Have you ever had a client exhibit behaviors that you just don't know how to approach? Dr. Jonathan Fernand has had experiences in the field across many settings that aid in his understanding on intervening with restrictive and repetitive behaviors. Restrictive and repetitive behaviors can mean a variety of behaviors, from high order (compulsive and ritualistic) to low order (self injurious and vocal/motor stereotypy). But when do these behaviors warrant intervention?Dr. Fernand reminds us that while every decision is contextual and depends solely on the individual, there are factors that contribute to deciding on the intervention process. Consider safety, health and wellness, community, and other lifespan barriers as indicators for intervention. Prioritize the need for intervention and differing methods with changes in skills and interests. It's also important to note that not all restrictive and repetitive behaviors need to be at zero levels if they can be enjoyed appropriately. This conversation is great for SLPs, who are often in situations where they feel like they are calling in the BCBA when things have gone too far wrong and can maybe do more to intervene preventatively. Dr. Fernand, like me, is an advocate for lifelong learning. He urges professionals to access a network of resources and lean on colleagues and mentors to learn and grow.   #autism #speectherapyWhat's Inside:What are Restrictive and Repetitive Behaviors? What does it mean for behavior to become a barrier to behavior? What behaviors warrant intervention? What are high and low order behaviors?Prioritizing and revisiting the best intervention process.Making contextual decisions for every client and behavior.Mentioned In This Episode:Dr. Jonathan Fernand on LinkedInJonathan K. Have you ever been asked to go out to a club or dinner with a friend on a Friday night...and there was a part of you that wanted to go and a part of you that wanted to stay home? Sometimes on Friday night...we are so exhausted and just shut down, but then equally want to get out of the house! Both of us spend so much time working from home...that sometimes we can feel physically torn about staying home or going out. Raise your hand if you feel the same way?! Today our guest, Maureen Clancy helps us understand that this is because that there are, in fact, different parts within us. These "parts" were created (typically in our younger years) to protect us from trauma because we didn't have the external support or tools to manage some situations which were too much, too fast, too soon or too long. And, sometimes these parts rule our lives and don't realize that we are now grown and capable women. When our survival response gets triggered, they can continue to try to protect us when our, sometimes to our detriment. Ladies...these "parts" or old narratives that you used in childhood to protect you no longer serve you in adulthood and could be the VERY things holding you back from living a life you love! What is your inner critic saying to you? Maureen Clancy is a licensed therapist, group therapy practice owner, and trauma expert who, for the past 21 years, has been helping women who've experienced childhood trauma heal the past and fully embody the present. She's the creator of the Gate Passages Framework, a structured, bottom-up approach to healing trauma. She's certified in a variety of healing modalities and in this episode, we spend time discussing Internal Family Systems, and her practice of combining therapy with Reiki, Tarot, and flower essences to heal the energetic body. She's presented on trauma and self-care at Rutgers University Graduate School of Social Work and Limerick Institute of Technology School of Social Care (County Clare, Ireland). This episode is soo juicy as Trinity comes to a fascinating realization about herself. And in this space, perhaps this recognition is the first step to her own healing journey. In this episode Maureen teaches us to: Recognize where we are in our "survival" response, which includes not only the (traditional) fight, flight or freeze...but, also fawn (I will survive if I make sure you're ok), collapse (there's nothing I can do here so I'm just going to exist), submit (I'm giving in and waiting for this to get over with) and cry for help. These were developed early in life as your strategy to help you survive (The "fawn" really resonated with Trinity) Understand the definition of trauma or that which is too much, too fast, too soon or too long, and how we've adapted to navigate it by developing different parts of ourselves to protect us from certain situations. Recognize the different "parts" within ourselves that try to protect us, in addition to our current, adult "Self". As we grow into adulthood, our parts continue to try to protect us, holding us back, even though we may no longer need protection. Today, we learn to show compassion to those parts, thank them for their "service" and reassure them we are grown and capable now. Acknowledge when our nervous system is disregulated and we're in hyper or hypoarrousal. In this state, access to our prefrontal cortex is inhibited. Move your body to help up-regulate you and pull you out of hyper or hypoarrousal. Take a walk, dance in your kitchen, do some yoga...this helps regulate your nervous system. Leverage a bottom-up approach (vs. top down) to healing trauma. Using your senses, such as smelling essential oils, and moving your body will open space to connect to our parts, while also turning off the survival response. Jane Lo, Singapore Correspondent speaks with Dr. P.J. Blount, Lecturer in Law in the School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University. Dr. P.J. Blount (Ph.D., M.S., Global Affairs, Rutgers University; LL.M., King's College London; J.D., University of Mississippi; B.A./A.B.J., University