climbs, and she's going to be passing on that wisdom to us too . Since completing the Seven Summits, back in 1994, Rebecca has spoken and coached all over the world. Her 'Seven Summits of Success' have helped individuals and businesses all over the world achieve their goals. We're going to climb Everest, Denali, Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro and all the rest. But we're also going to learn what it takes to follow your dreams, and scale your own summits, whatever they may be. Rebecca's message is simple: live your life according to your passions and you can achieve anything. Even, perhaps, standing on the seven highest summits in the world.Highlights include:Climbing Mount Everest with the first British woman to summit, feeling what it's like to stand on top of the worldScaling Denali, the highest mountain in North America, after being trapped in a snow cave for eight days in one of the worst storms the mountain's ever seenReaching the summit of Acongagua, in Argentina, whilst battling 100mph+ windsStanding on the top of Mount Vinson, in Antarctica, Kilimanjaro, in Africa, Cartenz Pyramid, in Indonesia, and Elbrus, in RussiaDiscovering the wisdom of the world's highest mountains - each of the Seven Summits has something unique to teach us, and Rebecca has been sharing those lessons for more than a quarter of a centuryBe inspired to scale your own summits, whatever they may be“The joy of the mountains is they strip away any superficialities revealing that which matters: namely head, heart, and values. There’s no greater teacher of the human condition, of leadership and of working together as a team.” - Rebecca StephensWho's the guest? On 17th May 1993, Rebecca Stephens became the first British woman to climb Everest and was awarded an MBE for her achievement. The following year she went on to become the first British woman to scale the Seven Summits, the highest mountain on each of the seven continents. Philip Temple is a living legend and one of New Zealand's great explorers. He made the first ascent of the Carstensz Pyramide in West New Guinea (now known as Papua) back in 1962, which has come to be regarded as the technically most difficult of the 'Seven Summits of the Seven Continents'. During his exploration of the island, Philip was among the last to witness the tool-making rituals of a stone-age culture before it was overtaken by the modern world. He went on to explore a swathe of unmapped central New Guinea Highlands, and he risked his life to recover the human remains from a US aircraft that had crashed on a sheer mountain.Philip is perhaps better known as an author and has written several non-fiction books, novels and even children's books. In this episode, we discuss his adventures in New Guinea and the book, The Last True Explorer, that he wrote about the expedition. It is truly our privilege to share part of Philip's story with you. He wears his achievements lightly and, aside from his own books, he hasn't received much recognition or attention for his remarkable feats.Philip lives in Dunedin with his wife, poet and novelist, Diane Brown. We will endeavour to bring your part 2 with Philip so we can cover his many other expeditions and first ascents.//EPISODE EXTRAS//For more information on Philip and his books, you can visit his website here.//SUPPORT THE SHOW//If you like what we do, please consider supporting the podcast on Patreon. We've set it up so you can choose from:1. This episode is with the Kitty Cole about her race day down in Campeche, Mexico. Kitty talks about how her first marathon and Easter Island. She has also completed Seven Marathons on Seven Continents. Kitty talks about some details of how the travel and logistics went as she traveled from the United States down to Mexico and the adjustments she would make in the future for this race. Kitty is from Wisconsin and being this is an earlier season race that tends to be warm, there were some issues she conquered along the day on the course. She talks about her nutrition plan and the challenges she faced. In the end she walked away with a slot for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship down in South Africa. She highly recommends getting out of your comfort zone. Because of this, she often goes in to the local places that many folks do not wonder to in foreign cities, and she noted how safe she felt when she was alone or even with her friend. It was a remarkable experience for her and she highly recommends travelling there. This is not a touristy city, but a true Mexican race that has a deep rooted heritage and a friendly atmosphere where people love to help anyone out. She gives some tips for the bike course as well. George has set two ambitious goals. First, he wants to summit the tallest mountain on each continent. Second, he intends to travel to every country in the world. He has made great progress so far, summiting six of the seven summits and has traveled to 78 UN countries. George has climbed the highest mountain on each continent, except for Mt. Vinson Massif in Antarctica, which is quite remote and expensive to climb. George has showed true grit. His first attempt at summiting Mt. Everest ended in failure, with the peak only being a couple hundred feet away. He was not deterred and the following year he successfully submitted Mt. Everest. This feat was accomplished at great monetary and time expense. George talks about his summit of Mt. Elbrus, which nearly ended in true disaster. George has an unusual list of countries he has traveled to. He has not been to Ireland or Denmark, but he has traveled to Afghanistan, Sudan, Pakistan, and Somalia. Heshares with us why he is not fond of Burundi, and why he believes Torres de Plaines in Chile is a special place. George’s episode marks a milestone for Counting Countries. This is the 50th episode.
