There are sailors who boldly sail into the Southern Ocean and brave the winds and the waves. They do it all by themselves. This is part of a race called the Golden Globe Race (GGR), which tests the mettle of the best of sailors. In its most recent edition, Kirsten Neuschafer from South Africa became the first woman to win (or even complete) the race. Closely behind her was Abhilash Tomy (a former naval officer from India). Abhilash was also the first Indian to complete the race. The persistence, resilience and courage displayed by the participants of GGR is quite something!Unsurprisingly, most participants in this race, drop out of it. Why do they retire? Annie Cohen Kopchovsky is already struggling under the weight of patriarchy when two arrogant gentlemen wage a bet that a woman cannot possibly be as physically capable as a man nor able to care for herself as a man can. The wager? $10,000 if Annie can circumnavigate the world in less than 15 months and raise $5,000 in the process. Eager to prove those "gentlemen" wrong, Annie jumps at the chance, and leaves her family behind for the bike trail - the only problem? She's never ridden a bicycle before! How on earth will she get around the entire world with just her 42lb bike, a skirt and corset, one change of clothes and a pearl-handled revolver? Originally aired - July 31, 2017In 1982, at the age of just twenty-three and halfway through her architecture studies, Elspeth Beard left her family and friends in London and set off on a 35,000-mile solo adventure around the world on her 1974 BMW R60/6.Reeling from a recent breakup and with only limited savings from her pub job, a tent, a few clothes and some tools, all packed on the back of her bike, she was determined to prove herself. She had ridden bikes since her teens and was well traveled. But nothing could prepare her for what lay ahead. When she returned to London nearly two and a half years later she was stones lighter and decades wiser. She'd ridden through unforgiving landscapes and countries ravaged by war, witnessed civil uprisings that forced her to fake documents, and fended off sexual attacks, biker gangs and corrupt police convinced she was trafficking drugs. She'd survived life-threatening illnesses, personal loss and brutal accidents that had left permanent scars and a black hole in her memory. And she'd fallen in love with two very different men. In an age before email, the internet, mobile phones, sat-navs and, in some parts of the world, readily available and reliable maps, Elspeth achieved something that would still seem remarkable today.Told with honesty and wit, this is the extraordinary and moving story of a unique and life-changing adventure. Her website: www.elspethbeard.comThe Book: www.bookdepository.com/Lone-Rider-Elspeth-Beard/9781782438045Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/adventure-sports-podcast/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Renata is a legendary Czech-born adventurer and mountaineer. She was the first Swedish and Czech woman to climb Mount Everest and was listed in Outside Magazine as one of the world's “25 adventure goddesses." In 2005, after the death of her partner, Göran Kropp (also a well-known adventurer), she embarked on what she calls the "Around America Adventure". She would circumnavigate the lower 48 US states by bike and kayak. When biking, she would pull her kayak behind her with a set of two wheels and while kayaking, she would ship her bike ahead of her at the next portion of the trip.  She started in Seattle and paddled to San Diego, bicycled San Diego to Brownsville, Texas, continued kayaking around Florida to Eastport, Maine, and then bicycled back to Seattle across the northern portion of the US. Through this experience she became the first person to circumnavigate the US this way. This is a wild, unique, and beautiful story of what a true adventure really means. Can you imagine achieving at the age of 16 what other dream their entire lives of doing and even then never take the first step toward embarking on the journey of their dreams? Our remarkable guest today knew from a very early age that she wanted to sail around the world, alone...in her own boat. It appeared as if everyone in her sphere were conspiring against her, to dash her dreams….well, I should say that her parents were very supportive, and encouraged her to put her thoughts into action. In fact, she was born in New Zealand, during a seven month sailing trip by her parents, spent the first five years of her life on at sea...was given her first boat at age six, a small dingy made for children…  She named her boat Guppy, all her boats have been named GuppyHer name is Laura Dekker. She'll be 26 on September 20th….she has a Dutch, German and New Zealand citizenship...truly a citizen of the world. At age 14, with a solo trip to England …..and back - departing from her home in the Netherlandsunder her belt and months, even years of experience alone aboard a ship….she announced her intentions to circumnavigate the globe, solo. Now, you know when you were a kid and you had this amazing idea and someone told you how dumb it was and somehow you agreed and gave up that dream, and suddenly the years go by and you wonder why the hell you ever listened to the doubeters in the first place?Well, Laura had many doubters, in fact the government f the Netherlands got involved, the Child Welfare Office objected, a family court judgment was obtained that placed Dekker in shared parental custody with the Council for Child Care who intended to stop her departure.Dutch naval law said a person under 16 wasn't allowed to captain a boat over seven meters long…. the Dutch court ended supervision of Dekker, and decided it was "up to the girl's parents to decide whether she can make the trip."[34] Dekker reported that she would depart "within two weeks".[35]Laura later commented about the authorities in an interview, saying "They thought it was dangerous. Well, everywhere is dangerous. They don't sail and they don't know what boats are, and they are scared of them."   14 years old!Well, she made, at the age of 16 became the youngest person ever to solo circumnavigate the globe….it took her two years, threw her into the international spotlight, she was awarded prestigious sailing awards, and everyone it would seem wanted a piece of her. When I caught up with her this summer and Laura Dekker agreed to this interview I wanted to ask her about her true calling….her now...and not trap her into telling the story of sailing around the world alone yet another time….there are dozens and dozens of videos and interviews on YouTube and beyond….and she has a book...Fast forward 10 years from her remarkable accomplishment and now Laura has devoted her life to inspiring children and youth with her LAURA DEKKER WORLD SAILING FOUNDATION. Aboard her new ship, also called the GuppYa 21 meter, 53 ton Scorpio 72 (stay tuned in this interview for the fate of the Guppy that she sailed around the world), The foundation provides programs for young people to develop life skills like team work, self confidence, responsibility, creativity, and leadership. The first solo circumnavigation of the world by human power by Turkish-American engineer Erden Eruç. In July 2007, Erden set out from Bodega Bay, north of San Francisco, aiming to become the first person to circumnavigate the planet solo, entirely under his own power—no motors, no sails, no means of propulsion other than his own strength. His plan was to travel across three oceans and six continents by boat, bike, and foot, more than 74 000 km or 40,000 miles in all, and climbing six of the seven summits, apart from Vinson Massif in Antarctica. www.meetingexplorers.com

