Ted Simon recently turned 93 years old, and for his birthday, our host, Jim Martin, sat down with him to discuss how a rider today could have a similar trip. Ted came up with some criteria anyone can follow for a real adventure. During the conversation, it was revealed that Ted may not have been alone for the entire trip as previously thought and he also shared how his clear idea of what he wanted from his trip led him to turn his back on someone close to him so that he could continue his journey alone. As I mentioned in the previous episode, I am about to begin a series of episodes that will have more of a free-flow format than the ones that have gone before. This is because I have a large amount of information that I have collected over the years which I consider to be extremely valuable when it comes to personal growth, and rather than try to build a context for each one that would be the theme of an entire episode, I am just going to put them out one at a time, without trying to format them into a general context. There are a couple of reasons for this. The first one is that I have found that every one of these ideas has been extremely helpful to me at some point in time, just the way they are. And they may be very helpful to you, as well. Also, if I don't put them out now, rather than serving to possibly help someone in their path of personal growth, they'll probably end up just being food for worms somewhere. And although the worms might appreciate the nutritional value of the paper, the ideas themselves will do the crawlers no good at all. That kind of stuff only works for human beings. So, before I begin, I'd like return to my own personal story and move it forward a little bit from where we left off in the last episode. I had mentioned that my interest in inner growth began when I heard the news that the Beatles were continuing their magical mystery tour by travelling to India to study meditation. Before I knew it, I decided to look into meditation and went to the Philadelphia Transcendental Meditation center and received a mantra to meditate with. The practice didn't really do much for me and my interest in inner evolution left me about as quickly as it came. But at this point, I want to underscore something important about what was happening within my overall intelligence. You may or may not be aware of the fact that I had a few extraordinarily metaphysical experiences surrounding the sudden death of my father. These experiences are detailed fairly extensively in my memoir, “Wilt, Ike and Me” and they were the subject of a few podcast episodes about a year and a half ago. To make a very long story very short this is the gist of what happened. With absolutely no background in this kind of thing at all, one night when I was in 11th grade, I had a clear and vivid dream that my father had died. I dreamt the events as they happened to me. It was quite a long dream, with several sequences, it was crystal clear and I could remember every bit of it. And then incredibly, it all happened the next night exactly as I had dreamt it, down to the finest details of who said what to me and when. Then, about six months later, I had another deeply vivid dream in which my father appeared to me and told me that he never really died. He said that there is no death and that it's just a public relations stunt that God came up with to get people to think about him. At the end of the dream, he noticed that I was wearing his ring He told me to give it back to him. I did and the whole room exploded into brilliant white light. Then back in real life, a few hours later, following my gym class, when I opened my locker and went into my wallet where I kept my two rings, his ring had disappeared. My other ring, my watch, my wallet with a ten-dollar bill in it were all still there. But inexplicably his ring was gone. It had vanished without a trace. Now, even though the details about these events were truly extraordinary in and of themselves, the thing that was important to my growth was the fact that they had happened at all. Underlying the shock and grief that came along with the sudden death of my father was a deep understanding that started to come over me, that was that there's more to this life than meets the eye. There's more to it than we've been told. I mean, how is it possible that in a dream, I clearly foresaw events that hadn't happened yet? What does that say about time and space and the so-called reality of life as we know it? Of course, this was a lot for a standard American 16-year-old schoolboy to begin to grasp, but it lit a deep desire within me to find out what the hell is going on around here. What am I doing here? What is the purpose for my life? Why was I born? What did I come here to do? You know, all those basic kinds of existential questions that we are generally warned to dismiss from our minds at all costs. There's no answer to them and they will just lead you down a never-ending rabbit hole of confusion. Well that may be true, but the fact was, I had no choice about asking these kinds of questions and I still don't. I still have to ask them. By the way, I've learned a lot since then and although there is still effort to be made, there is an enormous amount of difference between the effort of searching to find a gold mine and the effort of mining the gold once you've found it. Anyway, in the fall of 1971, suddenly some powerful events began to take place almost simultaneously. The first thing was that I heard about a unique Indian teacher who supposedly had a very evolved way of teaching. He was all the rave at the time, but I was