VA News and Veteran Suicide Prevention
The head of a national veterans group is on tour in Minnesota this week to talk about preventing suicide. Suicide rates are consistently higher for those who have served in the military, compared to non-veterans according to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The American Legion's Be the One campaign aims to get veterans and their communities talking more openly about mental health. James LaCoursiere Jr., the group's National Commander, is promoting the initiative all over the country. He joined MPR News host Nina Moini to talk about the initiative. If you or someone you know is struggling, you are not alone. Call or text 988 to get connected with trained counselors who can help. Send us a textHenry Angulo returns to share how The Firewatch is creating a measurable impact on veteran suicide rates across Florida through their community-based approach. As Regional Programs Director for South Florida, Henry reveals the powerful statistics behind their work – including a consistent 27% decrease in veteran suicide in Northeast Florida since their program began. The conversation takes a powerful turn when Scott shares a personal story of using his Firewatch training to help a veteran in crisis, highlighting the effectiveness of their "Veterans Safe Place Program." This free 45-60 minute training provides participants with a wallet card containing critical resources and a step-by-step process for handling crisis situations – a simple tool that literally saves lives.Henry explains how The Firewatch is expanding across Florida through county grants and their Ambassador program, which allows passionate volunteers to become certified trainers. We learn how states like California and Alaska have expressed interest in implementing similar programs, showing the potential for this Florida success story to develop into a national movement. What makes The Firewatch's approach unique is their focus on creating "connectors" throughout communities – regular people equipped to recognize warning signs and guide those in crisis toward professional help. Their model acknowledges that suicide affects everyone, with approximately 135 people impacted by each suicide, making prevention truly a community-wide responsibility.Ready to make a difference? Visit thefirewatchorg.org to request training for your organization, become an Ambassador, or support this vital mission through donations that help keep these life-saving resources free and accessible to all.
The Hard Truth About Veterans, PTSD & Addiction (No One Talks About This)
2025 is off to an absolutely nightmarish start as the boys huddle around the microphones and try to process not only the ongoing historical LA wildfires that have destroyed over 12,000 structures and killed at least 24 people, but also the horrific content they had originally planned: The domestic terrorist attacks that were committed on New Years Day in New Orleans and Las Vegas. If that somehow wasn't enough, they'll also be discussing the recent fatal police shooting of the infamous “pizzagate” gunman. We cover it all in our first main episode of 2025: domestic terrorism, ecological disaster, and even war crimes. Grim! On a cross state motorcycle trip, I stopped by G9 Defense, an innovative ammunition company, to do some ballistic testing with Casey Foster and Kyle Holmes. All the folks I've met from G9 have led fascinating lives, and my guests today are no exception. Before bullets, Casey spent years farming South Pacific Islands such as Fiji, Tahiti, and Samoa, and was at one point the world's largest supplier of Noni Juice. Kyle has a master's in forensic psychology and spent his previous life working with minors and adults in suicide prevention. I've been out of the military for 9 years, and at this point, I've lost more troops to suicide than I did from combat. This is such an important episode. Kyle shares why veterans are killing themselves, what those in crisis can do, and how we can save lives and support ourselves and the people we love. Check out G9 Defense WebsiteInstagram

Swammie was a Marine veteran who did three tours to Iraq earning a Purple Heart and a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal. Though there is nothing we can do to change what happened that day. We can make a difference. By raising awareness and funds for programs committed to taking action, the Swammie Shuffle will begin to redeem that day. Veterans experiencing homelessness face unique challenges that increase their risk for suicide. In this episode, Dr. Edgar Villarreal talks to our guest Dr. Ryan Holliday about the need for research focused on this population. They discuss an article that explores research priorities identified by experts and Veterans with lived experience in suicide prevention and homelessness who came together in a recent VA meeting. Today's conversation covers reaching Veterans with the services they have access to, upstream interventions and the need for tailored approaches for subgroups such as women and men or rural and urban. Targeted research will help broaden suicide prevention efforts beyond mental health interventions to support those experiencing or at risk for homelessness. Literally a Real Life "Jason Bourne" It was an honour to speak to a true gentleman Erick Miyares. A man who has always worked in the shadows in the service of others and now continues to do so with the “Military Special Operations Collaborative” in helping prevent and stop Veteran Suicide. If 1 thing we can do can help1 person, then we are doing something right!! Erick talks about the first time he got