This week I had the pleasure to talk to Christina Aragon. She is a 9x All American for Stanford, 3rd in the 1500 at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She went on to run in USA Championships and recently signed a pro contract with Bowerman Track Club.  Christina talks about her start with running and gymnastics. Then how she balanced the two in high school. She also talks about how her background in gymnastics has helped her with her running. We talk about her time at Stanford and some of her best memories. We also talk about some of her struggles, like a coaching change and dealing with injuries. She talks about cross training and swimming to help deal with them and manage her running load. Christina then talks about signing with Bowerman Track Club. She talks about taking her time with the process and finding the place that works well for her. She talks about the excitement about walking into Hayward Field on a weekly basis (even though it's a Stanford rival). It was a fun conversation that I hope you enjoy this week. I certainly enjoyed it. As high school cross country reaches championship season, I was able to compete in my first USATF cross country race as a master. It was a different feeling. But I encourage you to think about your training, your races, and put yourself out of your comfort zone. I learned something from it and I think you will as well. Enjoy the marathon season, dress in layers, and keep running, New Mexico.

Celeste and Jennifer talk about Jenn's journey throughout her 18 shows leading up to her pro card win, discussing what changes were made during both preps and off seasons that led to Jenn's success. Jenn talks about how her stage confidence grew with her experience which grew most after finding her current coach, Shane Heugly. Jennifer opens up and shares her struggles with anxiety and how she realized one of her medications caused her to gain and hold onto 20lbs, despite the efforts she was putting into her diet and training to get ready for stage. She talks about how she manages her anxiety now given that she prefers not to use traditional medicine as a means to help mitigate her symptoms. Jenn also highlights challenges outside of her mental health battles she had to overcome to prove to herself she was capable of competing. Jennifer mentions her experience at nationals in Orlando and how she felt that show was her “alley oop,” or her time to succeed. She highlights how one can be both a competitor and a work in progress when it comes to mental health and identity, and how working with a therapist helped her through that. Jenn also dealt with adversity in a relationship when her boyfriend at the time wanted her to take a year off of competing, which led Jenn to realize she should never let her passions take a back seat because of the opinions of others. Celeste mentions the importance that bodybuilding has in teaching competitors patience instead of instant gratification, leading her to ask Jenn to elaborate on her lengthy journey to becoming a pro. Jenn shares how she feels bodybuilding has changed over the years in regards to the science behind prepping and all that she personally has learned throughout her preps. “I’m pretty close to living the dream right now.” What do you do when you can't decide whether you want to go pro as a runner, or pursue your dream of being a registered dietitian? For Maddie Alm, the answer was "do both." Maddie lives in Boulder, CO, where she trains with Team Boss (coached by Joe Bosshard) and is the owner and founder of Fueling Forward, a sports nutrition consulting business. She's a former All-American from UC Boulder, and was a two-time USA Championships qualifier. Today, she's chasing a 5K qualifier so she can compete at the U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials this summer. (She recently ran personal bests in both the 3K and the 5K, so things are looking good.) And when she's not chasing down her running dreams, she's working with athletes to help them improve their relationships with food. On this episode, Maddie talks about what her training is like right now, and talks about experiencing her first year being fully healthy since college. She talks about building physical and mental toughness, and shares what failure means to her. Plus, she talks about entrepreneurship during a pandemic and shares the five foods she recommends for all runners. SPONSOR: AfterShokz — Visit ontherun.aftershokz.com for 15% off wireless headphones. “I always tell people that your consistency is going to put you on the right side of that thousandth of a second, you know? It comes down to that. And so every little thing compounds. Don't ever think that thing you consider at that moment is not going to matter.” - Mechelle Freeman Today's guest is Mechelle Lewis Freeman, former Olympic sprinter and current relays coach for the United States.Mechelle is a true inspiration having become one of the fastest women in the world at the pinnacle of her professional athletic career. What's even more impressive than how fast she ran is how she reached such heights.Mechelle reminds us all that we have to believe in ourselves and that, no matter what, doing the work everyday is always going to be a requirement if you want to achieve your goals. If you're not consistent, no matter what you believe, you will struggle to realize your full potential. This conversation is going to take you on a journey unlike any other conversation we've had on this podcast thus far. Timestamped Show Notes(4:05) How the pandemic impacts athletes and coaching…(8:44) “Now that person can have hope… You know, not shift too much with a year change. My path still, is in that same direction. It's just that I have to pivot. I think that's what is different in a situation like that. Having that hope that the Olympic games are still for them in this time period. And I think that's what was key.”