This is the first episode in a series of four podcasts made in collaboration with Redtorch, the research and creative agency that's been at the heart of Olympic sport for over 20 years, working for many of the key international federations. We've used Redtorch research insights several times on the podcast because they ask really good questions that seek to break the walls between the elite performance side of the industry and the participation, retail and sporting goods sectors. The idea for this podcast came from a conversation with Jonny Murch, Redtorch CEO, about a peculiar problem, which has a several different applications. It's about why the sports industry seems to find it so hard to get its message out to policy decision makers. This was a point reinforced in our recent conversation with Tracey Crouch, the former UK Sports Minister. She said, there is no social problem for which sport can't provide an answer. So why then doesn't government or other powerful groups listen? Why is sport not more central to decision making process when it comes to questions such as the health of the nation, the cost of the NHS or the obesity time bomb? Where is sport's voice at the top table of decision makers? Why isn't there a more powerful and coordinated lobbying group for the sports industry, in the way there is for other industry groups, such as pharmaceuticals, Big Food, oil or automobile? Myself and Jonny Murch are joined in this first episode by two people from a different part of the sports industry.Celine Del Genes is Global Chief Customer Officer at Decathlon, the giant sports goods retailer.Emma Zwiebler is a lawyer and a former Team GB professional international badminton player who is CEO of the World Federation of the Sporting Goods Industry, Visit www.redtorch.sport to learn more or call Redtorch CEO Jonny Murch on +44 7989 514 912 for a friendly chat with one of the industry's most respected marketers.Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport.

Former government minister Tracey Crouch has joined the list of MPs who've said they won't be standing at the next general election. She won the former Labour seat of Chatham and Aylesford in 2010 and has turned it into a healthy majority of more than 18,000 for the Conservatives. A self confessed 'sports nut', in 2015 she attained her dream job as sports minister and oversaw the government's football governance review. In 2018 she resigned in protest at the government's 'unjustifiable' refusal to speed up plans to curb controversial fixed odds betting terminals. Four years ago as the pandemic hit, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and following treatment went on to raise £153,000 for cancer charities. She joins Emma Barnett to talk about her decision to leave politics and her plans for the future. Yulia Navalnaya, the widow of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny who was announced dead in a Russian prison last week, has directly accused the Kremlin of poisoning and killing him and has vowed to continue his fight to change Russia. Someone who has been following this story intently is Marina Litvinenko, the widow of Alexander Litvinenko, who exposed corruption in Russia and died in a London hospital in 2006 after ingesting tea which contained radioactive polonium. The European Court of Human Rights found Russia was responsible for the killing of Mr Litvinenko in 2021. Marina joins Emma. Can you have a true friendship or relationship if one of you has more money than the other? Novelist Kiley Reid dominated bestseller lists with her debut, Such A Fun Age, which skewered white liberal guilt. Her new book, Come And Get It, returns to themes of race, class, and above all money. Set on a campus in southern America, it follows students and academics whose behaviour is shaped by money. Kiley joins Emma in studio.Women get more gain from exercise than men. That's the suggestion of a new study of 400,000 people. 140 minutes of moderate exercise a week reduced women's risk of premature death from any cause by 18% compared with being inactive. Men needed 300 minutes of exercise for a similar gain. Joining Emma to discuss is Baz Moffat, former Team GB rower and co-founder of The Well, an organisation that works to challenge the status quo for women in health, fitness and sport.

So this is a timely conversation about the economics of the Premier League, the power and limitations of the CEO's job and the potential impact of government regulation following the Tracey Crouch review in to football governance. Fox's career has mixed high end football with brand marketing. Before Villa, Fox led Arsenal's commercial team under CEO Ivan Gazidis following a marketing career at PepsiCo and Nike. MPs vote for tougher mask rules, Cross Question and Tracey Crouch takes your calls Joining Iain Dale on Cross Question this evening are Conservative MP Damian Green, Baroness Jenny Jones of the Green Party, comedian and podcaster Francis Foster and Anand Menon, Director of UK in a Changing Europe.