shot in battle and the real impact it had on him both psychologically and physically. After 20 years in Special Operations, and so many of these in combat - and it took it's toll. Selflessly putting his body and Mental Health second to the mission - he realised that he needed to pay it forward after losing 2 of his “active duty” friends to suicide in one month. This is a must watch/listen for anyone who is a partner of or actually a military or other high risk person, and needs to understand and learn from veterans who have been in those dark places. We know how to fix a lot of things with our training and experience, but we cannot bring back someone who has taken their lives. “TBI's PTS, Depression, Alcohol, Risky Behaviour that all leads to the tip- which is that suicide” so he has decided to stop veteran suicide and take action himself. Suicide prevention is a worthy goal itself, but it's about more than stopping just one suicidal event – it's also important to address the emotional pain underlying suicide and build a meaningful life that's truly worth living. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, known as ACT, is a therapy approach that helps people experience their emotions in a new way, take perspective on their thoughts and build a more meaningful life. Is ACT a useful approach for addressing suicide? In this episode, Dr. Sean Barnes, clinical research psychologist at the VA Rocky Mountain MIRECC for Suicide Prevention, talks with guest host Dr. Debbie Sorensen about his research on ACT for Life, a new treatment designed to help Veterans respond effectively to suicidal thoughts and actions using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. In this episode, Barnes and Sorensen discuss: What ACT is, and why its approach to suicide is unique Sean's intervention, ACT for Life, and how he and his colleagues are targeting suicidal behavior from a contextual behavioral approach Current research on ACT Responding to suicide-related thoughts using ACT The importance of values in building a life worth living Article: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Promote Recovery from suicidal crises: A Randomized Controlled Acceptability and Feasibility Trial of ACT for life Resources: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline/ Veterans Crisis Line: 1-800-273-8255 Veterans and Military Press 1 Suicide Risk Management Lecture Series About Sean Barnes: Sean M. Psychologists Off The Clock: A Psychology Podcast About The Science And Practice Of Living Well
Mental health clinicians want to alleviate human suffering and do what we can to help prevent suicide. And yet, like many stigmatized topics, suicide is often avoided in conversations - including clinical conversations. Basic behavioral science tells us that we humans tend to avoid painful stimuli, and thanks to the double-edged sword of verbal behavior, painful stimuli (like conversations about suicide and suffering) can be both physical and psychological. Suicide stigmatization, as well as uncomfortable thoughts and feelings, can keep even the most experienced clinicians and providers from effectively helping their clients who are experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. In this episode of Psychologists Off the Clock, Debbie and Sean Barnes, clinical research psychologist and principal investigator of the ACT for Life study, discuss suicidal behavior, ways suicide is challenging for clinicians, and how to effectively engage with clients who have thoughts and feelings related to suicide. As clinicians, we often have limited behavioral repertoires around suicidality in our clients. We often tend to focus on helping clients ‘not die.' However, there is more to life than ‘not dying,' and suicide prevention is only the first, albeit vital, step in recovery. Join us in this episode to learn how to help your client build a life worth living! Workshop for Therapists: Join Sean, Debbie, and their colleagues for ACT for Life: Experiential training on a Contextual Behavioral Approach to Suicidal Ideation and Behavior at the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science's virtual pre-conference workshop, June 12-13, 2021. Listen and Learn: Why it's important to talk more openly about suicideThe plethora of resources available for suicide prevention, postvention, and safety planningSome of the challenges for therapists in managing suicide risk and working effectively with suicide (and some insight as to why it can be so challenging)Sean and Debbie's expert, experienced-backed opinions about talking to clients about suicidal behaviors, risk, and safety planning. An Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) conceptualization of suicide and why this approach to conceptualizing suicide is unique compared to more traditional approachesThe function of suicidal behavior and why it's important to explore function as a clinicianAbout Sean's intervention, ACT for Life, and how he is targeting suicidal behavior from a contextual behavioral approachWhat creative hopelessness is, how to use it, and why it can often feel scary for cliniciansHow to implement mindfulness and acceptance into your clinical work with suicidal clientsWhat it means to expand someone's behavioral repertoire in the presence of suicidal thoughts and feelings About Sean Barnes: Sean M. Today's episode has as a special guest Brian Flannery, who represents Reboot Recovery. This program began as a grassroots effort to address issues that many veterans are going through and has grown to an international footing. The topic of how veterans are viewed in society will also be addressed.