(11:57) Athletes may have missed opportunities, but they doubled down on their craft…(13:26) The Lewis twins… a fast rise into the sport of track and field…(15:55) A decision to go to grad school, an Eddie Murphy movie, and a promising career…(17:44) The circumstances surrounding a spark to run again…(19:09) “I was stripping a lot of things mentally and like pain and just going through that process of just healing. It's been a whirlwind experience for Jon since his episode on the Clean Sport Co podcast. We discuss how he's feeling a couple days later.Reliving His Experience Today- How the interview he gave with the Clean Sport Collective was not what any of them were probably expecting- How Jon has never truly dealt with the fact that he felt his career was taken from him when he was in his prime- How confused he felt at the time and how all of his priorities shifted, even though he wasn't completely aware of it at the time- What a typical kidney disease diagnosis means for a patient in terms of "time-to-dialysis"- The feedback Jon has been getting from listeners and the connection they are seeing between his story and our mission at Go Be More, and how the work we are doing at Go Be More has enabled him to see and tell his story- How even Jon feels like he is hearing his story for the first time, and yet he feels transported back to that time and can experience it againWhat Jon Laments About His Career- Jon's frustration comes from wanting to prove he was the best and not getting the chance to do it- How the 2006 USA Championships was the moment when everybody knew he was the next great runner, and how it ended tragically with a broken foot- How his kidney disease diagnosis hit him at the wrong time, when he didn't have the stability and support network to overcome it in that moment- Jon's desire to prove that he was one of the greats not because he needed the validation, but because it was real- Why he doesn't beat himself up over his experience, but rather feels a lot of love as a result of it- Why if you have the right intentions and strive to make the best decision you can, even the wrong decision was the right decision- How the loss of one opportunity may have opened the door to his stem cell treatment and another opportunity to make a unique difference in the world of chronic kidney disease and stem cell research- And how Jon stays so grounded despite having such big dreamsIf you liked this episode, you may also like last week's episode on Jon's Kidney Disease Story and our interview with Olympian and Clean Sport Co podcast host Kara Goucher.Recorded August 9, 2020.ReferencesEpisode #61: Jon Rankin, US Junior Champion in the 1500m and Founder of Go Be More Apparel - Clean Sport PodcastWhat is FSGS? - National Kidney FoundationCell Surgical Network - StemCellRevolution.comThe Weight of Gold - HBOHosts:Bryan Green, @sendaibry, Go Be More BlogJon Rankin, @chasejonrankin, Go Be MoreLinks:Get these show notes in your email inbox - Subscribe here!Go Be More websiteGo Be More YouTube ChannelFeedbackSubscribe on your favorite player:Simplecast

“I changed my body for sport. No girl should."Lauren FleshmanWhat is the current state of gender parity in sport? Ask today's guest and she'll tell you that women and girls are no longer content just to have a chance to play; they are demanding that sports be rebuilt altogether.Meet Lauren Fleshman. One of the greatest middle-distance runners in American history, Lauren has a storied history of breaking both records and paradigms. After collecting state championships as a standout high school runner, she matriculated to Stanford, where she garnered 5 NCAA titles, 15 All-American honors, and a spot in the Hall of Fame.As a professional, her accolades include two USA Championships and five World Championship berths for Team USA.Nonetheless, Lauren’s career was also marked with devastating setbacks. She holds the painful distinction of most likely being the best American distance runner never to make an Olympic team, her competitive career repeatedly impaired by injuries that had her on crutches at the wrong four-year intervals. It's the hows and whys behind Lauren's hard knocks that interest me the most. Because it's these very misfortunes that underscore her philosophic perspective on running. Her take on human potential. Her belief in transformation. And, perhaps most poignant, her passion for advancing the power and prominence of women in sport. Now retired from professional competition, Lauren wears many hats. A prolific and talented writer, she is co-author of the Believe Training Journal series and shares her perspectives on her wildly popular Ask Lauren Fleshman blog -- plus a book in the works. As an entrepreneur, Lauren hosts the Wilder Running & Writing Retreats. She's the co-founder of performance nutrition company Picky Bars alongside her professional triathlete husband Jesse Thomas, who graced episode 442 of the podcast. And together they host the Work, Play, Love Podcast. In addition, Lauren serves up coaching duties to the elite women runners of Oiselle’s Littlewing Athletics. And she is the very definition of an active mom of two. Most compelling is Lauren's committed, stalwart advocacy for female equality, empowerment and advancement in sport.Today we cover it all. From the doping scandals swirling around the Nike Oregon Project to revelations about the mental and physical health of female athletes under pressure, we explore how Lauren's successes and failures fuel her as a coach, parent, businessperson and role model. But more than anything, this is about fairness in sport. Advancing the role of women in athletics to forge parity. Creating an equitable financial ecosystem for NCAA and Olympic athletes. And how we can better calibrate the complicated balance between human rights and equity with respect to transgender and intersex athletes.Perhaps most importantly, this is a conversation about the unique pressures and body image issues so many girls and women face in competitive sports. It's about fostering healthier coaching dynamics. More supportive athletic environments -- and ultimately more successful careers. In companionship with our exchange, I urge all of you to read Lauren's moving New York Times OpEd, “I Changed My Body For My Sport. No Girl Should” -- a powerful piece she penned subsequent to our conversation.Picky Bars Offer: As a simple thanks for listening, Lauren wanted to offer all of you a gift. Connor's time earned him a spot in the top 10 and he was the 3rd American finisher. He shared time with us earlier this week discussing his marathon breakthrough, his powerhouse high school and college programs, and lighter topics like his post-race sweet tooth.