of Georgia) is a Lecturer in Law in the School of Law and Politics at Cardiff University. He has served as an adjunct professor for the LL.M. in the Air and Space Law at the University of Mississippi School of Law. Previously, he was a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Luxembourg, an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, and a Visiting Scholar at the Beijing Institute of Technology School of Law. He also completed an industrial fellowship sponsored by the Luxembourg National Research Fund wherein he split his time between SES and the University of Luxembourg research cybersecurity issues relevant to the space industry. Blount's primary research areas are international space law with a focus on space security and cyberspace law and governance. He has published and presented widely on the topic of space law and has given expert testimony on Space Traffic Management before the U.S. House of Representatives' Subcommittee on Space. His book, Reprogramming the World: Cyberspace and the Geography of Global Order, was published open access with e-International Relations Press in 2019. He is an editor of the Proceedings of the International Institute of Space Law and was formerly the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Space Law. He currently serves as the Executive Secretary of the International Institute of Space Law and is a licensed attorney with the State Bar of Georgia (USA). In this podcast, Dr Blount introduces the historical and political context of the Outer Space Treaty which was negotiated in 1967. Despite the technological advances since then, Dr Blount argues that the treaty, in his view, is technologically neutral, where the intent is for it to “apply to everything” and “embrace all sorts of technologies”. Nevertheless, technological developments force us to rethink our understanding of security. While cybersecurity adds a layer of complexity, he notes that “cybersecurity laws and regulations are not usually the answer to our problems in cybersecurity”. However, he stresses that, cybersecurity being a risk management process means there are legal implications. For example, for a university Cube Sat, he explains how cybersecurity may play a part in the licensing and authorising process – that is, the extent of cybersecurity and risk management plans could depend on its payload and orbital dynamics. On whether space sector should be designated as a critical infrastructure, Dr Blount advocates for more definitions, noting the potential for burdening such satellites as the educational ones with unnecessary regulations. Where laws provide few details in how to secure assets for space sector operators, Dr Blount suggests that standards such as those developed by NIST for Commercial Satellite Operations serve as actionable guidance. Recorded 27th June 2022, 10am London / 5pm Singapore

Hello and welcome to Bittersweet Symphony, a podcast where classical musicians share the bitter, the sweet and the bittersweet of life when the concert halls shut their doors and the audiences vanished. In this episode I'm chatting to Christopher Nery, principal bass trombonist with the RTE Concert Orchestra since 2009. He shares bitter memories of the anxiety caused by uncertainty, burnout, cabin fever and misinformation. His sweet memories are of the simple things, like weekly pizza parties with his children, trips to the recycling and the joy of DIY projects in his home. His bittersweet is of the home-schooling experience. Chris has worked with ensembles across Europe including Orchestre National de Bordeaux Aquitaine, Orquestra Nacional de Barcelona y Catalunya, Opera North, BBC Concert Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra and Irish Chamber Orchestra. In the USA he has performed with River City Brass, Pittsburgh Symphony and Sarasota Orchestra amongst others. From 2003-2015 he was Professor of Low Brass at the Conservatoire Perpignan Méditerranée in Perpignan, France and currently teaches bass trombone and euphonium at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin. He is a Buffet Groupe artist playing Courtois trombones and Besson euphoniums and has appeared as guest clinician/adjudicator at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique in Lyon, the Cork Institute of Technology School of Music, and most recently at the University of Miami, Florida. SONIC ACTS ACADEMY 2020 DESIGN EARTH: Rania Ghosn – Geostories 23 February 2020 – De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Architects Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy co-founded DESIGN EARTH to engage with geography in addressing humanity’s relationship to the Earth through architecture. From Monaco to Mexico City, their research develops projects around concepts such as hypothetical volcanos, the ‘Pacific Cemetery’ where satellites go to die and a methane aviary as waste disposal unit rendering gas pipes a forest for birds. Rania Ghosn (DESIGN EARTH) begins her lecture Geostories with the question: How might the geographic imagination convert into an image and narrative of the climate crisis? That is, not only as a calamity of the physical environment, but also as a predicament of the cultural one – of the systems of representation through which society relates to complex and unknown environmental futures. In Geostories, geographic fiction becomes a medium to synthesise different forms and scales of knowledge on technological externalities, such as oil extraction, deep-sea mining, space debris and a host of other social-ecological issues, and to speculate on ways of living with such legacy technologies on the planet. The collaborative practice DESIGN EARTH based in Ann Arbor, Michigan and Cambridge, Massachusetts and is led by architects Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy. DESIGN