By any measure, these are turbulent times for English football. The collapse of historic clubs like Bury and Macclesfield, the foiled Super League plot and the Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle United are all symptoms – many say - of a sport losing touch with its fans. We're joined by Tracey Crouch, whose fan-led review contains potentially game-changing proposals for the way football clubs are financed and run. We also speak to Brentford's Stewart Purvis, the only fan-elected director of a Premier League club as we ask whether stricter ownership rules and more fan engagement will help the game rediscover its soul or risk damaging its global appeal. Panel: Sarah Mulkerrins, Dan Roan, Nesta McGregor, Henry Winter Producer: Sam Sheringham
The United Mates Keitel and Joe are joined in the build up to Tracey Crouch's imminent report on football governance by Director of Advocacy for Fair Game and Grimsby Town fan, Mike Baker. Mike is working directly with politicians in order to establish an independent regulatory body that can fairly oversee English domestic football operations and protect the respective traditions and heritages of clubs up and down the country.
We've always been told to beware of strangers...but it turns out that talking to strangers is a proven way to make us happier and healthier. In this life-affirming conversation, I chat with veteran journalist Joe Keohane, author of the brilliant new book "The Power of Strangers: The Benefits of Connecting in a Suspicious World". At a time when many of us are retreating into our phone screens and human beings are becoming more detached from each other, Joe's message is more important than ever. Loneliness has been described as "one of the greatest public health challenges of our time" (in the words of Tracey Crouch, the first UK government-appointed minister for loneliness). You'll hear Joe explaining what we have to gain by starting up a conversation with a stranger - and practical, joyful, simple ways to connect with others. Even if you don't feel confident of your social skills, this conversation will leave you empowered to connect with others in a way that makes you feel good about yourself. This conversation is very powerful and may cause you to feel better about humanity and the world we live in. Let me know what you think! Former Government Minister Tracey Crouch is the kind of MP who restores your faith in politics. Authentic, no-nonsense and, as she puts it, determined to stay the same person who occasionally goes to the supermarket in her slippers. In this episode she talks us through the crises she’s faced in politics and her personal life, including a diagnosis last year with breast cancer. The Spurs loving former Sports Minister tells us how she managed that crisis with a pragmatic approach driven by perspective, a focus on the positives and a determination to ‘max out on life.’ In this episode Tracey also fights her way through a few unexpected bangs and crashes … caused by her cats coming in and out of the cat flap. Tracey is, literally, unflappable. Bags of lessons here for anyone facing their own challenges.Tracey’s Crisis Cures:1. Football: “I love it. It’s a real distraction. Although, I don’t feel so relaxed by football when I’m actually in the stadium…”2. My allotment: “I find my mind can completely empty of any stress or trouble when you’re sat digging over a bed.”3. Reading: “I love reading children’s books. I love going back to a time when things were just simpler. We should all find the time to sit quietly in the corner with Stig of the Dump.”Show Notes:Seemingly devoid of the usual politician’s ‘how will this play?’ break on her conversation. Tracey is so utterly authentic and genuine. From the reasoning behind her shock resignation from government to the trauma behind her cancer diagnosis, Tracey showed herself to be the right kind of team player. Or, as she put it brilliantly, “I’m a Spurs fan who doesn’t stand up because they hate Arsenal.”Tracey’s no-nonsense approach to her cancer diagnosis last June focused on the positives, the importance of perspective, exercise and mindfulness. This week she’ll begin professional counselling recognising that it’s often at the end of treatment that anxiety can really begin. My bet is that Tracey will be back in government pretty soon and it’s quite likely to be around the cabinet table.I’m sure that that girl from Kent whose resilience first developed as a latchkey kid will do brilliantly. Why? Because she is actively determined not to let politics change who she is. Or as she puts it “I want to be a mum, a wife, someone who occasionally goes to the shops in their slippers and someone who likes to shout obscenities at the referee”. One of Labour's most gifted politicians tells Matt about growing up as the son of another huge Labour talent, Tony Benn, and about the moment where their politics started to diverge. This is a great mixture of the personal and the political: Hilary talks about his central role in holding the government to account over Brexit - and the principles that should underpin the UK's role in the world. Have you ever wondered what resigning from government actually involves? You're about to find out. Tracey Crouch resigned from Theresa May's government over a delay to a crucial change in gambling policy and she explains why and how she departed. It was a brief that Tracey loved and she shares her experience of being a female Conservative sports minister and how her love of Tottenham Hotspur led to a tense exchange with Arsenal fan Jeremy Corbyn. Tracey was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2020 and tells Matt about her experience of being a politician with cancer, receiving treatment during a pandemic and the challenges of taking part in Parliamentary proceedings. Iain talks to the popular Conservative MP Tracey Crouch about her life before politics, how she got elected, being Sports Minister and the importance of family life. And she nearly reveals for the first time how she voted in the European referendum. And we find out whether she would give up a cabinet job as Secretary of State for DCMS to play one game for her beloved Tottenham Hotspur.