really put off by the fact that the guy was only 13 years old. He was basically just a kid. I'll never forget it. I was in my first semester of law school walking down the quad at Temple University with my old friend and fellow student, Ted Simon. Ted was already very serious about the law. He studied hard and quickly became a major criminal lawyer, as well as the President of the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. I won't go into details about it here, but let's just say I went down a road less traveled. Anyway, I had a hot dog in my hand and was about to bite into it and suddenly saw a poster taped to a pole which said something like, “13 year old spiritual teacher has come to relieve you of your suffering.” I stopped dead in my tracks and just stared at it. “Whoever is promoting this guy is going to go bankrupt fast. Who the hell is going to believe that a 13-year-old kid is a spiritual teacher? What the hell can somebody that young know?” I asked Ted. I was so flabbergasted by the complete absurdity of the idea that it took me a few minutes to finally bite into the dog. Well, things went the surprising way they often do and within a few months, to my extreme surprise, I started taking this young teacher a bit more seriously. He was teaching a form of meditation that was supposedly quite powerful and in certain circles that I had become familiar with, he was gaining a serious reputation for having significant wisdom. That's a really quick overview, but how it actually happened is quite a story in and of its own right and I will probably tell it in a podcast episode one of these days. Anyway, this teacher's name was Prem Rawat and besides hearing a lot about him, I also got exposed to a few other sources of information that began to exert a strong influence on me in those days. And this kind of happened all at once. The first one was that a lot of people I knew had begun reading a book called, “Autobiography of a Yogi,” by someone named Parmahansa Yogananda. At some point, I got that book and couldn't put it down. I'll go more deeply into who he was and what his influence was on me at a later time, but his writings became a major source of inspiration to me. And they still are. At the same time, a lot of people were recommending reading a book called, “There is a River, the Edgar Cayce Story.”  I had never heard of Edgar Cayce before and the story of America's most documented psychic was another element that played a major role in my inner awakenings back then. The idea that someone could tap into a higher realm of consciousness and gain access to a wealth of knowledge that was otherwise unavailable was basically a mind blower. Another book that hit me pretty hard at the time was called “The Essene Gospel of Peace,” which was one of a four-part series that presented a deeply esoteric view point about God and religion. Along the same lines, it was recommended to me that I begin reading a book called “The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus the Christ,” which was supposedly channeled by someone named Levi. This book was truly incredible and I plan to present a few chapters of it down the road sometime. I began reading all of these books within a few months of each other and it was quite a powerful experience because essentially they all said the same thing. Prem Rawat hadn't written any books back then, but he was giving a lot of talks which also said the same exact thing. And the basic message which was common to them all was that – yes there is such a thing as God and it is omniscient, which means it knows everything, is omnipotent, which means that it is all powerful, and it is omnipresent, which means that it is present everywhere, throughout every molecule of creation and beyond. And the most important thing is that it is within every single individual and we are all born with the inherent ability to connect with it, expand and grow,  and eventually merge into it. And the successful performance of this merger of consciousness, which could also be termed, the ultimate surrender, was the purpose of our life, the very reason we were born here in the first place. And if we were able to accomplish this evolution of consciousness, we will be complete and able to have the highest experience of life possible or find heaven on earth while we are still alive, if you want to put it that way. This is the brass ring on this otherwise crazy looking merry-go-round we found ourselves on. And the most amazing bottom line element to me was that God is not some ultra powerful guy who lives ten zillion light years away and can only be approached after you die. No, all these sources taught that you can find the god presence within yourself and ultimately merge with it. The general term for it was “the indwelling god presence” and I had never been exposed to this kind of a concept before in my life. Like I said, all of this hit me at the same time within just a few months. I started practicing the meditation taught by the young teacher and I'm still doing it to this day. So, this has been quite a lot of information for one episode and I'm going to close it by relating to you one of the first notes I took from back then that was deeply meaningful to me. I was reading the transcript of a press conference that was held for Prem Rawat. Again, he was thirteen years old at the time. And by the way, as bizarre as the idea of such a young teacher seemed to me back then, in the east, great teachers who were child prodigies and began teaching at a young age does happen from time to time. The greatly venerated Yogi, Sri Ramakrishna