During a journey to Nepal and the Himalayas, she first began to dream about climbing the world’s highest mountain herself. And – following four years of preparation – she accomplished the feat of becoming the first Swedish and Czech woman to reach the summit.   In 2005. Renata boarded her sea kayak at the quay in Lake Union in central Seattle. This was the beginning of an almost unbelievable adventure, circumnavigating the coast of the USA in 439 days, mostly in her kayak. The day on which she completed her journey, 15 September, has since been designated as ”Renata Chlumska Day” in Seattle.   For Renata, the thrills of adventure surpass the extreme efforts during her expeditions. The preparation process is a vital part of each new challenge: planning, financing, training, and getting the right equipment and teams together.   After each successful challenge, she focuses on the evaluation, documentation and use of her experiences to inspire others, not least as a very popular lecturer and speaker for companies and organizations, as well as schools, clubs and associations.   To Renata, a challenge does not have to be about climbing mountains or journeying into space. Adventure is always waiting around the corner, if you can recognise and accept it.    New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday and Thursday at 7am UK time - Make sure you hit the subscribe button so you don’t miss out.    The tough girl podcast is sponsorship and ad free thanks to the monthly financial support of patrons. ‘The only option I have is to keep going, and I am going to keep going’ Vedangi has always been active, playing football at a high level until she moved to the UK at 17. Wanting to challenge herself, she embarked on long bike trip across the Himalayan passes, a journey of around 800-900km. She completed this despite tough terrain, high altitude, and poor weather conditions. Beginning a Sports Management degree in 2016, she continued to train for her future cycling challenges. Following a stay with a stranger on a training cycle, she decided that day to cycle to John O’Groats; two and half weeks later she made it, and considered where to set her sights next. Vedangi decided she would circumnavigate the world by bike, aiming to beat the record and do it in the fastest time so far. Beginning her challenge in Australia, Vedangi set off by herself. The journey was not always plain sailing. Having been chased by grizzly bears, and hit by a mini bus, Vedangi faced her biggest challenge in Spain where she was knocked off her bike and robbed at knife-point by two men and thrown head first into a ditch. This left her concussed and having panic attacks as she continued her cycle. Throughout everything she never questioned that she would keep going, and never once thought of giving up. Grateful to be alive, she reached Australia and could claim the impressive accolade of being the youngest person to circumnavigate the world by bike. Once Vedangi had completed her challenge and returned home, she realised that university wasn’t for her and that what she really wanted to do was help to plan and manage other people’s expeditions. She now runs The Adventure Shed, a business that provides end to end expedition management services and aims to make adventure accessible for all. She hopes to inspire people to take action to take on their own challenges and push themselves in the way she has always done. - The Adventure Shed - Vedangi Kulkarni

The Law of Attraction and The Secret had very beautiful topics to cover. First, it was about our thoughts. That thoughts become things. Then we were taught about virtualisation. We were taught about monitoring our feelings for they reveal our thoughts. We will not throw away the baby with the bath water, but I am sorry to say that what the Law of Attraction teachers left out is the most critical. In this episode, we take a look at what was left out that you need to include in your pursuit of life and achievement. Listen to this.