EARTH literally means ‘earth-writing’, deploying geographic aesthetics as a form of environmental speculation in the age of climate change. The practice received a Young Architects prize from the Architectural League of New York and DESIGN EARTH have been commissioned by the Venice Architecture Biennale, Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism and Oslo Architecture Triennale. Projects have been exhibited in international art spaces such as SFMOMA and Times Museum, Guangzhou and acquired by the New York Museum of Modern Art. Ghosn is an Assistant Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology School of Architecture + Planning and Jazairy is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at University of Michigan. Inclusion in the classroom has become a topic of discussion in recent years. Though all students deserve to be included, those with disabilities often get overlooked or cast aside. Many theories and ideas have surfaced in regards to this, but successful execution of inclusive education is seen few and far between. One school that has effectively integrated the inclusive model into each of its classrooms is the Hope Technology School. As a K-12 school - including a Vocational Education program and a developing high school called “Learning Curve” - HTS is the embodiment of implementing inclusive education. Russ Ewell sits down with students and educators from HTS to get their thoughts on what inclusion means to them, along with practical ways to execute inclusion using technology in the classroom.Episode ReferencesGraduate rates of students with disabilitiesIDEATeachthought on TTSAvaz FreeSpeechProloque4TextQuickTalkMore Assistive Technology ProductsGrowth Mindset - Carol DweckQuizlet

In this episode, Akshaya Kamalnath, incoming Lecturer at the Auckland University of Technology School of Law, discusses her article, "Corporate Insolvency Resolution Law in India – A Proposal to Overcome the ‘Initiation Problem’" forthcoming in the University of Missouri-Kansas City Law Review. She begins by discussing the history of India's corporate insolvency law, explaining how the experience of the Sick Industrial Companies Act of 1985 and the collection of statutes that regulated insolvency of limited liability corporations led to a distrust in the Debtor in Possession Model for bankruptcy. She then outlines the new law regulating corporate insolvency, the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, which transformed restructuring into a creditor-focused model and created a new efficient structure of initiating the insolvency process. However, she explains that the creditor-focused model of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code has led to a reticence on the part of corporations to initiate the process prescribed in law, as company directors often lose control of corporations to creditors.Kamalnath notes that this 'initiation problem' is due to the structure of many Indian companies, which are owned by family groups whose promoters that raised money during the corporation's establishment continue on to leadership positions within the organization. She notes that these promoters have few incentives to lose control of their companies, and are often part of larger groups that have great influence on the financial, governmental, and business sectors. As a solution to this problem, Kamalnath looks to the corporate law of Australia and the United States, finding that Australian corporate law has the alternate problem of excessive incentives for managers to enter the insolvency process. She finds a better model in American corporate law, proposing a "modified Revlon duty" upon managers to accept the highest offer for a company when soliciting bids in the pre-insolvency phase, regardless of organizational changes demanded by bidding firms. And she concludes that the Indian parliament has proven itself willing to amend gaps in corporate law, suggesting that future legislation could insert the "modified Revlon duty" into existing law regulating the duties of directors. Kamalnath is on Twitter at @Akamalnath.This episode was hosted by Luce Nguyen, a college student and the co-founder of the Oberlin Policy Research Institute, an undergraduate public policy organization based at Oberlin College. Tony was only the second African American to receive a bachelor's degree from Western Michigan University's prestigious Paper Science and Technology School. Upon completion of his degree, Tony worked for a number of years as a chemical engineer for a Fortune 500 company. It was during this phase of his life that he had a life changing interaction with an at-risk youth. This moment left such profound impression on him that he left both his corporate career (while nearing the completion of his first patent) and his graduate studies at the University of Chicago to work in the non-profit sector with the desire to make an impact on the communities around him. It was this work, which often included counseling groups and individuals that led Tony to begin studying human behavior with the intent or understanding what makes people tick, excel, and change. Tony Chatman delivers presentations that are an entertaining and impassioned balance of both science and practical insight. Tony breaks down tough topics such as unconscious bias, change management and leadership. He creates a new, stronger foundation for true leadership. Audiences leave focused and motivated to turn individual differences into business advantages. Currently, Tony serves as a board member for the Captain Phillips Lane Kirkland Maritime Trust. Tony recently completed his first book: The Force Multiplier: How to Lead Teams Where Everyone Wins and in 2018 he delivered his first TEDx talk – How to Stop Settling for Less.