In a lengthy interview we spoke to former Minister at DCMS about the issue of gambling. We covered why the push to cut stakes on FOBTs came about and why the delay in implementing a stake change meant she felt she had to resign. We talked about the issue of gambling advertising on Television and whether its necessary in order to fund sports, and whether the age at which people can gable, including the lottery and scratch cards needs to rise to 18. The issue of future regulation was touched on as was what timescale this may take, and what industry could do to work with Government. We finally looked at whether the former Minister was ready to return to the front benches in what is likely to be an imminent reshuffle. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/toryradio/message

She has rebelled on issues from press regulation to fox hunting; and served as a sports minister until last year until she resigned over the government's stance on fixed odds betting terminals. In this episode, Tracey Crouch tells Katy about being the only student Tory in Hull, swearing at Philip Hammond, and why she's never told anyone what she voted in the Brexit referendum. Former British sports minister Tracey Crouch MP joins SportsPro editor at large Eoin Connolly to share her thoughts on the industry. Crouch, who has taken on a role as a senior adviser to London-based communications agency The Playbook, explains why her objection to a delay on restrictions on fixed-odds betting terminals on UK high streets led her to resign her post, and gives her wider views on the role of gambling in British sport. She also recalls her experiences of working in government, from the reality of her remit to the challenges of securing funding in an era of austerity, and the likely impact of Brexit on sport. And as a landmark decade of major events continues in the UK, she discusses the evolution of the sports business, the role of the public sector, the need for governance reform to reflect challenges like athlete safety, and the one sports job she would take if offered.
Your values and principles determine your behaviour and often your success. This week, Simon sits down with Tracey Crouch MP, who resigned as Sports Minister in November 2018 over "delays" to a crackdown on maximum stakes for fixed-odds betting machines. She was widely praised for sticking to her principles, even though it cost her her 'dream job' in government. Tracey is also a qualified football coach, and in this episode they explore how values and principles are intimately related, and how sport can help develop them. They also discuss how values have gone awry in the gambling industry, how Westminster and top-flight football could set a better example, how you can instill values in children through sport and why getting them active in school is important. They also get into mindfulness and how sport can help your mental health plus Tracey throws in some gardening tips for good measure, but is left unconvinced about the benefits of milk kefir.
-----> Click here to support the podcast and keep it free! Support us via Patreon! Why are we talking about this? Tracey Crouch was just appointed the U.K.s minister of Loneliness. Loneliness is a huge growing public health issue in most developed countries ⅓ of older Americans report feeling lonely and isolated This has long term health consequences including function decline and increase risk for heart disease, stroke, dementia, insomnia (and we know what that does!). Individuals without meaningful social relationships are twice as likely to die from all cause mortality. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE SO RISKY?! “It’s proven to be worse for health than smoking 15 cigarettes a day, but it can be overcome and needn’t be a factor in older people’s lives,” Mark Robinson, the chief officer of Age UK, Britain’s largest charity working with older people Higher risk populations: new parents, children, disabled people, refugees Dr. Holt-Lunstad at Brigham Young, who has analyzed 70 studies encompassing 3.4 million people, said that the prevalence of loneliness peaks in adolescents and young adults, then again in the oldest old. people can be socially isolated and not feel lonely; they simply prefer a more hermitic existence. Likewise, people can feel lonely even when surrounded by lots of people, especially if the relationships are not emotionally rewarding. But can affect ANYONE at any time. I have felt many times in my life and still do at times. Why do we have this problem No mix between young and old generations (retirement is just bad for most people!) Social Media and the FOMO Working too much to just pay your bills or afford luxury items Abraham Maslow (psychologist) considered the most basic of needs — warmth, food, shelter, security and a sense of connection. (he later added the concept of transcendence) Physiological Needs Safety Needs Social Belonging (or lack of) Esteem Self-ActualizationThe Challenge It's hard to admit you feel Lonely (it's embarrassing) Often in the ER we see physical complaints even though there might be a more pressing issue like loneliness underlying this What do we do??? If YOU are lonely Don’t blame yourself Acknowledge the feeling. Careful not to distract with unhealthy behaviors. Online groups can be good and bad Meet-Up groups Church if that is for you Clubs Reaching out to family Reaching out to a medical professional If You are NOT LONELY Recognize many are and reach out Especially older folks We can learn a lot by making friends with older folks https://www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/2018/12/28/misery-anton-chekhov-jay-baruch https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/17/world/europe/uk-britain-loneliness.html https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/11/well/mind/how-loneliness-affects-our-health.html https://www.simplypsychology.org/maslow.html https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3303190/
Speeches from Liz Truss, Tracey Crouch, Margaret Hodge, Geoffrey Cox, and David Lammy. To hear more, see Mr Steerpike's report of the evening. Presented by Fraser Nelson.