Shop My Affirmation: myaffirmationfitwear.com Champions Lose More Than They Win  My true guess is that every girl's anticipation and ambition in this sport is to have as many highs. And if possible, have zero lows. Unfortunately, you're likely to encounter obstacles along the way and therefore that will not always be the case. You certainly will encounter low moments as well as lose sometimes. Having said that, this should not discourage you. You can utilize your failures and obstacles to fuel your highs and wins. Or better still turn them into success. So how do you do that? Let's find out with Adelle Rogers.    Adelle Rogers is a wife and Health and Wellness coordinator for Banner Health. The IFBB Bikini Pro earned her pro card at USA Championships 2017 where she was also named the overall runner up. Her hard work and endurance reflect in her many victories, among them winning the Miss Colorado title. Adelle has been competing since 2016 and she continues to flourish in her career. To fulfill her paramount goal for the sport, she hopes to make it to the Olympia stage in 2020.    In this episode, Adelle dives deep into her many lows in the sport and how those lows contributed to her highs. Additionally, she discusses about how she turned around her quitting thoughts into success. She likewise shares her techniques for staying fairly lean in her offseason and her many strategies for her continual improvement in the sport.   Let's hop in!    Takeaways Nothing worth having comes easy If you want something bad enough, you must be willing to face the challenges and obstacles Keep improving because you can never be perfect Take judges' feedback with a grain of salt  The lows have a purpose; they teach you a lesson of being humble and appreciating the small wins that you get Everybody has their time; your time will come Know what you're comfortable with Manage your time properly Find what works for you and what you feel will help you in your lifestyle Do not let the loses define you  Find something that fuels your side of competing There's a purpose for the lows and a purpose for the highs     Important Questions  [00:07:04] How many years have you been competing?  [00:07:15] When and where did you get your pro card? [00:10:10] What keeps you motivated?  [00:11:44] Why do you compete? [00:39:35] You mentioned that you felt like quitting. How often do you feel that way? [00:46:42] How do you measure your progress and how do you keep yourself sane through it all? [00:52:01] How are you able to still have your full-time job, go to school, and then at the same time, not have competing consume you? [01:01:40] Do you keep cardio in your offseason?  [01:06:18] When you're going into your off-seasons, what are your methods for putting on the muscle mass? [01:11:20] What exactly do you do to help lean out your lower body? [01:20:52] What are your goals moving forward in the sport? [01:29:32] what piece of advice could give to someone wanting to become professional in the sport?   Instagram: @adelle_louann Facebook: Adelle Rogers   Grab your Bikini Diarie's Honorary Tee to support the podcast https://naiymafit.com/shop/ Use code: bikinidiaries for 20%off   FOLLOW ME, Na'iyma Thompson @Naiymafit Naiymafit.com   Join TEAM BOSS BODIES use code: bikinidiaries for 15% off your package

Your success in building muscles depends on your food choices, how much you eat and without a doubt the level of your training. Therefore, it is important to thoughtfully consider the food you choose to eat.    Speaking of muscle building, bulking is quite common in bodybuilding. What is bulking? You ask.    Bulking is where you supply your body with excess calories in order to add weight (muscles and fat). It's important to note there are two types of bulking: clean bulk and dirty bulk. Simply put, clean bulking is when you subject your body to clean sources of carbs and dirty bulking is when you subject your body to any food sources including junk to add calories.    These two types of bulking arguably have their own benefits, but which one is the best for you? Let's find out with Ashley Parker.    Ashley Parker is an IFBB Pro. She has been competing a little over a year, and she recently earned her pro card at 2019 NPC Jr. USA Championships where scooped Bikini Overall Champion title. In addition, Ashley is a Licensed Practical Nurse, but she took a break from that to focus on bodybuilding. She currently works at Arie. Her goal is to compete in the Olympia in 2020.     In today's episode, Ashley talks all about dirty bulking and how to put on muscle fast when you're starting from scratch. She is also going to talk about what it's like to finally claim an IFBB Professional title, the sacrifices she has made that have led her to this point, and what it means to be a pro in this sport.    Dive in and get comfortable.     