How Can You Bring Light Unto Nations? with Solomon Friedman

It goes without saying that the internet can be a disgusting display of human nature. Anonymous trolls, scams, and false information run rampant and they're not hard to run into. A centerpiece to this disturbing reality is the adult entertainment industry which has never been known to treat people with dignity. Exposing people of all ages to this content can do a variety of harmful things but the worst is that it enables everyone to participate in it including the young.  Solomon Friedman of Ethical Capital Partners recognized this truth. While his calling was not a religious one, he has helped make the internet a safer place by incorporating device-based age verification technology and sharing such recognition software with law enforcement. Friedman is responsible for putting up roadblocks in front of every nefarious action that takes place on a variety of adult sites. Chaz Volk, host of Bad Jew, learns that bringing light to the darkest of places means taking on unpopular projects while showing proud leadership and poise.  00:00 Introduction 05:35 Adult industry pioneered key internet innovations 07:06 Surprising ideas about ethics in internet marketing 11:19 Online platforms need moderation and safety measures 16:14 Opting out, age gates needed for online content 19:47 Internet privacy is essential for freedom and democracy 22:40 Jurisdiction of freedom 23:51 Tech giants and governments needed for safer platforms 26:55 Legal, meets safety standards, limits certain content 30:16 Conclusion About Solomon Friedman:  Connect with Solomon Friedman Solomon is a trial and appellate lawyer, representing individuals and organizations before all levels of court in Canada. He is certified as a specialist in criminal law by the Law Society of Ontario. For over a decade, Solomon has been a trusted voice at Parliament, regularly appearing before Standing Committees of both the House of Commons and Senate in Canada, providing testimony about criminal, regulatory and constitutional law matters. Solomon is a legal author and commentator. He has published dozens of academic and popular articles and is the co-author of Canada's leading text on firearms law and regulation. He also lectures widely to audiences of defence lawyers, judges and police officers on a wide spectrum of criminal and regulatory law topics.  Solomon's work has been recognized by his peers in both the legal and broader business community. In 2014, he was named one of the Forty under 40 by the Ottawa Business Journal and the Ottawa Chamber of Congress. In 2016, he was given Precedent Magazine's Precedent Setter Award. In 2018, he received the Regional Senior Justice Award by the County of Carleton Law Association. Solomon is an adjunct law professor, teaching The Law of Evidence and Advanced Criminal Evidence at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. Prior to his call to the bar, Solomon clerked for Justice Morris Fish of the Supreme Court of Canada. Solomon came to the law following rabbinical studies in Israel, where he was ordained in 2005. On this episode, I chat with Antioch City Councilwoman elect Tamisha Walker where we talk about how she got elected, address some of the rumors on her decade old arrest, where she stands on voting blocks, the police department and direction of the city. Episode Overview: 01:05 – we talk about the election and how she is 196 votes ahead of Joy Motts. I ask her how she beat an incumbent city council member and a city council member who previous served in Manny Soliz Jr. 02:53 – We talk about in her district, what she learned on the campaign trail. Also what most residents were curious about and their concerns – traffic safety, blight and trash, and crime. 05:46 – Walker talks about this assumption of a “voting block” with Lamar Thorpe and Monica Wilson.  Walker rejects the idea of voting blocks. 11:11 – Walker urges people to “calm down” on this idea of Charter City, she doesn’t believe it can happen in the 2-years she is serving on the City Council. 12:15 – We get into people calling Tamisha “arsonist” or “felon” on social media based on a decade old arrest. She explains people either believe in the criminal justice system and rehabilitation or you don’t. if you don’t believe it, how can you continue to support a system that doesn’t rehabilitate.  She explains people can change and she needed treatment and mental health support along with spiritual guidance. 16:55 – we discuss this idea that Walker got the “hood vote” which put her over the top to win the City Council Election. 18:12 – We discuss where Walker stands with the Antioch Police Department, possible meetings with community activists.  She also talks about police intimidation during the campaign trail against her and Gabe Makinano. 23:46 – We touch on the City of Brentwood incident involving the Joe Biden mannequin at a Donald Trump supporters house. We talk about how Brentwood is willing to discuss this, Antioch is dragging its feet on a community meeting on racism.  