was recognized as a master soul by the age of seven. The current Dali Lama was recognized as a master soul by the age of five and assumed full leadership duties at the age of fifteen. And there is currently a very young teacher who will apparently take his place at the appropriate time. I didn't know any of this back then and the reality is that it didn't really matter. I liked what the young teacher had to say and his approach seemed not only revolutionary but it was deeply meaningful. Anyway, at this press conference someone asked him, “Do you believe in God?” And he simply replied, “I believe in the God who put a smile on every baby's face.” That eleven-word sentence was one of the most beautifully profound statements I had ever heard, and I'm going to get into it more deeply in the the next episode, along with several  other things. But in the meantime, you may want to give that statement a little thought and see what it does to you. “I believe in the God who put a smile on every baby's face.” So, for now, keep your eyes, mind, and heart open and let's get together in the next one.

Brought to you by Show Notes What was the adventure or outdoor experience that sparked you to work in the Outdoor Biz? Wow, that's a good banger to start with. I guess for me, it was probably when I did my first travel, and I got my first taste of a real culture shock. I flew from Darwin, Australia to East Timor, and that was back when it wasn't its own country as part of Indonesia. And then that just kind of hit me hard, and it was just like so awesome and so amazingly invigorating all at the same time and a bit scary. And it was just like, I was like, you know, 21 years old and, but that planted the seed of travel, which has been with me for the rest of, you know, for the rest of my life so far.   And photography and storytelling, how did those come into your life? Yeah, so I was kind of at a crux in my life where I wanted to change what I was doing. I used to be a golf professional. Actually, I was a member of the Canadian Professional Golf Association. It was great because it was kind of one of those sports that you don't really, or careers that you don't really associate with the outdoors necessarily, but it kind of totally is. You're out there outside all the time. It kind of wasn't doing enough for my soul. Always when I traveled, I took photographs, you know, I had a little point and shoot, and then someone was looking at my photos, and they're like, oh, your, your photos are pretty good. They're like, way better than the normal stuff that we see from someone's travels or whatever. I was like, oh, thanks. And it kind of got the wheels spinning. So I enrolled in this program in Victoria, BC. It was called the Western Academy of Photography. It was like one of those 10-month intensive courses, and I was single at the time, and it was like, I'm a Pisces and apparently were creative. And before then, I didn't really have, there was no creative outlet for me, aside from maybe golf or whatever. But then when I got into photography, that was just like, it, I was bit, I was in, I was shooting every single day and just like shooting, and that's when we were like, this is back in early 2000, still Darkroom days. The dark room was open till midnight. We could go in there and just make our own prints and stuff. It was pretty cool. So I just let it go.   Your bio says you believe in passion, diversity, and the search for freedom outside. I'm most curious about freedom outside. Tell us what inspires you about freedom outside. The freedom really comes from my brother, cuz he was such a, he wasn't your typical traveler. Like he was the kind of guy that would get in the rickshaw and tell Robert to sit down, and he was gonna take the rickshaw for a while, and then he would take the dude out for lunch. So he was that kind of guy, and he was just, he really like, as cliche as it sounds, he really did live like full on. He lived each moment like it was his last almost, and he was just like one of those full-on guys. So that came over into me. You are a busy guy, tell us about RISE Outdoor Innovation Inc. That is another labor of love. Um, so one day, I was. On an annual paddle trip, a bunch of us, 20 plus, maybe 30 of us that year, uh, on a paddle trip down the Thompson River here. So we carry all our camping gear and have a great old time. And you know how it goes, you're camping with your spouse, got the chores to do, and it was my chore to take down camp that day. So I had to deflate the mattresses, you kneel on it, and then you lay on it, and you fold it up, and then you roll it again, and you do that, and then you find the stuff sack. If you can find the stuff sack and put it in there, then take the tent down. It was kind of raining, and I was a little bit hungover to be honest. And you know, you're kind of swallowed in all these like mountains of fabric trying to stuff things in StuffSack. And I was like; there's gotta be another way. This idea was in my mind to create a better mouse trap. And this idea wouldn't go away, so I started to act on it. I'm trying to bring the world the first rapid inflatable and inflatable outdoor sleep system with an integrated mattress. So everything is just taking away the hassle of setting up and taking down a tent. Because it takes approximately 18 to 30 minutes, depending on how well you even know your gear. To get the tent out, blow up the mattress, and get everything ready. Yeah. And I hope to, you know, it's based on avalanche airbag technology. Oh, interesting. So I'm gonna trademark the term 'push-button-pitch'. So you push a button, and it's gonna inflate in a few seconds, minute, I dunno. So I'm deep in the prototyping stage right now, bootstrapping my own brand, trying to build the brand, just trying to build some community.   