Takeaways Keep going because you did not come this far just for the sake of it Create a better self and create an image for the judges Always work on yourself; always better yourself  Surround yourself with positive people  Always listen to your body Don’t compete with anybody; compete with yourself  Give it your all every time Trust your coach Be coachable Don't compare yourself; everyone is different Take the feedback from judges and apply it  Give your all and trust the process Keep your mind on the end goal   Important questions  [00:10:28] How long have you been competing?  [00:13:33] What keeps you motivated? [00:17:58] What did your husband think about you being in a bikini on stage? [00:18:26] What were your first impressions of the sport?  [00:21:57] Could you talk to us about the philosophy of bulking and then going into a cutting phase? [00:23:33] If someone was going through the same thing that you were going through putting on weight, how long do you think the process would normally take? [00:24:08] Did you do a dirty bulk?  [00:24:37] For the people who don't know what a dirty bulk is, can you explain what it is? [00:25:17] For how many months did you bulk for? [00:29:24] What would you say was the biggest thing that changed in your life once you started competing? [00:30:58] Did you ever think that you were going to turn pro so fast? [00:32:32] What kind of mindset did you need to have in order to keep yourself going and motivated and driven to achieve the overall title? [00:39:22] How many hours a day do you train in the gym? [00:40:02] How often do you train your glutes? [00:42:21] What exactly were the judges’ critiques after you won the overall? [00:43:54] What exactly are your long term goals?  [00:49:26] Do you feel pressure to use your social media account a little bit more? [00:52:25] Do you feel like it was all worth it to make the changes and sacrifices you have made in your life?  [00:54:54] What would you say were the biggest lessons that you've learned in the sport?  [01:01:17] What advice would you give to someone wanting to become a professional in the sport? If you want to do this, it’s going to be really hard. There’s a misconception that if you want it really bad and you try really hard you’re going to have high levels of success. - Ernie Clark   We’re kicking off season four this week and diving into the coach’s perspective! In past seasons we’ve spoken to the parents, the players themselves, and the experts, and we are excited now to dive into the perspectives of some incredible coaches! Coach Ernie Clark was a high school coach for 14 years, a club coach for six, and now coaches at the collegiate level. He started out as a high school athlete struggling with performance, and through guidance from his coaches became a state qualifier and earned a collegiate scholarship for Track and Field. He became a national qualifier in the 400 hurdles at the University of Indianapolis. He went on to teach and coach high school athletes, breaking school records and growing multiple programs in Indiana. His athletes became 6th in the state during his most successful season, during which he realized his drive as a coach was to help athletes reach beyond what he could do as an athlete himself; competing on a higher national level, such as the USA Championships, and even the Olympics trials or Olympic Games. He became a coach at Ashland University, working alongside four-time Olympian Judd Logan, and currently coaches five national champions - including Myles Pringle. Coach Clark has been named a Regional Track and Field Assistant Coach of the Year two years in a row and was recently named Assistant National Coach of the Year. He and Kathy discuss his development from out-working to out-motivating, the massive mentality shifts he’s learned, and how his own struggles as an athlete and becoming addicted to doing a great job became the biggest factors in his growth as a coach. Ernie is not only a coach, but a sports parent himself, with two kids aged 14 and 17. If you enjoyed this episode please share and like Parenting Peak Performers whenever you listen in!

Meet Nick Symmonds. He is truly a man on the move. Nick is a 2-time Olympian, has medaled at 13 USA Championships (including 9 Golds). Along the way he learned to love running (believe it or not, he did NOT love running when he started). He became a staunch advocate for athletes' right. He started Run Gum - an incredible, innovative company that solves a problem many athletes face. He wrote a book "Life Outside the Oval Office." He is also after the State High Points & 7 Summits which you can read about on his site (this is all in his "down time.") He travels, does public speaking, and generally lifts and inspires people everywhere he goes. You definitely need to check out his Youtube channel for both fun and thought-provoking episodes. All in all, Nick has definitely a been-there / done-that kinda guy. Many people would stop-there! But not Nick. He recently announced his retirement from track & field racing, but it wasn't just a retirement that he announced. In the same breath, he declared his next goal - the Honolulu Marathon in December. A goal that both scares and excites him. I feel so lucky to chat with Nick about his past, present and future. We dug into what makes Nick tick and I know you will appreciate his openness, honesty and vulnerability.