How to we move from agenda pushing to actual dialogue.  We talk about activism and protests and what should and should not occur. 33:35 – Where does Tamisha draw the line from City Councilmember versus community activism.  We talk about the “defund the police” movement. She also says there is too much “word play” going on. She says the city can’t do safety with 80 officers.  We also get into police communication with the community. 41:06 – We discuss the fear that the new City Council will fire Antioch Police Chief Tammany Brooks, that City Clerk position under Ellie Householder will be rewarded with a full-time, fully salaried position. The idea of a charter city is also discussed. Walker says this will not be a “radical” city council. 44:03 – We discuss Ad-Hoc committees versus Standing Committees along with these “serial meetings” that are occurring that no one is talking about. Walker says she wants meetings with impact and wants all meetings to fall under Brown Act and public announcements, staffed and minutes. 46:35 – We talk about racial equity and how Tamisha will push equity in Antioch (Question by Supervisor John Gioia). 50:00 – we talk about the Antioch downtown and how she will work to support downtown business, address homeless issues and should police continue responding to homeless incidents down there. We also get into the idea people think development will stop under this council because developers will not want to work with this council.  She wants a cleaner and safer downtown. 57:49: I bring up the Antioch homeless trailers still sitting in the public works yard.  The need to address the Antioch homeless issue.  We talk about the need for services while Walker calls on more help from Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors Diane Burgis and Federal Glover. 1:07:58 – We discuss youth services and Walker would like to see focus groups and more discussion. 1:10:01 – We talk about the City of Antioch and transparency. 1:12:05 – We close by talking about how much work will need to be done immediately for Antioch to move forward.

What are the Opportunities and Challenges for Alberta in its 2019 Budget? (Part 1)

Budget 2019 reflects a commitment to responsible fiscal management and a promise to balance the budget in 4 years. It's focused on creating jobs and delivering public services and infrastructure to support private sector investment and a vibrant society. Alberta's many successive provincial deficits have created a serious financial situation and a debt burden that has reached $62.7 billion. Government spent almost $2 billion on interest (debt servicing) last year – more than what was spent on 17 out of 21 ministries. Economic growth is expected at 0.6% in 2019 reflecting market access challenges. The economy should pick up strength next year, but it will take time for the labour market to fully recover. Although growth prospects are solid, external risks are high for Alberta's trade-and-energy driven economy. Total revenue is forecast to remain flat at approx. $50 billion in 2019-20 and 2020-21, before increasing in 2021-22 and 2022-23. A fairly modest but realistic oil price outlook, along with market access issues, may impede revenue growth over the next few years. This reality arguable means spending reductions are necessary. The 2019 budget includes moderate cuts to operating spending of 2.8% over four years ($1.3 billion lower than 2018-19 levels), compared to the nearly 20% cuts Albertans saw in the 1990s. The speaker will highlight the budget opportunities and challenges and detail more specifically, how Lethbridge may be affected. Speaker: Nathan Neudorf, Alberta MLA for Lethbridge East Constituency Nathan Neudorf was elected as the Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta for Lethbridge-East on April 16, 2019. Mr. Neudorf is a member of the Special Standing Committee on Members' Services, the Standing Committees on Private Bills and Private Members' Public Bills, the Standing Committee on Families and Communities and the Standing Committee on Privileges and Elections, Standing Orders and Printing. Mr. Neudorf has extensive experience in commercial construction. He has his civil and structural engineering diploma and is a red seal journeyman carpenter and gold seal project manager. As an active community volunteer and leader, Mr. Neudorf served as the past president of the Lethbridge Construction Association and on the board of directors for the Alberta Construction Association, Alberta Construction Safety Association and Worker's Compensation Board. Overview: Todd Schlekeway is the Executive Director of the National Association of Tower Erectors. In this episode we talk about what it takes to lead a trade association dedicated to quality and safety in what has traditionally been a high-risk industry. Todd shares his experiences in sports, legislature and trade association leadership and how he works to bring people together for a set of common goals in an extremely important industry. Todd Schlekeway’s Biography: Todd became the Executive Director of the