You are probably not familiar with the name Tracey Crouch. She is the answer to an epidemic recently identified in the U.K. – Crouch is the official “Minister for Loneliness.” There has been a general decline in happiness amongst Brits for some time – especially amongst the elderly. There is a relationship void for millions of people and it’s not only happening across the pond. The CDC reported the suicide rate in America has risen 25% between 1999 and 2016. The most common reason for taking one’s life is relational problems leading to feelings of isolation. The more connected we are technologically, the less we feel connected in meaningful relationships. The desire for hope and joy is an ever-increasing need. In John chapter 16 the disciples are in need of joy and of course, Jesus knew it. They were full of sorrow knowing Jesus is headed for the cross. This is why he gives them the path to joy by reminding them of what comes after the cross. “You will see me again.” And what a sight it will be! They will witness the resurrected Jesus and their sorrow will be turned into joy. The same is true for us. So here’s how you get more joy: You don’t have to ask for it, it’s already there. All you have to do is think on it, contemplate what Jesus has done for you on the cross. “Did you really do that for me?” According to Hebrews 12:2 the answer is ‘yes’ because we are Christ’s joy and nothing can take that away!
Changing Politics is back for a second run, and as the nights draw in and the temperature drops journalist Marie Le Conte and comedian Gráinne Maguire turn their attention to the issue of homelessness. The government currently does not keep figures on how many homeless people die each year, and this is something that needs to change. They speak to Melanie Onn MP, who was homeless at 17 and is now campaigning for the government to invest the time and effort to reduce homelessness that was invested in the early 00s, and to Maeve McLenaghan from The Bureau for Investigative Journalism, who has been working out what the numbers may actually be. And as ever, Marie and Gráinne have a small, practical step you can take which would make a real difference to the problem. They also discuss the week's news, including Arron Banks's troubles, Tracey Crouch's resignation, bullying MPs and a shit-ton of hospitality. You can find us on Twitter @ChangingPoliPod, and on Facebook @changingpol. Iain & Jacqui mark the first anniversary of the For the Many podcast, but the celebrations are tinged with sadness. They analyse Tracey Crouch’s resignation, look back on the budget, wonder if David Cameron really wants to return to front line politics, as well as look at the latest Brexit developments, the US midterms and question if Andrew Marr was right to invite Arron Banks onto his programme. Lots of excellent listener questions too. Smut quota: Almost non existent.

Well, THANK YOU High Lowers - last week's episode pushed us over 2 million downloads and up to No.3 on the iTunes podcast charts. The mailbag was also bulging this week: some helpful kind corrections; some not-so-helpful - and we've got a little something to say on that....This week we discuss the results of The ONS's report into loneliness, which has revealed that - contrary to popular belief - it is not pensioners who are society's most lonely, but 16-24 year olds. Is social media to blame? Has celebrity replaced community? And what will Tracey Crouch do about it?Also today, we talk about former Everton footballer Neville Southall who has been lending his Twitter platform (with its associated 127,000 followers) to minorities less privileged than him. Pretty great, huh? Well, apparently not. We talk about criticism, the liberal echo chamber and why curiosity is something to be prized not derided. Ultimately, we could all be a bit more Neville. And on a lighter note: there's Cardi B; the fragrance that ‘smells like' Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding; why Cynthia Nixon hates it when Big builds Carrie a wardrobe; and Dolly's drunken obsession with voice notes.Use an exclusive discount to get £10 off your first Treatwell booking with HIGHLOW10.