Let's talk about the Rise and Sean Foundation. I love the outdoor field trips concept. What's Rise and Sean? Sean was my brother's name. So when Christina and I came back from our first major trip to Latin America, There was an incredible outpouring of help from people who help you daily. And there's no way in hell that you could, you know, pay everyone back or do something in return. So because my brother loved to travel and he loved kids. He didn't have kids, but he loved kids, and he loved to like goof around with them when he was traveling. So we're like, what can we do that would be educational but travel based? What we started back then was called the Sean Lawson Young Travelers Foundation, which is a bit of a mouthful.   So what we do is we take kids from developing nations on extended Outdoor, Educationally based field trips where we take between 10 and 30 kids. We take teachers sometimes, principals, cooks, and bus drivers and take them off on an adventure and a road trip within their own country so they can see what it is like to travel and learn from travel. What travel does to your mind, your heart, and your soul. We've done three of them now. They're, they're always such a, like, mind-blowing success from, from the minds of these kids.   Every kid has a, has a dream, right? Every kid should reserve the right to dream, have that dream, and be able to Dream. We just want to kind of fund and facilitate that and give them that spark to let 'em know that, you know, there is life beyond your village.   And Mountain Life Media, you produce and publish a lot of content. How did that get started? I couldn't be more grateful for what that's provided to my life, just in general. But what we do, our whole motto and our tagline is connecting with people from all walks of life to the magic of the mountains. And mountain Life was started 20 years ago by my business partner Glenn Harris. It's been pretty cool to see what we've grown. We've been able to do this in the media landscape in Canada mainly. And, you know, in print, we've got a really successful formula in the sense that we have a regional model where we concentrate our entire distribution, editorial, stories, and photography into a hundred-kilometer region zone or radius. And it's free. It's been pretty cool to see what we've been able to do in the media landscape in Canada, mainly. We've grown, and we've prospered, and we've thrived, and we've gone through the ups and the downs and all that stuff. But Our mountain lifers, as we call 'em, the people that pick up mountain life every time, we're very lucky to have a 99% pickup rate. So because the magazine is free, we recycle any mags, and we just hold back 1% for marketing and mailouts and stuff like that. So, the demand is there, and it's always been there, and the demand has been there for 20 years.   How about future Adventures? What exciting places are you going? The thing that was the biggest pain in the ass about this trip was the logistics. We had to ship our bikes from Vancouver to Dublin we actually shipped them on the plane, and that was pretty cool. It was expensive, but they were like right there when we arrived kind of thing. So then when we came back, our end point on this journey was Portugal and Lisbon. So, again, we had to go through that same nightmare. It's more expensive to ship things from Ireland to North America, so that was a more expensive bet. But they are almost in a container ship, and they'll be here in hopefully sometime in July. They take a long time. But as, yeah, so as for the next trip, we're like, well, we're never doing that again. The nice thing about being in North America is that you can point your wheels south and pretty much go as far as you want.   Do you have any suggestions and/or advice for folks wanting to get into creative work? My motto in life is, go for it. So I would just say, look for an internship somewhere that you can be exposed to something every single day. The beautiful thing about photography and digital photography now is that you can shoot as much as you want. There's no like paying for film and developing like it was back in our day; it was like 20 bucks a roll or whatever. So you spend a lot of time editing behind the computer. I would just say find someone you want to mentor you and just like ask questions. Ask questions, ask as many questions as you can, and just act, just do. Just go out there and do it.   If you were able to hang a huge banner at the front of one of the tradeshows, what would it say? Live it up. That's our mountain life tagline. Don't take life too seriously. Do what you wanna do. Do it well, share it with friends, and have a cold one after that.   Do you have any daily routines you have to keep your sanity and health, like meditation, exercise, walking the dog, etc? It's my 20 20 20 routine in the morning. So I'll do 20 minutes of body weight exercises. Twenty minutes of yoga and 20 minutes of meditation. And then I also do 20 minutes of reading, so that happens before I even check my smartphone. I try to do that, it's not every day, but that's what I try. Like you said, that kind of keeps me focused, gets me ready and keeps me in shape, and keeps everything going.   