National Association of Tower Erectors (NATE) in June of 2012. As Executive Director of NATE, Todd provides overall leadership and vision working in concert with the Association’s staff, Board of Directors, volunteer Standing Committees and approximately 780 member companies. Prior to joining NATE, Todd worked for seven years as the founder and principal of a public affairs and communications firm called Full Court Strategies Group, LLC. Todd also has extensive policy experience having served for two terms in South Dakota’s state legislature where he represented a Sioux Falls, South Dakota legislative district in both the State House and the State Senate. Todd received his undergraduate college degrees from the University of Sioux Falls (USF) with a B.A. in History/Political Science and a B.S. in Exercise Science. He also earned a Master’s degree in Education (M.Ed.) from USF. While at the University of Sioux Falls, Todd also participated in collegiate athletics as a member of the USF basketball team. Todd currently resides in Sioux Falls, SD with his wife Jill and three sons Gavin, Grant and Jett. Show Notes: Todd learned a lot about leadership through athletics. Character, integrity, building relationships and learning to deal with adversity were very important in Todd’s life growing up and helped shape who he is today. Serving as a legislator helped Todd learn how to leverage relationships to pass legislations and build coalitions. He now manages an 810+ member trade organization. The tower industry is a high-risk industry and NATE is working to make the industry safer. There are multiple layers within the tower industry and NATE is working hard to protect safety and quality from being compromised. There is a direct correlation between quality and safety. Behind the mobile technology we use every day there are tower climbers doing work to construct, maintain and repair cell towers on a regular basis. This is an important job and safety has to be integrated into tower work. NATE is at the forefront of working to provide safety training for the tower industry. As the industry prepares for 5G technology NATE is also preparing for the spike in demand and their mission is to help make sure the men and women working in the tower industry go home safely at the end of the day. On this week’s episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart podcast, I had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Emma Stokes onto the show to discuss leadership and advocacy in physical therapy! Emma Stokes BSc (Physio), MSc (research), MSc Mgmt, Phd is an associate professor and a Fellow of Trinity College Dublin. She is the deputy head of the physiotherapy programme and teaches on the entry to practice programmes in Dublin and Singapore. The focus of her research and teaching is professional practice issues that builds on her work with professional, regulatory and charitable organisations. She is the Minister for Health's nominee for physiotherapy to the Health & Social Care Professions Council & Physiotherapists Registration Board in Ireland. She is currently the President of WCPT.   In this episode, we discuss: -Practical steps that create leadership opportunities -Why self-awareness and the Power of No are integral to leadership -Thoughts on what may impact women on their path to higher goals -Dr. Stoke’s experiences with failure and building resilience -A framework for advocacy in physical therapy -How to get the most from a conference experience -And so much more!   Dr. Stokes shares great advice for those who want to get involved in higher roles that before you can lead others, you first need to be able to lead yourself. To develop that self awareness you must, “Be clear about what your values are. So learn about your values—where they’ve come from, how they serve you, how you use them in the service of others, what they bring to you as a person. And if you understand them very explicitly then you will understand when they are challenged and whether you're prepared to have them challenged or whether you need to put your hand up and walk away from a situation.”   We also discuss the importance of looking to a mentor to help cultivate leadership characteristics within ourselves. Dr. Stokes suggests that you, “Identify something that someone does that you admire and have this conversation with them. Find out how they got to where they are. Sometimes it is just looking at a behavior and saying that is a behavior that is a positive behavior that I would like to adopt. It is mimicking.”   Dr. Stokes reminds us that to have an effective therapeutic relationship with the best outcome for our patients, we need to guide them on their journey and that, “The solution is owned by the client. You unpack that solution with them and it is something they own rather than us giving them a fix.”   