158: Randall Reeves: Singlehander Ocean Sailor known for his Figure 8 Voyage, talks about his experiences at sea circumnavigated the America and Antarctica, Randall Reeves  Find out what is involved in Randall Reeves’s goal to be the first person to circumnavigate the Americas and sail to Antarctica by himself in one year? “Imagine the globe, if you would, in your hand, and you are looking right down at San Francisco, Figure 8 Voyage is an attempt to sail from San Francisco all the way south, all the way to the bottom of the world, down to the bottom of South America, make a hard left, go all the way around Antarctica, back to South America again, all the way up the Atlantic, way, way up to the Arctic into what we call the NorthWest Passage, make hard left there, across the top of Canada, Alaska. And back home to San Francisco, about 40,000 miles in one year.”   On this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, we talk with Randall Reeves, a Singlehander Ocean Sailor that is known for his Figure 8 Voyage. Randall discusses the trip that inspired his idea for the Figure 8 Voyage. “I invited my lovely wife down to LaPaz and talked to her about what it would be like to do this extra long voyage. How long would it take sweetheart? Well, it is going to take another year given distances and hurricane seasons. So, your one year voyage will become a 2-year voyage. Yes hunny, I’m afraid that’s what it is going to be. She thinks for a moment and says, well I think you should do that, which just shocked the hell out of me.”   What You Will Learn:   What was the Drake Passage like? “To sailors, Cape Horn is the Everest of sailing. It is, as you pointed out, the nastiest most difficult bit of water you can find. Part of the reason for that is that it is a very rugged and difficult piece of land sticking way, way, way down in the ocean, 56 degrees south. It is one of the furthest south pieces of land in Antarctica. Then Antarica has a large peninsula facing towards Cape Horn.” How hard was it when he attempted his first Figure 8 Voyage? “I met my first really big storm, it was right off of Cape Horn. I was about 500 miles west and got into a gale that had 50 knot winds gusting 70. We did ok through most of the gale but the last part of the storm the boat got knocked down. So, in sailor terms a knockdown is when the boat gets knocked down all the way over, 180 degrees, mast in the water.”  How do you get a boat upright again after a knock down? ‘Heavy displacement boats, they have a large keele made out of lead .There is a lot of weight underneath that hull, that white hull you can see above the water. The purpose of having all that weig., to keep the boat upright. So, t down there is to keep the boat stable. SO, a boat like mine, when it gets knocked over, it is a matter of seconds before it comes back upright again.” Randall Reeves explains one of the big challenges of the Figure 8 Voyage. “One of the challenges of the Figure 8 is I’m trying to do the entire thing in the year. I’m trying to be in the southern parts of the world in the southern summer and the northern part of the world in the northern summer. So, in the southern summer that is the best time to be there and there is no getting through the Arctic in the winter because it is frozen solid.”   What types of challenges did he experience sailing in Antarctica? “You are in a really alien environment. So, the oceans make up, what,  ⅔ of the planet? And you are in a part of the planet where the winds are high all of the time. The wind travels around Antarctica, west-east, it goes around and around and around the globe and it travels fast and it is cold. So, the seas are big. The air is cold. Everything you do is challenging.”     Witnessing Wildlife   What has stood out to him during his voyages as just breathtaking beauty? “In the north, during the NorthWest Passage, you will see walruses and polar bears and a lot of the big animals that a lot of people talk about. But, I think one of the most incredible animals for me is, as I alluded to earlier, is seeing the albatross. One of the real breathtaking things about being in the southern ocean is that you are surrounded by wildlife all the time.”   Life in the Seas During this episode of Finding Your Summit Podcast, the talk with Randall Reeves also includes what is needed aboard his boat. “It took me about two years to find the right boat for the Figure 8 Voyage. The boat I had was 30 feet long, plenty strong, but not fast enough and not big enough to carry enough stores and spare parts. Not only do you have to have your own supply of food and water but you're in a hardware store as well. If anything breaks, and a lot of stuff is going to break, you have to fix it with what you have.”    Links to Additional Resources: Mark Pattison: markpattisonnfl.com Emilia’s Everest for the Epilepsy Foundation: markpattisonnfl.com/philanthropy-wb/ Randall Reeves social media: Twitter Facebook The Figure 8 Voyage website: figure8voyage.com