Do you have any favorite books or books you give as gifts? My favorite book of all time is called Jupiter's Travels. That's a book written by Ted Simon. He wasn't the first to ride his motorcycle around the world, but he was probably the first to write a really good, serious book on it. And that was a big motivation. In my life and, to continue on with these, these big motorcycle epics cuz he went around the world.   What is your favorite outdoor gear purchase under $100? I have two. One of them is like a Stanley one-click mug. So you just click the button and drink hot, cold beverages. It's just like that thing has been with me for so many places. And the second one is a duct-tape-wrapped Bic lighter. If I'm going away on a trip with six guys, six people, or ten people or whatever, I'll buy 10 Bic lighters. And I'll pop 'em all in a bunch of duct tape. So that if you ever need duct tape, you can have it. And you also have the lighter, which also helps you not lose your lighter so much. Cause it's kinda got that grip on it,   Is there anything else you want to say or ask of our audience? I would love your support in checking out my book, Inside the Belly of an Elephant. If anyone needs an introduction more than I am capable of coming up with, it's Jacqui Kennedy. A political motorcycling pioneer who had ridden the Swiss Alps carving up Ducati motorcycles on a scooter, been nearly everywhere in Australia on our beloved and familiar Postie bike (A Honda CT110), and shared amazing stories about roads and places she's travelled along in the footsteps of amazing adventurers that existed long before Ted Simon thought about jumping on a bike. In this very special episode of Ride and Talk, we celebrate the 90th birthday of Ted Simon – one of the original adventure motorcyclists. Ted has been inspiring thousands of us to travel on two wheels ever since his iconic Jupiter’s Travels book was published in 1973, detailing his 125,000 km round-the-world motorcycle ride over four years. Ted repeated this amazing feat many years later at the age of 70, this time on a BMW R 80 GS Basic, telling the story of his second incredible journey in his book Dreaming of Jupiter. Ted seldom gives interviews these days but was happy to chat with Andy Dukes about how the world has changed during his lifetime of adventure. We sincerely hope you enjoy this podcast. Ted Simon has moved to France and started his next motorcycle adventure, but in a different way. What he's doing offers a unique opportunity to learn something from a motorcycle legend and writer. Also in this episode, Aaron Steinmann chose to ride his KTM 500 EXC in New Zealand and then in South America to Oregon, not your usual adventure motorcycle, but then again, isn't every bike an adventure bike? Ted Simon Opens Writer's Retreat in France After living in California for over 35 years, Ted Simon, author of Jupiter's Travels, has purchased a house in France and opened a writer's retreat. His new home has ample room to accommodate aspiring writers, film makers and artists, and maybe even a traveler passing through. He's always had a foot in France, having gone there for the first time after the war, on a bicycle and then later living in France, so the move back to France was something he knew would happen sooner or later. Ted is soon to be 86 years old, and while back in California, he had been thinking of what he wanted to do with his time in his dotage, how he could share what he’s learned over the years with others. He thought that he would like to encourage people to write or document their trips so that others can hear what is going on in the world, and to help writers get their books published. So, he came up with a plan to go back to France and to open a writer’s retreat. He put up most of his own money, and with the help of some generous people who donated the balance of what he needed, he purchased the house. The writer's retreat is in the South of France, not far from the Mediterranean Sea. The village of Aspiran, is located in the Hérault Valley, and has been settled as far back as the Gallo-Roman times. About 10 years ago, a Roman winery dating back to 10 AD was found in Aspiran, believed to be the earliest commercial wine operation in France. In the middle ages, Aspiran became the property of the Aniane Abbey, and within an enclosure, the village of Aspiran grew, with four doors allowing entry in to the French commune. You can still see two of the doors that were used in those times. Between the 1400's and 1600's houses were built, and over the centuries the village spread out of the walls, vineyards grew larger and wine growing became the mainstay of Aspiran. And to this day, it is still known as a wine village producing both red and white wines. Aspiran sounds like the perfect backdrop for a writer's retreat, what better inspiration than a medieval village, with a mixture of the old and the new? And why go to a writer’s retreat, let alone Ted Simon’s? In our modern times, we are inundated from the left and right by technology, which can be a good thing, with information at our finger tips. But, it can also be a huge distraction. We are available to anyone around the clock, with easy access to text messaging, emails and social media. And this can make our life hectic, taking away or disrupting us from focusing on writing or creating. It can be tough to make the time, when others may not understand your need to throw yourself in to your work. At a writer’s retreat you can immerse yourself in your creation and explore the possibilities. And the special thing about Ted Simon’s retreat is the support of a writer who wants to and is willing to share his experience and knowledge to help other writers. Although the idea of the writer’s retreat was specifically intended for