Being an advocate for physical therapy comes down to, “Understanding what it is you want to achieve and really drill down into that. Once you understand what the outcome is, then you need to look at context. What is the environment in which you want this change to happen, who are the key people that may be the decision makers, understand who the people will be in terms of allies, who are the people who won't be so positive about this change... Understanding the context then allows you to think about what you want to do, the strategy… find the [evidence] you need in order to [support] this.” More about Dr. Stokes: Education and work experience: Emma Stokes qualified as a physiotherapist in 1990 [BSc Physiotherapy, Trinity College Dublin]. While working as a clinical physiotherapist at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin (1990-1996), she completed a post-graduate Diploma in Statistics in 1993 and MSc (Research) in 1995 both at Trinity College Dublin. She took up an academic position at Trinity College in 1996, completed a PhD in 2005 and a Master’s degree (MSc Mgmt, Business Administration) in the School of Business in 2008. She is an associate professor at the Department of Physiotherapy, Trinity College Dublin [1996 to date]. She was elected as a Fellow of the College in 2012. She commenced a Diploma in Leadership & Professional Coaching in September 2014. Since May 2015 she has been the President of WCPT.   Leadership: Emma Stokes has played a number of leadership roles over the course of her career. Since the early 1990’s, she has been an active member of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists (ISCP). As well as acting as a professional adviser, she has chaired the Society’s Standing Committees for International Affairs and for Finance. In 2012, she was appointed as the Director of Professional Development and has led the establishment of the ISCP’s first professional development unit, in preparation for the required organisational transformation of the ISCP when the physiotherapy regulatory board opens. Drawing on key stakeholder and member engagement as well as her international experience, she led the project that has culminated in the establishment of a unit of 3 staff and more than 40 volunteers whose chief function is to position the ISCP as a key provider of continuing professional development in the coming years. In 2010 she completed a 5-year term as a College Dean at Trinity College Dublin [15,000 students] with responsibility for student discipline. She was the first woman to be appointed to this senior academic management position.   Board membership: Her experience of eight board directorships covers the health, education, regulation and charity sectors. She recently completed a term as the chair of the board of a charity for people with Parkinson’s Disease – www.moveforparkinsons.com.   Regulation: She is currently the Minister for Health’s nominee to represent the physiotherapy profession on Ireland’s regulatory authority – the Health & Social Care Professions Council. She has been an invited speaker at the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy Regulators (USA) leadership workshop and annual conference and the International Network of Physical Therapy Regulators. She is a member of the recently established (2014) Physiotherapists Registration Board that will regulate physiotherapy in Ireland.   Research, scholarship and teaching: Dr. Stokes has had two main research interests. The first has been in the area of rehabilitation with a focus on novel ways to mediate exercise intervention and participation post stroke and in people with neurological disabilities. Her current research focus is on national and international professional issues in physiotherapy. She has published widely in these areas in international peer-reviewed journals. SPECIAL SESSION TUESDAY FEBRUARY 19 at NOON at Country Kitchen Catering A government-appointed commission's latest ideas were put forth recently following a series of public hearings in the fall. A new Lethbridge riding would cover the city and county of Lethbridge, including Coaldale, Coalhurst, Picture Butte and Nobleford, while Cardston would join an expanded Foothills constituency. Raymond, Magrath and Stirling, as well as Milk River, would join Medicine Hat Medicine Hat MP LaVar Payne has filed a protest to the changes, citing concerns about potentially losing Brooks from his riding to become part of Bow River, which also would include Taber and Vauxhall. As well, the Blood Reserve would move to the Medicine Hat constituency, while the Piikani Nation would be part of the redefined Foothills riding along with communities north along Highway 2. The exact process for objections and changes has yet to be announced, but a final decision on the new boundaries will be made in September and become effective for the next federal election, likely in 2015. Speaker: LaVar Payne, MP for Medicine Hat Since first being elected to the House of Commons in 2008, LaVar Payne has had the privilege to sit on the Standing Committee on Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development and also on National Defence. LaVar currently sits on the Standing Committees on Agriculture and Agri-Food and also on Public Safety and National Security.