This meant that women could vote in local and state elections, but not country-wide elections. 1901 President William McKinley assassinated. Visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York, half a year into his second term, US President William McKinley is shot twice by anarchist Leon Czolgosz. McKinley died from gangrene that had gone undetected in the internal wound. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was immediately sworn in as president. Czolgosz claimed to have killed McKinley because he was the head of what he thought was a corrupt government. Czolgosz was convicted and executed in an electric chair on October 29, 1901. The unrepentant killer's last words were “I killed the president because he was the enemy of the good people—the working people.” 1968 Swaziland Gains Independence From the British. Ralph Waldo Emerson is quoted for saying, "life is a journey, not a destination" Our guest, Isaac Gutierrez, talks about the events in his life that lead him to take that philosophy to heart after making the decision to circumnavigate the globe without the use of a plane. We talk about his experience in the military and how his perspective growing up as an immigrant in the US has shaped his views on current events and issues of cultural inclusion and awareness. Jeanne Baret was the first woman to circumnavigate the globe despite it being illegal for women to board French Navy vessels in 1766. When Bougainville was commissioned to sail around the world, he asked renowned botanist Philibert Commerson to join him. Commerson couldn't leave behind his lover and assistant, Jeanne, so they disguised her as a teenage boy...everything was going to plan until they arrived in Tahiti.

Have you ever imagined traveling around the world? Were you inspired by Jules Verne to pack your bags and set forth on a global adventure? Well David Mink has circumnavigated the earth six times, visited six continents and about 50 countries, and he is the current President of the Circumnavigators Club. I didn’t really get to go on vacations as a boy due to my situation living my cash-strapped single mom. As a result, I stayed in hostels, pensiones, and tents while I did the proverbial backpack-through-Europe-right-of-passage over my final summer as an undergrad, before I ever check into a hotel. So, my own personal wanderlust had suffered from pent up demand, and I wanted to learn how folks like David and over a century of circumnavigators have done it! In this wide-ranging episode (pun intended), we learn about the amazing history and legacy of the club? Its membership roster is a who’s who of notable and diverse members, and their Order of Magellan honorees are an exceptional crew of inspirational travelers and humanitarians. The Club’s Goodwill Connection serves as a world-wide network of helpful members aiding in the navigation of other’s travels along with learning about their philanthropic Foundation that provides travel-study grants for undergrads. This is an information and story filled episode that will likely spur you to get out your passport and set off on your next adventure, and who knows maybe like David, you too will circle the globe, a time—or six!

He may have had a GPS system named after him, but Ferdinand Magellan wouldn't have needed it during his trip around the globe back in the early 1500s. He only made it halfway, dying in the Philippines at the hands of natives who got sick of him asking for directions. But since it was his ship that eventually got back to Europe, he gets the credit. Oh well, Buzzkillers. Who cares about the details anyway?

Riaan Manser is a pioneering explorer, based in South Africa. He was the first person to circumnavigate the coast of Africa by bicycle, a distance of 37,000 km, through 34 countries over two years and two months. In July 2009 he became the first person to kayak 5,000 km around Madagascar, alone and unaided. Both journeys are covered in his books, Around Africa on My Bicycle and Around Madagascar on my Kayak. In 2011 he also circumnavigated Iceland in a two-man kayak with Dan Skinstad. Riaan then conquered the oceans with his wife, Vasti. They completed a journey, "Take Me 2 New York" that started in December 2013. They rowed from Morocco, Africa to New York City, USA in an ocean rowing boat alone and unaided. Their latest journey is the famous honeymoon trip where they rowed from California to Hawaii again alone and unaided a small ocean rowing boat. No Food For Lazy Man: No Food for Lazy Man™ is a charity organisation set up by Solo Adventurer, Riaan Manser, to provide disadvantaged children with a sporting chance at a brighter future. The No Food for Lazy Man™ trust identifies schools throughout the Province that are in dire need of assistance and supplies them with basic sporting equipment to ensure all our children receive the recreational stimulation necessary to build confidence, character and instill teamwork. For many of these children, the ability to take part in sport is all it will take for them to live out their dreams and aspirations. Manser likes to do things a little differently... he expects the children to give back to society in some way or another… For example, some children recently chose to do a "beach clean" as part of their payback. This is Manser's way of educating the youth that there is "no food for lazy man", and he hopes that in years to come these children might one day become the sporting heroes that other kids will aspire to follow, and he hopes too that they will also learn that things don't come free, and that we should give back where we can. The prefix circum- which means “around” and the Latin root word circ which mean “ring” both are influential in making up English words. For instance, the prefix circum- gave rise to the words circumference and circumstances, whereas the root circ gave rise to circle and circulation. Clearly a circumference is the bearing “around” a circle, whereas a circle itself is in the form of a “ring.”Like this? Build a competent vocabulary with Membean.