Jupiter’s Travellers, Ted is open to any one who is writing or has an idea for a book, a film, or artwork. He encourages those interested to get in touch with him through his website, have some conversation back and forth with him, and see if you’re a good fit. To live with Ted for a time in this special place, with the encouragement of an accomplished writer and traveler would be an exceptional opportunity, perhaps the chance of a lifetime. To find out more about Ted Simon’s writer’s retreat go to his website at http://jupitalia.com/. Ted Simon Foundation: Jupiter’s Travellers: http://jupiterstravellers.org/ KTM 500 EXC Long Distance Ride Aaron Steinmann’s bike of choice for a trip through New Zealand and then from Chile to Oregon, and on to Alaska, is the KTM 500 EXC, a bike that many say is a street legal dirt bike, an enduro which is an unusual choice for a long distance trip. But, despite being designed as a high performance and high maintenance bike, it was the best choice for Aaron, and he’s been pleased with the ride. Riding through South America is a popular choice for many adventure motorcyclists and Aaron shares some stories about border crossings, talks about taking the Stahlratte around the Darien Gap, and how he handled the frequent maintenance that the KTM requires. This is another example that the perfect motorcycle for adventure travel, is whatever you like. http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/new-zealand-to-oregon-on-a-ktm-500exc.1181912/ This Week’s Show Sponsors: Support the show sponsors that help bring ADVENTURE RIDER RADIO to you. https://www.pensamientovisual.es/simon-sinek-grandes-lideres-inspiran-accion/ ¿te gustan las charlas TED y quieres sacarles el máximo partido?

Between 1440 and 1450, Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. But, history shows that printing has been around long before Gutenberg's invention. As early as 220, the Chinese were block printing, putting ink on wooden blocks and pressing them on cloth and then hundreds of years later, on paper. Before the press was invented, Europeans either painstakingly copied written word by hand or used a method similar to the Chinese block printing called Xylography. Both were laborious and time consuming, and because of this, book choices were limited and costly. But, it was Gutenberg who facilitated books being mass produced throughout Europe at a fraction of the cost.  So, it's with thanks to Gutenberg that we have so many books available to us to learn or to immerse ourselves in for pleasure. Authors can take us on adventures, to the places they have been, describing the sights, sounds and smells in such vivid detail that we feel we are there, experiencing it for ourselves. We also read inspirational books that teach us to appreciate life, to feel good and get the most out of it we can. And books that teach us about things, show us how-to or teach us some much needed skills. For going on to 2000 years, humans have been reading the written word. We are so fortunate to have books easily available to us, to keep a book on the shelf to read over and over again or to refer to when we need to know something. There's something special about holding a book in your hand and turning the page. Or, the next best thing, for those of us limited in space, or travelling, or just trying to keep costs down, are downloadable eBooks. Or if you are tight for time, you can listen to someone read a book on CD or download it to hear it.  And, of course, since motorcycles are our passion and yours, we have been lucky to have some fantastic authors on our show and have compiled a list of some of these authors. But, there are many, many authors out there who we haven't had on the show, who have written valuable, informative or just plain entertaining books. Peruse your local book store, or check out some authors websites. Pick a book, or two, and put up your feet and take a trip to South America, India, Africa, Europe or wherever your heart desires, plan a motorcycle adventure, or learn a thing or two about riding or repairs. Forty years after its debut, The Mary Tyler Moore Show remains one of the most beloved and successful television sitcoms of all time. But Jennifer Keishin Armstrong‘s Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted: And all the Brilliant Minds Who Made The Mary Tyler Moore Show a Classic (Simon and Schuster, 2013) isn’t a simple episode recap. Rather, it’s a deep excavation of the show’s history from the perspective of the cast, the producers, a fan, and- perhaps most fascinating- the writers. You might ask, How is this biography? It is because, ultimately, Armstrong is writing about lives- the lives of the people involved in the show, the lives from which they pulled their material, and how their lives together, often haphazardly, to produce extraordinary TV. The Mary Tyler Moore Show depicted a woman’s work life, so it’s not too surprising that Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted does the same. However, the workplace that emerges is a revelation: with men recognizing the value of women’s stories and actively seeking women for the writing staff; with women writers mining their own lives for material and producing scripts that incorporate the everyday experiences of women, which were- at that time- seldom represented on TV. We remember The Mary Tyler Moore Show because it was well-crafted and funny. But, as Mary and Lou and Rhoda and Ted reminds us, the show came about in an environment that promoted equality and where the gifts of women were encouraged. Such environments are, sadly, still rare.
